Denbigh 5 Colwyn Bay 12
The Bay were kindly invited
over by Denbigh RFC to play in a three way tournament against
Denbigh and Wooten Basset one of Wiltshire top clubs who were on
tour in North Wales. Unfortunately due to a clash of commitments
the Bay were running light on players with some of their
experienced players not being available. However two new faces
Sean Harrison playing at Full Back and Josh Jones playing at
Second Row in their first games for the club filled in admirably
and showed real potential for next year.
In the first match Wooten
Basset had played Denbigh and won comfortably by over 25 points
but for this match Denbigh had really woken up and were out to
do the double on the Bay who had lost to Denbigh 36:15 in the
Autumn. The Bay opened really strongly with some very aggressive
forward play and in particular Tom Jones (normally a winger)
played wonderfully at Flanker hitting everything that moved. The
Bay scored a super long range try from Remy Sheil who broke from
his 22m line and side stepped three tacklers to score a try
which was converted by Jordan Clemson. The Bay extended their
lead shortly before half time when Denbigh gave away a penalty
outside their 22 m area which was quickly taken by Tom Jones who
caught the defence sleeping, and went straight for the try line
on his own with no support and took two defenders with him to
score a real opportunist try. The Bay had the ball over the line
again but instead of grounding the ball right away the team
tried to get the ball nearer the posts for ease of kicking which
Denbigh stripped the ball off them and cleared their lines (a
lesson for the future here boys).
In the second half Denbigh
came out firing on all cylinders and tore into the Bay with
their large forwards dominating play which resulted in a try
after two minutes which went unconverted. For the remainder of
the half Denbigh dominated the play up front and the Bay
forwards up manfully and rucked, mauled and tackled to keep
Denbigh out in what proved to be a real battle of the “big
boys”. The Bay hung on and at the final whistle it was clearly
evident that Denbigh are now a real force in North Wales rugby
at Under 13s and again demonstrated that they are the most
improved team in North Wales at this age group.
Man of the Match Tom Jones
Winger who converted to Flanker for this match.
Wooten Basset 14 Colwyn
Bay 14
Wooten Basset are one of
Wiltshire top clubs and at this age group the team have twice
got to the Wiltshire Cup semi finals losing out to Chippenham
who are Wiltshire top regional club. The play an expansive game
with some lighting quick backs and strong forwards who rucked
wonderfully well and this was a real match for the Bay. The Bay
opened the scoring with another long range try from Remy Sheil
playing at Scrum Half again for this match and the try was
converted by Jordan Clemson. Wooten Basset hit back immediately
with some great work connecting backs and forwards for their
flying Centre Sam Fry to level the scoring in mid way through
the first half and the teams went in at half time level at
seven all. In the second half Wooten Basset came out strongly
and chasing a speculative kick which bounced nicely for their
Winger who went under the posts for a further seven points. For
the last seven minutes of the half the Bay were in the Wooten
Basset 22 m area but could not get the ball over the line due
some excellent defending by Wotten Basset forwards and backs.
However a penalty for repeatedly coming in from the side at
the maul 5 metres from the line was shipped out wide to Connah
Harding Fly Half who dived over the line for 5 points. The
difficult conversion was slotted wonderfully well again by
Jordan Clemson to square the match at 14 all. CBRFC Man of the
Match was Remy Sheil Scrum Half.
The large Wooten Basset
following of coaches and parents were very supportive of all
teams on the day and at the post match presentation both Denbigh
and Colwyn Bay were invited to play Wooten Basset at heir club.
This invitation is going to be strongly considered by CBRFC for
a venue when we tour England.

CBRFC 41 Livingston RFC 3
On a beautiful sunny
Saturday 11TH April 2010 Colwyn Bay played hosts to
the Scottish touring side Livingston RFC who are based just
outside Edinburgh and are one of Scotland’s premier clubs with a
proud and long tradition of Junior and Senior Rugby. The Colwyn
Bay side have had the pleasure of playing Livingston previously
on the 1st March 2009 when the boys are were on tour
in Scotland at a tournament hosted by Linlithgow RFC where
Colwyn Bay pipped all the locals teams in a competitive four way
tournament. Livingston had enjoyed playing against CBRFC so much
that they decided to make North Wales their tour destination for
2010 playing CBRFC and Nant Conwy on the following day.
