2012 Kick-off 6.45 |
|
Rhyl Youth 10 Colwyn Bay Youth 23 |
|
The Bay ended
their league campaign with a hard fought
victory away against Rhyl to consolidate
their mid table position. The win was over
shadowed by the head injury sustained by Bay
outside centre Dan Parry late in the game
and the remaining 10 minutes of the match
was played on the second team pitch while
Dan received treatment for his injury,
thankfully the injury was not as serious as
expected and
will make a full recovery.
The Bay started
brightly after a shortened warm-up
due to the evening kick-off and fly-half Pat
Atkinson put the first points on the board
with a penalty after the home side were
caught off-side on their 22m line. The
visitors’ attempt at off-loading miracle
balls failed due to the wet and windy
conditions with advantage being given to
Rhyl and
through this they scored their first try in
the corner to take the lead. The Bay learned
from their mistakes and the forwards started
to take the game to the opposition and from
inside their his own half prop Dewi Hughes
gained valuable metres to re-cycle the ball
and with good handling the ball was spread
wide to left-winger Josh Lloyd who out-paced
several Rhyl
defenders to score a try and restore the
lead. Inside-centre Ethan Morris’s relished
in the spaces in the home defence and he
created his side’s second try by splitting
the defence on their 10m line where
he ran through towards the line and he
unselfishly passed to the supporting flanker
Gaz Williams to score under the posts and
Pat Atkinson converted the extras.
Unfortunately shortly after scoring his try
the open-side flanker suffered a knock on
the head and this disrupted The Bay and lack
of concentration in defence allowed the home
side to score another try to reduce the
deficit. Substitute forward Lloyd
Jones’s impact on the game with his
trademark tackle and jackaling skills was
instrumental in his side’s third
try when he secured possession in his own
half and from the resulting steal no.10
Pat Atkinson sensibly used the elements to
his advantage kicked the ball for territory
and the Rhyl defender was forced to ground
the ball after carrying the ball over his
own try line after being
pursued by the visitors attackers. From the
resulting scrum no.8 Lloyd Jones picked-up
but was stopped short of the line and quick
ball was re-cycled and passed through the
hands for outside-centre Dan Parry to extend
the lead going into the interval.
With The Bay
playing against the elements in the second
period they were forced to do more defending
and both sides suffered from poor handling
and the game entered a scrappy period with
neither team dominating, frustration crept
into the home side’s game and going into the
last quarter the referee made a debatable
decision of red carding the Rhyl right
winger who made
a high
tackle on his opposite number Harry Donegan.
This decision ruined any chance of Rhyl
gaining their first league win and substitute
fly-half Spencer Lumby further extended the
misery on the home side by converting a
penalty. After replacing Dan Parry the
unlucky winger Jake
Foreman suffered a rib injury which required
hospital treatment. After a poor run of
league form this was a satisfying bruising
victory with numerous players were
candidates for man of the match which
eventually was awarded to blind-side flanker
Will Broadway for his defensive work |

Colwyn Bay Youth 10 Llangefni Youth 39 |
|
A strong second
half performance secured victory for
Llangefni after the home side had the
edge in the first half taking a slender lead
going into the interval. The Bay’s forwards
laid the foundation of the first half
performance by taking the ball straight into
their opponents crossing the gain line on
numerous occasions, retaining the ball and
re-cycling clean
ball, this period of early pressure was
rewarded with the opposition being penalised
for handling in the ruck and full-back Pat
Atkinson putting the first points on the
board for the hosts. From the resulting
re-start inspirational captain and prop Sam
Ryan suffered a potentially bad
knee injury whilst trying to judge the
flight of the ball close to the touchline,
consequently the scrums had to go
uncontested for the remainder of the match
due to the limited amount of eligible
front-row cover that the home side had
available. Llangefni started
to impose themselves on the game and they
levelled the scores with a penalty mid way
through the first half then their right
winger scored an opportunist try in the
corner. With the visitors desire to kick for
field position The
Bay used this to their advantage with either
no.8 Jay Williams or wing forward Rhodri
Lloyd consistently winning good ball at the
line-out to set a platform for the backs to
work from. The Bay enjoyed their best period
of the match in the last 10 minutes of the
first half with the home side dictating the
play in the Llangefni 22 and eventually
after several phases scrum half Arthur
Astbury crossed the line and Pat Atkinson
converted to regain the lead.
Shortly after
the interval the home side had to use the
last of their substitutions when fly-half
Josh Lloyd suffered
a leg injury and was replaced by utility
player Will Broadway, this caused a
re-shuffle in The Bay back line. Llangefni
were fortunate in being able to have a full
set of replacements and by frequently being
able to utilise
their strong bench they were able to
capitalise on the hosts deteriorating
fitness levels. Despite conceding five tries
in the second half the home side never gave
up with creditable performances from
stand-in centre Lloyd Jones, centre Ethan
Morris and second rower Nathan Jackson but
for his typical enthusiastic performance
hooker Dewi Hughes was awarded man of the
match. |

