BAY 2NDS BEST GAME SO FAR

 COLWYN BAY 2NDS 31            ABERGELE 2NDS 8

The Bay 2nds put in a blistering performance to open their North East Counties Premiership campaign with a four tries to one victory over a strong Abergele 2nds side at Brookfield Drive last Saturday.

Back to full strength, the Bay side dominated much of this game with all l5 players and the 3 replacements playing a disciplined game with scarcely a tackle missed or a pass dropped.

The Bay opened the scoring when scrum-half Barry Cravetto slotted a penalty to get the first of his eleven points for the game.  In fact Cravetto’s performance at the base of the scrum with Tom Blackwell at fly half outside him exemplified the Bay’s sureness with ball in hand and soundness with the kicking game.

Quick hands along the backs saw the Bay increase their lead when outside centre Adam Vallor touched down a converted try to put the home side 8 points to nil up.  Bay pressure intensified with sound play at the set scrum and line out resulting in a quick tapped penalty 5 yards out and for 2nd row Bob Blackwell to crash over through an increasingly frail and distracted Abergele defence.  Abergele came back however to slot a penalty leaving the score at half time 13-3 to the Bay.

The Bay started the second half as they had finished the first with a penalty from Barry Cravetto upon which they quickly capitalised  with a strong run from wing Steve Davidson who in trade mark style with a couple of juddering hand offs scampered in to score Bay’s third try.

Abergele at this stage strengthened their front five from the bench but still could not prevent Bay fly half and man of the match Tom Blackwell seizing on a loose ball and out sprinting the desperate Gele defence to join his father Bob in the try count.  Cravetto  converted to leave the Bay 28 points to 3 ahead.

Increased power in the scrum enabled Gele to force the Bay scrum backwards over their line to score a consolation unconverted try but this did not prevent the Bay surging back up field for Barry Cravetto to complete a productive day with the boot to take the final score to 31-8.

The Bay side are entitled to enjoy a well earned break as the Six Nations makes Saturday club rugby a non-event for most of the rest of the month but training will continue on Monday (at Rydal) and Wednesday at 7pm and it is hoped to have a flood lit fixture on Thursday 15th February at 7pm.  Watch this space!