As usual with touring teams
the quality is unknown so it makes the game even more of an
attraction to the home crowd. However Livingston RFC were (as
with all touring teams) are at a great disadvantage which is
nothing to do with the on field play and more to do with the
following e.g. lack of team sleep, midnight feasts, beds you
have to make yourself at the local Youth hostel, and adult
Coaches who think they are running the British Lions Tour, and
all of these circumstances are known to CBRFC who toured three
weeks previously in South Wales. The Bay decided to capitalise
on these off field distractions and also sent a local spy the
night before to the Conwy Youth Hostel to try to tempt the
Coaches to reveal the secrets of the resurgence of the National
Scottish rugby team and their intended Livingston tactics for
the following day. However the game plan was locked away in Jim
Baird Livingston RFC Head Coach Wallet which the other coaches
had never seen it open so there was no chance of getting any
advantage. Salacious and slanderous rumours about an Antipodean
coach being dragged away in the late hours, and having a drink
with the opposition in Conwy are totally unfounded and the best
lawyers in Scotland are being hastily employed to save this
man’s rugby coaching career!!.
Being the Easter holidays
and also playing on a Saturday the Bay only had 13 players at
its disposal so the game was going to be an open running game
and the team Captain of the day was Gareth Mansfield. Livingston
showed in the early stages good potential by forcing the Bay
back onto its 22m with some good attacking play and follow up
running to long kicks in the opening 5 minutes. The Bay soon got
into their stride and managed to run in three quick tries from
Jake Wilson Inside Centre, Luke Rawicki Winger, and Remy Sheil
this week playing at Fly Half. The forwards were not to be
outgunned with David Edwards and Jordan Clemson and Kieran
Williams playing well in the set play and in the loose and the
Bay added two further tries by Jacob Weigh to make it 29:0 after
twenty minutes. However Livingston were not going to steam
rollered and fought back gallantly and with some good field
kicking and tackling forced Bay back into their own half. A
penalty for CBRFC being off side at the ruck gave Livingston a
scoring opportunity which Graham Giles slotted a magnificent
penalty from 30 metres through the posts to make it 29 : 3 at
half time and with loud cheering from the local crowd who
applauded such great skill.
In the second half
Livingston played some good rugby and again got into the CBRFC
22m area with some good driving mauls and quick rucking and had
Colwyn Bay on the back foot. But unfortunately some knock ons,
and scoring passes were just not going to hand for Livingston
RFC on this day to increase the scoring. The Bay added late
tries from Harri Chinery Parkes, at full back and Remy Sheil to
make the score 41:3 however at no point did Livingston RFC heads
ever go down and they tackled manfully to the end and were
warmly applauded off the field by the large home crowd.
The day ended with lashings
of Chef Maxine pasta dish and plenty of orange juice to replace
the energy used on such a hot day. Livingston RFC presented
Gareth Mansfield team Captain and Jordan Clemson who was the Man
of the Match a beautiful silver engraved Scottish Quaich which
was engraved with Livingston RFC Welsh Tour 2010.It is CBRFC
intention to keep up this relationship and hopefully tour again
in later years and play against Livingston and Linlithgow when
we return to Scotland.
The Bay players today who
all played very well often in make shift positions because of
the lack of numbers were as follows: David Edwards Prop, George
Roberts Hooker, Gareth Mansfield Prop, Kieran Williams 2Nd
Row, Jordan Clemson 2nd Row, Nicholas Ingham Number 8,Scott Kane
Scrum Half, Remy Sheil Fly Half, Luke Rawicki Left Wing, Jake
Wilson Inside Centre, Jacob Weigh Outside Centre, Tom Jones
Left Wing and Harri Chinery Parkes Full Back. Man of the match
was Jordan Clemson CBRFC 2nd Row for outstanding
rucking, mauling and connecting the forwards to the backs.
Training on Tuesday at 18.30
as usual and next week away to Denbigh and Wooton Basset who are
a touring side.

