Under 11's Match Reports Sunday 27th April '08
CBRFC Under 11s 0 v CBRFC Under 12s 29
Ireland Tour 2008 Sunday 13th April '08 Due to damaged pitches, Bangor hosted the Colwyn Bay U11's tournament on Sunday, once again well supported by sponsors, First Hydro Co. With Flint unable to field a team it was left to Bay, Nant Conwy, Llandudno and Caernarfon to fight for honours in this annual tournament.
Bay contested a tight game with Llandudno
in their first game, with Llandudno taking the lead in the first half,
but Bay then dominating much of the rest of the game, drawing level with
a try just before half time from Connah Harding. The Bay forwards,
including Jordan Edwards and Jacob Trotter repeatedly drove Llandudno
back in the second half and deserved another try, but resolute defending
by Llandudno prevented Bay creeping over the try line again, despite
their best efforts in the muddy, tacky conditions. 5-5 the final result.
In Bays' second game they came up against
eventual tournament winners Caernarfon and despite Bay going into a
deserved early lead after good forward pressure led to Remy Shiel
charging over, Caernarfon then took over with their big pack gradually
dominating play with the conditions suiting Caernarfon, who kept the
ball in the forwards well and repeatedly drove Bay backwards. By half
time Caernarfon led 10-5 and in the second half they continued to bully
Bay, who's brave defence eventually relinquished 3 more tries for the
final score to be 25-5 to Caernarfon.
Their last game saw Bay up against Nant
Conwy in a repeat of a fixture Bay won only two weeks before. On this
occasion Nant were able to release their backs more effectively and
using the slope to their advantage caused Bay to be on the back foot
most of the half. It looked as if Bay would hold out to half time but
two quick tries just before the break saw Nant hold a comfortable lead
into the first half. Bay now used the slope to their advantage and
dominated much of the possession in the second period. When Mattie
Humphreys broke the defence and scored early on for Bay it looked as if
Bay would stage a fine comeback, but Nant's defence held strong and the
final score was 10-5 to Nant.
Well done to all the players who took part
from the four teams for a Tournament played in good spirit and to a high
standard.

Sunday 6th April '08 Colwyn Bay 20 Southport 25 Bay played host to Southport for the first time at this age group and both teams competed in two great games. In the first Bay got off to a flying start dominating possession and being allowed to run by the bigger Southport team. This resulted in 3 quick tries, the first for Remy Shiel, peeling off round the back of the scrum to go over. The next was a driving run from Lewis Shaw from 5 yards out, taking 2 defenders with him and the third a long run in by Andrew Teese after good passing by the backs out to the winger. Southport then came back into it, scoring a try of their own before Bay scored again through scrum half Remy Shiel. With Southport pulling another back before the break, the visitors then kept that momentum going into the second half gradually dominating play and forcing Bay back, despite the best efforts of Adam Smith, Jack Morris and man of the match Harri Chinery. However Southport proved to be too strong in the closing minutes, scoring 3 tries of their own to win the game. Colwyn Bay 40 Southport 20 The second game started much like the first with Bay dominating straight away, through forceful forward play and fast individual runs from the back line. Mattie Humphreys charged over for Bays first, before man of the match Luke Rawicki scored the first of his two first half tries with a great length of the field effort, outpacing 4 chasing Southport defenders. Connor Harding scored Bays next try in the corner helped on by good forward support from Jordan Edwards, David Edwards and Nicholas Ingham. Southport scored a try of their own before Scott Kane gave Bay a good half time lead with a blindside run from the back of the scrum. The second half was more even, with Southport battling well up front in particular and securing more ball for their backs. However the three tries they scored in the half were cancelled out with three for Bay, with Jacob Trotter running half the pitch to score, Connor Harding getting his second and hesitancy in the Southport defence allowing Glen Davies to pounce on a loose ball to score Bays final try. Good tackling by Jake Wilson and Tom Jones who stood out in defense and Bay refused to yield any more tries despite the pressure from the away team.
