Minolta Cup – Saturday 24 September Barry
RFC 31 - Colwyn Bay RFC 8 Colwyn Bay had a tough draw
against third division Barry who were unbeaten in their opening two league
games. Both sides were encouraged from the touch line by
enthusiastic supporters. The Bay edged the early
forward exchanges but honours remained even with one missed penalty apiece.
The strong Barry pack soon recovered and put together a series of driving
mauls resulting in a penalty kick by centre Chris Cummins after 15 minutes.
Barry maintained the pressure with a long kick to the Bay line, the Barry
pack regained possession and a backs’ move resulted in an unconverted try wide
out by wing Dave Provis after 30 minutes. This
was shortly followed by a disputed try awarded to Barry scrum half John Dimond,
who seemed to lose control of the ball over the line. Good pressure by the Bay
forwards was followed by a penalty for a Barry late tackle, converted by Bay
outside half Tom Duffy. Shortly
afterwards the Bay infringed at a maul and the resulting penalty was converted
by Chris Cummins and he kicked a further penalty on 55 minutes.
A clever move down the touchline by the Barry pack resulted in second row
Matthew Campbell forcing his way over the line for an unconverted try. The Bay started to put
increasing pressure on the Barry line but Barry’s defence remained solid.
Barry broke out of defence and a move along the backs created an opening
for wing Dave Provis to cross for his second try, converted by Chris Cummins. To their credit the Bay
didn’t lie down and a handling movement by forwards and backs from inside
their own half resulted in prop Chris Brown crashing over for an unconverted try
near the corner, right on time. Barry
ran out deserved winners 31-8. The Bay will be seeking their first league win of the campaign at home against Caernarfon this Saturday.
