BAY CRUISE PAST CORWEN COLWYN BAY 2NDS 47 CORWEN 10 In their final game in the North East Counties League Colwyn Bay scored a bittersweet victory against plucky visitors Corwen at Brookfield Drive last Saturday by seven tries (six converted) to two. Bittersweet because Flint’s win at Denbigh by 20 points to 5 seems to have robbed the Bay of a promotion spot. The score suggests a fast and open game but that is far from the truth of a game that was disjointed and riddled with stoppages by an overenthusiastic referee. The Bay scored their first from the kick off as slack defending enabled wing Steve Davidson to stroll in virtually unopposed. Over- confidence and lack of control meant that it was not until halfway through the first period that centre Dan Eames-Hughes was able to carve a way through to the line. Corwen surprised the Bay by hitting back with a try of their own after rigorous rucking up front. However before half time Prop Chris Dentith was able to barge through to score. Fly half Steve Thatcher slotted his second of six conversions to make it 19-5 at half time. The Bay’s uneasy dominance continued in the second half with tries from full back Sergio Cabazuelo, scrum half Gareth Jenkins (playing with a fractured jaw) Steve Davidson again and finally flanker Phil Roberts. Thatcher converted all four. All Corwen were able to do was get a consolation try. A damp squib of a game to end the season then but a season that promises much for next year and thereafter for the Bay’s increasingly settled and committed side.