The Bay
travelled to Denbigh with just 15 players
,no subs and an inexperienced front row ,so
unopposed scrums was opted. Both sides
struggled to play attractive rugby due to
the heat but the visitors were guilty of
forcing the game and complicating moves in
the first half and not using the downhill
slope on the Denbigh 2nd team
pitch to their advantage. The Bay’s
line-outs worked well all afternoon with
Matt Phelan winning most of his own throws
and stealing the odd one also. The Bay had
to work hard playing uphill in the second
half but were unfortunate to loose centre
Ethan Morris due to a head injury early in
the second half and fly-half Pat Atkinson 5
minutes later with an ankle injury, this
disrupted the side and the home side took
advantage of the extra spaces on the park to
score their four tries. Every player put in
a big effort and blind side flanker Dewi
Hughes man of the match for his ball carries
which always gained his side valuable
metres. |

The long awaited North
Wales Youth Cup quarter final cup tie was
played under floodlights against
the holders Ruthin at Brookfield Drive. The
Bay started confidently with the forwards
competing in the rucks and re-cycling quick
clean ball to the back division who spread
the ball wide at every opportunity and the
Ruthin defence was able to withstand the
early onslaught. After 10 minutes of Bay
dominating the the attack the ball was
turned over and
the visitors fly-half side-stepped The
Bay defence and
broke through into the 22 where he offloaded
to his supporting centre to score the first
points with their first attack in The Bay’s
half. The next 20 minutes the home side had
to defend numerous attacks by the visitors
who dictated the play and The Bay conceded
another 4 tries in this period and blind
side flanker Will Broadway was binned. The
Bay’s heads were
in danger of
dropping at this point but they battled on
and through a powerful surge upfield by the
forwards centre
Dan Parry crossed for his teams first try
just before half time.
A couple of
substitutions were made at the
break and their presence strengthened the
side which saw them spending more time in
their opponents territory with captain Sam
Ryan and centre Jordan Sheridan carrying the
ball effectively and regularly
crossing the gain-line and putting Ruthin on
the back foot. The Bay patiently built
numerous phases inside the visitors 22 and
it was only a matter of time that scrum half
Gaz Williams crossed the whitewash for the
second try.The Bay now realised that Ruthin
were not as confident under pressure and from
a similar build-up and forward pressure to
the second try substitute fly-half Spencer
Lumby scored his side’s third try with five
minutes remaining.
Unfortunately
there was not to be a grandstand finish for
the appreciative crowd and the visitors
re-grouped and defended their lines with The
Bay continuously throwing everything and
there was a sense of relief was shown by
them when the referee blew the final
whistle.The Bay showed terrific character
and effort in their second half performance after
been subjected to a horror period in the
first half and then coming back into the
game in the second half without conceding a
point. The man of the match was awarded to
centre Dan Parry for his outstanding work in
both attack and defence. |

