BAY FRIENDLY ABANDONED COLWYN BAY 2NDS 10 BENLLECH 3 (Abandoned after 54 minutes) Bay 2nds had a week off from League duties last Saturday but a friendly game against Benllech at Brookfield Drive ended early with a suspected serious neck injury to flanker Mike McDonagh causing the match to be abandoned after 54 minutes while McDonagh was attended to by paramedics. Thankfully the injury was not as serious as first feared and after a trip to hospital McDonagh was soon home with his feet up nursing a very sore neck and some nasty bruising. Amidst that considerable concern the result of the game paled into insignificance. The Bay side were missing a few stalwarts who were resting but their replacements demonstrated the growing strength in depth at this level at the Bay. Returning fly-half Andy Williams-Owen bullocked his way over for a try after centre Dougie Graham had gathered a long kick to run in the Bay’s first. Full back Haydn Phillips’ kicking out of hand and immaculate fielding of the high ball in a strong cross wind were shine-out features of the Bay’s day. Sterling performances also in the 2nd row by tyros James Jones and Rob Galvin gave stability to the Bay scrum against a strong Benllech pack. The Bay 2nds are now second in the North East Wales District League and one point behind league leaders Wrexham and can look forward with some confidence to a crunch game in the League against rivals Mold away in two weeks time – their game next week against Wrexham 2nds having been postponed on orders from the WRU as it is an International Saturday. Many thanks too to young Lewis and Morgan Lumby for helping this old crock with water boy duties. Much appreciated.
