Further to Brian's
comments can I also add my thanks to the
players for Saturdays effort at COBRA
particularly those who travelled from afar
and those who came at very short notice. You
all played very well against a side that
obviously plays together week after week and
you were not disgraced. With a settled side
the result could well have gone our way. Let
us go down there in March and show them what
we are capable of in the league.

Happy New
year to all Members and Friends. To start
off the New Year with a bit of fun, on
Friday evening 27 January 2012 we are
holding a "Pig Race" at CBRFC. This is a bit
like horse racing but with pigs. As our grounds
man won't allow us to have pigs running
around the pitches, we are bringing the
event indoors!! OK, so we won't be using
real pigs. But watching the model pigs
racing is just as much fun. Come and join us
for this fun evening. You can bet on you
favourites (just like real racing)
and celebrate your successes. There will be
food provided which includes Mochdre
Butchers excellent pies. (It's worth coming
just for them alone). The cost is £10.00 a
head. Please pay this to John Broadway, Dave
Edwards or leave it behind the bar in an
envelope marked, "Pig Races 27 Jan 2012".

Well done against
Widnes Swans last Saturday. If we had been provided
with a fair referee you probably would have won that
match. In the words of the President of Wales Rugby
League, “In all my years at the top level of rugby
league I have never seen such a biased referee”. In
any event, you can not have a game without the man
with the whistle. Let us hope we never have one as
bad as that in the future.
Now for the positive
stuff. You played six matches and won five.
Outstanding for a bunch of guys whose normal game is
rugby union. By the way you performed, the Widnes
Swans committee thought you were an established
rugby league team. The enthusiasm and camaraderie
displayed over the past couple of months is a credit
to you all. Take that enthusiasm back to you rugby
union clubs and you will have a successful season.
Thanks to Ray and his
coaching team for an outstanding job in preparing
you all to meet good standard opposition and beating
them. I look forward to seeing you all again at the
end of the 2011/12 union season. Tell you pals about
rugby league and bring them along. Best wishes to
you all. |

Well done Conwy
Celts!! An excellent win against the Panthers.
Considering that this was the first full match of
rugby league many of you had ever played, your
knowledge and understanding of the game was
outstanding. This is down to the excellent coaching
you have been getting from Ray and Paul together
with your commitment and enthusiasm. Watching the
match was a living legend in rugby league, Andy
Gregory. He played his first game as scrum half for
Wigan at age 17. He went on to play for England and
Great Britain. He was very impressed with the way
you played the game considering it was the first
time out for many. He also complimented Ray’s
enthusiasm and coaching skills. This was great
praise from one of the greats in rugby league. For
those of you who have not tried rugby league, get
down to the club on Wednesday evening and support
Ray and his coaching team. This will complement the
summer fitness training programme and will ensure
that you begin the 2011/12 rugby union season
physically fit and with enhanced ball and tackling
skills. Well done again Celts and my best wishes for
further successes over the next few weeks. |

Well done Conwy Celts
for an exciting and enjoyable game of Rugby League
against Prestatyn Panthers. It was a great win
against tough opposition. Considering this was
the first full game of RL many of you had played,
you gave an outstanding display. Watching the match
was a living legend in rugby league. Andy Gregory
played his first professional match for Widnes at
age 17. He went on to play for Warrington and Wigan.
He won 26 Great Britain caps. If you want to know
more about this guy, Google him. Also present at the
match was Mike Nicholas the President of the Wales

the standard of play and agreed that your enthusiasm
and commitment was outstanding. They realized that
you could not play to this standard without a
dedicated coach and the support you give him. Well
done Ray and your coach team for
a magnificent display. Any CBFRC players reading
this e mail should get along to Ray's coaching
sessions on Wednesday evenings. This will complement
the fitness training you are at present attending by
enhancing your ball handling and tackling skills. It
will also teach you defensive tactics that can be
carried over to Rugby Union. Well done again Celts.
Keep it up and let us see how many more games you
can win. |

Colwyn Bay Youth had a great day at Llangoed 7's on
Saturday.
Although organised at very short notice, the
youngest team in
competition by far showed great commitment that
meant the lads managed to make each game they played
competitive & entertaining affairs.
Never bowing to superior size strength or
experience of opposition the lads undoubtedly gave
each team they were matched up against a nasty
surprise. The lads to a man enjoyed their first 7's
experience & a place has already been booked for
next season. Thanks to the players - Rhodri,
Samuel, Dewi, Anthony, Lloyd, Dan, Spencer, Ieuan,
Jordan & Matt, I had a great day. Thanks to Mandy,
Morgan, Trilby, Paul, Mick, Mel, Dawn & Ann for the
hearty support. |