COBRA Youth
65 Colwyn Bay Youth 10 |
|
The Bay
travelled to the Mid-Wales title contenders
COBRA knowing that damage limitation was the
order of the day bearing in mind that they
were reduced to fielding 12 players due to
injuries, work commitments and
unavailability's. The Bay battled hard
through the match with an agreed formation
of five in the pack and a full complement of
backs, the later of which comprised regular
forwards namely captain Sam Ryan, back-rower
Lloyd Jones in the centre and front-rower
Ant Edwards on the right wing, this back
line combination worked well in attack with
Sam Ryan punching holes in the home defence
and Lloyd Jones’s pace carrying on the
momentum to cross the advantage line linking
well with their half-back partnership of
Harry Donegan and Josh Lloyd with Matt Jones
on the opposite wing and Dan Parry at
full-back both of whom were always willing
to join the line and hit the gaps. The
forwards won good ball at the line-outs with
hooker Jordan Wilson hitting his only option
of Matt Phelan consistently but the intense
work-rate of the COBRA defence gave the
visitors minimal time to build phases of
play and turned the ball over on several
occasions due to lack of support.
Numerous
second half substitutions were made by the
hosts which seemed to disrupt their game and
The Bay took advantage of this by carrying
the ball up the middle and forcing the home
team into mistakes, second-row Nathan
Jackson’s led the way from his own 22 then
prop Sean Jones’s penetrating run into the
COBRA 5m saw the revitalised Bay keep
possession and worked the ball out to
fly-half Josh Lloyd whose determination saw
him open The Bay account with the first try.
The visitors were forced to make positional
changes due to injuries, Lloyd Jones whose
bruised rib eventually saw him leave the
park was replaced in the centre by prop Dewi
Hughes and the half-back pairing swapped
roles due to Josh Lloyd’s leg injury.
Self-proclaimed playmaker Dewi Hughes’s
inclusion in the back line was rewarded when
he was instrumental in creating The Bay’s
second try when he spread quick ball wide
for winger Anthony Edwards to score the
first try of his Colwyn Bay career. All
twelve players who represented Colwyn Bay
Youth put in a creditable performance due to
the circumstances and enjoyed the post match
hospitality that COBRA are renowned for
where Josh Lloyd was awarded The Bay’s man
of the match for his attacking and defensive
work. |

Colwyn Bay
Youth 3 Mold Youth 10 |
|
The Bay
welcomed title contenders Mold to
Brookfield Drive for their penultimate home
league fixture. Due to the unavailability of
a number of key front row players the home
side opted to go uncontested at the scrums
which worked in their favour regarding that
traditionally Mold always have a strong and
physical pack, The Bay were also unfortunate
to lose utility back Ethan Morris due to
injury in the warm-up. Having had to
re-shuffle the back division the home side
more than matched their counterparts in
attack and defence. The Bay absorbed Mold ‘s
intense aggressive style throughout the game
and the visitors seemed to get frustrated
by the home side’s purposeful approach and
they were guilty on numerous occasions in
the first half of over enthusiasm at the
contact area in their own half but
unfortunately the dependable boot of
fly-half Pat Atkinson could only succeed
with a solitary penalty taking a slender
lead into half time.
Both sides
continued to play entertaining rugby in the
second half with the visitors noticeably
less intimidating and vocal realising that
they faced a severe test. Mold’s try came
mid-way through the second period when the
home defence panicked and tried to play
themselves out of their own 22 but were
penalised on their 5m line for not releasing
after being tackled and the visitors
maintaining the momentum opted for the scrum
and subsequently they overpowered the home
side’s defence after a couple of phases to
cross the line. Mold’s continued frustration
was apparent when their right winger was
sin-binned for a cynical spear tackle on his
opposite number Lewis Stockton. The Bay
enjoyed regular periods in their opponents
half considering they were playing against
the wind and prop Kristen Yeomans strength
at the maul aided by his pack crossed the
Mold try line but could not ground the ball
and the scrum was wrongly awarded to the
opposition. The visitors stretched their
lead to a converted try with successful
penalty kick with 10 minutes remaing. The
Bay playing with courage and commitment
battled to the final whistle with Mold
showing obvious signs of relief in their
victory.
Captain Lloyd
Jones led by example by encouraging his team
mates and his direct running gaining
valuable metres and good performances was
displayed by second-row Dewi Jones and
outside-centre Josh Lloyd but man of the
match was awarded to inside-centre Jordan
Sheridan who marshalled his back line both
in attack and defence. |

