Under 9's Match Reports 2008/9
|
9th May '09 |
|
The last fixture of the season was greeted
with excitement by all the squad. At a time when many young service
personnel are paying the ultimate sacrifice the Welly tournament serves as
an important reminder of their courage.
The Bay were first on against the hosts
Llandudno. These teams have met several times over the season with the Bay
shading proceedings. The team started well with excellent off-loading and
support play. On a small pitch tackling was vital. This was well
demonstrated by Seb Marshall, Tom Cuddihy, William Opie and Peter Jones. The
Bay scored several well worked tries to run out victors. Connor Hogan did
some excellent driving work in the tight.
Colwyn Bay 4-Llandudno 1
Try scorers Ivor Fetherstonhaugh[1],Tomos
Cuddihy[1],Ruby Roberts[1],Connor Hogan[1].
Next up were Caernarfon. The Bay conceded from
kick off conceding a try to a large Caernarfon forward who they did not
tackle. The team bounced back with some good defensive work. The forwards in
particular Sion Edwards, Ruby Roberts, Seb Marshall and Tomos Cuddihy worked
tirelessly. Caernarfon were a strong tackling unit and the Bay were unable
to break them down.
Colwyn Bay 0-Caernarfon 2
The last pool game was against an improving
Bethesda team. The Bay have beaten them on two previous occasions this
season. The Bay were unable to dominate despite much of the possession. An
early try by Peter Jones was the only score for the team. Bethesda came back
with a well worked try and the Bay were made to work hard for a draw. This
result was enough for the Bay to qualify for the semi -final.
Colwyn Bay 1-Bethesda 1
Try scorer Peter Jones.
The semi-final was held against Nant Conwy.
The Bay had beaten Nant earlier in the season but the team knew they would
have to be at their best to get to the final. Nant are an excellent passing
team and the team had to work extremely hard in defence. Despite this Nant
pulled clear. It was only in the last five minutes that the players
recaptured their form, Peter Jones scoring twice following good work from
the forwards. Unfortunately the Bay were beaten by the clock.
Colwyn Bay 2-Nant Conwy 4
Try scorer Peter Jones[2].
The whole squad should be proud of their
achievements on the day and are all players of the day. They were Sion
Edwards, Connor Hogan, Ruby Roberts, Tomos Cuddihy, Seb Marshall, Mark
Sweeney, Sam Holt, William Opie, Peter Jones, Sam Earl, Ivor Fetherstonhaugh,
Oliver Thomas, Harry Edwards, Alex Harpum, Joe Kilpatrick.

Colwyn Bay under 9s' against Rhyl (A)
The Bay team looked forward to their last away game of the
normal season. The short trip to Rhyl was made in typical April weather. The
game started with some excellent defence by both teams. Ruby Roberts, Tomos
Cuddihy and Mark Sweeney made some telling tackles. This was backed up by
some good driving work by Sophie Wagner, Sion Edwards and Oliver Thomas.
Rhyl had some large players who were unable to break through the Bay line.
As legs tired Peter Jones used his speed to score and Sam
Earl scored a cracking length of the pitch try sprinting down the wing. Rhyl
scored two of their own before player of the match Ruby Roberts scored the
clincher.
Colwyn Bay 4-Rhyl 2
Try scorers Ruby Roberts[1],Sam Earl [1] and Peter Jones[2].
A second game was held against a tiring Rhyl team. The Bay
continued to dominate the contact and started off-loading the ball to allow
the backs to enjoy some possession. William Opie, Carwyn Knights and Sam
Holt contributed to an all round team effort. Joe Kilpatrick played well in
the tight. The Bay spent much of the game camped in the Rhyl half and ran
out deserved winners.
Colwyn Bay 5-Rhyl 2
Try scorers Ruby Roberts[2],Peter Jones[3].
Player of the day goes to Ruby Roberts.

