CBRFC Women's XV v
Bala (A)
Bala 7’s 25 Colwyn Bay 7’s
17
On a sunny Sunday afternoon the
Colwyn Bay Women’s team ventured down to Bala for a friendly game of
7’s. They kicked off at 1 o’clock and played 4 sets of 10 minutes.
The two teams were fairly well matched with Bala having slightly
more youth on their side. The first try was scored very quickly,
this was achieved by Hannah Roberts for the Bay, it went unconverted
due to the requested “drop goal” style necessary for a conversion in
7’s. Amy Evans was making her début as Scrum Half for the Women, a
role that she is establishing as her own, and was able to move the
ball between forward and back play well. The three man front row,
Sue Jennings, Sands Jones and Hannah Roberts, made a formidable
opposition with them having a clear advantage when driving the
scrum; this was especially strong from the Loose Head position (Sue
Jennings). Sands Jones as Hooker, was, as always often found in the
thick of the tackling action, and made sound use of the ball when in
possession, with one particular occasion seeing her with a run that
nearly made the try line. Jess Rhodes as Centre, who had been
making her presence in the backs known by swift passing and sound
running, was injured during a tackle and had to leave the pitch.
There was scoring from the Bala side, and then a powerful run from
the Full Back, Mari Arthur, saw her even the score sheet with the
second try for the Bay. This went unconverted, despite a valiant
attempt, as the drop goal scoring seemed to be eluding both sides.
Bala managed to venture ahead with another try, their lead was
prevented from extending further but some massive tackling from
winger Rachel Owen, who was intent on proving that size isn’t
everything. After a very decisive kick and chase Hannah Roberts
once again found the try line and scored, this time Ellen Jones, who
had been making her presence felt throughout the match, found the
kick she had been looking for and converted the try. Ellen was also
made “Man of the Match” by Bala for her constant efforts throughout
the game. Bala once again found the try line before the final
whistle, securing their win. The match was thoroughly enjoyed by
both teams and will hopefully be the first of many. Thanks must go
to Nia Davies for the organisation at the Bala end.
