Pwllheli - Home |
|
Once again there was another excellent
turnout of players for Colwyn Bay U7s and
U8s as they played host to a small, but very
well organized and passionate team from
Pwllheli. The sunny morning, combined with
the superb pitch conditions at Brookfield
Drive were idyllic for playing good
expansive rugby.
In the
first match, Pwllheli proved far too strong
for Colwyn Bay to contend with, executing
good passing skills and displaying some
powerful evasive running. Dominating
procession and territory Pwllheli
accumulated 4 tries without response,
somewhat stunning the Colwyn Bay players
with their tenacity. In the second half
Colwyn Bay came out a little stronger with
their resilience and determination being
rewarded with two tries. The first from Ben
Devilleforte - a well executed set piece
move paying dividends. The second from
Jennifer Elliott – who’s strong running was
a feature throughout the match, the try
endorsing a truly exceptional performance.
Despite their best efforts, Colwyn Bay were
unable to contain Pwllheli who ran in
several more tries putting the contest
beyond the reach of Colwyn Bay. Special
mention must be made to Robert Brown whose
excellent contribution in both attack and
defence
bolstered the Colwyn Bays performance.
Robert who was narrowly denied several
scoring opportunities also accumulated the
most tags during the encounter. Today’s
result was a fair reflection of the game in
general, however it must be acknowledged
that our team was made up of predominantly
U7’s and relatively inexperienced U8’s, we
therefore cannot get despondent with the
result. The enjoyment of all those who
competed is of paramount importance and
despite the result the resounding response
was extremely positive. Well done guys
fantastic effort under extremely difficult
circumstances.
The
second match proved to be a much tighter
affair with both teams giving 100% effort
and commitment. In this tense encounter,
Colwyn Bay maintained a lot of territory and
put Pwllheli under pressure from the
outset. Both teams exhibited some tenacious
tagging contributing to “forced” handling
errors resulting in frequent turnover ball.
Harri Glyn Jones scored Colwyn Bay’s only
try of the half, making the scores level at
the break. His now customary close support
play again achieving the desired result. In
the second half, Colwyn Bay fabricated
several chances to break through an
organised defensive
unit but were denied by some very determined
/ physical Pwllheli players. In
defence Colwyn Bay were
equitable to their task preventing several
try scoring opportunities with a tenacious
display of tagging and exerted pressure
preventing Pwllheli from breaking away. In
attack Teddy Roberts scored twice - the
first coming from an excellent display of
co-ordinated teamwork / precise passing to
close support, the second a strong run from
the halfway line. As time eluded, neither
team was able to fully dominate proceedings
and the score remained level at the final
whistle. Special mention must be to Sam
Trethouen-Haycox and Greg Hopkins for their
determination in defence
achieving a commendable tag tally from
particularly elusive opponents - 5 and 4
respectively. This was a well contested
match and all participants should be proud
of their contributions. Assured positive
results will soon be the reward for repeated
displays of this nature, please maintain
this impetus throughout the remaining
games. |

Llangefni
Away |
|
A cold but
bright sunny morning in Llangefni,
complimented by a warm hospitable welcome
set the scene nicely for two combined under
7s/8s matches, both of which turned out to
be exciting and closely matched encounters.
In the first match both teams
made uncustomary handling errors that can
only be attributed to the greasy surface
conditions that took a little time to adapt
to. Whilst frustrating for the players this
made for entertaining rugby for the
spectators. End to end action kept the
score line tight with both teams trading
tries, neither being able to
capitalise
on procession or territorial advantage.
Colwyn Bay demonstrated some good displays
of strong running, accurate passing and
close support play which resulted in tries
from Cian Elias, Teddy Roberts and Harri
Glyn Jones during the first period. It must
be acknowledged that the tries were
developed from extended periods of good
procession utilised wisely by all members of
the team. Tagging was also particularly
well executed by the squad with Sam
Trethouen-Haycox (6) and Aaron Newman (4)
dominating proceedings. Colwyn Bay made a
pedestrian / nervous start to the second
half and allowed Llangefni to score a couple
of tries in quick succession which
undermined confidence during the early
exchanges. However displaying a resolute
attitude and maturity beyond their tender
age the team slowly but surely settled down
to perform simple / uncomplicated rugby by
recycling quality ball that ultimately
resulted in another three tries for Cian
Elias, Teddy Roberts and Harri Glyn Jones.
The turnaround ultimately salvaged the match
for Colwyn Bay with the scores level at the
final whistle. Colwyn Bay at times
exhibited phases of rugby that were truly
magnificent, however it is essential to
remain focused throughout the entire game.
Brief moments of complacency whilst
dominating play can be quickly exploited by
discerning opposition turning potential
victories into battles for survival. A
valuable experience from which lessons will
be learnt. The team must however be
commended for never giving up during arduous
exchanges a quality that has been evident
throughout this season.
The second game began with
unforced handling errors, stray passing and
a little indiscipline creeping into Colwyn
Bay’s usually well drilled and
organised
team.
When in possession territory was gained,
however frequent turnover ball resulted in
it being quickly conceded which in turn
compounded the situation with individuals
becoming fatigued and frustrated.
Fortunately Llangefni failed to exploit the
situation and at the interval Colwyn Bay had
done enough to take a slender lead, with
tries being scored by Teddy Roberts, Cian
Elias and Aaron Newman.
Colwyn Bay
made another slow start after the break and
to their dismay allowed Llangefni back into
the game with a couple of swift tries. Once
again, Colwyn Bay demonstrated stout
resolution and developed some strong running
and good, accurate passing skills which
culminated in three more tries from Sam
Trethouen-Haycox, Harri Glyn Jones and Cian
Elias. This appeared to have again rescued
the match for Colwyn Bay with the score all
square, however during the last play of the
game Llangefni were able to snatch a match
wining try. The margin between positive and
negative results is often extremely close.