Anglo-Welsh Tournament at Wrexham-26/4/2009
Colwyn Bay under 9s' enjoyed a fantastic days'
rugby at the Anglo-Welsh tournament in Wrexham. This was an opportunity to
test skills against larger squads from across the border.
First up were Stoke. This was always going to
be a test for the Bay but they began well with committed tackling from
William Opie from the start. This was backed up by good work up front by Seb
Marshall, Sion Edwards and Ruby Roberts. Both sides exchanged scores before
weak defence out wide allowed Stoke to dominate and run out winners.
Colwyn Bay 2-Stoke 8.Try scorers
Carwyn Knights[1] and Ruby Roberts[1].
Next up was a local derby against old foes
Llandudno. The Bay dominated possession with some good work involving Tom
Cuddihy, Sophie Wagner and Connor Hogan. Two breakaways tries drew the
scores even and despite constant pressure the Bay could not score the
winner.
Colwyn Bay 2-Llandudno 2.Try scorer
Tom Cuddihy[2].
The Bay faced familiar opposition in Mold.
A try early on involving several phases was well scored by William Opie.
Unfortunately the Bay did not back this up with committed tackling and
allowed Mold to run clear to win.

Opie.
The final pool game was against Bethesda. The
Bay dominated the game to run out comfortable winners. Sion Edwards and Seb
Marshall led the forwards while William Opie and Tom Cuddihy controlled

A small squad of available players travelled
to Llangefni on a warm spring day. They were met by an improved Llangefni
team. On a tricky pitch underfoot William Opie and Sion Edwards began with
some good tackling. This was well supported by committed running by Tomos
Cuddihy and Sam Holt. Up front Seb Marshall ,Ruby Roberts and Connor Hogan
competed for the hard yards with several extended mauls. Seb Marshall used
his size to crash over the try line. Llangefni responded with some fine
counter-attacks of their own. The team kept their shape and it was pleasing
to see some fine passing and off-loading. This led to several fine phases of
play. The team showed much improved defensive skills which allowed them to
run out deserved winners.
Colwyn Bay 6-Llangefni 4.
Try scorers Seb Marshall[3],Sam Holt[2] and
Tomos Cuddihy[1].Man of the match William Opie.
A second game allowed new players Mark Sweeney
and Joe Kilpatrick to compete. Despite the heat the team remained committed
and continued to hunt as a group rather than individuals. This allowed the
ball to be moved swiftly through the hands. In a close encounter both sides
exchanged scores but the Bay reminded in charge throughout to secure the
victory.
Colwyn Bay 6-Llangefni 5.
Try scores William Opie[1],Sam Holt[1],Ruby
Roberts[2],Tomos Cuddihy[1] and Seb Marshall[1].

Colwyn Bay Under 9s-Home to Pwllheli
On a beautiful spring morning the squad were hoping to change
a recent run of near misses. They were met by a physically larger team from
Pwllheli. This advantage immediately told as the Bay hunted in one's and
two's instead of as a team. Pwllheli ran through some weak defence in the
first half. Tomos Cuddihy, Seb Marshall and Sion Edwards competed well in
the tight. There was some good running by Carwyn Knights, Sam Holt and Sam
Earl. There was a debut for Mark for the team, he looks a promising player
with good game sense. The second half performance improved but the Bay could
not claw back from their slow start.
Pwllheli 8-Colwyn Bay 0
The second game saw the late arrival of three regular players
to the team. This allowed the Bay to compete far better. The whole squad
played as a team. Ruby Roberts and Connor Hogan stepped up their work rate
in the rucks and mauls. This resulted in Peter Jones and Sam Earl making
some good breaks with excellent tackling from Ivor Featherstonehaugh and
Sion Edwards. The team were marshalled by William Opie and Sam Holt leading
the attacks. In a close run encounter the Bay just ran out of steam towards
the end.
Pwllheli 5-Colwyn Bay 2
Try scorers Ruby Roberts, Peter Jones .Man of the match Seb
Marshall.

The team travelled to Ruthin on a warm, spring
day to play a much larger squad! Ruthin were well drilled and the Bay defended
well with Sion Edwards and Seb Marshall driving the ball forward. Peter Jones
intercepted a Ruthin pass to score the first try of the match. Ruthin then
defended and attacked well returning to score. The Bay were passing and tackling
well as a team. Ivor Fetherstone-Haugh ran the ball wide down the touch line
to gain valuable ground and Sam Earl, playing his first match for the Club,
helped the Bay gain valuable ground too at crucial times in the match. Ruthin
outpaced the Bay in the second half to run out deserved winners.
Score : Ruthin 6
Colwyn Bay 2 (Tries : Peter Jones)
In the second match, the Bay defended well but Ruthin outplayed them
especially after being tackled. Despite this the Bay never gave up when faced
with defeat. The second half of the match saw two Bay players getting injuries -
Seb Marshall was assisted off the pitch with a knee injury and minutes later
Sion Edwards came off with a rib injury. Ruthin loaned us a player (Jamie) and
the team rallied together with Ruby Roberts attacking for the ball and Sam Holt,
Sam Earl, Sophie Wagner and Tomos Cuddihy tackling and supporting well. This
allowed Jamie to score two tries for the Bay in quick succession.
Score : Ruthin 6
Colwyn Bay 2 (Tries : Jamie from Ruthin)
Man of the Match : Sam Earl - inspired tackling and good, solid play
throughout both matches

