Thank you to the U18 Mermaids who took part in the various
Christmas fundraisers, especially Abi, Loz, Anna and Kumari who put in
maximum effort and rattled tins for the Round Table Santa float and also

I
have just been informed that the U13s are unable to provide bodies
for 0900 – 1200 on Tuesday for Bag Packing in Asda to help raise
funds for the club! Can anyone please help, even if only for an hour
or two so that we don’t let ASDA down . They have been good to us in
giving us this opportunity and not fulfilling it may jeopardise our
favoured status with them in the future. We need at least 12 bodies
Please call / email me with offers ASAP and we’ll try and rescue
this situation

Interesting Pullover
Contest - Winners
Many thanks to all competitors for making this event
a huge success. It brought out the artistic inner person in many,
especially the three prize winners, Chubs, Elwyn and Lemon. There
were 12 competitors which raised £60.00 in entrance fees. A further
£40.00 was donated to the contest by non competitors, to who we are
most grateful. It was agreed that 50% of the entrance fees plus
other donations was to go to the Alder Hay Children's Hospital and
50% divided between the three best Interesting Pullovers. The three
prize winners generously returned their winnings to go into the
Alder Hay Fund. This provided us with a total of £100.00. That's not
bad for a bit of after match fun on a Saturday evening. Thanks Mark,
Elwyn and Dave for your kind gesture. Finally, thanks to Llanidloes
first XV captain and his team mates for judging the event. As we
say, without a referee we can't have a contest, your selection of
prize winners was endorsed by all. We will have to think of
something equally as silly for next year. Best wishes to you all for
Christmas and the New Year. There, that's saved me a fortune in
cards and stamps!

Interesting
Pullover Contest
The contest will take place this
Saturday, 6 December 2008. We have 15 contestants so far, and are
looking for at least a further 5. The list is in the club house, on
the wall, by the kitchen entrance. The contest rules are in a box
below the list. It is envisages that the judging will take place
about 5.00 pm - 5.30 pm. All contestants are therefore asked to be
wearing their "Interesting Pullovers" by 5.00 pm at the latest. (The
earlier you start wearing them the better, it will give the judges
more time to examine form before making their official selection) If
you have not already done so, get your name on the list and join in
the fun.

So far we have 8 names on the list for
the above contest. This is not good enough!!! We need at least 12
contestants to make it a really successful evening. If all those who
have been sports enough to put their names on the list, can
encourage at least one more person to become involved, we will have
16 contestants.
Come on!! Support this bit of fun!!
You will be helping a good cause - and you may end up winning some
extra cash to spend over the holiday.
Thanks to the "great eight" who have
already stood up to the challenge. The rest of you, get your names

I'm very sorry to see that Ian Morris is no longer Refereeing in

respected, As he mentioned he still trained with senior sides when
he could make it, And was always willing to explain rules and give
guidance to the players. So as a player and clubman I'd like to take
this opportunity to thank Ian, And wish him all the best for the

CBRFC Annual Golf
Day 2008
A belated thank you to all who turned
up on what was probably the worst weather throughout a very bad
summer. There were 16 players in total making up four, four ball
matches. Congratulations to Arwel Edwards on winning the competition
with a very respectable 32 points. (I think it had something to do
with his expensive waterproof clothing!!). Considering the
conditions, any score that day was very good including John Stobbs'
5. At least you stayed the course John, not like some, who's names I
won't mention.
Terry has booked the course for 12
September 2009 for next year's competition. However, as it is
desirable to have the competition when the 1st XV are playing at
home, I have asked the golf professional at Rhos if we can have some
flexibility over this date. He has agreed the following: CBRFC
receives the fixtures for 2009/10 season early July 2009, If CBRFC
1st is playing at home on either 5 or 19 September 2009, so long as
the course is not booked for either of these dates, he is willing to
change the date from the 12 Sep 09. If we are playing at home on the
12 Sep 09, all well and good.
I know this is a long way off, but
better to get dates into diaries sooner rather than later. For the
time being it is 12 Sep 09. I hope it will not cause too much
inconvenience if this is changed later.

