Well done to everyone and thank you to all those who have helped out with the under 8's this season. Have a great summer and I hope to see you all again in September. 30th April '06
Colwyn Bay Triumph in Inaugural
Competition
Colwyn Bay RFC hosted an Under 9 tackle
rugby tournament last Sunday, sponsored by energy company, First Hydro, with 4
teams, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Flint and Caernarfon competing in what is
hoped will be an annual event.
The tournament was full of good quality,
attacking rugby by all 4 teams, two of which, Flint and Caernarfon had only
recently started tackle rugby, Llandudno who are strong opposition for any
team at all age groups and Colwyn Bay who have had a fantastic season with
only 1 defeat leading into the competition.
The tournament was held in a mini-league format
with Colwyn Bay eventually triumphant with three wins out of three, climaxed
by a hard fought 2 tries to nil win over Llandudno, with the Bay having
to withstand lots of pressure from a big Llandudno pack, which they did with a
fantastic display of tackling by all the team and scoring two first half
long range tries.
Presenting the trophy to the winning Bay
side, First Hydro manager Mike Maudsley said 'We are pleased to have hosted
such a successful tournament, and seeing at first hand the young rugby talent
that is available across North Wales'
Top try scorers throughout the tournament were Oscar Astbury with 7, Adam Stroud (4) both Colwyn Bay, Luke Davies (3) and James Cimatti (3) both Llandudno.
Each team awarded their own player of the
torunament with Oscar getting the Colwyn Bay medal, Seiorse Hughes for
Llandudno, James Bennett for Flint and Jessica Rowlands on behalf of the
whole Caernarfon team.
As well as the scorers, Bay forwards,
Christian Copeland, Lewis Shaw, Ryan Davies and David Edwards all
made invaluable contributions with their powerful rucking and
mauling, supported by swift back play from Gareth Mansfield, Scott
Kane and Rhys Thomas who made vital yardage when it was most needed.
A fantastic effort by all concerned
and a good days Rugby.

capatilised on using the rucking and mauling skills picked up in training.
26th March '06 Under 9's Tackle Ruthin 15 Colwyn Bay 10
Ruthin U9's played very strongly to
score 3 unanswered tries in the first half against Colwyn Bay. The Bay
team previously undefeated this season rallied after the break with an individual
blind side score from Scott Kane and a second soon after from Adam
Stroud. The backs Connah Harding, Oscar Asbury, Tomos Caldwell and Luke
Rawichii made telling runs but the Ruthin defence held out with
good tackling and team work. Bay forwards Remy Sheil, Christian
Copeland, David Edwards, Ryan Davies and Lewis Shaw worked hard to
secure clean ball and gain ground but ran out of time when referee
Martin Kane blew the final whistle on a tough thrilling game which players
and supporters from both side thoroughly enjoyed.
19th March '06 Under 9's Tackle The Bay were missing three key players in this game with Oscar
Asbury, Luke Rawichii and Christian Copeland all unavailable, however the
strength in depth that this age group was required for the visit against Bala.