Colwyn Bay Under 9s away to Caernarfon/Stratford
Colwyn Bay took part in a three way fixture
against Caernarfon and a touring team Stratford [Upon-Avon].
First up were Caernarfon and the Bay made a
traditional slow start. Seb Marshall and Ruby Roberts made some driving
breaks with the ball being spread well to Sam Holt, William Opie and Peter
Jones. Caernarfon made some good breaks to keep the Bay pinned back. On a
firm pitch pace out wide was the key. A lack of committed tackling meant
Caernarfon ran out winners.
Colwyn Bay 2-Caernarfon 5 -Try
scorers Ruby Roberts[1],Peter Jones[1].
Stratford were on tour, the parents all
travelling as Cowboys and Indians! They had a large squad of twenty plus
players so the Bay played them in two games. The first game was a big
improvement with the Bay playing as a team and off-loading well in contact.
Carwyn Knights and Connor Hogan made good yardage. Harry Edwards and Ivor
Featherstonhaugh became involved out wide. The whole team contributed to a
thrilling game which ended as a cracking draw. The star of the show being
Peter Jones for some excellent running and committed defence.
Colwyn Bay 5-Stratford 5 -
Try scorer Peter Jones[5].
By the time Bay took part in the last game the
small travelling squad had run out of energy. Some poor tackling allowed
Strafford to run away with the game. Mention to Peter Jones, Ruby Roberts,
Connor Hogan and Seb Marshall for remaining committed in the tackle.
Colwyn Bay 0-Stratford 7.
Man of the match Peter Jones.

The Under 9s travelled to Denbigh in spring like conditions. It was a
complete change from last week's drenching. Denbigh are a well drilled
outfit and provided a stern test. They demonstrated the art of recycling
the ball and created several phases of possession. The Bay tackled well,
led by Ruby Roberts, Sion Edwards and Ivor Featherstonhaugh. After a
slow start the Bay fought back with some good work in the loose by Tomos
Cuddihy and William Opie. Unfortunately the Bay could not convert
pressure into points. The team began to wilt in the heat and in the face
of some dubious refereeing decisions.
Denbigh ran out winners 5-0 Colwyn Bay..
A second game was held which allowed all the squad to participate.
Sophie Wagner,Harry Edwards and Sam Holt continued to offer resistance
to a rampant Denbigh team. Seb Marshall and Alex Harpum battled well in
the heat before Denbigh ran out deserved winners.
Denbigh 7-1 Colwyn Bay. Try scorer Sion Edwards. Man of the match Ivor
Featherstonhaugh

An away fixture against Nant Conwy is never easy. In freezing
conditions with heavy rain it was a battle in the mud. Colwyn Bay started
well and recycled possession in early exchanges without being able to score.
Nant replied with some good handling and free running to score some early
tries. Good tackling by Peter Jones, Ruby Roberts and Tom Cuddihy meant that
the Bay went in 4-0 down at half-time.
In the second half the squad dug deep and began to dominate
in the tight. Excellent driving by Seb Marshall, Sion Edwards and Carwyn
Knights meant that the Bay were able to control possession. The pressure
eventually told with the Bay scoring after great work in the tight. This was
followed by further good work by Connor Hogan and Sophie Wagner. Sam Holt,
Harry Edwards and Oliver Thomas marshalled the back line. The Bay scored
further tries with some excellent running by Peter Jones. The team showed
great character to eventually run out winners. Well done to all those
players who contributed to an excellent result in atrocious conditions.

