Colwyn bay 22 – 27 Pwllheli

The Bay, for the first time this season, went into this game with a near full strength side for this difficult game against one of the best teams in the league. The Bay started well with a kick off into the wind that the visitors failed to receive. Following a number of attacking opportunities the Bay’s centre crashed over for the opening score.

However, Pwllheli came back strongly and following a sustained period of pressure they scored a try close in, which was converted to give the visitors a 7-5 lead. Soon after this score the visitors were awarded a penalty at the break down, which they kicked to extend their lead to 10-5.

For the rest of the half the Bay got their forward game going well and eventually got themselves into an attacking position with a line out 5 meters from the try line. The throw was well taken and the forwards drove to the line for Luke Thomas to crash over out wide. The half ended with the match tied 10-10.

Playing with the strong wind in the second half, the expectations of a first win at home were high. However, from the kick off the Bay failed to clear their lines and Pwllheli scored their second try. This disappointing start was added to, as the visitors scored again to increase their lead to 22-10.

At this point the Bay’s structure and discipline started to deteriorate and the side started to give away a string of unnecessary penalties, which gave the visitors a distinct territorial advantage. This inevitably led to their fourth try to stretch the lead to 27-10.

The young Bay side responded well to this seemingly impossible position by using the wind to gain good field position, which allowed the home centre to score his second try of the match. This score gave the Bay confidence and they were quickly back on the attack with Steve Williams going over from close in, for the fourth try of the game, which was converted by Steve Thatcher.

With the score now at 22-27 to the visitors, but with time running out, the Bay could sense a possible victory. However, despite a number of chances they failed to score again.

This was one of the best all round performances of the year to-date and on another day the side may have pinched a victory. The side should now look to build on this performance and learn to play with the same intensity and commitment with which they finished the game.