Focus, concentration and attentiveness are
the keys to success during exchanges of this
nature. These are skills that we often
display in abundance, however today we were
not as responsive and did not display or
perform to our true potential. It is
essential that we concentrate on the
positive performances and aspects of our
game and thus irradiate any avertable
tendencies. |

Denbigh Away |
|
A truly warm welcome and
excellent hospitality was received at Graig
Road the home of Denbigh Rugby Club despite
the inclement cold and damp morning. The
fixture produced two extremely competitive
games that that personified the attacking
flare of both teams, the results being both
equitable in terms of effort and commitment
which in turn created two particularly close
games. In the first of the encounters,
Colwyn Bay were just denied victory,
eventually out scored in an exceedingly
open and creative display of rugby, with
little emphasis on defensive stability.
This “gay abandon” allowed Denbigh to
eventually capitalise following an inspired
substitution early in the second half. If
our
defence
had been as strong and structured as our
determined, positive attacking play, the
final score would undoubtedly have gone the
Bay’s way. The two outstanding performances
for Colwyn Bay during the game were those of
Kevin Farrell and Cian Elias - a fantastic
first half hat trick showcasing Kevin’s
individual running talents combined with his
ability to integrate within the team. His
best try being set up nicely from a passage
of play that involved dynamic running,
passing and support form Gage Wilson-Noon
and Cerys Cuddhy. Cian achieved 6 tags
during the match and scored two tries either
side of the half time break providing some
memorable stealth evasive running. The ever
present Harri Glyn Jones made another dash
across the try line to increase to further
increase his impressive tally for the
season. Special mention must be made to Ben
Devilleforte who produced arguably his best
display of the season so far, showing some
good forward running and a much more
determined attitude - undoubting inspired
and confident from a run of good
performances . Colwyn Bay can be proud of
today’s exploits particularly their
attacking flare, however more emphasis will
be place on
defensive
stability to create a formidable unit. A
truly commendable effort. Well done all!!
The second game was again a
close fought battle. Colwyn Bay were slow
to get started and soon found themselves
trailing behind a well-drilled Denbigh
squad. However, once they got into their
stride, Colwyn Bay displayed some great
skill with the ball and tries followed - two
from Finan Close, one from Harri Glyn
Jones. An impressive, winding run to the
try line from Greg Hopkins gave Colwyn Bay a
slender lead at half time. During the
second period Denbigh applied concerted
pressure in an effort to move the ball
forward but Colwyn Bay held out with good,
determined tagging - a total of 22 tags were
taken in the match, with one set of six
providing a turnover to Colwyn Bay just as
Denbigh looked likely to score. A Fantastic
team effort saw each member contribute to
the
defensive
onslaught with inspired communication and
tactical awareness used to nullify Denbigh’s
main threat. Continued pressure in attack
led to further tries Aaron Newman and Cian
Elias the benefactors’ from extended periods
of ball retention and territorial
advantage. The game ended with a slender,
but never the less deserved, victory for
Colwyn Bay. A very good overall performance
from Colwyn Bay which showcased some slick
passing moves combined with a rugged and
stout defence. Today’s success must be
directly contributed to the developed ethos
of hard work, determination and relentless
effort this should be replicated throughout
the remaining games. Admirable display!!

Llandudno Away |
|
Today’s matches saw a
welcomed return to action for the U7s and
U8s after an extended period of cancelled
fixtures and training due to adverse weather
conditions. As has now become customary the
unprecedented commitment and support enabled
two full sides with a compliment of
replacements to be fielded against our
hosts. The first game featured a side
predominantly made up of U7’s combined with
our youngest and less experienced U8’s.
Colwyn Bay’s lack of match play and training
was clearly evident from the start with very
slow, pedestrian and prosaic play. This was
soon exploited by a strong Llandudno team
who displayed great handling skills and
powerful running. The greasy underfoot
conditions compounded the situation creating
difficulties in
defence
with tags being at a premium, however to
their credit all team members demonstrated
great resolve sticking to the task despite
the arduous onslaught. Six tries were
conceded in the first half but unperturbed
Colwyn Bay remained spirited and were
eventually rewarded with a try of their own
- a fine individual sprint by Ffion Brook
which lifted the moral of her fellow players
and spectators alike. In the second half
Colwyn Bay produced a much improved
performance adopting a sharper, more
purposeful approach in all aspects of the
encounter. The effort and commitment
exerted was duly rewarded with three more
tries being added to their tally - Declan
Harding, Cian Ceiri and Ben Devilleforte
capitalising
on a period of protracted possession and
ball retention. Llandudno however proved
too strong for Colwyn Bay to contain and a
further seven tries were conceded. This
was a courageous display by the Colwyn Bay
“Young Guns” against a side that featured
older, experienced and seasoned
campaigners. A valiant / intrepid exerted
effort was displayed throughout the game for
which the team must be highly commended.
Encounters of this nature develop character,
build resolve and endorse the ethos of team
spirit. Despite the result there was an
abundance of positive attributes that must
not be overlooked. Keep focused, assured
and confident propitious results will follow
in good time.
