BAY SKINNED BY FLINT 22nd March '08 Colwyn Bay 2nds 24 Flint 1sts 36
The Bay 2nds campaign in the North East Counties League suffered a near mortal blow at Brookfield Drive last Saturday as they lost a game to a strong Flint side that they should have won by four tries (two converted) to five (four converted) and a penalty. In a strong cross wind the Bay were 14 points to nil up after 17 minutes with a try from flanker Mike McDonagh and wing Steve Davidson who throughout showed a return to paciness of old and hand offs of juddering precision. Davidson outpaced the Flint defence easily on the outside to run in from 60 yards out. Fly-half Steve Thatcher converted both tries. The visitors hit back with their first converted try but the Bay went further ahead after 26 minutes when No8 Mark “Shaft” Bratt rumbled over. Flint came back with another converted try and a penalty to leave the Bay 19 points to 17 ahead at half time. The Bay added to their lead 10 minutes into the second half when Davidson again outsprinted the covering Flint defence to dot down in the corner but this was their last score as injuries (Bratt – eye and centre Dan Eames-Hughes – thumb) and unnecessary substitutions left the home side weakened in defence and disorganised in attack. Flint however battled well to score three more tries (2converted)