The Bay travelled to Bethesda for the first
time to take part in a St David's Day triple crown fixture against Bethesda
and Llandudno. First up were the hosts' Bethesda. Fielding a strong team the
Bay made a confident start but were pegged back by good tackling from
Bethesda. This was equalled by some driving tackles by Seb Marshall and Sion
Edwards for Colwyn Bay. Some good support play by Carwyn Knights, Ruby
Roberts and Sophie Wagner led to tries for the Bay. Bethesda did not give in
easily scoring breakaway tries of their own down the wings. In a fiercely
contested game the Bay were made to scrap for every inch of territory before
running out winners.
Colwyn Bay 5-Bethesda 3,Try scorers Carwyn
Knights[1],Ivor Featherstonhaugh[1] and Peter Jones[3].
Next up were Llandudno who the Bay know well.
This contest is always keenly contested. Tomos Cuddihy and Connor Hogan made
some telling breaks in this game and were again supported well by Harry
Edwards, Oliver Thomas and Sam Holt. Both teams exchanged scores with some
excellent tackling and driving work by Sion Edwards and Seb Marshall.
Llandudno tired under this pressure and the Bay dominated possession. Once
again the Bay could not pull away as a result of breakaway tries by
Llandudno. Bay's determination eventually saw them run out deserved victors.
A fine running display by Peter Jones. Well done to all the squad.
Colwyn Bay 7-Llandudno 5,Try scorers Sion
Edwards[1],Peter Jones[5] and Connor Hogan[1].
Man of the match Sion Edwards.

Despite missing some key players the squad
made the early start for Stockport on Sunday morning. The team lined up
against their English opposition in the knowledge that they would be facing
a far larger squad of players. Stockport immediately demonstrated some
powerful tackling and excellent technique. This meant that the Bay found it
hard to generate any meaningful possession. Sion Edwards and Seb Marshall
had some fine runs but the Bay were guilty of not supporting the player with
the ball. Oliver Thomas worked tirelessly in the loose. The Bay tired in the
face of such committed tackling and Stockport ran out comfortable winners.
Stockport 8-Colwyn Bay 0.
The Bay began the second game with a try down
the line by Sion Edwards. This was followed by Harry Edwards' first try for
the Bay at Under 9 level. To their immense credit the Bay worked much better
as a team and began to recycle the ball. Stockport did break back to score.
Seb Marshall crashed over early in the second half to score for the Bay.
This was just reward for his hard work in the tight. The whole team
continued to fight for every inch of territory and had the bumps and bruises
to prove it. In the end the Bay were unlucky to come second in a well fought
contest.
Stockport 5-Colwyn Bay 3
Man on the match Harry Edwards.

A depleted team travelled to Llandudno in a
hastily arranged fixture. Basking in balming temperatures both sides made a
committed start. Excellent tackling on a small pitch led to several
turnovers. Sophie Wagner and Seb Marshall put in some good work in the
tight, while Peter Jones and Sion Edwards tackled well. Half time came and
went with scores even. Both sides made the best of heavy conditions and a
break away try at the end brought Llandudno level.
Final score 3-3.Try scorers Sophie Wagner
[1],Seb Marshall [2].
A second game saw Colwyn Bay's strength in
driving mauls and rucks pay dividends. Their superior fitness paid off as
the team ran in tries and camped in Llandudno's half. Carwyn Knights, Connor
Hogan, William Opie, Oliver Thomas and Harry Edwards joined in the action as
the Bay ran out comfortable winners.

This local derby is always closely fought and
today was no different. Despite freezing conditions and a sodden pitch the
Bay arrived with a full squad. Once again the Bay were slow starters with
players understandably concentrating on keeping warm ahead of playing rugby!
Llandudno adapted quicker before the Bay livened up in the second half. Try
scorers for the Bay were Sion Edwards, Ivor Featherstonehaugh and
Peter Jones. Llandudno ran out 6-3 winners.
By the second game the Bay were fired up for
action. Alex Harpum made a committed return to the team. He was well
supported by Seb Marshall who was making his full debut in the side. The Bay
dominated with some excellent defensive work from Oliver Thomas and Sion
Edwards. Try scorers for the Bay were Peter Jones[3],Connor Hogan[1],Seb
Marshall[1] and Ivor Featherstonhaugh[1].The Bay finished as convincing
winners 6-0.Man of the match goes to Seb Marshall for scoring on début.

conditions, role on the spring!