The second match was an
enthralling encounter, with both sides
contributing in providing exhilarating
end-to-end action combined with highly
entertaining well executed / clinical rugby
from the start. Colwyn Bay were slightly
quicker out of the blocks and promptly
scored the first try - Teddy Roberts making
a swift evasive run to the line. Following
this, tries were traded by both teams,
Colwyn Bay scoring some well-worked
individual tries as well as several co-ordinated
team efforts - Aaron Newman (2), Harri Glyn
Jones and Gregory Hopkins all utilising a
training ground technique to exploit gaps in
the
defence
by running from deep pockets in the
attacking line complemented by close support
in and around the contact zone. With the
scores level at half time, the scene was set
for an extremely entertaining second
period. Both teams resumed play less
frenetic, composed and structured which
created some fantastic, if at times
ferocious, tagging. Colwyn Bay put the
opposition under tremendous pressure in both
defence
and attack. Special mention must be made of
Kevin Farrell whose display of tagging was
outstanding, the whole team contributed to
the concerted effort and without exception
all were rewarded with tags, duly disrupting
Llandudno’s assertive attacks. Colwyn Bay
kept toiling hard and scored three more
incredible tries - an individual meandering
run by Sam Michael , a neat break and dart
by Kevin Farrell and a well drilled team try
eventually touched down by Cian Elias
following a fine display of accurate
handling at pace. Colwyn Bay had edged into
the lead however in the last play of the
match Llandudno managed to cross the line to
equalise.
This was an illustrious match which
showcased some brilliant individual
performances combined with impressive team
work which can and will be developed. This
was an eminent performance that will prove
auspicious as we approach the final quarter
of the season. All of the players have
made great progress with the principle
technical aspects of Rugby; however the most
encouraging characteristic is their
enjoyment and enthusiasm to compete whoever
the opposition. Well done chaps a great
morning of rugby. |

Nant Conwy Away |
|
Colwyn Bay U7’s and U8’s
took the short trip up the valley to Nant
Conwy the cold and damp morning did not
perturb the now customary faithful throng to
play in their first away fixture for a few
weeks. Due to the unprecedented support,
once again there was another fantastic
turnout of players and supporters alike
which enabled two individual teams to
compete against the traditionally tenacious
and competitive Nant contingency.
In the first match,
Colwyn Bay got off to their now habitual
slow start which allowed Nant Conwy to race
into a commanding lead, treating the
spectators to some thrilling displays of
open rugby, sharp tagging and accurate
passing. A resilient and committed
defensive display
combined with an increased tag tally in
particular those taken by Harri Brook and
Harri Jackson allowed Colwyn Bay a brief
respite from the onslaught. With the
pressure rugby subdued
Colwyn Bay were able to capitalise
on a period of good procession and ball
retention which developed two swift tries
from Kevin Farrell to reduce the
deficit before the
break. The second half brought two inspired
performances from Ffion Brook and Sam
Michael who both produced an epic display of
passionate, forceful tagging combined with
scoring a brace of tries apiece to ensure
Nant Conwy did not further exploit their own
commanding performance. The Bay developed
much more intensity and team work as the
game progressed for which, despite conceding
a further 5 tries, they should be highly
commended. Nant Conwy to their credit
always provide a good competitive encounter,
however the Bays cataclysm to compete in the
early encounters compounded the situation.
Some valuable lessons have been learnt from
today’s performance that
will provide a catalyst for change and
developed improvements, which can only be
considered a positive experience.
The second match proved to be
a very hard fought affair in which Nant
Conwy, with their often impenetrable rock
solid
defence,
were just able to edge out a strong,
committed and hard working Colwyn Bay line
up. Despite having a good share of the
possession and maintaining territory, the
Bay were held back by some outstanding, and
at some times, fierce tagging by a well
disciplined Nant Conwy side. This tenacity
resulted in Colwyn Bay being turned over 3
times by virtue of the six tag count. Nant
capitalised
on this relentless pressure and scored 3
breakaway tries developed from good evasive
running and accurate passing. The second
half began with Colwyn Bay exhibiting good
forward running / precise passing whilst in
possession and applying pressure in equal
proportion whilst in defence. Several vital
and crucial tagging displays were performed
in particular by Aaron Newman, Sam
Trethouen-Haycox and Greg Hopkins. The
relentless pressure eventually paid
dividends with Greg Hopkins, and in quick
succession, Declan Harding running in tries
both from patient disciplined attacking
assaults. Nant Conwy responded positively
to this offensive onslaught, forcing errors
in the Bay’s defence that were duly
exploited resulting in a further two tries
being conceded. A late try from Harri Glyn
Jones a ritual meandering run from deep
inside his own half was some consolation for
a truly commendable performance from Colwyn
Bay. Today’s performance should be
considered as remarkable for its significant
improvements in terms of resolve,
persistence and determination under
difficult conditions. Nant Conwy are always
adversative today Colwyn Bays performance
addressed that balance with an equivalent
attitude and performance. A truly
praiseworthy display !!

Bethesda at
Home |
|
A return to action saw Colwyn
Bay welcome Bethesda to Brookfield Drive on
a crisp and cold December morning. It was
Colwyn Bay who
capitalised
on the good playing conditions to record a
brace of positive results against a much
small contingent from Bethesda, who were
also returning to action after a lengthy
break due to the inclement weather.
Seasonal commitments, illness and injuries
had depleted Bethesda’s squad so in order to
achieve a positive experience for all
involved several Colwyn Bay players
volunteered to play for Bethesda embracing
the opportunity to participate within their
friendly and enthusiastic team. Two
9-a-side matches were played and a string of
fine performances on both sides made for
great entertainment and good, close contest.
In the first match, Sam
Trethouen-Haycox, Finan Close, Jack Faulds,
Robert Brown and Cian Ceiri all volunteered
to pull on Bethesda shirts,
a gesture that endorses the
player’s attitude to fair play and
sportsmanship
- well done guys. These
individuals would provide the catalyst for a
determined Bethesda performance. Colwyn
Bay got off to a bright start and charged
into an early lead with Harri Glyn Jones
scoring two tries developed from exiting
accurate passing runs from Aaron Newman and
Kevin Farrell. Declan Harding increased the
Bay’s lead by some abrasive determination
that resulted in a well deserved try.
