SCOTTISH POWER NORTH WALES CUP FINAL COLWYN BAY RFC v MOLD RFC – 7 MAY 2007 MOLD WIN CUP FOR SECOND TIME In front of a bumper holiday crowd Mold attacked the Bay line from the kick off but strong driving mauls from the Bay pack took play into the Mold half and hands in a ruck resulted in full back Ashley James converting penalty to give the Bay an early 3 point lead. The Bay started to gain the ascendancy and a spear tackle on Bay number 8 allowed Ashley James to convert a further penalty to put the Bay 6-0 in front. The Bay half backs of Barry Cravetto and Patrick Leach combined well to gain ground and create a move on the Bay line. A chip forward by centre Jody Pryor created a scoring opportunity which Bay wing forward just failed to gather over the line for a try. A further enterprising move by the Bay backs created a difficult scoring pass which wing Johnny Davies just failed to gather for what would have been a certain try. Shortly afterwards the Bay were penalised for crossing and a penalty from centre Gavin Roberts took the score to 6-3 at half time. The Bay had the better of the first period but failed to convert their scoring opportunities into tries. Mold started the second half with a purpose and soon created a threatening position on the Bay line. A move along their three quarter line and a clever inside pass created a try under the posts by winger Richard Jones. The conversion by Gavin Roberts gave Mold a 6-10 lead shortly into the second half. Mold started to dominate possession, which was used to good effect by their scrum half John Griffiths. An attacking position near the Bay line was capitalised on by the pack to drive prop John Skipley over for a try converted by Gavin Roberts to extend Mold’s lead to 6-17. Slick play by the Mold backs resulted in two further tries by outside half Scott Henshaw and winger Mike Rogers. A further conversion by Gavin Roberts gave Mold victory with a final score of 6-29. Had the Bay taken full advantage of their earlier opportunities the score may well have been closer at the end. But Mold’s domination in the second half meant that they fully deserved their victory.
