Saturday 14th January '12
Colwyn Bay 0 Dolgellau 23

Colwyn Bay's topsy turvey season continued as they went down at the hands of Dolgellau leaders of Division 2 (North) and almost certainly put paid to any hopes that third placed Club had of a top two finish with a comfortable away win.

The Bay started the season with a good home record winning all four games at home of their opening seven games while struggling to win away from home losing all three, but in the next seven games they have failed to win at home but managed three wins on the road and this form continued last Saturday.

Visiting Full back Tom Roberts kicked a brace of first half goals before adding a try, two conversions and a penalty in the second period to seal the points with replacement wing Tristan Evans completed the scoring with a late try for the visitors.

Saturday 10th December
Colwyn Bay 38 Llangollen 17

Llangollen proved a stern test for Colwyn Bay in the third round of the SWALEC Bowl as the visitors lead for most of the opening half.

Centre Richard Jasper kicked an early penalty for the visitors before wing Dan Parry ran in the opening try for the home side. Not deterred Llangollen regained the lead with two further penalties from outside half Jasper. The Bay took the lead shortly before the interval with a try from out side half Tom Williams which he converted before running in a second try early in the second period. The Bay then took control as the ran in further tries through the second row pair of skipper Bryn Williams and Chris Hughes (2) the conversions being shared between No 8 Ben Evans (2) and one for scrum half Ian Marshall, The visitors had the final say with a last minute try from flanker Dan Roberts.

Saturday 26th November
COLWYN BAY 7  RHYL 31

Rhyl bounced back to winning form after their surprising loss to Denbigh last week, with their visit to Brookfield Drive last Saturday in the latest round of their Division 2 North Swalec League campaign with a convincing 5 tries (3 converted) to one (converted) victory against the Seahorses.

The Bay 1st XV  bossed the early exchanges but a missed penalty from close in front of the posts after eight minutes saw the visitors begin to assert themselves.  After 21 minutes wing Gareth Jones opened their scoring.  Full back Rhodri Carlton-Jones converted.

With astute kicking for territory from Rhyl fly half Jason Blackmore, Rhyl added to their tally on the half hour through wing Jack Hughes out wide to leave Rhyl 12-0 up at half time.

The second half opened with much of the same with Rhyl scrum-half James Farrell darting through from the base of the loose to score.  Carlton-Jones converted and after 60 minutes crossed the line himself converting both efforts.  Farrrell scored again with ten minutes to go but after both sides saw yellow for brawling, the Bay upped their game as Rhyl began to cruise as flanker Chris Hughes battled through to score with scrum half Ian Marshall converting.

A break now for the Wales V Australia international next week until 10 December.  The Seahorses entertain Llangollen from the League below in the third round of the Swalec Bowl at home on that day – their only real chance of silverware now this year.

Saturday 19th November
Newtown 15 Colwyn Bay 27

Colwyn Bay secured their second away win of the season and in so doing completed a league double over Newtown who are now in danger of relegation with only eight points, five ahead of bottom club Wrexham the only side they have beaten this season.

The visitors started strongly opening up a seventeen point lead without reply and turned round 27-10 up at the interval with outside half Tom Williams in fine form as he ran in two tries and kicked two penalties and three conversions, the visitors scoring being completed with a try from No 8 Ben Evans.

For the home side centre Tom Bucknell and wing Junior Dean crossed for tries with outside half Joe Murray adding a conversion and penalty

12th November 2011
Colwyn Bay 11 COBRA 13

Colwyn Bay squandered opportunities with poor handling and failing to kick goals when given the chance as they lost ground on the leading clubs in division two (North) as the home side had the best of both territory and possession in a game that they should have won with ease.

It was a last minute try from No 8 Dorian Lloyd converted by outside half Llew Williams which gave second placed Cobra the lead for the first time in the match and with it the points as Colwyn Bay failed to take their chances to make the game safe.

The Bay took an early lead with a long range penalty by centre Adam Hughes which was the only score of the first half. The home side doubled their lead in the opening minutes of the second period with a penalty from outside half Tom Williams before scrum half Ian Marshall increased the lead as he charged down a clearance kick by Cobra and touched down for outside half Williams to convert. The visitors soon pulled three points back to stay in touch with a penalty from outside half Llew Williams.