First Hydro Co Under 13s Sponsored Rugby Tournament Sunday March
28th 2010
The annual sponsored junior rugby tournament by International
Power PLC First Hydro Co took place at Colwyn Bay Rugby Club
where local rugby clubs who are located near to First Hydro Co
Power Stations and who also had the relevant age grade related
rugby team, are invited to participate. The tournament also
follows the IRB Six Nations closely and as such an International
team is invited to play and this year the team selected was
Wirral Rugby Club to represent England. The participating clubs
were Caernarfon, Nant Conwy, Llandudno, Wirral, and Colwyn Bay.
Bro Ffestiniog were invited however very regrettably Bro
Ffestiniog did not turn up on the day. The tournament is on one
off day league based system where one point is awarded for
playing, two points for a draw and three for a win, and all
teams were awarded three points for the game they would have
played against Bro Ffestiniog. The tournament is in now in its
fifth year now and previous winners have been Colwyn Bay twice,
Caernarfon ,Llandudno so this year Nant Conwy were on a mission
to win and win well.
The day produced some excellent rugby from all teams with the
Wirral, Llandudno and Caernarfon using their large forwards to
play some power forward play. Colwyn Bay and Nant Conwy were the
smaller teams in stature and were relying on open back play
which as can be seen by the results below Nant perfected it
better on the day and their rugby was backed up with some very
positive rucking and mauling which gave them the edge on the day
past Llandudno the current trophy holders. As seen below from
the scores and league table it was mission accomplished by Nant
Conwy playing some fine rugby throughout the tournament from the
beginning to the end.

played for Wales aged 18 years of age. The quality of the rugby
was only surpassed by the fair play extended by all teams who

Rydal 7's
The Under 13s were invited
by Rydal Penrhos School to play in their prestigious Rugby
sevens competition now in its twentieth year. This was a honour
for the Bay as they were the only rugby club from North Wales to
be invited to play against many of the top independent schools
from the North West of England namely Wirral GS, Manchester GS,
Arnolds School Blackpool, St Anselms College The Wirral,
Birkenhead School, Merchant Taylors Liverpool ,St Ambrose in
Hale Barns, Stockport GS and of course Rydal Penrhos the hosts
.Most of these schools play rugby sevens on a regular basis
where as the Bay this was our first venture in to this format
with only 12 allowed in the squad, halves of only 6 minutes each
way, and a one minute half time break, this was no place for the
faint hearted.
In the first game the Bay
made a shock entry into the tournament beating the highly
fancied Merchant Taylors School from Liverpool 19:14 with the
last play of the game which was a big surprise to the Merchant
Taylors staff. In the second game the Bay came up St Ambrose
College who have a long tradition of playing rugby sevens and
St Ambrose ran into a healthy 21:0 lead in the first half. The
Bay fought back valiantly in the second half to go down 26:12
with St Ambrose hanging on in the last five minutes where the
Bay could not turn possession into points. In the third game the
Bay came up against a well organised Stockport grammar School
who were on course to win the group and lost 35: 7 which left
the Bay needing to win the next game to progress to the semi
final stage. The last game was against Rydal Penrhos and in
spite of the score being 26 nil to the Bay the score line does
not show how close the game was, with Rydal Penrhos led by
Jordan Edwards of CBRFC playing for his school giving his Bay
Sunday team mates a hard time up front. Fortunately the Bay pace
on the wings managed to keep ahead and the Bay won 26 nil to go
through to the semi finals.
In the semi finals the Bay
played the runners up in the other group who were the highly
fancied Arnold School s College from Blackpool who are again a
strong rugby playing tradition .The Bay conceded two early
converted tries but in the second half came back strongly
playing the rugby that usually is shown on a Sunday. However
Arnold scored two further tries in the dying minutes run out 26:
7 winners and progress through to the final.
This was a magnificent
effort by the Under 13s who had never played sevens before and
no other CBRFC team in previous years going this far in the
competition. Our thanks are extended to Mr Mike Leach Sports
Department in Rydal Penrhos for the invitation and hopefully the
performance that we put in this year will earn us an invitation
next year to the Under 14s competition.
The players who represented
the club are Scott Kane, Connah Harding, Matty Humphries, Remy
Sheil, George Roberts, Jordan Clemson, Jacob Weigh, Tom Jones,
Oscar Astbury, Harri Chinery Parkes, Jake Wilson, Luke Rawickii,
with Jordan Edwards who would have been in the squad from CBRFC
playing for Rydal Penrhos.
