COLWYN BAY 2NDS SHOW SPIRIT AGAINST THE CHAMPIONS COLWYN BAY 2NDS 12 MOLD 2NDS 46 Colwyn Bay 2nds opened their 2007 campaign in the North East Wales District’s League at Brookfield Drive on Saturday with a six-try (five converted) to two-try (one converted) loss against a strong and fast Mold side who showed their pedigree as reigning League Champions. After Mold scored an early penalty the Bay hit back when fly half Stephen Thatcher chipped over the visitor’s defence to run through on to his own ball and score close enough to the posts to enable to convert his own try to put the Bay into an early lead which the Bay resolutely defended until Thatcher himself had to leave the pitch for the rest of the game with a shin injury. At that stage the Mold machine enjoyed a higher zeal which saw them power over in three tries and a penalty before half-time. The Bay hit back spiritedly with an unconverted try wide out from wing Nick Trew after slick passing from the backs from a sustained period of well-controlled loose play from the Bay forwards with flanker and man of the match Sam Lewis Jones especially prominent. The Bay side failed to add to their score in the second half when the Mold all round strength began to pay off with three more converted tried despite introduction of man mountain Mark “Shaft” Pratt into the scrum which added a much needed measure of stability up front. A fairly heavy loss then for the Bay to open with but the side’s spirit bodes well for the rest of the season with the lesson learnt that first up tackling must not be missed.
