COLWYN BAY RFC v NANT CONWY RFC - 3 FEB 2007 BAY RECORD DOUBLE OVER NANT CONWY The Bay recorded a rare double over a strong Nant Conwy side this season with a deserved 15-5 home victory in a close and entertaining game. Nant Conwy started the game with a bang and slick passing along the backs resulted in right winger Iwan ap Hywyl scoring an unconverted try in the corner for a 5-0 lead within the first minute. Nant continued to have the better of the game for the first quarter but solid defence and relieving kicks by Bay full back Patrick Leach and outside half Matt Anwyl kept them out. As the half progressed the Bay started to come more into the game with prop Chris Browne prominent in some good drives from the pack. Ten minutes before half time a move along the Bay backs found Patrick Leach in space on the Nant 10 metre line and he outflanked the Nant defence at pace for a fine solo try to level the scores 5-5. Nant fought back with some enterprising back play but were kept out until half time by a resolute Bay defence. From the restart the Bay went straight on the attack and spent a long period in the Nant half but they were kept out by solid tackling until the pressure told when they were awarded a penalty for offside. Outside half Andy Williams-Owen converted the kick to put the Bay 8-5 in front. Nant came straight back on the attack but the Bay defended solidly and Sean McDonagh was prominent with piercing runs out of defence. With about 10 minutes to go Matt Anwyl received a pass on the Nant 22 metre line and his chip over the defence was gathered by Patrick Leach. He was held just short of the line but offloaded for Bay flanker Dave Brown to cross for a try. The conversion by Andy Williams-Owen gave the Bay a deserved 15-5 win at full time.