Colwyn Under 8's Tag Colwyn bay under 8s played a Conwy knockout tournament on Sunday against Nant Conwy and Llandudno for a chance to play in the finals at Cardiff. First of all they played Nant Conwy, it was a tuff match for both sides and ended up a draw at 7 all...then a very tired Colwyn bay went on to play Llandudno straight after only to lose the match 7 tries to 5, so unfortunately no Cardiff for Colwyn bay. All this will do is make this brilliant team bounce back better and stronger ( Carlsberg don't make under 8s rugby team but if they did Colwyn bay under 8s would probably be the best under 8s team in the world). Man of the match goes to the whole team for a wonderful effort. Well done you bunch of superstars. 26th February '06 Under 8's Tag Colwyn Bay under 8s travelled to Llangefni on a very cold and windy Sunday morning. Colwyn Bay opened the try scoring with Billy young scoring in the first ten seconds, and Billy went on to score 6 tries. Joseff McAlinden had a great game with 11 good tackles and 2 tries. Sion Jones come on leaps and bounds with a handful of tackles and 2 good tries. tom cairns had a cracking game with 1 try, Clayton, Braydon and Rhodri all defended well for the bay. Chloe Howells played her best game of the season with 9 tackles and 4 tries giving her man/woman of the match. an absolute brilliant performance from all the team. final score Llangefni 6 Colwyn Bay 15 Under 9's Tackle Colwyn Bay under 9's undefeated season continues with an impressive away win, led by Captain Osian Morgan, who was playing for the last time for the Club, over a well organised Llangefni team. The Bay opened the game with a quick try from Tomos Caldwell, playing in the forwards. However, a well drilled Llangefni back line ensured that the Bay, in spite of dominating the first half in possession and territory, led by only one try at half time. After an inspiring team talk at half time by the Bay's coaches Aiden Sheil and Mark Mansfield the Bay went about the task of converting the possession and territory gained into points and a try was scored early in the second half by Remy Sheil. With the home side tiring in the second half and with the Bay superior fitness beginning to show, the Llangefni side struggled to get out of the their own half. When Llangefni did cross the halfway line they were brought to the ground b some outstanding tackling by the backs with Connor Harding, Oscar Asbury, Scott kane, Gareth Mansfield and Adam Stroud making some big defensive tackles. Late in the second half the Bay backs cut loose and 'speed merchant' Oscar Asbury scored two further quick tries from deep positions. Only some desperate try saving tackling by the Llangefni back stopped the final score line being significantly higher. The Bay had the ball over the line on three further occasions in the second half, but could not ground the ball on two occasions, and knocked the ball forward over the line on the other. The Man of the Match was awarded to scrum half Scott Kane, for defensive tackling, passing and securing the ball on the floor with his body. However, all players were given 9 points for great team effort and other notable forward performances were given by Christian Copeland, Osian Morgan and Lewis Shaw who once again showed more of his latent promise. This was our first time that the Bay under 9's tackle team played against Llangefni, and we were given a very warm welcome and the club had excellent facilities. 19th February '06 Under 9's Tackle Denbigh 3 - 6 Colwyn Bay Faced with having no game this week, the under nines hastily arranged a fixture and travelled to Denbigh, who fielded a formidable team including some big forwards, determined to stop this undefeated team. In spite of being smaller than the Denbigh pack, the Bay forwards put in a fantastic performance with team captain of the day David Edwards leading from the front, with some magnificent support from Tomos Caldwell, who played his best game of the season. The mauling and rucking by the Bay forwards to stop the Denbigh pack was of the highest order and strong performances were also put in by the Bay's other 'big boys' such as Christian Copeland, Nicholas Ingham, Remy Sheil and Lewis Shaw who was making a welcome return to the forwards. The Bay went into an early three try lead with the tries from the backs Adam Stroud, Connor Harding and Oscar Asbury. A second half, fight