Unperturbed Bethesda came back into the game
with Finan Close making two excellent
surging evasive runs, crossing the try line
twice. Great tagging prevented Bethesda
from gaining any further momentum and Colwyn
Bay’s excellent supportive play saw Gregory
Hopkins make two tries either side of the
half time break. During the second half,
both teams displayed some strong running
combined with accurately executed passing
which kept the score board moving along -
Ffion Brook and Cerys Cuddhy scoring for the
Bay and Sam Trethouen-Haycox and Robert
Brown for Bethesda. Colwyn Bay maintained
their composure during the frantic exchanges
with their persistence finally paying
dividends with a positive result. All
players, on both teams, should be commended
for their relentless efforts and good solid
tagging - a total of 30 taken during the
match. A performance that must be
replicated throughout the season. An
astonishing display of commitment and
enthusiasm.
In the second match
demonstrating
true sportsmanship
Declan Harding, Aaron Newman, Ffion Brook,
Cerys Cuddhy and Cian Ceiri all volunteered
to play for Bethesda. A most entertaining
match ensued which was well received by the
spectators, parents and coaching staff
alike. Colwyn Bay started strongly, focused
and determined. The game developed an
exciting pace which culminated in Colwyn Bay
keeping ball in hand, passing well and
retaining possession. This commitment and
effort paid dividends for Gage Wilson-Noon
and Harri Glyn Jones who both went over
the try line following great offloads from
their team-mates. Robert Brown and Kevin
Farrell lengthened Colwyn Bay’s lead, both
making fantastic individual tries from long
runs starting deep inside their own half.
To their credit Bethesda didn’t concede and
some determined tagging combined with
continued pressure were rewarded with a
brace of tries before half time. In the
second half tireless tagging from Finan
Close, Gage Wilson-Noon and Gregory Hopkins
weakened Bethesda’s determination and
optimism in attack. Forced to defend for
long periods Bethesda’s resilience was
finally undermined which allowed Sam
Trethouen-Haycox to punch a hole through it
and score two tries in succession. By way
of some consolation Aaron Newman responded
well for Bethesda and used his strength,
resolve and fortitude to score a well worked
try. It was Colwyn Bay who emerged
victorious again at the final whistle having
produced a display of rugby that embraced
the style, courage and purpose that is
continually being developed within the
quad. The real winners today were everybody
that participated in the event. Another
great morning’s rugby, very well appreciated
by those who supported both teams. All
players should be proud of themselves for
the growing sense of team work, pride and
support that has been on display this
morning - well done to all of you. |

Rhyl at Home |
|
Yet another bright
autumnal morning, conducive to playing
rugby, Colwyn Bay U7s and U8s welcomed
Rhyl to Brookfield Drive
a game arranged at short notice to fulfill
an empty space in the fixture calendar. Once
again there was another fantastic turnout of
players and supporters alike. Spectators
were treated to 3 great matches, in which
all 25 of the Colwyn Bay players should be
immensely proud of the performances that
they gave on the day - well done to each and
every one of you.
In the first match two of
the U8s, Jack Faulds
and Ethan Hogan kindly volunteered to play
for Rhyl to even up their depleted numbers -
a gesture that endorses the player’s
attitude to fair play and sportsmanship.
Their performances
contributed to and enhanced the
entertainment in this closely fought
affair. In the first half both teams
displayed excellent tagging skills, with the
Bay reaching the magic 6 tag tally on no
less than 3 occasions, forcing turnovers – a
brilliant period of sustained relentless
pressure. Aaron Newman led the way during
this period taking a commendable 6 tags,
ably assisted by Harri Glyn - Jones and Cian
Elias who both made immense contributions to
this sound defensive display. An enormous
direct attacking push saw Cian Elias just
being denied a try inches from the line just
before the break. The half ended with the
no score to either side - unprecedented.
Following an inspired team talk, the Bay
came out fired up for the second half,
immediately exerting the pressure as well
as the pace /speed of play. This tactic
finally paid dividends with Harri Glyn-
Jones and Gregory Hopkins both being
rewarded with tries scored in quick
succession. Following a further period of
intense pressure Jennifer Elliot scored the
try of the match - a swift sprint right down
the wing from deep in her own half - a
fantastic individual effort. Once again
tagging proved to be the key to success with
Greg Hopkins and Gage Wilson Noon leading
the way during this period, both taking 3
tags each. A brilliant result for the Bay
- a total of 24 tags were taken during the
match which prevented any impetus from the
opponents. The sound defensive performance
provided the catalyst upon which incisive
attacking movements could be exploited.
This must be considered the best overall
performance so far this season. We must
seek t replicate this type of display
consistently. Astonishing effort from all
involved.
The second match saw a
completely “new” Colwyn Bay U8’s squad take
to the field, which proved to be another
exciting encounter. Both teams played some
magical tag rugby, with glimpses of
brilliance, flare and dogged determination.
Each side competed tenacious in this very
close encounter. Showing true
sportsmanship Aaron Newman, Cerys Cuddhy and
Greg Hopkins volunteered to represent the
opposition. Colwyn Bay
started strongly, focused and determined,
exhibiting some resolute tagging from the
first whistle. Pressure was continually
applied to Rhyl’s attacking line, preventing
any clean passing and running - Sam Michael,
Finan Close and Sam Trethouen-Haycox
claiming the majority of tags, with each
team member contributing by taking at least
one each. The Bay took the lead with a
well executed drill - a good pass from Ben
Devilleforte to Sam Trethouen-Haycox who
then made a powerful, elusive run to the
line from just inside the Rhyl half.
