Bay 2nds 20 - 8 Denbigh 2nds
The previous match between these teams was a one sided affair,
with Denbigh winning by 60 points. However this time Bay had their Captain and
Vice Captain back who were missing through injury during the previous
encounter. And it was them, Ritchie Evans and Bobby Blackwell who took the
game to Denbigh from the whistle. The first half saw Bay electing to play into
the strong wind, but this seemed to make no difference as the pack made deep
attacks into the opposition half. The strong wind hampered both sides attempts
to play a wide backs game. But Bay were lucky in that they had the experienced
kicking of fly half Andy Williams-Owen to rely on to gain them great
field positions deep in the Denbigh half. It was from one of
these good field positions that bay managed to force a handling error from a
Denbigh centre and Bay centre Dougie Graham was quickest to the spilled ball.
He skilfully dribbled the dropped ball over the muddy ground and scored near
the posts. Williams-Owen added the conversion. Straight from the restart
Denbigh showed they were no mugs and immediately score their own try by way of
nice flowing backs move to score out wide.
This brought the score line to 07 - 05. From the restart Bay
pack soon started making great inroads into the Denbigh half, with strong
rucking and mauling by locks Mark Bratt and Man of the Match Richard Chinary.
Chinary's work rate being superb thought the whole game. Even though the Bay
pack were only yards from the Denbigh try line the strong wind and wet
conditions gain hampered attempts to score another try. Denbigh stopped one
good backs attack from Bay, but only for young Bay fullback Tom Blackwell to
quickly take the opportunity to score a fantastic drop-goal despite the
terrible conditions. Following this was a good spell by Denbigh, who spent
some time in deep in the Bay half. The try of the match soon resulted. The Bay
pack won the ball back on there own 22 and a speculative long ball was passed
out to left wing Steve Davidson. Showing great strength and pace in the heavy
conditions he handed off the attempted tackles of the Denbigh outside centre
and winger and sprinted up the touchline and then cut infield sharply to leave
the two covering
defenders grasping at shadows, the try being scored between the
posts. Williams-Owen converted for a final score off 20-8.