Youth 17 Ruthin Youth 5 |
|
The Bay’s
excellent home form continued with a hard
fought victory against last years league
champions Ruthin. The visitors arrived with
only 14 players with uncontested scrums
being elected by them, unfortunately within
the first five minutes they were reduced to
13 players when their prop suffered an ankle
injury. The Bay’s points were all scored in
the first half with the Bay pack gaining
valuable metres led by Callum Mitchell and
captain Sam Ryan who punched holes in the
Ruthin defence with their direct runs. The
increase in tempo led to the first try when
Callum Mitchell’s quick tap penalty in their
opponents 22 he offloaded to fly-half Pat
Atkinson who passed to the supporting
full-back Harry Donegan to touchdown. Ruthin
absorbed numerous attacks in the first
quarter but their back division always
looked threatening when their playmaker and
fly-half Phyl Roberts took control either
with ball in hand or his tactical kicking.
Against the run of play the home side found
themselves defending a line-out deep in
their own 22 and Matt Phelan’s important
steal and scrum-half Kieran Fardoe’s quick
pass to his fly-half to clear his lines
proved invaluable for his sides next try.
From the resulting line-out the ball went
out to the opposition fly-half who fumbled
the ball under pressure from The Bay’s no.8
Lloyd Jones who hacked the ball twice to win
the race to score under the posts and Pat
Atkinson added the conversion. Line-out
specialist Matt Phelan scored a deserved try
with his catch and drive from a throw-in
deep in the Ruthin 22 for his sides third
try and lead at the interval by 17
unanswered points.
The visitors
as expected applied more pressure in the
second half and enjoyed long periods in the
Bay half frequently breaking the home side’s
first line of defence and only being stopped
by some last ditch tackling. Good phase play
and re-cycling saw Ruthin’s Phyl Roberts
score in the corner. Numerous substitutions
were made during the second half with all
players making creditable performances
especially winger Ash Jones, second row
Nathan Jackson and flanker Geraint Owen.
Both sides worked hard and the two sets of
defences were stretched to the limit with
The Bay’s full-back Harry Donegan equally as
good in attack and defence but the man of
the match was awarded to second row Matt
Phelan for his tireless work rate. |

Pwllheli
Youth 12 Colwyn Bay Youth 7 |
|
The Bay were
denied a victory and even a draw in the
last two minutes of this match. The Bay
lead throughout this game after stand-off
Pat Atkinson’s try and conversion but the
home side hit back midway through the second
half and took the lead in the closing
minutes of the game.
The strong
wind down the pitch was a major factor
tactically, the home side kept it tight in
the forwards with their back row always
taking the ball through the middle ,whereas
The Bay played more adventurous rugby
utilising their quick back line by putting
pressure on their opponents with the kick
chase in the first half or spreading it wide
in the second period. Pat Atkinson’s try
midway into the first half was scored as a
result of excellent support work with good
offloads putting him through in the corner,
he also confidently kicked the conversion.
Playing
against the wind in the second half the
visitors knew they had to work harder and
increase the intensity, they defended the
occasional high ball with ease and the back
three worked well as a unit setting up the
counter attack supported by the strong ball
carriers namely Kristin Yeomans, Dubi Iwobi,
Dewi Hughes and Lloyd Jones who gained hard
yards into the opposition territory.
Pwllheli scored their opening try midway
through the second half after a period of
pressure to set up a nail biting last
quarter. Lock Matt Phelan dominated the
line-out under difficult conditions but in
the closing minutes The Bay spilled the
ball in their 22 and the ball was judged to
have been carried over by the defence, after
a series of re-setting of the scrums
Pwllheli won their own ball and brave
defence could not stop the home side
crashing over to score. With a successful
conversion it meant that The Bay needed a
converted try to win, from the re-start the
forwards gained possession and showing good
composure and discipline at the contact area
they spread the ball wide where No.8 and
captain Lloyd Jones crossed in the corner
but was disallowed for not grounding the
ball. The team played well in difficult
conditions and the introduction of a new
back division did not handicap the
performance with wingers Jake Forman and
Josh Lloyd putting in good performances and
also the debut at youth level for U16 player
Jay White who came on as substitute in the
last quarter and gave a creditable display.
The man of the match was awarded to Dewi
Hughes for his industrious work-rate and
commitment around the park. |