back by the big Denbigh pack, narrowed the score line at one point in the game to a one try margin, and at three tries to two, the Bay had to fight for every ball in the second half. However, some magnificent tackling by the Bay rebuffed this Denbigh fight back with Luke Rawichii playing this week in the centre. When Denbigh did break through Rhys Thomas put in some try saving tackling to haul Denbigh down before the line was crossed. As the game progressed the Bay maintained good playing discipline and only gave away one penalty, where as Denbigh handling in the ruck and high tackling gave away many penalties. The Bay capitalised upon these penalties running in further second half tries from David Edwards, Tomos Caldwell and a spectacular full length of the field try from Oscar Asbury his second of the game. The Man of the Match was awarded to Tomos Caldwell who played up front this week and played his best game of the season with outstanding tackling, mauling and refusal to let ball be taken by opposition. 12th February '06 Under 10's Tackle Llandudno 8 - 1 Colwyn bay. 5th February '06 Under 8's TagColwyn Bay under 8's played a very good defensive game against Caernarfon with the cores tied at 7 all. Man of the Match was awarded to Aled Bysouth for excellent tagging, Mathew Glenn scored 3 tries and Billy Young scored 4 tries the rest of the team Tom, Clinton , Anthony , Ross ,Joseph. Well done boys. Under 9's Tackle Colwyn Bay's under nine tackle team, unbeaten record remains intact, after an impressive away win against Caernarfon. Colwyn Bay started slowly this week, and at half time, were ahead by two tries to nil, through quick running by the backs, with Oscar Astbury and Connor Harding leading the try scoring. The forwards led by Nicholas Ingham battled hard to secure better ball in the second half, from a well-organised Caernarfon defensive side. The Bay's 4 tries were from Adam Stroud and a hatrick from Man of the Match Oscar Astbury. Colwyn Bay 4 - Caernarfon 0 After beating Caernarfon the Bay under nines then went onto play a further match against Bala under nines, who gave the Bay a much harder test than the home side. Strong running by the Bay half backs particularly Gareth Mansfield got the Bay off to a good start and set up tries for Oscar Astbury, Adam Stroud and Connor Harding. The Bay forwards Tomos Caldwell, Remy Sheil,Osian Morgan, Jack Morris and David Edwards using their height and strength maintained the Bay momentum in the first half. However, in the second half Bala hit back with three tries in quick succession and only last gasp try saving tackling by the Bay backs Scott Kane, Rhys Thomas secured victory in a nail biting finish. Man of the Match was Adam Stroud for all round attacking and defending. Colwyn Bay 5 - Bala 3 22nd January '06
Under 8's Tag
Colwyn Bay Under 8's put another strong
performance and beat Rhyl 9 tries to 3. Try scorer's for the Bay were Aled
Bysouth, Billy Young and Matthew Glen. Under 9's Tackle Rhyl U9's 0 Colwyn Bay U9's 11
The Under 9's tackle team still remain
undefeated this season and ran out comfortable winners playing at Rhyl on the
22nd January. With Rhyl only recently converting to tackle rugby it proved to
be an easier fixture than the one against Nant Conwy the previous week,
although Rhyl tackled bravely against a well drilled Bay team.
The bay opened well with tries from Adam Stroud,
Nicholas Ingham, Luke Rawichii (4), Gareth Mansfield and Tomos Caldwell to
lead 8-0 at half time. Strong forward pressure by David Edwards, Jack Morris,
Nicholas Ingham and Remy Sheil ensured Rhyl had little possession, and good
recycling of the ball ensured the Bay were able to launch attacks from deep
positions.
When Rhyl did break with the ball, Bay tackling
was of the highest order with Gareth Mansfield and Scott Kane putting in big
tackles to stop the flow of ball and Rhyl were continually pegged into their
own half. Swift, decisive running from the backs led to three
further tries from Adam Stroud, Jack Morris and Connor Harding. Any
breakouts by Rhyl were quickly stopped especially by superb tackling from
Connor Harding. Late on Lewis Shaw, Rhys Thomas and Osian Morgan went close
for the Bay; being held up by valiant Rhyl tackling on their own try line. In such a free scoring match the coaches awarded
the man of the match to Connor Harding for his tackling in defence and his
ball handling skills.
