Flint 22 - 09 Colwyn Bay 2nds
Colwyn Bay 2nds welcomed in the New Year and opened their 2007
campaign with a tough match away to Flint. New Scrummaging laws brought in for
2007 caused much disruption during the game, with Bay's less experienced front
row finding it the harder to adjust to the new laws. However much credit must
go to the young Bay front row who showed great heart at the coal face. The 1st
minute of the game saw the painful departure of Lock Dean Henson, who was
taken to hospital with a suspected broken collar bone. To the rescue came
substitute Tristan Hird who seamlessly took over from Henson in the engine
room.
Flint pressed hard from the kick off, with strong individual
crashes from their big pack. Poor tackling from Bay allowed Flint to open the
scoring with a try and conversion. Flint had much of the possession, due to
their larger stronger more experienced pack, however Bay did manage some
forays deep into the Flint half. Luckily for Bay the dependable fly half and
kicker Andy Williams-Owen was on hand to punish any Flint ill discipline.
Williams-Owen scored all Bay's 9 points with 3 accurate penalty kicks. In the
second half good work by Bay pack members Captain Ritchie Evans, Mark Bratt
and Richard Chinary did even up the feel of the game. However Flint were the
better at putting together sustained attacks on the Bay's poor defence, and
scored 3 further tries to finish the game comfortable winners.