Manchester Grammar won the overall completion

Rhyl 31
Colwyn Bay 0
Sunday 28th
February 2010 was a date for the regional rugby matches and the
Bay were due to have a training day however a late call to
Caernarfon managed to secure a three way match against away to
Caernarfon and Rhyl playing at the Caernarfon Secondary School..
Although the Bay had only 13 players on the day and were missing
10 players due to regional training and absences and Caernarfon
too were also running light on players, both teams gave very
commendable displays against a full strength Rhyl team whose
possessed large and talented running players.
However
today was a great opportunity for two new boys to show their
skills and Daniel Rhys Lloyd Prop was playing his first full
game for the club and Olly Wood Winger was playing his first
full start. The Bay went behind quickly through some initial
weak tackling and some fast back play by the Rhyl backs and were
21:0 at half time. The score could have been a lot bigger
however the Bay backs got stuck in and another great performance
by Jake Wilson got him Man of the Match for tackling everything
that moved in the second half. Great support play by Jacob Weigh
playing in the backs and George Roberts Hooker covering every
blade of grass on the very large pitch earned them additional
points towards the player of the year.
Caernarfon 21 Colwyn Bay 7
In the
second game against Caernarfon the Bay were now down to 12
players however the teams were more evenly matched in size and
ability. Caernarfon got off to a quick start scoring straight
from the drop out under the posts by their flying winger which
was well converted. The Bay hit back straight away and were over
the try line for a try but the ball got knocked forward at the
moment of scoring to which Caernarfon picked up the ball and ran
the length of the pitch and should of scored if it was not for
Olly Wood Winger who gave his opposite number a 20 metre head
start and never gave up the chase and hauling him down in the 5
metre zone. The Bay then played some great forward rugby and the
pack namely Daniel Rhys Lloyd, David Edwards, , Jamie Owen,
Jordan Clemson, Jordan Edwards, Kurt Taylor Williams, and
Nicholas Ingham were rucking and mauling in unison that the
absent Head Coach Aiden Sheil would of been proud of if he was
there on the touch line. The Bay equalised through a great
driving maul which was turned into a ruck to which Jordan
Clemson picked up and went three metres from the line and David
Edwards had a pick another “pick and go” and got the well
deserved forwards try which was converted by Jordan Clemson.
Caernarvon again hit back with some great back play and one
missed tackle by the Bay meant that the Bay were back under
their posts conceding a further seven points against the run of
play. The Bay backs found the Caernarvon backs a handful but a
variety of play by Scrum Half Scott Kane sniping away at the
base of the scrum and Fly Half Harri Chinery Parkes with some
tactical kicking gave opportunities for the Bay backs Luke
Rawicki and Olly Wood and Jacob Weigh now playing in the backs
again to run onto, but today the bounce of the ball was not in
the Bay favour, and they conceded a late try in the final play
to make the score 21:7 to a well organised Caernarfon side.
Man of
the Match Olly Wood for some great attacking play and saving a
certain try and extra seasonal effort points go to new boy Jacob
Clemson
and “seasoned”
front row veteran David Edwards.
Sponsored Walk Tour Fundraiser Saturday 20th February 2010
The Under 13s tour fund
raiser sponsored walk took place today for those players who
were unable to attend the Christmas bag packing and raise money
for the tour to South Wales. As it turned it was as much as a
ski and winter sports day than a walk as overnight three inches
of snow fell on the route which added to the fun. The walk was
designed to add to the fitness of the players with a challenging
four mile walk cross country over undulating terrain and the
route started at the club and meandered via Glanwydden,
Cilmeityn, Bodysgallen Hall Hotel, the Obelisk, Pabo and back to
the club house in the Bay.
As the snow was quite
deep the boys namely Jordan Clemson, Gareth Mansfield, Adam
Smith, Jordan Edwards, Jake Wilson and Nicholas Ingham soon
resorted to the traditional winter rugby tactics like snow
rucking, snow mauling, snow ball scrums, and line out with a
snow ball. This was followed after lunch with a six man rolling
snow maul, where the group started at the top of the Obelisk
field and rolled all the way (the maul was now very much a
rolling ruck) to the bottom of the steep hill.
The group finished at the
club house some three hours later having had a great time as
well as raising valuable funds for the trip to South Wales which
commences on the 19th March 2010 playing at Newport, Penarth,
and Brecon and taking in the Wales v Italy International game.