Under 10's Tackle Rhyl U10's 6 Colwyn Bay U10's 4 A game played over 3 15 minutes, Rhyl opened the scoring early on with a couple of quick tries and the flood gates from the previous two games appeared to be opening, but the Bay dug deep and scored from Jacob Griffith, Sean Sheridan, Niall Dogherty and a great try from Jack Duncalf following some good mauling work. Man of the Match went to Sean Sheridan with the coaches award going to Jordan Russell. 15th January ' 06 Under 8's Tag Colwyn Bays Under 8’s narrowly lost by 4 tries to 3 when they visited Nant Conwy. Both teams played exciting rugby both in attack and defence. Billy Young scored the three Colwyn Bay tries and was named man of the match. All the Colwyn Bay players showed good commitment, effort and worked as one team only loosing out to a last minute try by Nant Conwy. Despite loosing this was one of the best performances by the Under 8’s this season and the team is going from strength to strength. The next match for the under 8’s is away at Rhyl on the 22nd Jan, so come and watch! Under 9's Tackle As followers of junior rugby in North Wales will know, Nant Conwy have been the strongest team in the area for a while, often going a full season undefeated. However this Sunday the Colwyn Bay's U9's tackle team ended Nant’s long undefeated record in a pulsating game played in good spirit by both teams. Nant Conwy opened at great speed with their outstanding hooker Gethin Shon going over for a try within 2 minutes. The bay under nines were quick to respond with Luke Rawichii running in a try after strong forward play by David Edwards, Henry Fowler, Jack Morris and Nicholas Ingham. The forward play by both sides was of the highest order and the match remained level at half time. In the second half, quick service from the half backs, Scott Kane and Gareth Mansfield ensured that the Bay began to control the game, with the ball moving out to the centres, man of the match, Oscar Astbury and Connor Harding who in turn ensured Bay wingers Adam Stroud and Rhys Thomas were able to make strong runs, in spite of brave try saving tackles by the Nant Conwy backs. Further strong forward play by the Bay especially in the maul led to Tomos Caldwell getting a well deserved try, but the Bay players then had to tackle hard themselves, to prevent Nant Conwy from scoring during a last few frantic minutes, but their commitment was enough to secure a well deserved victory and to maintain the Bays unbeaten record this season since switching to tackle rugby in October. Under 10's Tackle First game back for the Bay after the Xmas break and all the players put up a better deffence effort. Overall a better display with a good number of new players fielded, Jacob Griffith had the only try, which was disallowed by the referee. 18th December '05 COLWYN BAY UNDER 10'S Colwyn Bay 0 - Wrexham 12 The Bay's Under 10's travelled to Wrexham and played a strong U11's side. This was shown in Wrexham's ability to maintain the ball through some excellent mauling and support play. All of the Bay players will learn from the experience. COLWYN BAY UNDER 8'S TAG v WREXHAM Colwyn Bay 7 - Wrexham 6 Colwyn bay under 8s team ran in 7 tries to Wrexham's 6 tries. Anthony Marshall scored two quality tries one of which was so quick Wrexham didn't even see it coming. Billy (catch me if you can) Young scored 3 tries with some excellent foot work and side steps, and also a try from Joseph McAlnden and Tomos Cairns. This under 8's team is going from strength to strength well done everybody.

BAY UNDER 9s TACKLE TEAM v FLINT Colwyn
Bay Under 9s tackle team found themselves with a fixture change at very short
notice, due to Wrexham not being able to field an Under 9s tackle team and
therefore played Flint Rugby Club Under 10s.The Bay playing only their second
game of tackle rugby were up against a much larger pack who play together on a
weekly basis so a victory in this game would be most unlikely. However this
young team who train hard on a Tuesday night put the training into practice and
in a hard fought forwards game the young pack dominated the set pieces, mauls
and the loose play. Pack leader and new comer to the game Remy Sheil led his
forwards very well to produce good quick ball to the backs who then ran in three
tries in the first half and two more in the second half. Flint rallied in the
second half and only some tremendous try saving tackling by the Colwyn Bay backs
stopped Flint in their tracks, to produce a fantastic victory by five tries to
four. Man of the Match was Centre Oscar Astbury for his work in attack but more
importantly for his outstanding tackling in defence. COLWYN
BAY UNDER 9s TAG RUGBY v WREXHAM Colwyn
Bay Under 9s Tackle team having just beaten Flint in a physical tackle match