However Rhyl fought back with equal
determination forcing a couple of handling
errors which ultimately led to two quick
tries being conceded,
giving them the lead at the interval.
Colwyn Bay emerged for the second half
displaying a very positive attitude and
continued their tactics of closing down the
opposition with forceful defence
and when in procession displayed expansive
attacking rugby. During the effort to chase
the game the Bay were caught out on the
counter attack with our own Cerys Cuddhy and
Aaron Newman representing Rhyl, capitalising
by scoring several tries in quick
succession. The Bay responded well and were
rewarded with 2 tries of their own with Sam
Michael and Ethan Hogan seizing their
opportunities , which put the team back in
contention. With the clock ticking down,
Gregory Hopkins, playing for Rhyl, snatched
the game out of Colwyn Bay’s reach, scoring
a well executed try created by a superb
sidestep that transfixed the bewildered
defence rubber stamping
the victory for Rhyl. A total of 27 tags
were taken during the match by Colwyn Bay
(10 by Sam Trethouen-Haycox, 7 by Finan
Close) an outstanding effort, which in turn
led to a very entertaining spectacle enjoyed
by all.
This must be considered
a moral victory for Colwyn Bay as without
the contribution made by our own colleagues
Rhyl would have struggled to compete against
this disciplined steadfast and purposeful
performance.
In the third and final
game of the morning, the U7’s took to the
field and played against Rhyl’s U8’s squad
supplemented with several stalwarts from
Colwyn Bays U8’s. Rhyl’s strength and
experience showed from the start, producing
some good forward running and accurate
passing. Despite valiant tagging from Isaac
Lawrence, Robert Brown, Ffion Brook and
Kevin Farrell it was inevitable that Rhyl
would take a comfortable half-time lead. The
Bay were unlucky not to score themselves
during this period, however on both
occasions the final pass did not reach its
intended destination. It must be
acknowledged that these opportunities
developed from good team work, support and a
concerted effort to play the game in the
spirit intended. Inexperience and naivety
aside Colwyn Bay were unperturbed and stuck
to the task and despite conceding
further tries a spirited fight back was
launched. A new found vigor and positive
forward running earned Colwyn Bay 2
consolatory tries both scored by Kevin
Farrell , well supported by his colleagues.
The U7’s are demonstrating enthusiasm and
passion for the game beyond their tender
years, their reward must be competitive
games to showcase their talent. It was with
great gusto that they competed with older
and stronger contemporises
this must be highly commended despite the
result.
Congratulations to all
players for contributing to a great morning
of rugby and thanks to all those who
supported the teams. |

Mold - Home |
|
Another
great morning for playing rugby – cold,
bright and sunny with the pitches in
remarkable condition following the recent
inclement weather conditions.
Once again, Colwyn Bay
were very well represented by players and
supporters alike.
The
abundance of players available enabled the
section to field one under 7’s and two under
8’s teams against a very competitive Mold
contingency.
The U7’s
took to the field first and delivered a
fantastic performance which was reflected in
a close fought match with the final result
just marginally going against them. Colwyn
Bay, fielding several debutant players,
produced some fine team work, trading tries
with the opposition which kept the score
very tight during the first half . A
determined defensive performance saw tags
being taken by all team members and in
attack Louis Cotton scored both of the Bay’s
tries during the first period. The second
half saw the Bay continue in the same vein,
the team pushed forward with confidence and
resolve when attacking. In
defence
the same commitment was displayed with a
determined effort to close down the
opposition. There were some very creative
tries scored by Louis Cotton (3 in the half)
and Isaac Lawrence. Jack Faulds produced a
remarkable try; an individual effort with a
fantastic run from deep in his own half
delighted the spectators. Tagging was
consistently good with the Bay applying good
pressure and resilience, however despite
their endurance just missed out on victory
to an equally determined Mold team. An
inspired performance “true grit”. A
courageous effort please maintains this
impetus and energy.
In the
first of the U8s matches, Colwyn Bay were
exceptionally slow to get started with a
very competitive Mold team quick to
capitalise
on this lapse, displaying
some quick offloads and accurate passing
which resulted in several tries for the
eventual victors. The Bay attempted to
recover with Teddy Roberts and Aaron Newman
demonstrating some good tagging abilities.
The highlight of the first half was a fine
try for Ethan Hogan, created by some
inventive support play by his
colleagues. Colwyn Bay
improved dramatically immediately after the
interval, successfully containing Mold -
restricting them from any free running. Cian
Elias scored the Bay’s the only try of the
half following a good period of procession
and ball retention. Despite some noble
efforts, the Bay were unable to close the
gap on Mold, their early domination could
not be eroded. To steal a cliché
this was definitely a game of two halves,
with determination, commitment and
resilience the faux pas of the first period
was irradiated, however we must all remember
that game starts at the first whistle. A
gallant recovery from a potential
nightmare. Commendable effort
guys!!!
The second
of the U8’s matches also turned out to be a
hard fought affair with both teams showing
determined attitude towards winning the ball
and positive forward running. Colwyn Bay
held their own for the majority of the first
half and were rewarded for their performance
by two tries, both scored by Lewis Williams
created from great support and accurate
passing from his team mates. With scores
tied at the interval the second half was
eagerly anticipated, however the Bay lost
their way a little during the early
encounters and again Mold were quick to
capitalised
on this. During this period of intense
pressure the Bay did demonstrate some good
tagging skills, notably by Harri Glyn -
Jones, Jennifer Elliot and Gage Wilson
Noon. Colwyn Bay continued to compete and
in bursts of supportive forward play two
further tries were scores - the first a show
of strength and determination putting Declan
Harding over the try line and the second
another graceful solo run from Nina
Clemson. Time eluded Colwyn Bay just as
they seemed to have settled and took control
against a very well drilled Mold team. This
was another encouraging display, assured by
the many positive attributes demonstrated
throughout the performance.
