Colwyn Bay 26 - Corwen 32

Colwyn Bay 2nds should have won this home league encounter at Brookfield Drive against  the weakened Corwen visitors last Saturday.  However their opponents never-say-die spirit saw them claw their way back from a 26-10 deficit after an hour to secure a surprise victory.

Corwen opened the scoring with their speedy right wing darting over to score in the first five minutes.  It was a shock to the Bay whose over-confidence and slack tackling had allowed such an early score.  They seemed to pull themselves together when in quick succession they scored two tries- a typical effort from Ritchie Evans at No 8 – bullocking over from short range followed by a mazey run from inside his own half with three powerful fend-offs from newcomer and scrum-half for the day Ashley James.  James potted both conversions.

Corwen responded with another unconverted try before fly-half Phil Dickson showed good pace to put the Bay 19-10 up at half time.  The Bay continued to break through weak Corwen tackling with ease to enable Sergio Cabazuelo (at inside-centre)  to score and with Phil Dickson converting, the Bay were cruising at 26-10 up five minutes into the second half.

Fair play to Corwen though: they gained heart from a quick riposte by that flying right wing again at which point Ashley James had to leave the field with a pulled muscle.  This clearly affected the Bay’s confidence as they lost all shape and the ability to tackle while a revived Corwen side stuck four more tries on them in a furious twenty minute passage of play during which they played with great heart and no little pace.

The Bay however could still have won if Phil Dickson’s strong run through the whole Corwen defence from well within his own half had not been cut down by a crucial tackle by Corwen' s last defender.  A disappointing day for the Bay- more solidity in defence and more distribution in attack may be the remedy.  Try and get down lads for training on Wednesdays at 7.pm to polish those skills and get some increased cohesion going with ball in hand.

Bay man of the match – Ritchie Evans.  Next game at home against Flint a week on Saturday the 28th October. Kick off 230pm. Photo call at 1pm.  Also what about supporting the 1sts this Saturday against Bethesda away in the first round of the North Wales Cup?
