COLWYN BAY RFC v NEWTOWN 20/1/07 BAY RETURN TO FORM The Bay secured a deserved 20-10 home victory against an uncompromising Newtown side in difficult wet and blustery conditions. The Bay secured the majority of the possession in the first half but play was scrappy with passes on both sides going astray in the windy conditions. Both sides found it difficult to make inroads with defences in control until good support and inter-passing was finished by fine back Sean McDonagh for a well taken try near the corner to give the Bay a 5-0 interval lead. The game came to life in the second half. An exchange of penalties early in the half by Bay’s scrum half Andy Williams-Owen and Newtown’s centre John Peeters took the score to 8-3. Honours were fairly even for a period until the best move of the game saw Bay prop Chris Browne burst down the centre of the field and good support work by Aled Zachary resulted in Will Blackwell crossing for his second try in the corner to take the score to 15-3. Shortly afterwards a Newtown 22 metre drop out was fielded by wing Johnny Davies who forced his way through the Newtown defence for a fine opportunist try in the corner to give the Bay a seemingly unassailable 20-3 lead. However, Newtown came straight back on the attack putting the Bay defence under sustained pressure and, towards the end of the game, they were rewarded with a well taken try and conversion by John Peeters for a final 20-10 score-line.
