COLWYN BAY RFC V DENBIGH RFC DENBIGH WIN CLOSE ENCOUNTER Denbigh were victorious 6-15 away at Colwyn Bay for the first time in many years with a performance that belied their lowly position in the Division 4 North table. The Bay dominated possession from the kick off and a 50 metre break by full back Sean McDonagh took them to the Denbigh 22. A high tackle on Bay scrum half Andy Williams-Owen, resulted in a well taken penalty by wing Tom Duffy to put the Bay 3-0 ahead after 5 minutes. The Bay pack continued to exert pressure in the loose and were rewarded with another successful Tom Duffy penalty 5 minutes later to extend the Bay’s lead to 6-0. Denbigh hit back with a series of attacking moves which were well defended by the Bay. The pressure eventually told and good handling by the Denbigh backs was rewarded with a well taken try by full back Jamie Winning, converted by centre Tony Jones to give Denbigh a 6-7 lead after 20 minutes. A series of attacking moves by Denbigh was well defended by the Bay with no further scores up to half time. The Bay started the second half purposely and strong running and sustained pressure by their backs was met with a solid Denbigh defence. One of the few Denbigh forays into the Bay half resulted in a Denbigh penalty for killing the ball. Tony Jones’ conversion put Denbigh 6-10 in the lead. The Bay fought back and the pack were camped on the Denbigh line for 10 minutes or more but were denied a score by the solid Denbigh defence. A long relieving Denbigh kick was followed by a breakaway try by the Denbigh second row David Haydock to give Denbigh a deserved 6-15 victory. |