29th & 30th March '08 Shield Winners This weekend Colwyn Bay Rugby Club played host to the Team Tours Direct Welsh International Rugby Festival for all age junior age groups and the Bay U11's played tremendously well to win the Challenge Shield in what was a competition of the highest standard. On the Saturday, Bay played one game in atrocious conditions of driving rain and ankle deep mud against Lisburn from Northern Ireland. Unable to get any rhythm going they lost that quite convincingly 20-0. Due to the cancellation of the rest of the days play due to the weather, Bay then had to travel to Prestatyn to play the remainder of their games on Sunday and they looked a different side. Despite losing their first game of the day against another big, strong Irish side, Cooke B, 15-5, Bay showed glimpses of their ability with Oscar Astbury scoring Bays only try. The forwards, including Nicholas Ingham, Callum Teesdale and Matthew Patricolo all had to fight hard against a bigger pack. The next game saw Bay triumph 10-5 against Scottish side Melrose A, with two tries from Jacob Trotter sealing it. In this game Bay edged most of the play and possession and there was great running from backs Harri Parkes, Andrew Teese and Rory Russell as well as solid tackling which prevented further scores from Melrose. In their final pool game they were up against local team Nant Conwy and Bay provided their best performance of the day, stifling out Nant's attack. A great individual break and run from Connah Harding led to Bays opener and before the break Jack Morris stormed over from close range to give Bay a 10-0 half time lead. Bay then found themselves under great pressure from Nant in the second half, but defended brilliantly with tackles coming in from all the team, but with Scott Kane, Luke Rawicki and Remy Shiel all playing their part. Only with the last play did Nant manage to score, but by then Bay had secured themselves a spot in the Shield final against Cooke A. This was another fine game with Bay taking the game to the Irish team early on, recycling quick ball and allowing Connah Harding to cross for Bays first try. Prop forward David Edwards' hard work all day was then rewarded with a strong run, breaking several tackles to make the score 10-0. Bay then had to defend for much of the rest of the game but as in their previous game they all rallied to the cause, particularly Tom Jones and Luke Wilson who put in some huge tackles, and they were determined not to let Cooke score. Final score 10-0 to Bay.
Sunday 9th March '08 Colwyn Bay 26 Bala 38
Having played an exciting end to end game
earlier in the season, this was always going to be a close, high scoring
affair. Bay's large squad was split to allow as much game time as possible
for the players. Bala got off to a fine start taking advantage of Bays very
poor tackling early on, which gifted them several early tries, although it
has to be said that Bala moved the ball around well and used their big
forwards to make useful yards and win the ball at the breakdown. At 33-0 Bay
used wholesale changes to the forwards and back line and immediately this
paid dividends with the direction of the game changing totally and Bay
taking control. Scrum half Remy Shiel released Connah Harding for a try down
the wing, followed quickly by a good break from Luke Rawicki which ended in
a try for Adam Stroud. Bay forwards pressed well with Adam Smith, Nicholas
Ingham, Callum Teesdale and Jordan Edwards dominating the ruck and maul.
This allowed Jack Morris to break free and score for Bay just before half
time. All three tries were converted by Adam Stroud to make the score 33-21
to Bala at the break. The second half continued much like the end of the
first with Bay dominating, but Bala defending doggedly. Connah Harding
scored another Bay try to bring the home team within a score. Great
scrapping by Jacob Trotter nearly led to another Bay try but a last bit of
pressure by Bala resulted in a final score to them on the final whistle.
Connah Harding was named man of the match for his tackling and harrying of
the Bala back line.
Sunday 2nd March '08 The Llangefni Rugby Club at
Under 11 age group could not field a team today and hence the CBRFC Under 11s
claimed the fixture. The spare time however was not wasted and subsequently
the whole squad involved in a full on match. This was in preparation for the
Team Tours Direct Competition on the 29th &30th March ,the First Hydro Co
Under 11s North Wales Tournament on April 13th 2008, and the Under 11s Tour of
the Republic of Ireland from the 18th to the 20th April 2008.Notable
performances from the day were from Jacob Trotter playing in the forwards for
today, Jack Morris at Hooker, Rory Russell at Fly Half showing some very quick
hands and feet, some very big hits going forward from Prop Lewis Shaw and some
aggressive flanker play by Matty Humphries.
