These were the final games of
the season before the squad moves up an age group. The team were
determined to finish in style before hanging up their boots for the
summer. They played a total of five pool games during an extended
day at Llandudno. The team began against Rhyl and notched up an
early win which raised spirits. Next up were Nant Conwy, the Bay
competed well but feel victim to two break away tries. The team then
played Pwllheli and raced to a comfortable lead before some lazy
tackling allowed them to come back and draw the game. The Bay's best
performance game against Mold, with a comprehensive display of
running rugby. The last game was a winner takes all affair with
Denbigh deservedly qualifying for the semi-final in the end. A
creditable display by all the squad.

Colwyn Bay 7-Denbigh 12.
The Bay competed Anglo Welsh tournament in Wrexham.
Their victory on Friday night may have counted against them as the
team were unable to hit their previous good form. They dominated
possession against Denbigh but fell victim to 2 break away tries.
They battled hard with Sam Earl scoring and converting a well worked
try.
Colwyn Bay 0-Ruthin 35
Colwyn Bay 0-Nant Conwy 35
The Bay faced the two subsequent finalists in their
next pool games. Unfortunately the team ran out of energy and fell
to two disappointing defeats to the two strongest teams in this age
group. |

Colwyn Bay 25-Old Wesley
20
Colwyn Bay welcomed a touring
Irish team with a hotly contested game on Friday evening. The Irish
are a well established club and provided an excellent evening's
entertainment. They began with some good running skills culminating
in a well worked score down the wing. This served to stir the home
team into action. There were a series of hotly contested breakdowns
with Tom Cuddihy scoring following his trademark bullocking run, he
was well assisted by Seb Marshall who dominated up front. The
conditions were hard underfoot with both sides picking up minor
knocks along the way. The Bay realised that they would need to get
the ball out wide to allow the backs to use their pace.
The tourists began to tire in
the second half although neither team dominated possession. Two
interception tries from Sam Earl and a well worked forwards score
from Seb Marshall drew the scores level. Some good cover defence
from Sam Holt on the wing prevented the Irish from breaking out
wide. The final say went to the Bay as Peter Jones finished a well
worked backs move to score. Well done to all the squad.

Colwyn Bay 15 - Llangefni 10
The
Bay played a committed Llangefni side. As they were short the Bay
lent two players to the opposition. The team dominated early
possession but were held up by excellent tackling, led by the on
loan Bay player William Head. After sustained pressure the Bay
scored two tries before an excellent blind side response by
Llangefni. The larger Bay forwards tired in the second half heat and
Llangefni continued to press. Sam Earl scored a good break out try
and the Bay held on to win.

Bay 30-Caernarfon 0
This was a
chance to field a strong side against Caernarfon for the first time
this season. The Bay began strongly following kick off and
only committed defence get them out. The team were patient and
continued to move the ball through the backline. The half-backs Sion
Edwards and Ivor Featherstonehaugh bossed proceedings. Eventually
the Bays pace told with Sam Earl and Peter Jones running hard out
wide.
The Bay fielded
some less experienced players in the second half with Joe Kilpatrick
and Olly Thomas working hard in the pack. Connor Hogan and Joe
Fisher carried well. Some good defence kept Caernarfon out. Credit
should go to the backs for a match winning performance.

Bay 10-Southport 5.
Next up the Bay
faced a touring side from England. This was an excellent game with
the Bay facing a physically larger side. The squad responded with
some robust tackling by Peter Jones, Sion Edwards and Sam Earl. The
forwards played their part with Connor Williams and Carwyn Knights
making strong breaks. The Bay used their pace well and went ahead
through a well worked score.
Southport
replied with a well taken blindside try. The game remained on a
knife edge with both sides unlucky not to be awarded scores. In the
second half the Bay went ahead before a tense finish in which
the team dug deep to earn a hard fought victory. This was an
excellent double by the team.

Colwyn Bay
0-Ruthin 47
It was back to
earth with a bump against the strongest team in this age group. In
the first half this was compounded by playing up the slope into the
wind as well! The team struggled to get out of their 22 and Ruthin
scored some well worked tries through their forwards. Seb Marshall
and Ruby Roberts tackled well in the tight but the forwards took
time to get going.
In the second
half the Bay woke up only conceding one try. Sion Edwards and Sam
Earl worked the blindside well and were unlucky not to score. Tom
Cuddihy, William Opie and Sam Holt worked well out wide despite the
Bay missing a couple of regular backs. A disappointing score line
but the team showed real commitment in the second half. The Bay are
continuing to develop as a unit.

