Bala 16 - Colwyn Bay 20

A spirited performance by Bay saw them gain three much needed league points with a hard fought victory at Bala.

Bay had a dream start when after three minutes the referee failed to spot a knock on by Bay winger Jay Beardmore and whilst Bala stood still and waited for the whistle full back Shaun McDonough raced through to touch down in the corner. The difficult conversion was missed. Bay continued to attack strongly but a penalty saw Bala reduce the arrears to 2 points just a few minutes later. The remainder of the half was very much one-way traffic with Bay continually pressing home the attack but then losing the initiative by giving away far too many penalties and Bala took the lead just before half time with a further penalty to lead 6-5 at the break.

From the restart Bay were soon on the attack and were rewarded after 5 minutes when Andy Williams-Owen was successful with a penalty after a Bala off-side for Bay to regain the lead 8-6 only to concede a silly penalty 5 minutes later for Bala to retake the lead 9-8. Bay continued to look for the win and only some desperate last-ditch tackling kept them out. Finally after several close calls on the Bala line a drive from a Colwyn bay scrum saw the evergreen Mark Earl touch down for his sixth try of the season

And put Bay back in front 13-9 the conversion being missed. Bala now began to exert some pressure as the game was going onto its final stages and were rewarded after 36 minutes with a try by their scrum half who was allowed to run in unopposed, under the posts, from a 5 metre scrum. Although the conversion appeared to go under the cross bar and neither touch flagged the referee gave the kick for Bala to retake the lead 16-13. This inspired the Bay to greater effort and within two minutes they had regained the lead 20-16 with a fine storming try by prop forward Ryan Hika and a difficult conversion slotted by Andy Williams-Owen. Bay now shut up shop for the remaining couple of minutes and ran out worthy winners in a game which in all fairness they should have had won by half time but were guilty of giving away far too many penalties which at the end of the day could have cost them dear.