Sunday 24th February '08 Chester U11's 5 Colwyn Bay U11's 14 Bay played two games against a strong Chester side who have been Cheshire champions previously. In the first, poor handling in difficult conditions made the first half tight but scrappy with both teams spilling lots of ball and neither dominating. Good driving from the Chester pack led to their only score, in the corner, before Bay replied just before the break with Remy Shiel going over strongly in the corner despite desperate Chester defence with support from Matthew Patricolo and Kurt Taylor-Williams. This was converted by Rory Russell to make the score 7-5 to Bay at half time. The second half saw good pressure throughout by Bay with man of the match Callum Teesdale, Lewis Shaw and Adam Smith dominating the pack and some direct positive running by Will Murphy, Gareth Mansfield and Luke Rawicki breaking the Chester defensive line. A good backs move led to Andrew Teece receiving the ball out on the wing and he ran 30 yards to score his first try for Bay, which was again converted by Rory Russell to secure the victory. Chester U11's 21 Colwyn Bay U11's 0 The second game saw Bay return scoreless for the first time in two seasons as they ran into a large, organised Chester team who were much bigger up front and distributed well. Bay forwards initially dominated driving over the ball regularly and securing reasonable ball for the backs, but progress generally looked laboured and in the tacky conditions they didn't really look like scoring. As the match progressed Chester gradually took control, scoring 2 converted tries before the break, despite good defensive tackles from man of the match Jacob Trotter, Connor Harding and pick of the forwards Jordan Edwards. In the second half, Bay were camped in their own half but to their credit continued to defend really well with a number of try saving tackles from Glen Davies, Scott Kane, Adam Stroud and Luke Rawicki and forwards, Jack Morris, David Edwards, Nicholas Ingham did their utmost to regain control of the breakdown. A further try at the end for Chester was probably deserved just for their persistence.
Sunday 17th February '08 Colwyn Bay 7 Caernarfon 28 Bay were able to play virtually two separate teams in this double encounter with Caernarfon. The first game was a good guide for newer players coming into the squad, playing alongside more established players. Bay were outplayed for much of the match by a strong opposition who moved the ball quickly to their backs but who had forward domination as well and it was a tough game for the home side. Poor Bay tackling helped Caernarfon attack effectively and they found themselves 28-0 early into the second half after tries from Adam Thomas (3) and Ynys Harris. Bay's Gareth Mansfield on the wing, Jack Morris, Kurt Taylor-Williams and Lewis Shaw in the pack tried to stage a fightback, and towards the end of the game Bay started to find their attacking feet, with man of the match Harri Parkes running good lines and breaking tackles. Bay deservedly got a try at the end from Rory Russell, which he converted, but the result was a fair one and reflected the oppositions dominance and Bays poor defence. Colwyn Bay 7 Caernarfon 5 In the second game Bay used their most experienced team and the match was a great contest with Caernarfon dominating the early exchanges and going into an early lead through a Daffydd Williams try. Bay then found parity up front against bulkier Caernarfon forwards, by tenaciously driving over any loose ball and getting to the breakdown quicker than the visitors, with man of the match Jordan Edwards picking and driving well, closely supported by David Edwards, Nicholas Ingham, Glen Davies and Adam Smith, and this allowed Bays backs to charge the Caernarfon line. Bay exerted almost continual pressure from then on but Caernarfon defended brilliantly and manage to repel numerous attacks on their tryline. Scott Kane distributed well to backs Connah Harding, Matty Humphreys, Jacob Trotter and Luke Rawicki and eventually it was one of these passes to Adam Stroud who was able to charge over through three tackles for a score in the corner which he then converted for the lead. Although Caernarfon counter attacked well in the closing minutes, Bay held out and looked the more likely to score again by the finish. A fine game played in good spirit. Sunday 10th February '08 COLWYN BAY 21 PWLLHELI 19 Colwyn Bay Under 11s won a hard fought victory against a well organised Under 11s team from Pwllheli who are one of the top teams in North Wales. Pwllheli came to Brookfield Road and stormed into a 12 nil lead with eight minutes with two great team tries from Gethin Jones and Euan Owen. The Bay started a fight back with a try from Fly Half Connah Harding and then a full length of the field score from Centre Adam Stroud who converted both tries. The Bay forwards Matt Patricola, Callum Teasdale, Kurt Taylor Williams, Jordan Edwards, Glen Davies, Nicholas Ingham, Adam Smith, and David Edwards fought for every ball at the line out, scrum and in the loose against a formidable Pwllheli side. With Hooker Jack Morris striking great ball in the scrum and Connah "the Hitman" Harding tackling everything that moved, by half time it was 14:12 in a very tight match. In the second half the Bay backs opened up with a quick ball from Remy Shiel playing at Scrum Half to Luke Rawicki in the Centre to score a superb converted try. Pwllheli came back into the game immediately with some great forward play in the loose and scored a further try from their winger Andrew Teeser to make the score 21:19 with five minutes to go. Pwllheli could have won the game however two fantastic try saving tackles at the end of the match by Wing Scott Kane which saved the day for the Bay, who won 21:19 in what was the tightest game of the season. Men of the Match: Glen Davies Second Row and Scott Kane Wing.