Colwyn Bay
45-Bro Ffestiniog 14.
This game
against a team with limited experience gave an opportunity for all
the squad to have a run out. Bro began with some spirited play. In
ideal conditions the team played some excellent running rugby. Ivor
Featherstonehaugh controlled the game from fly-half with some good
breaks from Peter Jones, Sam Earl, Sam Holt and William Opie in the
backs. The team scored some well worked tries. The forwards tackled
well, led by Tomos Cuddihy and Ruby Roberts. In the second half
several newer squad players got involved in the action gaining some
valuable experience. Man of the match Sam Earl for some elusive
running.

Colwyn Bay
59-Rhyl 12.
This was a
comprehensive team performance involving all the squad. The game
started with an interception try by Rhyl following a loose pass from
the kick off .The Bay dug in and battled up the sloping pitch with
some committed drives by the forwards who were well supported by
some determined runs by the backs, including Ivor Featherstonehaugh,
William Opie and Peter Jones. The Bay scored three first half tries
but Rhyl battled hard and the Bay led 21-12 at the break.
The Bay cut
loose in the second half playing down the hill. Ruby Roberts and Tom
Cuddihy led by example driving well in the tight. Sion Edwards
controlled the game well at scrum-half and Sam Earl used his pace
out wide to break through the Rhyl defence. The team off-loaded well
in contact and were able to clear out effectively in the rucks and
mauls.

14-Llanduno 14
This fixture
is always much anticipated and today's game was no different. The
first ten minutes were scoreless with some committed defence by both
teams. The forwards were as committed as ever with Joe Fisher
outstanding in the loose. The backs benefited from good box
kicking by Sion Edwards at scrum-half. Ruby Roberts crashed over for
the Bay's first try following sustained forward drives. Despite
excellent cover tackling by William Opie and Sam Earl, Llandudno
drew level before the break.
The second
half was an equally tight affair although the Bay dominated
possession. Carwyn Knighs scored a great individual try before
Llandudno broke back to level the score. This was a committed team
display and ultimately the squad were disappointed to run out with a
draw.

0-Nant Conwy 28
The Bay played
close rivals Nant Conwy on a sunny but cold morning. From the outset
this was a highly committed affair with good tackling throughout.
Initially the Bay held out but allowed a soft try from a penalty.
The breakdown was key and Nant's' skills were sharper and they
recycled the ball well. The team held on well with committed
tackling by Sion Edwards and Ivor Featherstonehaugh in the backs.
Nant scored two further tries by offloading well as the Bay tired.
After the break the team rolled their sleeves up and the forwards,
particularly Ruby Roberts and Tom Cuddihy carried well. They were
only stopped by some last ditch tackles from Nant. The Bay showed
great spirit and refused to lie down.Nant managed a breakout try and
in the end run out deserved winners. A great effort by all the
squad.

Bay 14 Caernarfon 21
Playing in
adverse weather conditions and on a muddy pitch, the Bay welcomed
Caernarfon. Caernarfon scored their first try very early into
the match which caught the Bay unawares. A second try followed
soon after. The Bay team were slow to get going and Caernarfon
scored a third try before half time.
After an
inspiring team talk at half time, the Bay came back fighting.
Surging drives by Ruby Roberts, Carwyn Knights and Connor Williams
brought the Bay close to the try line but Caernarfon weren’t giving
up. With consistent driving and some excellent defensive
tackling by the Bay, this led to a quick off load pass to Ivor
Fetherstonhaugh, who with a determined run over half the pitch, gave
the Bay their first try and raised their spirits. The Bay
continued to exert pressure on Caernarfon and this led to Sion
Edwards crossing for their second try.

