Colwyn Bay U8s 9 Denbigh
U7/8s 8
A large squad of enthusiastic
Colwyn Bay players welcomed Denbigh on a fine spring morning. Three
U7 Colwyn Bay players showed great maturity by swapping shirts for
the occasion and helped Denbigh to boost their squad. Colwyn Bay
put in a determined performance to just come out ahead in this
tightly contested match. Denbigh scored the first try, but then the
pattern for the whole match was for one team to score a try or two
and nudge ahead before the other team came back. Colwyn Bay’s
attacking play was good with the team working together well for
their tries, but there were times when their defensive play let them
down and they let Denbigh get some easy tries. Sam Saunders
deserves particular mention for a very strong game, scoring 4 Colwyn
Bay tries in the second half.
Thanks to all the U8 parents,
siblings, grandparents and friends for their continuing support – it
is much appreciated!

Colwyn Bay U8s 4 – Rydal Prep
U8s 4
This was a closely fought match,
with four Colwyn Bay players switching teams for the day to play for
their school. The match started defensively, with five minutes of
very tight play and excellent tagging from both sides before Rydal
went ahead. Colwyn Bay were not going to give up easily, and kept
pushing forward to draw level, from which point each team took it in
turns to score tries . It was engaging rugby to watch and great to
see both sides had improved since their previous match in early
February. The tight tagging forced both teams to make longer passes
and move the ball to the wings to find the space. Adam Knowles had
a very strong game and scored three of the four tries for Colwyn
Bay. Three of the Rydal tries also came from three players who
usually play for Colwyn Bay.

Ruthin 4 – Colwyn Bay 4
In what turned out to be a
surprisingly short game, Colwyn Bay started with the same fast tempo
from last week’s game. Adam Knowles opened the scoring from the
first move of the game with a typical mazy run. Amy Bale followed
with a powerful run through the middle of the Ruthin defence to
score the 2nd try. The 2nd half saw Adam
Lee-Browne open the scoring from the start with great run to split
the defence. Adam completed the scoring with his second try of the
game. A good team performance led by captain James Green and
excellent tagging from Henry Noad and Alexander Hopkins. Colwyn Bay
deserved more from the game but unfortunately a number of key
decisions didn’t go in their favour.
Mold 9 – Colwyn Bay 7
Colwyn Bay were put under
immediate pressure from a well drilled Mold team. Colwyn Bay’s
defence was kept busy with some excellent running and passing from
Mold. Adam Knowles capitalised on a Mold mistake running the length
of the touch line to score Colwyn Bay’s first try. Colwyn Bay were
finding it difficult to break the Mold defence when it was noticed
Mold had been playing with an extra player on the pitch. An extra
player was brought on for Colwyn Bay and from that point the game
balanced out. Thomas Opie finished some great support play with a
try in the corner. Matthew Millband scored an excellent solo try
bursting through the centre of the Mold defence. Colwyn Bay
continued to test the Mold defence, some great support saw Amy
finish off the 1st half with a try. The 2nd
half started at a frantic pace with Mold able to take the advantage.
Colwyn Bay applied more pressure leading to a try by Adam Knowles.
Good pressure and passing was rewarded with 2 further tries for Adam
Lee-Browne.

Colwyn Bay U8s 9 - Bro
Ffestiniog U8s 4
On a bright, sunny morning,
Colwyn Bay U8s welcomed Bro Ffestiniog and proceeded to put on a
convincing display of tag rugby. For once, the home side got off to
a quick start, with great individual tries from Amy Bale and Will
Stewart. Bro put in two rapid attacks on the right wing,
culminating in a try but thereafter the Bay dominated the rest of
the half. Adam Lee-Browne worked at an amazing pace in defence,
chasing every tag and there were strong runs resulting in tries from
Matthew Millband, Sam Saunders and Amy Bale to take the score to
5-1.
In the second half Bro got an
early try, but Amy Bale soon responded with two more tries for
Colwyn Bay. Bro put the home side under more pressure than they had
in the first half. Despite some good tagging from Colwyn Bay,
particularly from Adam Lee-Browne again, Bro scored three times.
Alexander Hopkins found some space and pushed the Bay forward,
passing accurately to Morgan Thomas in support to score. The final
try for Colwyn Bay came when Adam Lee-Browne switched from defence
to attack. A great team performance – well done!

