WAKE UP CALL FOR THE BAY 2ND Colwyn Bay 2nds 8 Benllech 26 The Colwyn Bay 2nds came unstuck against a well organised and quick Benllech side in a friendly at Brookfield Drive last Saturday conceding four tries (three converted) to one and one penalty. The Bay side did well in the early exchanges but increasing Benllech pressure in the tight saw them gaining possession advantage which they were able to develop into two well-constructed converted tries. The Bay were only able to respond with a penalty by scrum half Gus Gawn to go into halftime 14 points to 3 down. The second half was a repetition of the first for the most part although the Bay’s play became more controlled in the set play with evergreen No 8 Llew Williams especially prominent. Good line out work from Skipper and flanker Ritchie Evans aided by accurate throwing from hooker Kev Fellows and sound defence work by No 7 Rick Chinery gave the Bay hope and produced their only try from winger Steve Davidson. Man of the match for the Bay Nathan Hughes at tight head also provided an ever-present solid figure in both tight and loose. The fit and strong Benllech side prevailed however with two more tries leaving the home side well beaten and in need of a greater degree of support and control if their League programme is going to end unbeaten when they meet Rhyl 2nds in their next and last game of the season at Brookfield Drive on the 21st April. Bay scorers: Jay Beardmore 1 try; Gus Gawn 1 penalty.
