2006/7 Presentation Evening

On Thursday 3 May the Mermaids showed that they are as good at partying as they are at rugby! After discovering that both the U14 and U17 teams had become North Wales champions it was decided to hold a party on their presentation night to celebrate this great double act.

The night started off with team photographs being taken by a photographer from North Wales Living magazine – the photographer said she could only stay for a short while but ended up staying for hours and taking loads of pics!

The club was crowded as many people turned out to celebrate with us. The awards were presented by Chairman Bill Atwill after citations were read out by Geoff Taylor, Director of Girls’ Rugby. The awards were:

U14:

  • Most Improved Player – Jessica Oliver
  • Players Player – Kaya Harding
  • Coaches Player – Amy Bird
  • Captains Award – Kumari Tilakawardane

U17:

  • Most Improved Player – Rebecca Gray
  • Players Player – Joely Benton
  • Coaches Player – Jess Rhodes
  • Captains Award – Emma Beaumont

Also certificates were given to those leaving the U17 team this year:

  • Jess Rhodes
  • Rebecca Gray
  • Rebecca Edwards
  • Issy Jones
  • Pippa Broadway

After these awards Ann, Louis, Geoff and Ray were surprised to be called up by some of the girls (organised by Kumari and Jess) for a special award. We were each handed long thin boxes and Jess Rhodes read out a speech saying that, just like the recipients each gift seemed a little silly by itself but together they worked perfectly – the gifts were – a knife (Louis), fork (Ann), dessert spoon (Geoff) and teaspoon (Ray) – they were engraved with our names – an unusual but very special gift.

Then it was food time – all the girls (and parents) had brought some party food and we were astonished at the amount of food – even with a clubhouse full of rugby players, we couldn’t finish it. Then there was the cake cutting ceremony – Jane Owen brought 2 lovely cakes depicting rugby fields and Jess Rhodes brought a ‘photo’ cake, with a picture of the U17 Mermaids on the icing. Geoff cut the cake with the help of the two team captains and then came the complicated task of cutting it up – each player insisted on eating their own head (if you see what I mean!).

The disco was provided by Ray Caldwell (or Ray-von as he is now known) and was greatly enjoyed by all. Some of us had been promised by Geoff that he would give us an exhibition of his special dance (don’t ask) but on the night he said he was ‘too tired’ – we still hope to be thrilled by his steps in the future.

At one point an impromptu rugby match broke out on the field – some of the girls were hampered by the fact that they were wearing their disco clothes (not really ideal rugby wear) but they just can’t stop playing!