The commitment from players, parents,
guardians and supporters has been
unprecedented so far this season, this is
always greatly appreciated. The environment
that has developed is conclusive to an
enjoyable experience for all those
involved. A big thank you to everybody!!!

Mold
Tournament |
|
Despite the
exceptionally early start, there was another
fantastic turnout from the players, parents
and supporters of the U7s and U8s at Mold
for their annual tournament.
In their first match, players
found the going a little difficult as the
artificial pitch created tricky conditions
under foot.
Nant
Conwy, who are always a strong side to play
against, started well however The Bay
managed to match them for intensity and good
passing. On several occasions good progress
was made towards the try line but possession
was either turned over just short or play
was disrupted before full advantage could be
taken. It must also be acknowledged that
during this period a try was also disallowed
with little or no coherent explanation.
Tags came few and far between with players
not adapting to the surface as quickly as
our opponents. Normally agile individuals
appeared uncomfortable with the slippery
underfoot conditions. During the second half
the team settled slightly better, play
improved and two tries were scored Aaron
Newman and Jennifer Elliot benefited from
some nicely set up opportunities that
developed from good team passing and
increased pressure. Credit must be given
to Cian Elias who achieved the highest tag
count during the match. A good effort from
all players who took to the field - even
though the final score didn’t go our way,
our determination ensured that Nant Conwy
realised
that they had been in a hard fought contest
and didn’t have it all their own way.
The second match was against
Ellesmere Port and once again, the team
struggled to adjust to running on the
artificial pitch. To their credit The Bay
kept applying pressure which resulted in
some bursts of great forward movement,
notably a superb run from Lewis Williams,
who practically covered the whole length of
the pitch, his effort delighted the
spectators who vocally expressed their
approval, the volume was quickly suppressed
when it was
realised
the try had been disallowed for an
infringement that would have normally
attracted the advantage to play on.
(Unlucky Lewis nearly the try of the
tournament). This spurred Bay on and,
despite being slightly outscored, all
players made some valuable contribution with
Teddy Roberts scoring the team’s solitary
try of the half. In the second half,
skillful pick-ups in the loose from new
players Harri and Ffion Brook allowed The
Bay to create chances which resulted in
another two tries for Teddy Roberts. At
the final whistle, despite out “Hat Trick
Hero” Ellesmere Port emerged the victors.
It must be acknowledged that this was a very
commendable effort - special mention to
Declan Harding and Cian Ceiri for some very
determined tagging.
In the third
match, Lymm demonstrated a quality
performance and proved to be very skillful
and competent team. The Bay although
determined and committed struggled to
compete particularly with closing down their
opponents and disrupting play. To their
credit the team stuck to the task and
constantly demonstrated pride and courage
during adversity. Although possession was
somewhat limited the team displayed some
terrific skill with the ball in hand and
good quality passing. A disallowed try and
turnovers close to the try line dampened the
Bay’s spirit somewhat; however the team
should take heart from some good core rugby
skills and displays of strong forward
running, notably from Cian Elias and Greg
Hopkins.
The fourth
match produced a very close run affair with
Bowden. The whole of the team were full of
enthusiasm and very motivated for this one.
In the first half, a try from Teddy Roberts
gave The Bay a deserved lead. The team in
general displayed some inspired running
complimented with determined defensive
tagging, notably by Ethan Hogan and Declan
Harding. A strong committed defensive unit
shut out Bowden until just before the half
time whistle. After the break, Bowden came
out stronger and The Bay had their work cut
out trying to close down their opponents.
There were strong tagging displays again
from the team particularly from Harri Brook,
Ffion Brook and Ethan Hogan. Declan Harding
seized the opportunity of a fine try that
developed from some determined, incisive
passing from Dylan Williams and Robert
Brown. Bowden were relentless and with the
bit between their teeth, kept pushing
forward and at the final whistle just edged
to victory.
Colwyn Bay
saved their best performance of the day
until the final game. The opponents a
smart, eager and competent looking team from
St Anselmains. Luck had not favored The Bay
during the tournament and this, coupled with
some small errors compounded by fatigue,
just denied the team from registering what
would have been a well deserved win in this
very close, hard fought affair. The
players were all very enthusiastic from the
kick off and some good straight forward
running from Sam Trethouen-Haycox, Cian
Elias and Gregory Hopkins, complimented with
great supportive play from Cerys Cuddhy and
Gage Wilson-Noon, set up first half tries
for Aaron Newman and Harri Glyn - Jones.
The second half carried on in the same vein
with The Bay being very persistent, applying
pressure continually on the opposition’s
attacking line, keeping them contained for
long periods in their own half. The team in
general demonstrated some great passing
skill as well as inspired offloads, and the
spectators responded well to this positive
play. A disallowed try for Greg Hopkins
spurred the team on and to his credit,
despite his obvious disappointment Greg
stuck to the task and was duly rewarded with
a try within a few minutes; a direct
determined run to the corner outwitted the
opponents on this occasion. Aaron Newman
scored Bay’s second of the half from short
range a determined burst from a precise pass
from Harri Jackson. At the final whistle a
single try separated the teams in this very
hard fought, close encounter - all players
should be commended for their efforts.
All in all
this tournament was a very positive
experience for all those involved.