Youth 23 Wrexham Youth 0 |
|
The Bay
entertained Wrexham in this league and cup
double header and the second half
performance secured the victory with
replacement left-winger Lewis Stockton
scoring a hat-trick of tries.The two sides
were playing their first game for two months
due to the weather and the Christmas
lay-off rustiness was evident in both sides
play but the visitors settled into their
game early and were unfortunate not to take
the lead by narrowly failing to convert a
penalty and full-back Harry Donegan’s try
saving tackle.Midway through the first
period fly-half Pat Atkinson opened his
side’s account by successfully converting a
penalty after Wrexham had failed to stay on
their feet at the ruck on their 22m.Both
sides struggled to dominate and an
interesting second half lay in prospect.
An enforced
substitution early in the second half
changed the course of the game when inside
centre Jordan Sheridan had to be replaced
due to a knee injury by Lewis Stockton. With
the visitors camped in The Bay 5m and with
their forwards pressurising the home
try-line the Wrexham pack lost control of
the ball and it popped out of the side of
the blind side of the ruck where the alert
Bay No.8 Lloyd Jones passed it to Lewis
Stockton to run virtually the length of the
field to score the opening try which was
converted by Pat Atkinson.The visitors
continued to pressurise but could not
capitalise by opportunities created by them
with The Bay defence forcing too many errors
even when the home side were down to 14
players with the sin-binning of right-winger
Ethan Morris.Tactical substitutions in the
second half paid dividends with replacement
blind-side flanker Jack Foster’s strength at
the contact area turning numerous balls over
to his side’s advantage. As the half
progressed the home side asserted their
dominance and No.8 Lloyd Jones was
unfortunate that his pick-up from the scrum
on the opposition 5m line was judged to have
been held-up but from the resulting scrum
substitute scrum-half Arthur Astbury passed
to his No.10 who offloaded to Lewis Stockton
to scorein the corner.Entering the last
quarter the visitors were frustrated that
their forwards were working hard and their
back division could not penetrate the home
defence.Pat Atkinson scored another penalty
to extend the lead and the final nail in the
coffin was hammered home when Wrexham had
made a last effort to restore pride in
themselves, when close to the home side’s
try line they attempted spread the ball on
the blind side but the live-wire Lewis
Stockton intercepted the pass to sprint the
length of the pitch to score. The victory
showed the importance of being able to field
a strong squad and numerous candidates were
named for man of the match which eventually
went to captain Sam Ryan. |

Llangefni
Youth 29 Colwyn Bay Youth 27 |
|
The Bay were
cruelly denied a superb victory in the dying
seconds of a pulsating match at Llangefni.
With seconds of the match remaining
full-back Harry Donegan produced a brilliant
try saving tackle on the Cefni flanker in
his own 22 only to suffer a potentially
serious neck injury for his efforts, play
continued and the home side were 10metres
from the line when the referee who was
unaware of the medics attending the injured
full-back, awarded a penalty against The Bay
which was quickly taken and then the ball
was recycled to the Cefni backs to score the
try to level the match which was
successfully converted to gain themselves a
fortunate win.
The Bay
opened the scoring with a Pat Atkinson
penalty which was cancelled out minutes
later with a similar offence by the visitors
but Cefni’s large pack paved the way for the
first try when their No.8 got his hands on
the ball illegally from the side of the
ruck with to cross for a breakaway try. The
Bay showed good character to hit straight
back at the opposition with good support and
strength at the contact area, quick delivery
from the ruck found fly-half Pat Atkinson
who drew players in and passed to full-back
Harry Donegan to go over for a try in the
corner. The Bay’s confidence grew after the
opening try but could not stop Cefni’s
forwards drive into the visitors 22 and were
unable to stop the home No.8 powering
himself over to increase their lead. With
half time approaching continued belief saw
The Bay play creative, intelligent rugby by
taking the opportunity for gaining
territory from another Cefni infringement
saw Pat Atkinson find his touchline and from
the subsequent lineout offloaded to centre
Dan Parry who stepped inside the defence to
score under the posts and level the match at
the break.
The visitors
kept up the momentum into the second period
and within five minutes they regained the
lead with an excellently worked try, again
gaining ground from the home side’s
indiscipline won the lineout mauled the ball
and then scrum-half Arthur Astbury released
the ball to Pat Atkinson to hit the gap to
score. The home side made numerous
substitutions which disrupted their game and
The Bay took full advantage of this to
increase their lead with the best try of the
match which was set up by No.8 Harry
Pemberton whose offload in the tackle
released the supporting Dan Parry to score
unopposed under the posts. With minutes to
go the tiring Bay pack who had worked
tirelessly all afternoon could not steal the
home side’s lineout ball eight metres from
their own try line and conceded a crucial
try in the left hand corner, the substitute
left-footed goal kicker converted the
difficult kick which consequently won them
the match.
The Bay
produced an excellent, committed,
disciplined display with all players
candidates for man of the match which was
awarded to Pat Atkinson whose tactical
kicking always gaining territory for his
side. |

