BAY 2NDS CLINCH NORTH-EAST COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP IN STYLE Colwyn Bay 2nds 56 Rhyl 2nds 17 Colwyn Bay 2nds romped to an emphatic victory against a severely depleted Rhyl 2nds side at Brookfield Drive last Saturday running in 9 tries (4 converted) and a penalty to 3 (1 converted) to complete a clean sweep against all other teams in the North-East Counties Championship. In glorious conditions on a hard ground with a strong breeze whistling across the ground, the Bay saw tries from No 8 stalwart Llew Williams who scored two thanks largely to innate positioning sense; inside centre Dave “Lemon” Hocknell also crashed in from distance to score two more; man of the match and chief playmaker at fly-half Tom Blackwell again fashioned two scintillating scores. With winger Alex Wilkinson, scrum half sub Haydn Phillips and John Beagley (who bounced in from close) rounding off the try fest, this was a rousing display of fluency and strength by the Bay side against a brave Rhyl side who were missing at least ten of their regulars. Barry Cravetto at scrum half slotted 4 conversions and one penalty. Well done lads but may this reporter take the opportunity of thanking the unsung heroes of the Bay 2nds set up Ian Jones, Henry Jones-Hughes and Lee Parkes for their unswerving loyalty to the team whose contributions to the side’s success this season are just as important to the good results as are those who perhaps have been more obviously in the limelight. Bay Scorers: Tries Llew Williams (2), Lem Hocknell (2), Tom Blackwell(2), Alex Wilkinson, Haydn Phillips and John Beagley. Conversions: Barry Cravetto (4) Penalties: Barry Cravetto (1) |
