RHYL GUILE TOO GOOD FOR THE BAY Colwyn Bay Seconds – 5 Rhyl Seconds – 19 Rhyl were the visitors at Brookfield Drive last Saturday in a non-league friendly and the Bay were taught a good lesson by an experienced team who were disciplined enough to play to their somewhat limited strengths and guileful enough to exploit the Bay’s weaknesses and who prevailed by 3 tries to 1 in a game for the connoisseurs thoroughly enjoyed by the players but somewhat lacking in spectator appeal. Rhyl' s big and heavy forwards dominated possession in all phases of set play and were strong in the loose and with the Rhyl fly half relentlessly kicking the Bay backwards, the Bay had precious little possession but in a return to their spirited ways managed to hold Rhyl to only a 5 point to nil lead at half time. Pressure told in the second half however with Rhyl adding 2 further tries both converted. The Bay did not give up and their sustained efforts supported by much improved tackling gave them the consolation try they richly deserved with Dougie Graham at inside centre scooting through from the Rhyl 22 to touchdown between the posts. All in all an encouraging performance by the Bay with Alex Jones (prop) and Ritchie Evans (as ever) prominent up front. Special mention for evergreen Dave Jones at number 5 for a second full game in a row which isn’t bad for a man three times the age of some of his fellow pack members (who were very very young). Next game – Flint at home next Saturday. Bay man of the match – Alex Jones