In the dying minutes the home side had opportunities to go for goal but opted to run the ball allowing Cobra to staying within reach which proved decisive as they moved up field and scored in the last move of the game

29th October 2011
Llanidloes 16 Colwyn Bay 5

Colwyn Bay unbeaten at home but their away form continues to disappoint in league 2 (North) as they slumped to defeat at Llanidloes despite taking an early lead with a try from second row Mark Bratt.

The home side drew level with a try from flanker Dick Jones which was converted by outside half Dan Short to take the lead and it was the outside half who scored all the remaining points with a brace of penalty goals and a drop goal.

22nd October 2011
Abergele 14  Colwyn Bay  28
Colwyn Bay took the honours in the first ever league clash between the two neighbouring towns but had to come from behind as the home side opened up an early 6-0 lead with a brace of penalties from centre Gareth Evans. Tries from outside half Tom Williams, flanker Mike McDonagh and scrum half Ian Marshall all converted by outside half Williams gave the Bay a 21-6 lead at the break.

Full back Chris Morris crossed for the home side midway into the second period to give the home side some hope before prop Dan Lycett charged over from a lineout for outside half Williams to convert to seal the game and a try bonus point for the visitors.

15th October 2011
Colwyn Bay 62       Machynlleth   7

The Seahorses put in a polished performance against an inexperienced Mach side at Brookfield Drive last Saturday running in 10 tries to put themselves into third place in Swalec League Division 2 North.

On a glorious autumn day, the Bay imperiously cruised to a 31 points to nil lead at half-time with five tries from No 8 Ben Evans, left wing Mattie Jones, right wing Martin Cormack, outside centre Karl Wright and Lock and Skipper Bryn Williams.  Fly half Tom Williams added 3 conversions.

5 more tries  in the second half, a second from Wright, two from always busy scrum-half Ian Marshall, another from fly half Tom Williams and yet another from Phil Roberts who showed strongly throughout at flanker, saw the Bay finish in a torrent of 17 points in the last five minutes after Mach had stung them back into action after a seventy-first minute try from wing Jordan Booth converted by the consistently impressive visiting fly-half Steffan Price.

1st October 2011
Dolgellau 30 Colwyn Bay 22
Dolgellau sealed victory in the opening quarter with three swift tries starting in the second minute when No 8 Dewi Roberts went over near the posts for the opening try. Wing Dion Jones and flanker Dafydd Llewelyn added further touch downs two of which were converted by full back Tom Roiberts who also kicked a brace of penalties to lead by twenty five to nil before prop Mark Edwards reduced the arrears for the visitors with a try on the stroke of half time.

Despite playing all the second half and 20 minutes of the opening period with only fourten men after second row Chris Hughes received a second yellow card, it was the visitors who had the better of the last forty minutes as they managed three second half tries through wing Matty Jones scrum half Ian Marshall and skipper Bryn Jones to claim a try bonus point one of which was converted by outside half Tom Williams before wing Dion Jones went over for his second try of the game to make the result safe for the home side

Saturday 24th September 2011

COLWYN BAY 73 WREXHAM 0

On a cloudy but dry day at Brookfield Drive, Colwyn Bay trounced a weak Wrexham side to post their third victory out of four in this year’s Division 2 North Swalec National Leagues Tournament.

With a gentle south westerly in their faces the Bay newcomer outside centre Carl Wright opened the scoring after six minutes with a try under the posts which Tom Williams slotted to slate the first of his nine conversions.

Tries kept on coming regularly through the first half at the end of which the Bay were 38 – 0 up against their disorganised opponents.  Further tries from full-back Gareth Williams, two from inside centre Alex Fowler and two from second row Chris Hughes who was showing a welcome return to form after missing most of last season with a shoulder injury.

It was more of the same in the second half with the Bay more or less doubling their score with wing Martin Cormack going over for a hat trick with further tries from number 8 Ben Evans and flighty winger Matt Jones.

An emphatic win therefore for the Seahorses.  More difficult tasks lie ahead with a trip to Dolgellau next Saturday when a much more difficult encounter will be anticipated by all the players.
