BAY 2NDS NOT SECOND BEST

Colwyn Bay 2nds 24 - Flint 20

Fielding probably their strongest side this season, the Bay 2nds pulled off a good home win against a strong and organised Flint side at Brookfield Drive on Saturday.  Although losing the try count three to four, first –time place-kicker Lem Hocknell was faultless from the spot with three conversions (two from wide out) and one penalty.

The young Bay front row found it hard at the set piece but improved line out work with Nick Noble prominent saw the Bay backs get enough possession to make their skills count.  Wing Lee Parkes opened the scoring for the Bay with a try wide out after slick interpassing through the whole backline.  Flint hit back with an unconverted try of their own before another Bay back move saw fly-half Dan Eames-Hughes release the other wing Steve Davidson round the blind side to scamper in evading the Flint cover in the corner.

Flint fought back well with another try to leave the Bay leading 14-10 at half time and early in the second half the visitors went into the lead with their third try before Lem Hocknell-at inside centre a strong presence worthy of a swift return to 1st team honours- slotted a penalty to enable the Bay to edge ahead in what was turning out to be a real ding-dong struggle.

The decisive moment came in typical fashion when flanker Sergio Cabezuelo put his head down to bullock his way through a couple of despairing Flint tackles to run in from 25 yards out to score under the posts with Lem Hocknell nailing his only relatively easy spot kick of the day.

Flint came back to score their fourth try but stout loose play from the Bay forwards where veteran Llew Williams was a mammoth presence in keeping an increasingly frustrated Flint side at Bay until the close.

The Bay’s next scheduled league game after the Autumn International break (why?) is against Denbigh 2nds on the 18th November away although an away friendly flood-lit fixture is planned against Bangor Normal on Monday the 6th November – kick off 7pm.

Bay’s man of the match: Lem Hocknell. Bay’s points’ scoreres: Tries: Lee Parkes, Steve Davidson and Serge Cabezuelo.  Conversions: Lem Hocknell (3). Penalties: Lem Hocknell (1).
