BAY TOO GOOD FOR ABERGELE
Abergele 2nds 0 Colwyn Bay 2nds 36
The Bay switched the latest round of their North East Counties League campaign because of pitch conditions to Pentre Mawr Park last Saturday and came away with an emphatic win against the Gele second string by six tries (three converted) to nil. This was the Bay’s second game in a row that they have won without conceding a point which speaks volumes for their fast improving defensive qualities and discipline. Kev Fellows at hooker and back in form wing Adam Vallor deserve a particular mention in this respect. The Bay opened the scoring on a sunny day with a slight wind advantage when skipper and flanker Ritchie Evans went over after 10 minutes close to the posts for flyhalf Steve Thatcher – also promiment defensively – to score the first of his three conversions. Further tries from full back Tom Williams, centre Dougie Graham and No 8 Mark “Shaft” Bratt before half time saw the Bay stretch their lead to 26 unanswered points. Into the wind in the second half the Bay forwards continued to scrap hard against a resilient Gele pack with evergreen superfit second row Bobby Blackwell well to the fore and senior prop John Beagley an ever present irritant at tight head. After 60 minutes flanker Phil Roberts rounded off a good handling move wide out to go over to get the Bay’s fifth try and Graham scored his second and the visitors final try when he seized on a kind bounce to run in unopposed. The Bay were well supported by a full bench who all had a run out. The level of support and commitment bodes well for a top three finish at the end of the season.