Llandudno 7 Colwyn Bay 6
Colwyn Bay visited Llandudno in
what turned out to be a closely contested match. The first half was
end-to-end rugby with both sides producing some fine tagging to
prevent the opposition scoring.
Adam Knowles eventually broke
through the defence to score the first try after a surging run from
Thomas Opie. Amy Bale came on as a second half substitute to make an
immediate impact by scoring a wonderful solo try. The game opened up
providing a more free scoring game. Matthew Millband scored a try
following some great support play. Thomas Opie ran in 2 tries with
Adam Knowles also adding to his tally.
This was a good display by
Colwyn Bay, who are growing in confidence every week. Particular
mention should go to James Green, Morgan Thomas and Will Stewart
for their strong defence in holding back Llandudno. Man of the match
goes to Adam Knowles, who tirelessly covered the defensive line and
was a constant attacking threat.
Llandudno 8 Colwyn Bay 6
The second match continued to be
an even contest, with both teams holding their line of defence.
Matthew Millband opened the scoring with a unstoppable run through
the centre of the field, covering three-quarters of the field.
Morgan Thomas scored three tries, with the pick of them being a
wonderful side-step to open the defence. Will Stewart and Adam
Knowles finished the scoring with a try a piece.
Colwyn Bay held on well with a
committed defence, notably Amy Bale, Adam Knowles, Matthew Millband,
James Green and Will Stewart. Man of the match must go to Morgan
Thomas who attacked with confidence and speed, always looking a
threat when he had the ball. Llandudno came out the victors of this
match as the Colwyn Bay legs tired towards the final minute but
great spirit was shown by both teams.

Nant Conwy 8 Colwyn Bay 5
Colwyn Bay U8s got off to a
typical slow start and came under immediate pressure from a
strong Nant Conwy team. Colwyn Bay were 5-1 down at half time with
Adam Knowles scoring the only try in the first half. The second half
saw a great improvement from Colwyn Bay with stand out performances
from Adam Knowles and Adam Lee Brown, both scoring 2 tries a piece.
Special mention to Trystan Jones and Sam Saunders for contributing
to a good team performance.

Rydal Prep U8s 10 – Colwyn
Bay U8s 8
This was an entertaining and
very sporting display of tag rugby, played on a lovely, sunny
morning at Rydal. There was good support for both sides and seven
of the Colwyn Bay regulars played for their school.
Rydal put Colwyn Bay under
immediate pressure, although the Colwyn Bay players dug deep and
forced a turnover ball. Two of the established Colwyn Bay players
Amy Bale and Will Stewart contributed to the four Rydal scores in
the first half. Adam Knowles used his pace to outrun the Rydal
defence and Matthew Millband put in a strong, straight run to get
the tries to keep Colwyn Bay in the game.
Colwyn Bay opened the scoring in
the second half with a lovely, defence splitting try from Thomas
Opie to start a spirited fight back. However the one person they
consistently failed to stop was their Colwyn Bay teammate Will
Stewart who brought his try total for Rydal up to four. In turn,
the Rydal defence struggled to stop Adam Knowles, who stepped up the
pace and swerved and sidestepped his way to a further three tries,
and Matthew Millband, who with determination and strength crossed
the try line two more times.
None of these tries would have
been possible without some great passing and support play from all
the Colwyn Bay players. Jamie Rogerson and Sam Saunders put in
confident performances and there was some good tagging and continued
improvement from some of Colwyn Bay’s newer players, James Green,
Aron Gavins, Alexander Hopkins and Gregory Hopkins. A fantastic
match, enjoyed by players and spectators alike!

Colwyn Bay U8s 4 – Caernarfon
U8s 8
Both teams showed considerable
character and commitment on a bitterly cold day, with muddy ground
conditions, hail and snow. Caernarfon emerged the stronger side,
but Colwyn Bay U8s continued to improve and put in a good team
performance.
There was good possession from
the home side, despite persistent tagging from Caernarfon who had to
work hard to turnover the ball on a few occasions during the match.
Caernafon managed to run in four tries to the two scored by Colwyn
Bay in each half. Will Stewart scored the first try for Colwyn Bay
with a strong run forward. The second try came from Amy Bale who
showed excellent support play following Adam Knowles’ long run
forward through most of the Caernarfon defence. Only the muddy
ground conditions denied Henry Noad from scoring after his attacking
run. The weather conditions deteriorated in the second half but
both sides continued to work hard. Second half tries came from
Matthew Millband and Adam Knowles.