Youth 27 Denbigh Youth 7 |
|
The Bay
consolidated their mid table league position
with a comfortable win against Denbigh
scoring five tries in the process. The
visitors opened the scoring in the first ten
minutes after their right winger beat his
marker to score a try which was successfully
converted. The home side hit back and
enjoyed long periods of play in their
opponents half but struggled to string good
passages of play together due to wayward
passes or losing too much ball at the
contact area. Left winger Ethan Morris
scored the first points of the afternoon for
The Bay as he intercepted a pass on his
10m line to score and leaving the hosts
trailing by two points at the interval.
Denbigh had
to defend wave upon wave of Bay assaults
during the second half and they were
masterful in their tactic of slowing the
ball down at the ruck area disrupting quick
ball for The Bay, eventually the defence was
breached after full-back Harry Donegan
created the extra man on the left wing to
score in the corner to take the lead. The
appearance of substitute right winger Lewis
Stockton after the break caused huge
problems for the visitors and every time he
received the ball he would gain valuable
territory and he was rewarded with a try
which was converted by Harry Donegan.
Denbigh’s decision to go uncontested in the
scrums saw the rampaging prop Dubi Iwobi
score his side’s final two tries.Numerous
players were candidates for man of the match
and all players raised their game after the
previous week’s performance, after a lengthy
deliberation Harry Donegan was chosen as the
MOTM for his disciplined, committed display

The Bay
travelled to Mold where their forwards laid
the foundation of their victory in the
opening quarter by scoring three tries
exposing The Bay’s weakness by allowing the
opposition to dominate the early exchanges,
the home side easily penetrated the visitors
defence with The Bay missing too many
first-up tackles. It was not until the
second quarter that The Bay started to
impose themselves on the game by tightening
up at the scrum, increasing the intensity
at the contact area and gaining valuable
territory through the home side being
penalised for over enthusiasm at the ruck.
Mold attacked the majority of the visitors
line-outs thwarting any quick ball off the
top and using their strength to keep the
game tight in the forwards and to hold the
ball up but when the backs gained possession
they posed a thwart to the opposition
defence with their accurate passing and
speed which was rewarded when outside centre
Dan Parry linked well with his fellow centre
Ethan Morris to out sprint the cover defence
to score the visitors first try. Mold were
penalised for a high tackle on the try
scorer and The Bay continued to pressurise
and started to believe in themselves
enjoying the period up to half time camped
in the opponents 22.
Numerous
substitutions were made during the second
half and after conceding an early score The
Bay continued to try and involve their back
division in their attacks but were
persistently denied by the encroaching Mold
defence who denied the visitors time and
space on several occasions without being
penalised. The game opened out with the
tiring Mold pack struggling after their
early onslaught and The Bay were playing
more in their opponents territory and they
scored the best try of the match after good
support and build-up in midfield worked the
ball wide and up into the 22 where quick
ball was produced to spread the ball down
the line for Harry Pemberton to touchdown
bearing in mind that the visitors were down
to 14 players due to scrum-half Arthur
Astbury being treated for an injury.
Unfortunately the home side scored another
converted try 10 minutes from the end but
The Bay produced a spirited performance up
to the final whistle. The man of the match
was5th
awarded to
loose-head prop Krystin Yeomans for his
scrummaging and industrious work rate around
the park. |

