COLWYN BAY WIN CLOSE ENCOUNTER AT NEWTOWN Newtown are always a tough proposition at home and this game was no exception. Newtown dominated possession in the early stages of the game but the resolute Bay defence kept them out. However, after 25 minutes Newtown stole a line-out on the Bay line and a swift movement across the pitch resulted in a well taken try by their prominent number eight Eddy Maguire to put Newtown 5-0 ahead. Bay pressure towards the end of the half, with scrum half Josh Leach making sniping runs, was well defended by Newtown. 10 minutes into the second half a Newtown handling move across the width of the pitch resulted in a try wide out by prop Gavin Randall converted by Rowan Meek to take the score to 12-0. The Bay started to win more quality possession and strong running by their centres started to gain ground and clever tactical kicking by outside half Andy Williams-Owen put Newtown under increasing pressure. After 20 minutes a dropped pass by the Newtown backs was kicked through by Josh Leach and centre Dave Hocknell picked up to score an opportunist try. Co-centre Adam Hughes converted to pull the Bay back to 12-7. After 25 minutes a relieving kick was well taken by Bay full-back Sean McDonagh and his jinking run down the left hand touchline resulted in a fine individual try wide out to put the sides level at 12-12. By this time the Bay were dominating possession and, 5 minutes before time, number eight Mark Earl fed Josh Leach from the base of a scrum and his half break resulted in left wing Duncan Watts forcing his way over for a match winning try near the touch line to take the final score to 12-17. The Bay are away to Rhydyfelin this Saturday in the second round of the Konica Minolta Cup. |