then reverted to their Rugby routes and played Wrexham at Tag rugby. After
adapting well to the tackle game since November to revert back to non contact
tag rugby was quite a change for these rapidly maturing rugby players. However
the skills that have been developed over the previous two years of non contact
were not forgotten with quick passing and speed from the backs the tries soon
were flowing. Wrexham put in some strong running scoring tries in the second
half and the game finished very close with Colwyn Bay winning by 8 tries to
7.Man of the Match for the Tag game was awarded to Adam Stroud for his try
scoring and his supportive play of other players in the loose. 4th December ' 05 The Bays U9 Tag Team were up against a large and well organised Afon Dee side. The side consisted of ages ranging from 7 to 10 years old. Colwyn Bay did themselves proud. We witnessed excellent quick tagging from brother and sister Sara and Ryan Davies. The majority of the game was played in the centre of the pitch with possession constantly changing after the 5th tag. Colwyn Bay captained by Jack Morris, pushed his side to equalise making it 4-4 with only 5 minutes to go. Gareth Mansfield and Adam Stroud both scoring two tries each with fantastic support from Liam Evans, Henry Fowler, Billy Young, Jack Morris and David Edwards. Big thanks to Afon Dee. Coaching staff for making us feel welcome and for making it a great day!! Final score 5-4 to Afon Dee, Man of the Match - Gareth Mansfield. 20th November ' 05 Under 8's The under 8's today put up a brave performance against a strong visiting Flint team. At half time Colwyn Bay trailed 5 tries to 2, however the second half saw a strong comeback which resulted in the final score being Flint 8 Colwyn Bay 7. Colwyn Bay scorers were Scott Kane, Billy Young, Joseff McAlinder and Rhodri Davies. Man of the match goes to Joseff McAlinder, who put up a strong performance as well as scoring two of the tries. Good work by Colwyn Bay, who will have learned a great deal from this encounter.
Under 10's On a crisp morning in ideal rugby playing conditions, Colwyn Bay under 10's welcomed Flint under 11's. After drafting in four players from under11's mixed side enjoyed a great contest in an evenly matched game, which the score line didn't reflect. Colwyn Bay opened the scoring with a quick fire double from Jacob Griffiths. Before Flint responded well with 2 good tries of their own. Ian Hilier scored a late 1st half trie, to put the home team 3-2 up at half time. After the restart Colwyn Bay then enjoyed some good forward pressure and excellent ball retention, allowing Jacob to score again for a hat trick. Ian Hilier also scored again, before Jordan Russel had two cracking individual tries to add to the scoreboard. Nial Doherty was awarded Man of the match from the flint coaches.
6th November '05 UNDER 8's 23rd October '05 Colwyn Bay Under 7's v Rhyl
Under 7's Colwyn Bay Under 10's v Rhyl
Under 10's 9th October '05 The Under 9's match fixture was rearranged at very short notice and the team ended up playing a team of 10 year olds who play tackle rugby from Llandudno. In spite of there being a substantial age difference often up to two years, the Bay under nines equipped themselves very well. Llandudno got off to a flying start and ran in a couple of quick tries which would have been even more if it was not for some great tag tackles by the team with Scott Kane and Oscar Astbury grabbing some try saving tags. Llandudno turned around at half time in a three one lead but this was reduced immediately to one try by some attacking flair by Oscar Astbury and Thomas Caldwell as the game often resembled more of a tackle match to which the Under 9s more than held their own in the cut and thrust. The Bay conceded two late tries which resulted in a six try to two victory to Llandudno with Oscar Astbury being awarded Man of the Match. However as a consequence of this performance consideration is now been given to splitting the Under 9s into two teams Tag and Tackle such as been the resilience of this team and the strength in numbers that the Bay now has at this age level. The Under 7S played their second game of the season in a last
minute fixture against Llandudno. In the first half Llandudno dominated
the game which resulted in their deserved 4 -1 lead at half time.
Colwyn Bay came back in the second half and their hard work brought the score to
Colwyn Bay 5 - Llandudno 6 in the last few minutes of the game. A try in
the last minute secured a draw putting the final score at 6 tries each. Man of
the match was Anthony Marshall who worked hard in defence and also scored an
impressive try. Another good performance for a newly formed side.