Interesting Pullover Competition
A further reminder about the
Interesting Pullover Competition. We said that this would take place
at the home fixture nearest to Christmas. According to the fixture
list, this will be Llanidloes on 6 December 08. Not quite as near as
to Christmas as we would like, but we may as well get the
celebrations going early. The format of the competition will be as
follows: It will cost £5.00 to enter; each person entering the
competition will be given a number; all competitors will parade on
the stage at the club wearing their pullover and displaying their
number; (a bit like the Miss World contest). Our visitors,
Llanidloes, will be the competition judges. The prize money will be
the total of all entry fees. It will be divided thus; 50% to CBRFC
current charity; 25% to the winner, 15% to second place and 10% to
third place.
We can make this a great fun event.
The more who enter the competition, the more money we will raise for
charity and the bigger the pot will be for the three successful
placings. So, dig out those old pullovers. I'll bet some of your
parents and grandparents have some really interesting pullovers
stashed away. If you can't find one, get knitting!!!

'As you are no doubt aware
I have moved to Shropshire and as a result have been unavailable to
referee.
I have decided that I will
not be available to officiate in Wales for the remainder of the season.
This decision is based on a number of factors such as the family move
and associated issues and also some degree of disillusionment with the
North Wales Society. Following (in my opinion) a personal verbal attack
by a high ranking society member, other officials decided to support his
side of the argument having initially given me their unequivocal
support. This has left me with a really bitter taste in the mouth and
although they may deny it I have subsequently not been graced with the
usual level of prime fixtures organised by that society. Also as an
aspiring referee (still) surely one would have been expected to receive
some referee coaching; sadly last season I was not seen on a single
occasion by the coaching team. However I was given some excellent
feedback from other assessors around Wales and especially Alan Davies.
Therefore I have decided to hang up my whistle in Wales for this season
and review how I feel next calendar year.
I would also like to thank
the players, coaching staff and officials at Colwyn Bay RFC who have
kindly allowed me to stay fit and occasionally join their Saturday match
activities. You are a great club and will surely one day obtain the
silverware that you deserve. I have received nothing but support from
the club and if anyone asks me to recommend a club in North Wales I will
always point them in your direction' |

wish to take part in the annual golf day on Saturday 6 September 2008.
Firstly let me thank those who have sent in their entry forms and paid
their fees. Also a further thanks to those who have contributed towards
the cost of prizes. I know there will be a number of you who will turn
up on the day and pay the entry fee then. However, it does make life
easier for everybody if you get your entry forms in before the day of
the competition. We can then inform the golf club how many will be
attending. This helps them to prepare the bacon rolls, tea and coffee
accordingly. It also helps to let the rugby club steward know how many
are attending, so as she can prepare sufficient food for the lunch time
buffet. So, if you are entering this year's competition please hand your

It was good to see the
AGM well supported and refreshing to have so many playing members in
attendance. Better still, seeing younger members volunteering their
services on the club committee shows an enthusiasm for the club's
future. This enthusiasm has no doubt come as a result of excellent team
performances, at all levels, over the past few seasons and club
facilities that are envied throughout all of Wales. After serving the
committee, in various posts, over a 20-year period, I am pleased to see
that the younger generation is taking an active interest in the
management of the club. We old arses eventually need to be put out to
grass, and allow you "young guns" to take the helm. However, be guided
by the old hands in your early days as committee members; there is still
some life in the old dogs. Remember, any constructive suggestions you
believe will benefit the club will be fully discussed at committee and,
if financially and practically viable, will happen. The proof of this is
self evident in the innovative way in which the club has been managed to
date, by providing the excellent facilities we all now enjoy. Finally;
some wise words to reflect upon "We must keep our minds subtle and
active, and never let ourselves be hypnotised by traditions, we must
criticize ourselves, and criticize our criticisms; we must experiment
and explore" (Major General J F C Fuller 1925). Best of luck for 2008/09