26-Bethesda 21.
The team made
a long awaited return to action following the weather enforced lay
off. They welcomed Bethesda to Brookfield Drive and served up a
thrilling game. Bethesda scored a soft try early on before the game
took off. The forwards carried all day in heavy conditions
,Seb Marshall,
Joe Fisher and Ruby Roberts made some surging drives which was
backed up by some good clearing out. Bethesda were equally
competitive and were determined not to take a backward step. The Bay
forwards continued to exert pressure and were rewarded with a couple
of drive over tries which were converted.
The second
half continued in the same vein with the Bay doing well to keep
their aggression in check despite some provocation. The backs played
their part dealing with a talented Bethesda centre by tackling well,
particularly Sion Edwards and William Opie. The Bay scored two
further tries with some excellent off-loading by all the team.
Bethesda came back with a score of their own but the Bay held on for
a hard fought victory.

With more than half the regular
first team unavailable this was going to be a tough ask against
a full strength Llandudno team. This was an opportunity to test
some newcomers. Aiden O'Leary stepped up to the mark in the
forwards with some surging runs. Joe Fisher also continued his
development in the tight. Unfortunately the Bay lacked pace out
wide and were continually caught on the break. Some weak
tackling compounded the errors. This game gave the coaches an
insight into the current progress of players at the half-way
mark of the season. It reinforced the need for players to
regularly attend as many training sessions as possible.

Colwyn Bay 19
Rhyl 19
After an enforced two week lay off
due to the weather the squad were happy to be back on a muddy
pitch at Brookfield Drive. They took part in a highly
entertaining game with local rivals Rhyl. The away team started
the brighter with a break-away try down the blindside. The team
were stung into action with Thomas Cuddihy, Ruby Roberts and Seb
Marshall carrying well in the forwards. In heavy conditions
possession was key and the Bay backs showed good handling
skills, particularly Carwyn Knights under the high ball and Sam
Holt at scrum-half..
The game was evenly matched
throughout with both sides exchanging tries. There were debut
tries for Sam Holt and Olly Thomas for the Bay this season. It
was particularly pleasing to see squad players such as Joe
Fisher and Olly Thomas tackling well and stepping up their game.

Colwyn Bay 5-Pwllheli 35 |
|
The Bay were short of four key
players but were anxious to keep developing the squad players.
Despite the recent rain the pitch held up well underfoot. The
forwards were slow to get going and were guilty of attacking in
ones and were not prepared to clean out in the contact area.
Thomas Cuddihy with ten tackles, and Joe Kilpatrick led by
example with some outstanding tackling in defence. Pwllheli were
able to dominate the contact area and won good ball for their
backs. The Bay backs received little quick ball but defended
well ,led by Ivor Featherstonehaugh, Sam Holt and William Opie.
They are beginning to develop as a unit.

Colwyn Bay 45-Llandudno
19.
This local derby is always eagerly
anticipated by both players and parents. In heavy conditions the
Bay put on an excellent display of controlled running rugby .The
pack found some real drive lead by Ruby Roberts and Connor
Williams .Both these forwards tackled and carried all day.
The backs really clicked as can
be demonstrated by the number of try scorers. I vor
Featherstonehaugh was the standout player in the centres with
some crunching tackles. The ball was moved away from contact and
there were several well worked scores. This was a real team
effort by all the squad of which they should be proud.

Colwyn Bay 0 -
Caernarfon 45
Due to the
lack of availability of more than half of the team this was always
going to be a tough ask for a second string team. Three players made
their full debut, Phoebe Hopkins, Seamus Mcgee and Luke Jones. Some
other squad members got a run out as well. It was the experience of
Thomas Cuddihy, Sam Holt, Ruby Roberts and William Opie that showed
on the day. Ruby Roberts led the forwards with her customary runs
while William Opie,4 tackles, and Sam Holt,3 tackles, led the
defensive effort. Unfortunately this was not matched by the rest of
the team and Caernarfon ran out easy winners.
Man of the
match William Opie.