Colwyn Bay U8s 4 - Glyn
Ceiriog U8s 8
The U8s were keen to play a
match after two months of disruption due to the weather. Colwyn Bay
put in a great team performance which was not reflected by the final
score. Glyn Ceiriog scored 5 tries in the first half despite some
good tagging from Colwyn Bay, especially from Adam Knowles. Colwyn
Bay kept pushing forward and demonstrated some good support play.
Eventually this paid off, with Adam Lee-Browne showing strength and
determination to run in two tries.
Colwyn Bay continued to work
hard in the second half but could never quite get back the advantage
Glyn Ceiriog had gained in the first half. Will Stewart was
rewarded with a try for his powerful run through the centre of the
Glyn Ceiriog defence. Adam Knowles used his trademark agility to
score Colwyn Bay’s final try.

Colwyn Bay
U8s 6 – Llandudno U8s
11 (LOSS)
Colwyn Bay were in the fortunate
position of being able to field 2 teams with all players getting a
full game. Colwyn Bay were put under immediate pressure from
Llandudno and found themselves behind very quickly. The first half
was dominated by Llandudno as Colwyn Bay struggled to retain
possession, managing a single try scored by Thomas Opie. Colwyn Bay
started off the scoring with a try by Amy Bale and this reenergised
the team. Adam Lee-Brown went over for his first try in his first
game of rugby. Matthew Millband continued his excellent start to the
season with a try. Thomas Opie added to his first half try to finish
with 2 tries. Morgan Thomas scored an excellent try running from one
side of the pitch to the other finishing in the corner. The second
half was a more even game but the damage to Colwyn Bay had already
been done in the first half. The star of the game goes to Adam
Lee-Brown starting his first game, scoring a try and producing the
highest tag count.
Colwyn Bay U8s
6 – Llandudno U8s
7 (LOSS)
Colwyn Bay fielded a different
team for this game and immediately tried to put Llandudno under
pressure. Will Stewart completed a powerful run to open the scoring.
Adam Knowles was a constant threat to Llandudno showing impressive
turns of direction. As captain today he produced a performance for
the team to follow, running in 4 tries and leading the tag count.
Alexander Hopkins scored his first try for the team, improving with
every game. Special mention to Henry Noad and Callum Garty starting
their first games and gaining valuable experience. Llandudno
snatched the win with the game coming to the close. Star of the week
goes to Adam Knowles with an excellent all-round performance.

Colwyn Bay U8s
3 – Flint U8s
2 (WIN)
Colwyn Bay welcomed Flint for
their first fixture of the season. Although this was Flint’s first
game they provided some excellent defence. Colwyn Bay found it very
difficult to break through for their tries. Will Stewart was first
to score following some excellent support play to find their way
through the Flint defence. Morgan Thomas led the line in defence
with the highest tag count and showed some determined running.
Matthew Millband continued his excellent start to the season with 2
tries, the pick of which coming from a surging run by Amy Bale with
Matthew in support. Colwyn Bay demonstrated a mature approach to
their game unpicking the Flint defence with their much improved
support play. Well played Colwyn Bay.

