SATURDAY
10th SEPTEMBER 2005: - COLWYN BAY 6 - NANT CONWY 21
Colwyn Bay emerged from their new changing rooms and ran onto
their new pitch,
however its was the Nant Conwy of old who gate crashed the party. A large crowd
had gathered at Brookfield Drive to watch this local derby. However rugby fans
were left disappointed as the fixture was marred by constant brawling and ill
discipline.
It appeared Nant Conwy came to the Bay with one game plan, and that was to
disrupt all Bay's efforts to play good rugby, a plan which proved successful.
The boys from the valley immediately went about disrupting Bay's set pieces
denying bay of any good ball for their talented young backs. It was Nant who was
more comfortable with the disjointed scrappy rugby, and they quickly forced a
defensive error from Bay, scoring an unconverted try by way of a charged down
kick. As the constant brawling continued both sets of players and supporters
were surprised by the lack of cards shown by the referee. A number of missed
penalty attempts just before half time also did nothing for Bay's morale.
Early in the second half the ref finally found his yellow cards, resulting in
the sin binning of Bay's hooker Sion Thomas, and Nant's flanker Gary Morris.
This briefly cooled the fighting, however this may have been due to the two main
instigators being off the pitch. Despite having the vast amount of possession
Nant were unable to create any real scoring opportunities themselves, and it was
only by two further defensive errors by Bay's young back line that Nant sealed
victory.