Unfortunately we were unable to record any
victories, however there were some great
displays of positive rugby and, above all
else, some fantastic team work and
camaraderie. Days like today develop
character, bond individuals and develop an
overwhelming sense of belonging to a team,
this is as important as winning. Keep
working hard guys but remember the most
important part is to have fun and enjoy the
experience. You have all done yourselves
and Colwyn Bay proud!! |

Ruthin - Home |
|
The weather
was once again extremely kind to Colwyn Bay
U7’s and U8’s as they welcomed Ruthin to
Brookfield Drive. These age groups have
demonstrated strength in depth so far this
season and were able to field one U7’s and
two U8’s teams. It’s fantastic to see the
continued support and commitment.
The U7’s showed a lot of
enthusiasm in their game, matching Ruthin
try for try during the first half, an evenly
fought encounter. Although very few tags
were taken, Bay were able to apply enough
defensive pressure to disrupt proceedings.
The team’s first try was scored by Dylan
Williams, coming from a brilliant run from
the halfway line, evading the
defence
with a direct sprint down the wing. The
second try was finished off well by Robert
Brown who
capitalised
on a period of quality possession. In the
second half the team showed some great
supportive plays which paid dividends and
consequently were
rewarded by four more tries. Lewis Williams
displayed his all round talent, scoring
three tries and taking a crucial tag just
inches away from the line saving a certain
try. Robert Brown’s enthusiasm was
rewarded with his second of the match - a
fast run across the field to the far
corner. Ruthin were relentless in their
attacking play dominating possession for
protracted periods which subsequently
resulted in further tries. At the final
whistle the Bay fell just short of their
Ruthin adversaries but had displayed some
good phases of play that will develop
confidence and team spirit - keep it up
guys!!! .
In the U8’s first match,
Colwyn Bay took some time to settle which
resulted in the team losing a little
momentum culminating in several tries being
conceded
to a strong Ruthin side without response.
To their credit, there were
however some fantastic individual defensive
tagging efforts during the first half with
Harri Glyn Jones taking 3, Declan Harding
and Harri Jackson taking 2 each and Sam
Michael making 1.
A
solitary
try from Declan Harding gave
Colwyn Bay a boost towards the end of the
first period. The second half started more
positively with the team being a little
quicker to settle into formation and with
sheer determination and effort again
demonstrated some excellent defensive
tagging, preventing Ruthin from stretching
their lead. Each member of the team
contributed taking at least one tag apiece.
Special mention must go to Sam Michael who
claimed four tags and enthusiastically
supported Harri Glyn- Jones to assist him
scoring the only try of the second half.
The result may not have gone Bay’s way on
this occasion; however it must be
acknowledged that a lot of positive
attributes were displayed during the
encounter. These core skills and qualities
if nurtured will develop and flourish in
time. The players must be commended for
their effort. Hard work and determination
will get the desired results keep up the
momentum for next week. Fantastic
endeavor!!
The U8’s second match of the
morning showcased a fantastic range of rugby
skills from all who took to the field and
participated. From the first whistle, the
team played attacking, positive rugby and
this, coupled with a real sense of team
spirit and commitment, quickly led to tries
being scored. The Bay held their formation
superbly well and this resulted in an
excellent defensive performance. Special
mention must be made to Jennifer Elliot who,
as captain for the match, led by example
pressing forward on every conceivable
occasion putting Ruthin under constant
pressure. First half tries were scored by
Cian Elias (2), with Gregory Hopkins and Sam
Trethouen-Haycox taking one a piece. The
team’s positive attitude carried forward
into the second half resulting in relentless
pressure for the visitors in all phases of
the game. Determined, unremitting
supportive play throughout and good clean
passing resulted in more tries for the Bay -
Sam
Trethouen-Haycox,
Gregory Hopkins, Nina Clemson and Jennifer
Elliot all taking one each. There were
several individual performances of specific
note, namely Nina Clemson’s solo run down
the field, avoiding Ruthin’s
defence,
to score a great try, Lee Jones’ brilliant
tagging tally of 8 for the match and, as
previously mentioned Jennifer Elliot’s
commitment from the kick-off to close down
any forward movement from Ruthin. The
spectators were treated to some excellent,
enthusiastic rugby from a team that were
focused and determined. Best performance of
the season so far. Wholehearted and
fervent to be applauded. Excellent!! |

Llandudno Away |
|
Colwyn Bay U7’s and U8’s again turned out in
force on a bright, sunny morning to visit
the old adversaries in Llandudno and due to
our abundance were able to field two full
sides of mixed age groups to compete against
a smaller Llandudno contingency. Thanks to
Gregory Hopkins for volunteering to play for
Llandudno as they fell short of having a
full team compliment due to illness and
injury. Great sportsmanship!
In the first
match, Colwyn Bay struggled initially to
keep their formation on the field and both
teams traded tries in end to end action from
the kick off - first half tries were scored
by Aaron Newman (3) and Cian Elias. In the
second half Bay showed some good defensive
play, saving tries on the line and also some
good individual forward running by try
scorers Gage Wilson - Noon, Cian Elias and
Sam
Trethouen-Haycox
. Overall a very good effort displayed by
the Bay narrowly being outscored by a
persistent Llandudno attack.
In the second match, again Colwyn Bay took a
little while to settle into formation,
however to their credit demonstrated some
great tagging skills during the early
encounters which saved several try-scoring
runs by Llandudno and disrupted some
determined forward running. Good supportive
play helped Colwyn Bay to 6 tries, just one
less than a well disciplined Llandudno
team. Special mention must be made of Lee
Jones, Teddy Roberts and Harri Glyn - Jones
for some excellent try scoring and Dylan
Williams and Kevin Farrell for making some
brilliant tags.