Colwyn Bay
Youth 53 Rhyl Youth 0 |
|
The Bay
produced their best team performance of the
season by beating a young Rhyl side scoring
eight tries in the process. The visitors
stated their intention straight from the
kick off by putting the home side under
pressure and turning the ball over with ease
but when The Bay eventually settled down and
retained possession they stamped their
authority on the game with the forwards
giving the backs a solid platform to work
from which resulted in the backs scoring
seven out of the eight tries. The Bay
dominated the set-pieces and were quicker
and stronger at the breakdown with clean
ball being consistently presented to either
the forwards to gain more ground or the
confident backs who linked well with each
other all afternoon. Outside centre Dan
Parry scored a hat-trick of tries by beating
his opponents with his trademark blistering
pace, right winger Lewis Stockton got
outside his markers to score a couple of
tries, full-back Alex Trowman’s willingness
to enter the line at every opportunity saw
him score a deserved try and loose-head prop
Callum Mitchell’s presence of mind to take a
quick tap penalty 5m from the Rhyl saw him
cross over to score. The Bay produced a fine
commendable display of fifteen man rugby,
accurate passing, good support play and
maturity which reflected in awarding Pat
Atkinson the man of the match who controlled
the game at fly-half and contributed scoring
a try, kicking five conversions and a
penalty. |

Ruthin Youth
34 Colwyn Bay Youth 13 |
|
The Bay
travelled to last years league champions
Ruthin and they were on the receiving end
of a Ruthin backlash after their previous
weeks defeat at Mold. The Cae Ddol side
scored two early tries taking advantage of
the visitors notorious slow start and a
another try should have been scored but the
home side were denied by a superb try saving
tackle by captain Lloyd Jones when his
opponent received the ball on The Bay’s 10m
line and sprinted towards the posts but was
denied inches away from the line. During the
second quarter The Bay settled into their
game and enjoyed their best period of the
match and fly-half Pat Atkinson put the
first points on the board for his side by
converting a penalty. With The Bay dictating
the game and putting pressure on the home
defence the forwards drove across the gain
line several times drawing in the home
defence and scrum-half Kieran Fardoe got
quick ball from the ruck where he passed to
open side flanker Lloyd Jones whose
side-step beat his marker to score a well
worked try.
After the break the home side dominated the
match and The Bay struggled to keep
possession and defended for long periods
inside their own half, Ruthin’s hungrier
pack gained numerous turn-over ball and
their talented back line led by fly-half
Phyl Roberts cut through weak tackles to
score another five tries. Pat Atkinson
converted a consolation penalty mid-way
through the second half and the man of the
match was awarded to outside-centre Dan
Parry for his territorial gains with ball
in hand and his tackling. |

Colwyn Bay Youth 15 Pwllheli Youth 8 |
|
For the second consecutive week The Bay
came from behind to clinch a victory in
this match that was riddled with handling
errors from both sides due to the wet
conditions. The home side struggled in the
opening period to keep possession and kept
loosing territory to a disciplined defence
who turned over the ball with regular ease
with the Pwllheli flanker inspirational in
this aspect and he broke numerous weak
tackles to score the visitors try. It was
not until the later stages of the first half
that the home side began find spaces opening
up around the park and were camped for short
periods on the Pwllheli try line but they
still tried to punch holes in the defence
rather than drawing in their opponents to
create more space out wide making. The
visitors extended their lead before the
break with a penalty for handling in the
ruck.
The Bay had more possession and territory
in the second half with the back-row
beginning to assert their presence on the
game, Lloyd Jones with his excellent
tackling and jakaling technique and fellow
flanker Sam Ryan gaining valuable metres
with his strong ball carrying skills, while
fly-half Patrick Atkinson slotted an early
penalty to put the first points on the board
for his side. The home side continued to
dominate but were unable to put pressure
into points until outside centre Dan Parry
exploited a weakness out wide and seized the
opportunity to score an excellent individual
try to level the scores. With minutes to go
The Bay continued the momentum and Matt
Phelan secured clean line out ball and it
was spread wide where right winger Lewis
Stockton sprinted 25m to cross in the
corner, the difficult conversion was
successfully kicked by Pat Atkinson leaving
Pwllheli having to score twice to gain a
result. Man of the match was awarded to Dubi
Iwobi for his strength and presentation
around the contact area. |