Colwyn Bay
competed in the Mold tournament with teams from North Wales and
North West region. This is always a big step up but gives the
players valuable experience.
Colwyn Bay
0-Ruthin 30
This was an
extremely tough start against a fiercely competitive team. The Bay
relied on good defensive work by Peter Jones. The forwards were slow
to clear out the contact area meaning that the backs had little ball
to work with going forward. Ruthin ran out deserved winners.
Colwyn Bay
0-Caldy 25
The next game
was against the eventual pool winners. They had a couple of large
players who crashed through the Bay defence to score. Seb Marshall
defended well in the forwards and this was backed up by Sam Earl in
the backs. Unfortunately the Bay were still reluctant to commit to
the contact area.
Colwyn Bay
5-Lymm 10
What a
difference a committed set of forwards made. They were able to clear
out and drive over supplying clean ball to the backs. The backs
fought hard with Ivor Featherstonehaugh driving hard. Connor
Williams, Tomos Cuddihy and Seb Marshall gave a spirited display up
front. The Bay were unlucky not to come out with more.

hit their stride in this game against a larger team. The squad of
Tomos Cuddihy, Carwyn Kights, Ollie Thomas, Sophie Foxcroft,
Connor Williams, Seb Marshall, Sam Holt, Ivor Featherstonehaugh, Sam
Earl, William Opie and Peter Jones all deserve a mention. They
showed the fighting spirit and contact skills required at this level
to progress. They only lost to a try on full-time. They represented
the Bay with credit.

Bay 0-Ruthin 50
The Bay faced
one of strongest teams in their age group in Ruthin. Unfortunately
they were further hampered by injury and sickness in the forwards.
They were confronted by a well drilled and extremely physical side
who gave an excellent display of tight rugby. The Bay were slow to
step up with the forwards well off the pace. Consequently the
talented backs were unable to get any go forward ball. Connor
Williams performed well at second row leading by example. Peter
Jones battled hard in the backs and narrowly missed out on scoring
,being held up over the line. Although a disappointing result the
team will learn much from the commitment of the Ruthin players.

Colwyn Bay
28-Bethesda 21
This was a
thoroughly entertaining game with both sides fully committed. The
tight five were led by Ruby Roberts, Seb Marshall and Tom Cuddihy.
They were able to re-cycle the ball in contact and also put in a
strong defensive effort.
The backs were
able to concentrate on their alignment. Carwyn Knights fitted in
well at outside centre and their was some good tackling by William
Opie and particularly Sam Earl.
The points
were evenly shared between the backs and the forwards with Ruby
Roberts and Sam Earl scoring two a piece. Despite late pressure and
the referee loosing track of time the Bay held on for a hard fought
victory. Man of the match goes to Seb Marshall for his ten tackles.

Colwyn Bay 0-Nant Conwy 40
Despite the
score line the Bay fought hard throughout this game. The forwards
led by Seb Marshall, Tom Cuddihy and Ruby Roberts repeatedly
defended the line with counter-drives. Connor Williams made his
debut in the second row with a promising start.
The first half
was a tight affair with Nant going in 14-0.The backs were guilty of
losing their shape and in the second half Nant cut loose with some
fine individual tries. The Bay tackling was far better with Sam Earl
making a total of 11 tackles in the game. All players were tireless
in defence and will not meet a better set of backs this season than
Nant. A hard day at the office but there is plenty to be proud off
in this performance.

Due to other
commitments a vastly depleted team travelled to Llangefni. They were
rewarded with a really competitive game which could have gone either
way. The forwards took a while to get their recycling game going
with solo efforts being turned over. Ruby Roberts, Sophie and Seb
Marshall were prominent. The backs retained their shape with Tom
Cuddihy playing out of position at centre. Again Sion Edwards and
Seb Marshall led the tackle count. Tries were scored by Ruby Roberts
and Tom Cuddihy. Carwyn Knights converted one try.

1-Denbigh 7
The first game
of the season is always much anticipated and the Bay began at
Denbigh in baking heat. This was compounded by a steep pitch. The
team had several new techniques to master including scrums and
lineout's. Denbigh provided a strong challenge as they did last
season.
On a large
pitch the backs were well marshalled at fly-half by William Opie.
Ivor Fetherstonhaugh, Alex Harpum, Carwyn Knights ,Olly Thomas and
Sam Holt positioned themselves well in the backline. The forwards
toiled in the heat and still need to work on their fitness. Thomas
Cuddihy, Seb Marshall and Ruby Roberts made telling breaks and Sion
Edwards tackled his heart out at scrum-half. Denbigh were always in
control as the Bay ran out of steam in the second half. To their
credit the team continued to work hard and scored a try at the last
whistle.
