Abergele 0 – 47 Colwyn Bay Colwyn Bay kicked off playing into a strong wind so it was expected that much of the period would be spent defending. However, hard work by the forwards and good inter play meant the Bay made a number of early breaks in to Abergele' s half. These early attacks lead to a set piece on the 10 meter line which was quickly moved out to Steve Thatcher who chipped the upcoming defence and beat the full back to gather his own kick and pass to Tom Williams who ran in under the posts unopposed for the first try of the match. The try being converted by Steve Thatcher. This early try gave the whole team a confidence boost and as a result the forwards began to dominate. This was most emphatically shown when the pack took a scrum against the head in the Abergele 22 which was moved quickly out to Gareth Jenkins on the wing who crossed for the second try of the match before the defence could re-organise themselves. As the half progressed a clear pattern emerged as Abergele tried to kick their way out of defence with Bay running the ball back setting up a series of phases to stretch the defence, and set up good field position. From one of these attacks the Bay won a scrum just outside the 22 which they ran right and using a set move Steve Thatcher took a return run around pass from Liam Hasnip to make a short pass to Tom Williams who went thought the gap at pace to score mid way out from the posts. Again the try was converted by Steve Thatcher. Just before half time the Bay were pushed back into their own half for the first time in the game and were forced to kick the ball to ease the pressure. As Abergele had pushed up in attack the kick through was not well defended and from the resultant confusion Steve Thatcher forced his way over for a try under the posts which he converted himself. The first half soon ended with Bay leading 26-0. The second half started with uncontested scrums due to injuries to the Abergele front row which reduced the Bay’s attacking options. However, the forwards soon adjusted and set up a number of attacks deep in the Abergele 22. From one of these attacks the forwards took a clean catch at the line out and drove to the line only to be held up over the line. From the ensuing scrum the forwards set up another drive which led to Mike McDonagh going over for a try which was converted by Steve Thatcher. As the half continued the pace of the game slowed as players began to tire, but the Bay continued to pressure and won a penalty 5 meters out as the ball was slowed down by a defender. The forwards used this position to run a set piece penalty which following a series of close in drives led to Luke Farrow scoring the sixth try out near the corner. This was again converted by Steve Thatcher. Late in the half Abergele broke out and had their best scoring chance with only their first visit to the Bay’s 22. This was thwarted by the hard work of the Bay forwards who held the ball up some 5 meters short and drove the maul back in order to win the put in at the ensuing scrum which was easily cleared. As the game finished Bay again got into the opposition half and following a series of drives by the forwards the ball was released to the backs allowing Steve Williams to scamper over under the posts. The game ended with his conversion of his own try. This was the best performance of the team to date, and the result was down to the hard work the lads have put into training over past few weeks with a structured well executed game plan with everyone playing for each other.
