COLWYN BAY 10 CAERNARFON 21 A disappointing start to the league season saw Bay lose the opening fixture in a fairly even contest at Caernarfon. The home side took an early lead when a Bay offside after 2 minutes was duly punished by three points. After this Bay playing down the slope gained the upper hand but were unable to convert pressure into points despite getting within a metre of the try line on several occasions and then against the run of play Caernarfon scored an unconverted try to lead 8-0 which lead was further increased when Bay gave away yet another penalty to go 11-0 down at the break. After half-time Caernarfon seized the initiative using the slope to good advantage but good Bay defending kept their line intact and they were then able to break clear and were rewarded with a penalty after a Caernarfon infringement. This spurred Bay on and a good attacking phase of play saw strong running centre Dave Hocknell force his way over near the posts despite the attentions of several opponents with the conversion coming from Adam Hughes to put them within a point of the home side at 10-11. From the restart Bay relaxed and Caernarfon immediately hit back with a converted try to improve their lead 10-18 going into the final quarter. With neither side really gaining the upper hand a further penalty by Caernarfon enabled them to emerge victors 10-21. A game that could have been won but too many basic unforced errors were made. |