As most of you are aware I am the worst loser in the
world – I play to win and anything less is a
failure. It therefore goes without saying that our
relegation comes as a bitter blow to the club, the
team and me personally. I have heard a lot of
excuses and reasons however the harsh truth is that
we were just not good enough this year and
ultimately got what we deserved. The table doesn’t
lie and not only did we not win enough games but
scored the least amount of points and conceded the
most.
I cannot fault the commitment and efforts of a
hardcore of players – you know who you are. Without
you it would not even have come down to the last
game of the season.
The measure of anyone is how they deal with
adversity and we have to pull together, regroup and
start again with renewed vigor and enthusiasm. We
have some good young players coming through and some
experienced ones that can still make a difference.
We have already arranged for Mark Lewin to deliver a
12 week pre-season Training/Fitness program
commencing at 7pm on Tuesday 07th June
and have appointed Martin Rees as 1st
Team Coach. I will oversee all aspects of the squad
and assist with the sessions as and when I am both
available and required.
We will be training together as a Senior and Youth
squad and I urge all of you to be there on 07 June.
Our aim will be to start enjoying our rugby again,
have a good pre-season and go straight back up |

It is with regret that we report the death of John
Jones "Marley". John had been a playing member of
the club for many years. He was responsible, as
manager of the Job Creation schemes in the area, in
providing the labour for much of the initial work
done to the club when we moved here from Glan y Don
in the mid/late 1970s. John moved from Rhos on Sea
some years ago to live in Tregarth, outside Bangor. |

on questions from the world of rugby including the
Magners League, Six Nations, Heineken Cup, World
Cup, British Lions, in addition to the history and
playing record of the CBRFC Under 14s.The quiz was
won by Winger and Full Back Sean Harrison who

sponsor money raised by the parents and players to
date on specific events for this tour is over

thanks and especially to the Rawickii family from

Tim Crook
Tim Crook was prop and captain
of the North Wales Rugby Team died recently. His
obituary notice is below
Our records show that he
played between 1960-67. He was a member of the side
that defeated Welsh Captain David
Watkins' Monmouthshire side in 1967 an event which
to this day rankles Watkins.
He, like everyone of this
list, was a former North Wales player. Once
of unacknowledged band who kept the flame of rugby,
our national game, burning in North Wales
In 1960 he played with David
Airey as hooker and A Yates in the front row; in
1963 he played with Wrexham's E Butler as hooker
and Rhyl's B Williams and in 1964 against London
Welsh his front row partners were G Sauders and I.
W. Jones. In the famous 1967 game his partners were
David Mycock and Neil Ashcroft.
This is a copy of the
notification I received from the NWRU. As a fellow
team mate of Tim's for CBRFC and N. Wales, wanted to
pass on the news to others players from that era who
knew Tim. |

U18
Mermaids had their first games of the season today
at the National 10s in Llandovery - a really early
start (5am!). There were several new girls in the
team - 3 had just joined us from the U15s - a big
step up for Rebecca Broadway, Emily McMullen &
Rachael Edwards. Several key members were missing,
either through illness/injury
or other commitments. The team lost the first 2
matches - against very tough opposition - Cardiff
Quins (22- 0) & Cynon Valley (22- 0) - but then went
on to comprehensively beat Newport 12- 0. A great
performance. Well done girls.

Due to the vast numbers of people wanting to become
members of Colwyn Bay Rugby Club, I have got someway
behind in issuing Membership Booklets. I am on
holiday for the next ten days, so issuing these will
take a little longer than normal. Please bear with
me and be assured that your 2010/2011 membership
booklet will be ready for collection at the club by
the end of September at the latest. One of the
downsides of being the most popular rugby club in
North Wales. |

Thank you all for making our annual golf day a huge
success. Although the weather wasn't as good as last
year, we did see some sunshine towards the end of
the competition. Congratulations to all those who
took home prizes. However, an event of this nature
is more about taking part, meeting old friends and
having a good time. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank those who sponsored prizes. Now
the important bit. Next year's Golf Day will be
Saturday 10 September 2011. As more and more people
keep asking to be included in the competition, I
have persuaded the professional at Rhos on Sea to
give us 30 places. As with this year's tournament, I
will give all of those who played first refusal for
next year's places. I will contact all this year's
competitors in June 2011 giving them the option join
us. There will be a response deadline for about mid
July. Any spaces left after that date will be open
on a, "first come first served basis". Thanks once
again for your participation. |

Congratulations to the Junior Section for producing
such a comprehensive Handbook. The information is
well laid out an easy to understand. Quality
innovations of this nature can only be good for the
club and indicates that our future is in good hands.
Well done Craig and team. |

Thanks to all members who have responded to
membership renewal notices. Subs are coming in thick
and fast and we are well on target to beat
last years preseason subs income record. Members who
have not yet paid their subs for 2010/11 season, it
would be very much appreciated if you could do so as
soon as possible. The first class facilities at
CBRFC have been achieved through the generosity of
sponsors, fund raising events and a strong
membership. Annual subs ensure we have a firm
foundation upon which we can maintain and continue
to build your club and to improve upon its current
excellence. If you require renewal membership
application forms or new membership application
forms, these can be collected at the club.
Alternatively you may contact me direct. |
