SATURDAY
3 SEPTEMBER 2005: - RHYL 8 COLWYN BAY 62
Conditions more suitable for cricket than rugby saw a
determined Bay, after a shaky start, overwhelm plucky Rhyl. From the kick off Bay took the game to Rhyl who
countered determinedly and for the first quarter neither side was able to gain
the upper hand until eventually Bay took the lead with a penalty. Following this
score Rhyl came back into the game only for Bays Chris Hughes to score following
a quickly taken tap penalty by scrum half Barry Crevetto. Adam Hughes adding the
extra points. The latter stages of the half saw Bay relax their grip a little
and allow Rhyl back into the game who were rewarded with a try just before half
time to make it 10-5 to Bay at the break. The first quarter of the second half saw Rhyl again
threatening the Bay try line but stout Bay defence restricted Rhyl’s score to
a penalty to take them within two points. This was the wake up call Bay needed
and they began to move the ball about much more freely and their open running
Rugby quickly found the gaps in the home teams defence resulting in tries for
Bryn Williams, Mark Earl, Dave Hocknell, Mike Doodson, a second for Chris Hughes
and three for outside half Tom Duffy with the ever reliable Adam Hughes
converting 6 of the 8 tries for a personal tally of 17 points. An excellent result for Bay who had several new faces in the line up all of whom gave good solid performances particularly Tom Duffy and Mike Doodson in the backs and Tom Lewis-Jones in the forwards. Ever improving scrum half Barry Crevetto had an excellent game and made some very telling kicks to find long touches and also put the Rhyl defence on the back foot. There was also an interesting combination in the front row with a Solicitor and a Cleric playing so Bay had both the Law and the Church on their side. |