Sunday 27th January '08 Nant Conwy U11's 56 Colwyn Bay U11's 14 Bay came up against a well organised and strong Nant Conwy side who in the first half used the wide pitch to their advantage to run good lines and utilise the space to cause Bay all sorts of problems. Bay struggled to get out of their own half and despite fine tackling, from Adam Smith, Lewis Shaw and Connah Harding, Nant were able to score 6 converted tries without reply to take a commanding lead into half time. Bay regrouped for the second half and played much better, with the forwards including Glen Davies, David Edwards and man of the match Jordan Edwards driving forward powerfully and recycling the ball well to gain ground. Scrum half Scott Kane fed the backs well, who then started to cause the Nant defence problems. Nicholas Ingham broke through for a try followed quickly by an interception try for Adam Stroud, who converted both scores. Bay were the more impressive team in the second period, and Nant were restricted to two break away tries but thoroughly deserving of their victory.
Newtown U11's 28 Colwyn
Bay U11's 14
Again Bay were slow to pick up the pace of the match in the first half and Newtowns pack took an early hold on the game. Dogged defence by Bay, particularly from captain, Kurt Taylor-Williams, Freya Simonds and Will Murphy restricted Newtown to two late converted tries to go into the break 14-0 up. In the second period Newtown continued well and managed to get two further tries to take the game out of Bays reach. However, never ones to let their heads drop, Bay responded well and dominated the last 15 minutes with Jack Morris and Matthew Patricola leading the forward charge and Rory Russell and Gareth Mansfield making telling breaks which ultimately led to a score for Remy Shiel, bursting through several Newtown tackles. Fine runs from Connah Harding and Adam Stroud nearly broke through a good Newtown defence, before Luke Rawicki managed to run in from 20 yards out for an impressive try. Both scores were converted again by Adam Stroud. Nicholas Ingham was named man of the match for Bay for his fine tackling and harrying of the Newtown pack.

Lyndon School 30 Colwyn Bay
45
Having hardly played for many weeks, Colwyn Bay U11's were pleased for the chance to play Lyndon School to shake off the cobwebs in what turned out to be a great game of rugby. Bay got off to a flying start with early scores for Adam Stroud and Connah Harding (2) before Bay regular, Matty Humphreys, playing for his school, pulled one back. Bay then took complete control for the rest of the half, with forwards Nicholas Ingham, Lewis Shaw, and Adam Smith repeatedly driving over to keep possession to pass out to the Bay backs. Before half time Bay managed to cross the line 4 more times with tries from Jacob Trotter, Scott Kane, Adam Stroud and Glen Davies, with Sam Kellett getting one of his three tries for Lyndon to make the score 35-10 at the break. The second half was much more evenly contested with Lyndon playing exceptionally well and taking the game to Bay. They deservedly scored two more tries through Sam Kellett and Matty Humphreys before Remy Shiel and Adam Stroud powered in for Bay to maintain the gap. Freya Simonds was unlucky to have her try disallowed in the corner for Bay, but then they had to defend doggedly for the last 10 minutes as Lyndon piled forward. Great defence by Jack Morris, Callum Teesdale, Matthew Patricola, Rory Russell, Gareth Mansfield, Kurt Taylor-Williams, David Edwards and Luke Rawichi stopped most attacks although Lyndon scored two late tries through Bay regular Jordan Edwards to make the final score 30-45 to Bay. Will Murphy also playing for his school against his normal teamates had a fine game as well.