Overall, the squad played well and
demonstrated how they are developing and
improving their rugby skills week on week.
Keep working hard guys! Well done to
everyone who participated in today’s
performance. Our sincere thanks must also
be extended to all parents and guardians of
the children within the squad; the support
during the first four weeks of the season
has been fantastic. Many Thanks!!

Colwyn Bay v Caernarfon |
|
Unperturbed by the early start combined with
the atrocious weather conditions to their
credit players, parents and supporters again
turned up in abundance to welcome Caernarfon
to Brookfield Drive.
The large squad allowed two full teams to be
fielded complete with a compliment of
replacements. Team one consisted of
veterans from last season’s campaign, with
team two being a combination of newly
recruited Under 8’s and our full complement
of Under 7’s.
Team One was lead by Cerys Cuddhy who’s
relentless determination was to inspire her
colleagues throughout the encounter. Colwyn
Bay got off to a particularly slow start and
struggled to retain possession during the
early encounters, this enabled Caernarfon to
capitalise scoring a well worked try early
in the half. A spirited performance slowly
started to develop confidence with Gregory
Hopkins, Aaron Newman and Jennifer Elliot
linking well, being denied on several
occasions due to tag counts, testimony to
the expansive rugby being deployed. Teddy
Robert’s enthusiasm was eventually rewarded
with a try following a strong sole direct
run from defence.
The second half followed a similar pattern
with Caernarfon dominating play and
possession. Colwyn Bay were reduced to all
out defence with Ben Devilleforte, Gage
Wilson-Noon, Nina Clemson and Declan Harding
all contributing tirelessly to the task. It
was inevitable that Caernarfon would score
again, however the team must be commended
for only allowing their line to be
penetrated on one occasion.
This was a good overall performance; in
particular credit must be given to the
team’s positive attitude throughout.
Team Two was lead by Harri Jackson whose
quiet determination and methodical approach
to the task would be instrumental to the
team’s performance and effort. Although
Caernarfon started the stronger Colwyn Bay
were focused demonstrating some good support
play and when permitted to utilise the ball
showed confidence in possession.
Caernarfon however got an early try
following a protracted period of pressure.
Colwyn Bay kept their composure with Finnan
Close finding himself in the right place to
open the account for the Bay with a well
worked evasive agile run to the line. Some
excellent pressure and sound defensive
tagging could not deny Caernarfon from
increasing their try count with two being
conceded in quick succession early in the
second half.
Tactics deployed on the day allowed each
member of the Colwyn Bay team to take the
game to Caernarfon with efforts by Lewis
Williams and Cian Ceiri being the most
memorable. Harri Glyn-Jones was eventually
rewarded for his determination throughout
the game with a burst of acceleration that
took him to the line for a late consolation
try.
Although outscored the efforts of all
involved in particularly poor conditions
must be highly commended. Genuine
enthusiasm is a fantastic attribute which
will pay dividends throughout the season.
Great effort guys!!!! |

Colwyn Bay v Llangefni |
|
The wet start to the day did not dampen the
spirits of the Colwyn Bay faithful who
turned up in force for the first game of the
season against Llangefni. Due to our
excellent support we were able to field two
full teams combined of both age groups and
in addition supplement the depleted
Llangefni team.
In true sportsmanship Sam Michael and Ben
Devilleforte volunteered to represent
Llangefni a gesture that must be highly
commended, these individuals would provide
the catalyst for the visitors in the first
match, with Sam’s strong attacking runs
complemented by Ben’s determination in
defence.
The first half saw Llangefni domineering
possession capitalising on the naivety of a
relatively inexperienced Colwyn Bay team,
which subsequently resulted in several tries
being scored without reply. It must be
acknowledged that during this period that
our own Sam Michael scored a brace following
some exciting evasive running. Colwyn Bay
stuck to their task and were rewarded late
in the first half with well worked try that
saw a quick break by Harri Jackson followed
by an incisive pass to Gage Wilson-Noon in
space who completed a meandering dart to the
line. Llangefni responded with some
expansive rugby in the second half which
again paid dividends for the visitors
resulting in additional tries being scored
without response, Llangefni’s dominance did
however allow Sam Michael to complete his
hatrick of tries, a great individual
achievement.
The whole team must be commended for their
efforts and determination throughout the
match, core skills and attributes that will
prove to be valuable as the season
progresses.
The second
game saw a change of personnel with Sam
Michael and Ben Devilleforte returning to
the fold with
Louie Cotton
and Ethan Hogan kindly volunteering to
represent Llangefni, a gesture that endorses
the player’s attitude to fair play and
sportsmanship. Colwyn Bay soon addressed
the balance between the two sides and
quickly established a firm grip on the
match, with a succession of attacking rugby
complimented with some solid defensive
tagging. Declan Harding broke the deadlock
with a superb individual try breaking
through the defence running home from the
half way line.
Llangefni responded commendably but were
denied any success by a committed defensive
unit. The second half was to follow a
similar pattern with Colwyn Bay capitalising
on their possession with a superb try by
Nina Clemson made possible by a great set up
directly from the re-start by Ben
Devilleforte. Confidence soon started to
develop which directly resulted in a pair of
tries by Teddy Roberts both from long range
direct attacking runs. A solid defensive
performance with all the team contributing
towards the tag count prevented Llangefni
from making much progress with the little
possession that they were given, however, to
their credit they stuck to the task and were
rewarded with a late consolation try.
Colwyn Bay’s performance in both games will
provide a sound foundation upon which skills
and tactics can be developed; every
individual has contributed to making this
and enjoyable start to the season.
There is so much to be taken from today’s
performance. Well done all!! |
