29th April '06 COLWYN
BAY 19 MOLD 31
With fifth position in the league secured there was only pride at stake in this final game of the season against undefeated champions Mold. Both
sides started strongly with neither willing to compromise and for the first
quarter both had scoring opportunities but stout defences were to the fore.
Eventually though Mold pressure earned them a penalty to give them a 3-0 lead.
Bay continued to press but indiscipline gave the visitors another penalty to
make it 6-0. There then followed a period of intense Mold pressure which
eventually gave them a converted try despite resolute Bay defence to make the
score 13-0. Bay were not to be outclassed and just before half time a typical
storming break by Ryan Hika saw him score wide out with Andy Williams-Owen
kicking a fine touchline conversion to make it 13-7 to Mold at half time. Bay began the second half were they left off and began to dictate play but again indiscipline let them down and Mold converted a further penalty for a 16-7 lead. A period of Bay pressure then saw them lay siege to the Mold goal line and a well worked move saw Jody Prior score under the posts with Andy Williams-Owen adding the two points to bring them within one score of the visitors at 16-14. This was short when Mold increased their lead a few minutes later with yet another penalty to make it 19-14 and then a Bay defensive error lat Mold in for an unconverted try 24-14. As the game went on neither side was gaining the upper hand until Bay Player/Coach Mark Earl received a yellow card and Mold were able to exploit the extra man and score a further converted try 31-14. After the return of Mark Earl Bay were able to take the game to Mold but time was running out but a further try was scored by Gareth Williams who had come on as a replacement for captain Dave Brown. Andy Wiliams-Owen just missed with a difficult conversion on the stroke of time to make the final score 31-19 to Mold. Who thus maintained their unbeaten season in the league. On the day penalties were the deciding factor with both sides scoring three tries and two conversions. The four penalties scored by the visitors proving decisive.