Wrexham Youth 12 Colwyn Bay Youth 26 |
|
On a blistering hot day The Bay youth
recorded their first league win and produced
a fantastic performance to beat hosts
Wrexham. Traffic delays restricted the
visitors warm-up period and this clearly
showed when the home side took the lead in
the early stages with some direct, strong
running by their powerful pack to score the
first try. Wrexham were far more aggressive
in the contact area and on numerous
occasions turned Bay ball over when the
visitors were guilty of not being quick
enough to react. The Bay went 12-0 down in
the first quarter when fly-half Pat
Atkinson's clearance kick was charged down
and the following Wrexham player just got
downward pressure before the dead ball line.
This was the wake-up call that the visitors
needed to get back into the game and with
the forwards getting more organised at the
rucks to secure the ball good quick
distribution by scrum-half Kieran Fardoe to
his back line showed frailties in the home
sides defence and The Bay backs found plenty
of spaces either out wide or through the
middle of the park and outside centre Dan
Parry scored The Bay's first try beating
several defenders to score. Pat Atkinson's
speculative kick from a scrum just inside
the visitors half was rewarded with a try
when he pressurised the defender forcing the
mistake and he deservedly touched down and
put his side in the lead by converting his
own try. The Bay were growing in confidence
and they were not intimidated by their
physically larger counterparts and they
rarely missed a tackle all afternoon.
A mistake in gathering the ball by The Bay
from the start of the second half could
have been punished by the home side but from
the resulting line-out the visiting pack
drove Wrexham back causing a huge
psychological blow and the home side
frequently lacked ideas to regain the lead.
The Bay's feared backs consistently posed
problems with their speed and handling
skills, left-winger Noodles scored an
excellent try beating several defenders
before cutting back inside to score and the
inspirational inside centre Jordan Sheridan
scored a deserved try after some brilliant
support play by captain Lloyd Jones to
offload to his No.12 to score under the
posts. Colwyn Bay dominated the closing
minutes and the pack's confidence really
were boosted when they gained 25m into their
opponents territory with an excellently
controlled driving maul.
Three candidates for man of the match were
selected by the coaches and the players
elected the top player which was
second-row Matt Phelan for his outstanding
contribution at the line-out. |

Colwyn Bay Youth 0 COBRA Youth 10 |
|
The Bay welcomed COBRA to Brookfield Drive
for their first home league game of the
2011-2012 season where both sets of defences
were put to the test in this encounter.
COBRA's heavier pack stated their intention
with some strong direct running, good
presentation and excellent offloading in
their back line which resulted in an early
converted try. The visitors continued to
pressurise The Bay defence who were guilty
in the first period of being regularly
turned over by not being strong and
competitive in and around the rucks and were
often held up and conceded possession when
taking the ball into the maul.Midway through
the first half The Bay started to belief in
themselves as the visitors were made to
attack from deeper inside their territory as
they lacked ideas how to penetrate the solid
Bay defence.
After an early scare in the second half when
full-back Alex Trowman's try saving tackle
on the COBRA centre, the home side enjoyed
the majority of possession and territory in
this period attacking and pressurising the
COBRA defence with some excellent passages
of play and good ball retention. The
forwards worked well at the set-pieces to
provide a platform for the backs and The Bay
always looked the most likely to put points
on the board but were dealt a body blow in
the last minute when the visitors
consolidated their lead with a penalty.
Despite the result the coaches were very
optimistic and encouraged by the committed
performance by all squad members and
numerous players were candidates for man of
the match which went to prop Krystin Yeomans
for his work rate and skills. |

Caernarfon Youth 38 Colwyn Bay Youth 5 |
|
The Bay opened their new season with a
spirited performance against Caernarfon,
unfortunately the visitors could only raise
13 players due to illness and injury. The
home side scored two early tries and both
sides were guilty of numerous handling
mistakes due to the indifferent weather
conditions, once the visitors had settled
down they exerted a lot of pressure on The
Cofis and gained valuable territory but the
home side's defence held firm. The Bay's
line-out worked well all afternoon and from
stealing Cofi ball at the line winger Ash
Jones crossed for a well deserved try. All
13 players battled hard throughout the match
and they gave 100% on a difficult
afternoon's rugby. |