Business as usual for the squad. A great season can now be defined
with a tenacious performance next Bank Holiday Monday at Mold RFC.
All of the hard work on and off the field by the players, coaching
staff and the army of committee members and 'Bay Faithful' has
firmly put this club on the rugby map.
I know that every player will give 100% intensity of effort and not
one will leave the pitch having not given their absolute best
performance.
Enter this final knowing that you fully deserve to be there. Enter
this final safe in the knowldege that you have the talent, game
structure and will to win. Enter this final and battle for every
scrap of ball, make every tackle count, make yourselves proud with a
performance that defines your season.
I am immensely proud of all that has been achieved this season and I
can honestly say that Colwyn Bay Rugby Club is one of the most
progressive, attentive and player focused clubs I have ever coached
for. My very best wishes for the final boys, go out there and
unleash every last drop of effort you have.

Well done to the U17 Mermaids for your outstanding
performances today in your last games as the U17 Mermaids. Thank
goodness the WRU has decided to change the age grading so you can all
continue next year as the U18 Mermaids - this also means that you will
ALWAYS be North Wales U17 Champions for all time (2nd year running).
Congratulations - we are proud of you all.
Ann & Louis.

You may have heard the rumours, after
some careful thought, I have decided to retire from all refereeing after
my completing outstanding appointments including being TJ at North Wales
Cup Final. There are so many to thank individually, so I would
personally like to thank all at Colwyn Bay Rugby Club, for there
hospitality and friendship over the past 17 years. It has always been a
pleasure to referee Colwyn bay whether at home or away. As a club you
have taken some big steps towards your goal over the past few seasons
and becoming the top rugby in North Wales. Keep it up. I intend to take
a total rest from active involvement in rugby during next season and be
a spectators before returning to follow in your footsteps and help
referees develop, so on your best behaviour please. Rugby is about
passion, fun and friendships and long may it continue. Best wishes for
the Cup Final and see you there. Many thanks again for your friendship |

Another magnificent performance at the end of a
gruelling two week period. Well done to all members of the playing
squad your commitment throughout the season but over the last
fortnight in particular has been outstanding particularly in view of
the loss of key players through injury etc. Have a break but keep
fit for the Final you can win it this year by playing to your full
potential.

You will recall my post it on 28
January 2008 regarding an Interesting Pullover Contest to be held at
CBRFC after the 1st XV home game nearest to Christmas 08,
(see details on my post it below dated 28 January 2008). At the time of
informing you about this spectacular event I said I would remind you
ever three months. This is your first reminder. You will be surprised
how long it takes to knit an Interesting Pullover; so if you haven’t
already done so, get those needles out and start knitting!!!

After our outstanding
performance and win against Caernarvon on Tuesday night Colwyn Bay have
been confirmed as runners up in the league with 1 match to spare.
Regardless of the result against Dolgellau we cannot be overtaken. We
will of course endeavour to collect maximum points from this final game. I
would just like to say a massive thank you to all the lads, coaching
staff and backroom boys involved in the squad this year. To lose 3 out
of our first 4 games and achieve what we have is fantastic. It has taken
a lot of commitment and hard work and is yet another step on our journey
to become as successful as we can. Our building process is sound in all
areas of the club both on and off the pitch and bodes well for the
future. Special mention to Pete Rice, Rhys Williams and Mark ' The Man'
Lewin who have been magnificent again this year. We now need to clear
the last hurdles and provide our supporters with another great game on
Monday in the Cup.

An excellent result against Caernarfon only club in North
Wales to score over 20 points against them this season and that is in 2
games. Lets finish the season with runners up spot and I hope a win in
semi final of the Nth Wales Cup against Nant Conway
A big thank you to the coaching staff and all the
players for their excellent commitment throughout the season.
Lets ensure that we all turn up on Monday vs Nant as
a CLUB to support the 1st XV that is all the CLUB from the Juniors
and Senior members

I
have
found out today, from a very reliable source, that after the last match
in Pwllheli my match report was not very well received by the Pwllheli
chairman, referring to the comments about intimidation, provocation and
foul play. I only report on what I see during the game and I have never
made anything up to harm the reputation of any rugby club, obviously
individuals have differing opinions of what they see during the game,
but when a group of people witness exactly the same incident and draw up
the same conclusions there must be a valid case for reporting the truth.

