Newtown 17 Colwyn Bay 13
Colwyn Bay made the journey their furthest league on Saturday,
away to Newtown. It was a very close game from start to finish, but it was
Newtown who took the advantage, punishing Bay with 3 early penalties. Newtown's
tactics appeared to be to disrupt the game as much as possible. At almost every
breakdown their trainer was required to join the field to treat injuries. When
Bay finally had time to play, they scored with a trademark driving maul try, of
course once again scored by Dave Brown, whose captaincy this season appears to
have inspired his on field performance. Half time arrived with a score line of
09-05 to the home side. In the second half as the light faded, the referee
finally reacted to Newtown's tactic of constant injuries, by allowing play to
continue with their trainer of the pitch. A further driving maul by Bay gained
great position on Newtown's 5 metre line, and a quick ball saw Mark Earl crash
over on the wing to score a well taken try. With Newtown now chasing the game,
they secured a lineout on the Bay 22. The resulting possession saw the ball move
along to their winger who beat 2 players to score in the corner. At 14-13 the
game became tense, and both teams had a player sin-binned. However the final say
went to Newtown, who added a penalty to secure a 17-13 victory.
