BAY COME CLOSE AGAINST TUDNO
Colwyn Bay 2nds 12 Llandudno 2nds 17 With the Bay’s North East Wales District League game against Corwen cancelled because Corwen could not produce a team, Llandudno stepped up to provide a hastily arranged friendly which contained no small amount of Christmas spirit and just the odd slug of rum punch. The visitors who fielded a strong side in the absence of senior action eventually prevailed by three tries ( 1 converted) to two (1 converted). Conditions on a hard but greasy pitch did not prevent an open game with Bay centre Jay Beardmore the focus for much second phase ball with his many tackle bursting rampages up the middle. The Bay found themselves a converted try up when wing Steve Davidson scooted through for an early try converted by fly half Steve Thatcher. Tudno hit back quickly with a converted try of their own with a fast breaking burst out of defence and then went further ahead with another try. The Bay hit back despite the loss of playmaker Thacher at fly half with a recurrent rib injury, with a well worked forwards try credited to skipper and lock Bobby Blackwell to leave the sides level at 12 all at halftime. Dogged defence saw both sides keep clean sheets until late in the second half when the visitors finally broke through to score the winning try. Credit to both sides for producing an enthralling local derby- a friendly it certainly was to set the Bay up well for their important League game against Denbigh next Saturday.