I agree with Beagle. We do not
consistently have enough surplus senior players to warrant the time and
effort of setting up a 3rd team. Energies should be focused on the
transitional period between our fantastic junior section and our 1st
team. This seasons successful 1st and 2nd teams are built around a core
of ex CBRFC youth team players who are reaching maturity ( rugby
maturity ) together. |

Regarding the 2XV game against Abergele. We recorded our
third successive big win (and second clean sheet) away from home. It was
to have been a home game but our pitch was deemed unfit.
More importantly 30 players turned up demanding to
play. We managed to get them all on in the end and without
disrupting our performance.
On this basis there has been talk of running a third
senior side but I think we would be overstretching ourselves at this
juncture. What is more important for the future of the club is to
get more Youth team games and players.

Regarding the game
against Ruthin - Firstly I would like to congratulate Ruthin on their
win, I thought their defence was outstanding and Jon's try was very well
worked and finished.
In truth the defeat
was hard to swallow for myself and the team having worked so hard to
get into a challenging position. All is not lost however and
hopefully this defeat will give us the impetuous to push on and win
our remaining games - a feat that we know we are very capable of
achieving if we put our minds to it. We still have a
massive interest in the cup and although the league is a far tougher
prospect we must keep up the pressure on the leaders.
We have a massive 3
weeks ahead and everyone has a big part to play - keep up the good
work.

Just a brief word to say a very big thank
you for all your hospitality last Saturday. What a marvellous bunch of
people you all are up there in Colwyn Bay. We had a fantastic time and
have some great memories. Apologies about the alcohol incident, we
didn't mean to cause a stir, just some over exuberant dad overstepping
the mark. If you're ever in this neck of the woods don't hesitate to get
in touch. Your boys are a credit to you and your club, please pass on
our compliments to them all. |

Excellent result boys, score line reflects the defensive qualities of
both teams. Very tough game and won by the slimmest of margins but
testimony to your character under pressure and capability to win any
game put in front of you if you just dig deep and believe it can be won.
Lets focus our collective energy on the upcoming fixture at home, attend
training in numbers and sharpen our attack and defence ready for a good,
old fashioned local derby.
Very proud of your efforts this season boys, lets keep on track until
the whole thing is done and dusted.

Interesting Pullover Contest – Christmas 2008 -
I know this is very
early notice, but it will give you plenty of time to start
knitting!! Over the past few years one of our senior members, Mike
Williams, has sported an “interesting pullover” over the Christmas
period. Graham Davies and I though it may be a bit of fun to hold an
“Interesting Pullover Contest” at Christmas 2008. The contest rules will
look something like this: The contest will take place after the home
game nearest to Christmas 2008. All competitors will pay a £5.00 contest
entrance fee. Half of the total entrance fees will be donated to the
Club’s 2008 chosen charity. The remaining half will be prize money. All
none competitors and the opposition team players will have one vote each
for the pullover they think is the most interesting. The votes will be
counted and there will be three prizes. Half of the prize money will go
to the winner. ¾ of the balance will be second prize and the remaining ¼
will be third prize. These rules may change before the event, but you
will be given plenty of notice. You will be reminded of this contest at
three month intervals between now the date of
the event. So, get knitting!!!!!

Well done to the first team for their win against Bala...Special thanks
to the first team that supported us against Shotton, with Shotton edging
the game with a last kick of the game drop goal (gutted). It was good to
see the second team assemble a large squad of talented individuals, also
with other talented individuals injured/not available it bodes well for
Colwyn Bay RFC...unfortunately we did not gel as a team, we were beaten
by a team on Saturday with more hunger/desire, confidence, better
fitness levels, knowledge of the game and handling skills - whether it's
attending training, better preparation before a match or believing in
your own abilities each one of us needs to reflect on Saturday's
performance and previous matches against Llandudno, Mold, Shotton (away)
and Denbigh (away) and rectify any issues highlighted above.
