SATURDAY 17th SEPTEMBER 2005: - PWLLHELI 26 - COLWYN BAY 8
Colwyn Bay travelled to Pwllheli
for their first away match of the season. The Bay had completed the
double over the Lleyn side last season and the knowledgeable crowd looked
forward to an interesting contest. Colwyn Bay started well in the
opening minutes, recycling loose ball effectively and making surging runs
using both forwards and backs. Pwllheli's defence was solid however and
the Bay were unable to threaten the Pwllheli line. Pwllheli's pack gradually
gained in confidence and were able to secure quality possession.
Pwllheli opened the scoring
after twelve minutes. Winning a lineout on the half way line fly half
Dylan Llyr popped an inside pass to centre Mike Adams. He broke through
the Bay defence and made forty metres before putting fellow centre Tryfan
Edwards in the clear. He touched down under the posts for an easy
conversion by Llyr. The Bay were stung into action and were awarded a
series of penalties before outside half Tom Duffy reduced the deficit with a
successful kick.
Both sides sparred for supremacy
but Pwllheli edged most facets of play. Despite a lot of commitment from
the Bay pack the Pwllheli pack more than held their own. On thirty
minutes Pwllheli put together another fine move, putting fullback David Lloyd
-Williams into space and his arcing run beat the cover. Though Pwllheli
pressed the Bay defence was resolute and the half time score remained at 12-3.
The second period started with
Pwllheli maintaining their hard won dominance. After two minutes Pwllheli's
backs worked an opening in the Bay defence and space was created for
Tryfan Edwards thirty metres out and he crossed for a try. The
conversion took Pwllheli 19-3 ahead. The Bay were almost let back into
the match when centre Adam Hughes charged down a clearance kick to score
an opportunist try. Pwllheli pressed but three enforced changes through
injury disrupted their rhythm. It took them up to the twenty third
minute when replacement wing Tomos Henry scored wide out on the left.
Dylan Llyr's conversion was his best kick of the match.
The quality of Pwllheli's play
points towards them being a force to be reckoned with this season.
