Saturday 29th October '05 - C/Bay 12 - Bala 20
Colwyn Bay snatched defeat from the jaws of
victory at home on Saturday. Early on Bala found themselves 6 points up, but as
the game settled down it was Bay controlling the game. With Bay's pack missing
the influential
Mark Earl and Sion Thomas through injury, it was key that the pack pulled
together as 8, and that they did. With strong runs from Bay's backs,
particularly Dave 'Lemon' Hocknell, and Steve Davidson taking the game deep into
Bala's half, Bay's strong pack were able to secure good field position. It was
from one of these positions that Bay's pack drove a full 20 metres for the line
with an unstoppable driving maul. Captain Dave Brown claiming the touch down.
Minutes later Bay took the lead with an almost identical try, scored again by
Man of the Match - Dave Brown. Soon after Brown was lucky to escape serious
injury when Bala's No.8 was caught stamping. As a brawl loomed, Bala's No.8 was
wisely substituted immediately after the incident.
Good scrummaging by Bay continued their hold on the game, another score by the
home team was looking imminent, however a defensive error by Bay allowed Bala to
steal a try against. With Bay now 1 point behind they
mounted a huge attack on the Bala defence. As good Bay pressure resulted in a
Bala player knocking-on near the wing, the crowd were left stunned as the
referee awarded a penalty try against Bay for an unknown offence.
This gift of 7 points late in the game to Bala was too much for Bay to turn
around, and despite Bay spending the last minutes of the game camped on the Bala
try line, the final score remained 12-20.
Colwyn Bay's squad are looking forward to the return fixture. After the game
player-coach Mark Earl praised his teams performance, and is also looking
forward the the return fixture.