The Bay welcomed Flint on a crisp morning.
Conditions were extremely wet underfoot with the ground churning to mud.
Flint had some physically large players who the Bay quickly learnt to bring
down by tackling low. Despite the conditions the Bay played some excellent
free-flowing rugby from the outset with phase after phase of possession. It
was particularly pleasing to see the players turning the hours of practice
into some excellent driving mauls. The relentless pressure exerted
turned eventually into tries. Sion Edwards and Olly Thomas tackled well
throughout the game. Ivor Featherstonehaugh showed some excellent footwork
going forward and he was assisted by Sam Holt and Peter Jones. The squad was
joined by a new player, Seb, who had a promising début. The squad worked
extremely hard for each other and gained revenge by beating Flint 6-2.Man of
the match goes to Sam Holt for committed driving and running.
A second game against a tiring Flint team was
held with the Bay able to use their full squad. Harry Edwards ran well and
Sophie Wagner worked well in the tight. Mention to William Opie for turning
out to play following a bout of winter flu. It was also pleasing to see Ruby
Roberts supporting from the touchline with her arm in a bandage, we wish her
a swift recovery. The Bay continued where they left off in the first game
with an excellent 5-2 win. Well done to all the squad.

The Bay returned to action following a months
long lay off due to the weather. This quickly became evident in the first of
two games against Denbigh at home. The Bay had not faced Denbigh in previous
age groups and were quickly on the back-foot. The first half was dominated
by Denbigh who made the most of poor defence from the Bay. It wasn't until
the second half that the Bay woke up and began tackling and defending as a
team .By this point the game was lost with Denbigh running out easy winners
9-0.
The second game was a vast improvement with
the Bay playing as a unit and tackling well. Tomos Cuddihy
off-loaded superbly in contact and this was backed up by some committed
driving by Sion Edwards and Connor Hogan. It was a fast flowing game with
both teams exchanging tries, Carwyn Knights having some excellent runs out
wide. It was the straight driving of Connor Hogan and elusive running of
Peter Jones which meant the Bay ran out winners 6-5.This was the best team
effort of the season, well done to all players. Man of the match going to
Carwyn Knights for some game breaking runs.

Only the most committed team members turned
out for this pre-Christmas fixture away to Mold. Once again they were faced
with freezing conditions and a wet pitch. Mold were still smarting from
their away loss to the Bay and were out for revenge. The game began with
committed driving in the ruck and maul by Mold. The Bay were on the back
foot from the outset. Committed tackling from Oliver Thomas, Peter Jones and
Ruby Roberts held Mold out .However it was only a matter of time before Mold
broke through to score 2 tries in each half. There was some spirited attack
by Samuel Holt and Sion Edwards however to often they were left isolated and
the ball was subsequently turned over. Mold eventually ran out deserved
victors 4-0.Man of the match went to Oliver Thomas for his defensive effort.
A second game allowed Bay to show some off
their skills in the lose with Peter Roberts[3 tries] and Carwyn Knights
scoring after some flowing passing moves. old continued their forward
dominated game scoring several tries from good driving mauls. This despite
some valiant counter-mauls led by Ruby Roberts and Connor Hogan. Both teams
contributed to a thrilling encounter, final score Mold 7-Colwyn Bay 4.

did not prevent Colwyn Bay from showing their new found tackling and mauling
skills. It was a committed game from the outset, with tries being swapped by
each side. Ivor Featherstonehaugh and Oliver Thomas put in some great
tackles, this was backed up by tries from Sion Edwards (1), Peter Jones (2)
and Ivor Featherstonehaugh (1) . The Bay eventually ran out winners 4-3.
A second game continued where the first had
left off. The Bay forwards reaping the benefits of driving low in the maul.

Wagner led to a free flowing game. All the team contributed to a great
effort. Mold began to flag in the face of sustained pressure. The Bay ran

A good turn out from the
squad, who were rewarded with a cracking game against opponents from down
the coast, Rhyl. From the outset both teams showed excellent mauling and
battled for each blade of glass. Rhyl had a large pack but great defence
from Sion Edwards, Sophie Wagner, Connor Hogan and Ruby Roberts held them
out for long periods. The Bay countered with some fine breaks by Carwyn
Knights and Peter Jones. Good support running from Samuel Holt and William
Opie allowed the game to flow. The teams swapped tries before Rhyl took the
lead into the second half. The long mauls were energy sapping for both
sides. Peter Jones broke away to score and the game finished as a thrilling
draw 2-2.

the squad to join in and both teams continued as they had left off. The
players were feeling the pace but the heavy conditions failed to dampen any

Sophie Wagner for their committed tackling. To their credit the team worked
tirelessly for each other and their enthusiasm never faltered throughout the
