THREE WINS IN A ROW FOR BAY 2NDS CORWEN 13 COLWYN BAY 2NDS 19 A trip down the Vale of Clwyd on a beautiful autumn day reaped rich rewards for a spirited Bay performance against Corwen which produced a three tries (2 converted) to one converted try victory for the Bay in the North East Wales District League last Saturday. The Bay’s win was built on a very strong performance up front with powerful performances in the front row from the young props Luke Thomas and Chris Dentith once again ably supported in the middle by hooker Nathan Jones. Any ball in the set was likely to go the Bay’s way such was their superiority in the front five with second row Bob Blackwell and Dean Henson prominent The visitors were lucky however to go into the lead after ten minutes when fly half Steve Thatcher’s missed penalty kick was pounced on by centre Nick Noble when Corwen fumbled behind their line. Thatcher converted. Corwen responded with a penalty but went further behind at half-time when skipper, No 8 and undoubted man of the match Ritchie Evans outflanked the defence to score. Thatcher slotted his second conversion to leave the Bay 14 points to 3 up at the turn round. The second period saw Corwen run hard at the Bay and some weak tackling saw the home side score a converted try and later a penalty to get within one point. Ritchie Evans however sealed it for the Bay with five minutes to go when he picked a good angle and scythed through the home defence to bring the Bay home safe at the end. Special mention must also go to Haydn Phillips at full back who fielded the high ball with assurance and continually returned it deep into Corwen territory to keep the Bay on the front foot throughout. |