Bay 7 Sunday 9th December
Colwyn Bay
60 Flint 5 Sunday 25th November Bala 47 Colwyn Bay 41
Bay were involved in an exciting end to
end match on Sunday between two very evenly matched teams. Bay got off
to a flying start going into a 22-7 lead, with tries from Scott Kane,
Nicholas Ingham, Adam Stroud and Matty Humphries before a strong
period of play from Bala before half time reduced the lead to 22-21.
Bala continued that momentum into the second half despite good defence
by Bay, putting in 3 quick tries to lead 40-22, but Bay, never ones to
let their heads drop, then fought back doggedly, running the game with
a combination of good forward pressure and fine movement from the
backs and tries from Matty Humphries (2) and Harri Parkes combined
with conversions from Parkes and Adam Stroud allowed Bay to lead 41-40
going into the final couple of minutes. A try in the last minute
though from Bala was enough to secure victory. Great play from Adam
Smith, Remy Shiel, Freya Simonds, in her first game, Glen Davies and
Jordan Edwards as well as Rory Russell and Rhys Thomas, who were asked
to play for Bala to make up the numbers. Nicholas Ingham was named man
of the match for his aggressive forward play and determined tackling.
Sunday 18th November Rhyl 20 Colwyn Bay 65
Bay got back to winning ways this weekend
with a convincing victory over Rhyl. Bay were asked to supply 4 players
to bolster the Rhyl team and all four, Adam Smith, Callum Teesdale, Will
Murphy and Gareth Mansfield played exceptionally well against what would
normally be their teamates. Bay got off to a flying start going into a
25-0 lead very quickly with tries from Rory Russell, Jacob Trotter, Adam
Stroud and Matty Humphries (2) before things evened out with Rhyl
dominating the end of the half and deservedly scoring 4 tries of their
own to make it very close at the break. After a half time pep talk,
concentration was regained and Bay totally dominated the second period
scoring 8 tries without reply through Adam Stroud (3), Matty Humphreys
(2), Jacob Trotter (2) and Connah Harding, with scintillating running
from all the backs and aggressive mauling by the forwards, with Lewis
Shaw, Jordan Edwards and David Edwards standing out. Adam Stroud was
named man of the match by the Rhyl coach for his first half tackling in
particular.

LLANGEFNI 15 COLWYN
BAY 70 Sunday 21st October '07 Colwyn Bay U11's played two games away against a good Stockport side and played well in both games, despite having to quickly master new rules and having to combat some very strange refereeing decisions which confused both players and supporters. In the first game Bay dominated most of the forward possession, driving over well and securing good ball as a result. Much of the game it remained scoreless and looked destined to stay that way until Jordan Edwards drove over in the corner for a good try that was initially disallowed but ultimately given ! Stockport rallied well and scored a try of their own at the death for the game to end in a 5-5 draw. Adam Smith was awarded man of the match for his effort and lineout play with Gareth Mansfield, Lewis Shaw and Rory Russell playing well. In the second game, Bay took an early lead through Jacob Trotter's strong run through tackles and initially dominated but two tries from Stockport brought them a 10-5 half time lead. In the second half Bays forwards, many of whom had played in the first game, tired, and Stockport took control of that crucial area and began driving Bay backwards. Three more tries game Stockport a deserved victory in a well fought and pretty even game despite the final score. Jordan Edwards was named man of the match with Matty Humphreys and Glen Davies both playing well. Sunday 14th October '07 Bay under 11's came up against strong opposition in Caernarfon but although losing both games acquitted themselves very well. In the first game, Caernarfon stormed into a 15-0 lead by being well organised and through poor early tackling by Bay. Rory Russell scored a fine try for bay at the end of the half. The home side stretched their lead early in the second half but Bay pretty much dominated the half, driving powerfully in the forwards and tackling better, all over the pitch. Persistent pressure from the forwards was rewarded with a great drive over try by man of the match Will Murphy to make the final score 20-10 to Caernarfon. Jordan Edwards in particular stood out for his dogged work in the front row. In the second match both sides fought hard for early dominance. Both sets of forwards gave there all and although Bay were able to make initial impact at the breakdown they found themselves losing out to great secondary driving from the home side which meant a lot of turnover ball. Caernarfon managed to get a 10-0 half time lead due to a couple of break away tries. Bay fought hard in the second period with some fine tackling but 3 quick tries from the home team gave them an unassailable lead. A 30 yard break from Adam Stroud led to Bay's only try and despite going close a number of times afterwards, the score remained 25-5. The score did not reflect the closeness of the match with forward power just edging it for Caernarfon. David Edwards was named man of the match for Bay with Adam Stroud, Matty Humphreys, Glen Davies and Jacob Trotter all standing out in a team where all players gave their all.
