GELE TOO STRONG FOR THE BAY Abergele 1st XV 30 Colwyn Bay 2nds 0 The Bay travelled to Abergele on Saturday for their latest confrontation in the North East Wales League Championship and came off second best in a tough contest against an Abergele side who must be strong contenders for League honours this season. The Bay went down by 4 (2 converted) tries and 2 penalties to nil with a strong, mobile and big Abergele pack commanding most of the possession in the tight and at the line out. With wind advantage in the first half, the Bay were not able to clear their lines well enough and the early signs were ominous as the Gele powerhouse pack rumbled upfield with purpose. Stout defending from the visitors with outside centre Dougie Graham prominent kept the home side to one converted try and a penalty at half time. Abergele extended their lead in the second half with 3 tries (2 converted) and a penalty as their increasing dominance up front took hold. The Bay side however should not be too disappointed – their spirit and willingness to confront their outsize opponents remained consistent throughout with skipper for the day, Bay’s man of the match and second row Mark “Shaft” Bratt leading very much by example. The Bay now have a two week break for Internationals before Flint 1sts visit to Brookfield Drive on the 22 March. |