Mold Tournament
Colwyn Bay attended Mold Mini
Rugby festival. This was their first tournament and provided all
that attended great experience playing 5 games during the day.
Tournament captain was Amy Bale.
Colwyn Bay
U8s 5 – Ellesmere Port
U8s 7 (LOST)
Colwyn Bay started the
tournament against Ellesmere Port. Everyone seemed apprehensive with
it being the first game allowing Ellesmere Port to get the first
try. It became a game for the fast nimble players as Ellesmere Port
found it difficult to deal with Adam Knowles who ran in 4 tries. Amy
Bale scored with a strong determined run along the touch line.
Unfortunately, Ellesmere Port also had some fast powerful runners
and ended up coming out on top at the end of the game.
Colwyn Bay U8s
5 – Ruthin U8s
2 (WIN)
Having played Ruthin the
previous week at home Colwyn Bay were well aware of the strengths in
their team. Adam Knowles was given the duty of marking Ruthin’s main
threat and put in a tremendous defensive role keeping them very
quiet. Emily Rogers had a real spark to her in game in this match
and ran in 2 tries. Thomas Opie seemed to cover every inch of the
field tormenting the Ruthin defence. His excellent display was
rewarded with 3 tries. Colwyn Bay built on their performance from
previous match to earn their first win of the tournament.
Colwyn Bay U8s
5 – Helsby U8s
4 (WIN)
Colwyn Bay continued in the same
way they approached the Ruthin game putting Helsby under immediate
pressure. Thomas Opie flying high with confidence continued to
impress, constantly looking to break through the Helsby defence.
Thomas’ charge amounted to 3 tries, followed by tries from Matthew
Millband and Adam Knowles. Helsby came back to add some tension to
the final few minutes. Special mention to Will Stewart and James
Green, for leading the tag scoring; without their try saving tagging
the score could have favoured Helsby.
Colwyn Bay U8s
5 –Denbigh U8s
5 (DRAW)
The game against Denbigh earlier
in the season was a closely fought contest and this proved similar.
Every try scored was immediately matched by Denbigh. Adam Knowles
pulled off the performance of the tournament scoring 3 tries and 10
tags, a phenomenal work rate. Matthew Millband and Thomas Opie also
scored a try a piece. Jamie Rogerson saved 2 try scoring
opportunities keeping Colwyn Bay in the game. This draw prevented
Colwyn Bay and Denbigh going through to contest as winners of their
pool.
Colwyn Bay U8s
5 – Stoke U8s
8 (LOST)
Colwyn Bay’s final game was against Stoke, who were
eager for a win to challenge as pool winners. Colwyn Bay matched the
scoring at the early stages with Emily Rogers and Adam Knowles
scoring tries. An excellent individual performance from one of the
Stoke players saw them extend their lead and take the game away from
Colwyn Bay. Never to be beaten, Amy Bale led the defensive line
amassing the highest tag tally and then finishing off an excellent
performance with a strong run the length of the pitch to score the
final try. Special mention to Gage Wilson-Noon from the under7s, who
provided some excellent tagging throughout the tournament and gained
some valuable experience.

Colwyn Bay
U8s 7 – Ruthin U8s
7 (DRAW)
Colwyn Bay entered this match
with a lot more determination than their last game. It proved to be
a very balanced game from both teams with some excellent support
play. Colwyn Bay finished at half time 4-3 up with 2 good individual
tries from Adam Knowles and a try each from Will Stewart and Sam
Saunders. The second half saw Colwyn Bay under more pressure from
Ruthin. Adam Knowles continued to find the space well and ran in 2
more tries. Matthew Millband completed some great support play and
well earned his try. Ruthin managed to score in the last play of the
game to snatch a draw. Man of the match goes to Adam Knowles for not
only scoring 4 tries but also taking 6 tags. It was a great team
effort from all involved.

Colwyn Bay U8s 1
– Nant Conwy U8s 5 (LOST)
1ST GAME
Colwyn Bay
welcomed Nant Conwy for the first home game of the season. From
the whistle Nant Conwy put Colwyn Bay on the back forward with
some wonderful direct rugby. Nant Conwy continued to put
pressure on the Colwyn Bay defence running in some excellent
tries. Colwyn Bay were finding it very difficult to break
through the Nant Conwy defence. Adam Knowles managed to get
through scoring a breakaway try, once through there was no
catching him. Man of the match goes to Adam Knowles for
providing a constant threat and determined defence.
Colwyn Bay U8s 0
– Nant Conwy U8s 6
(LOST) 2ND GAME
The second
game of the day for Colwyn Bay U8s was a very one sided affair.
Nant Conwy continued the relentless pressure, causing Colwyn Bay
to lose possession in attack. Man of the match goes to Kain
Lawrence playing his first game of rugby, taking 5 tags. Special
mention should go to Matthew Millband who tried to ensure the
team didn’t drop their heads. Today was a case of Nant Conwy
turning up ready to play rugby and putting in a very good
performance. Colwyn Bay on the other hand were caught
daydreaming.

Denbigh U8's 5 - Colwyn
Bay U8's 5
On a beautiful Sunday morning
the U8s got off to their first game away to Denbigh. Colwyn Bay
showed great teamwork with some lovely support play. Colwyn Bay
dominated the first half with tries from Adam Knowles, Will Stewart
and Thomas Opie. All players performed well in defence with a very
high tag count. Due to slow re-joining to play in the second half
Denbigh were able to close the gap. A solid team performance, well
done everyone.