Sunday 30th September Colwyn Bay 77 Mold 42 Bay dominated for much of the game against a slightly under strength but still formidable Mold team, in a game of two very different halves. In the first half, Bay cruised to a 56-0 lead with both forward power and backs flair, missing the previous week, returning in droves. The forwards dominated the rucks and mauls and set up a great platform for the backs to show their speed and agility. Tries were scored by Remy Shiel (2), Matty Humphreys (2), Adam Stroud (2), Conner Harding and Luke Rawicki, The half showed all aspects of their game, with long runs from their own half, drive overs and much improved tackling to build up a huge lead. Adam Stroud converted all 8 tries. The second half allowed Bay to change their whole team round. Mold, to their credit, came back into the tie as the new Bay team found their feet. 5 fine converted tries by the visitors brought the score some respectability before Bay managed to get going again with tries from Adam Smith, Matty Humphreys, on again as an injury replacement and Jack Morris. All were converted by Rory Russell. Although Bay then dominated play, Mold scored again at the death in what was a fine match played in a great spirit. Jordan Edwards and Nicholas Ingham were named men of the match for their forward presence with Callum Teesdale, Glen Davies and Scott Kane providing good support.
Sunday 23rd September The long coach trip down to Newtown seemed to have an effect on Bay U11's as they failed to get going at all in either of their two games against a much improved Newtown team on Sunday. In the first game the home side went ahead through a converted try but Bay managed to pull back with a drive over try from Remy Shiel which was converted by Adam Stroud right at the end of the half. Newtown retook the lead in the second half before Connor Harding ran impressively down the wing to score in the corner to again level things. However good Newtown pressure at the end of the game proved too much and the home side won with a converted try in the last play. Final score 19-12 to Newtown The second game again saw Bay unable to play with their usual pace and flair with the home side going into a 26-0 lead through four tries (3 converted). Although Bay defended well with Jordan Edwards shining in the forwards, they struggled to make any headway in attack until Glen Davies managed to break free and score near the end. This was converted by newcomer Rory Russell. Gareth Mansfield was named player of the match for his tackling and passing. Final score 26-7 to Newtown Sunday 16th September Colwyn Bay U11's had a successful start to the new season with games against Nant Conwy and Llandudno. In their first game, despite being a try down to an early Llandudno score, Bay battled back well with great long range tries from Conner Harding and Adam Stroud, both going in at the corner, to win 10-5. The second game playing against Nant Conwy, Bay required another fight back, being 10-5 down at half time. Galvanised in the second half though, Bay then scored 5 unanswered tries through newcomer Jamie Moorhouse, Remy Shiel, after a great break from Will Murphy, Adam Smith and two from Conner Harding to end up winning 30-10. Playing Llandudno again in the third game, Bay yet again went behind after two fine tries from the visitors, but after Conner Harding levelled things with two tries of his own, Bay then dominated and deserved the win when David Edwards powered over from 5 yards out for a 15-10 victory. The final game against Nant proved to be a game too far with Nant scoring a quick interception try to lead 5-0. Despite Bay dominating possession and territory for virtually the remainder of the game they were unable to break Nant down despite good effort from the forwards especially Jordan Edwards, Nicholas Ingham and Matty Humphreys. Nant scored a last minute try to make the score 10-0.Despite some rustiness in the tackle area this all bodes well for the rest of the season for Bay. Conner Harding was named player of the day for his exceptional all round play.