Thanks to all those
players and parents who have bag packed, under taken the
sponsored walk, or made a financial donation to the tour fund
and can all players who went on the walk please make their
payments by 28th February 2010.

Colwyn Bay 10 Llandudno
35
The score in this game does
not represent a fair reflection of the play in this local derby
against Llandudno RFC who if not the strongest team in North
Wales are certainly physically the biggest pack that the Bay
boys have come up against. For the first 17 minutes of the game
there was no score and Bay had the best of the possession but
could not turn it into points due to some excellent defending by
Llandudno and particularly their back row and talisman Alwyn who
was working ovetime. However a loose kick from the Bay was
picked up by the Llandudno wing Ryan who went 45 metres and past
some poor tackling to score under the posts. Making that
mistake once was bad enough but to repeat straight from the
restart where Llandudno Centre Mickey Murray picked the ball up
and again aided with weak tackling on the Wings the Bay had now
shipped 14 points in two minutes. A further loose defensive kick
from behind the try line was picked off by Ryan the Llandudno
wing for a straight run in to make the score 21:0 at half time
with all tries being very well converted from long range field
positions.
In the second half the Bay
hit back immediately with a long range individual try from No 8
Remy Sheil who went through some infectious weak tackling (now
on the Llandudno side) to make the score 21:5 which was
unconverted. The Bay now started to play some attacking and
running rugby and a break out by Scott Kane Scrum Half from his
22 to the Llandudno 10 metre line gave the Bay the required
field possession which resulted subsequent with penalty for
offside 10 metres from the line. From this penalty the Bay drove
forward and Jordan Edwards playing in the Front Row peeled off
to get a great forwards try to get the Bay back in the game at
21:10.However in the last five minutes some poor handling and
defensive kicking from the Bay let Llandudno take hold of the
game once more with Alwyn Back Row for Llandudno scoring a try
and Llandudno Winger Ryan getting his hat trick of tries in the
last play to finish the match.
The Bay should have got more
out of this match but some basic errors to be worked on a and a
refresh of the Laws on Tuesday night should cure this. However
the game sets the return match up nicely when Llandudno return
on Sunday 28th March 2010 as guests of Colwyn Bay RFC
in the sponsored tournament by First Hydro Co for clubs located
near their power stations in North Wales which is now in its
fifth year.
The Bay player of the match
was Jordan Edwards for fronting up to the big Llandudno pack and
additional player of the year points go to Remy Sheil Number 8
and Scott Kane Scrum Half for taking the game to Llandudno with
running rugby when all appeared lost.

Colwyn Bay Under 13s
17 North West Wales Regional Under 12s Team 17
This fixture was requested
by the management team of North West Wales Regional Under 12s to
give the players a good test before meeting the Swansea region
next Wednesday in Newtown. The fixture was played on a chilly
Friday night but the quality of the rugby from both sides warmed
the large and appreciative crowd who had gathered at Brookfield
Drive under the new floodlights. The game was also an excellent
opportunity for the Bay to test their three new starters who
joined in December and Jordan, Olly, and Dan who all equipped
themselves very well against quality opposition.
The North West Wales
Regional Team is the team compiled from the region so that the
very best talent from Llandudno, Bangor, Caernarfon, Pwllheli,
Bethesda, Llangefni, and play as a unit .The quality of the
rugby and stature of the players of the visitors made playing up
a year (all with parental and coach consent) relatively easy, so
there was no mismatch as the score above revealed.
The Bay got off to a good
start with a try within 5 minutes after some slick passing and
a line break to score in the corner for an unconverted try which
appeared to galanise the NWW players. NWW hit back immediately
with strong forward play combining nicely with a driving maul
drove the ball up the park for Morgan Owen from Bethesda RFC to
drive over for a try which was converted by Emur Court from
Nant. NWW again playing some good rugby broke through the Bay
covering defence on the half way line and their robust forward
Morgan Owen Bethesda RFC went over for a try aided by some
missed tackles by the Bay to make the score 5:12 at half time
with NWW very much in the ascendency.
In the second half NWW
forwards executing some competitive counrer rucking and rolling
mauls took hold of the match and the Boys from the Bay new they
were in the game of the season. Many a team would have wilted
under such pressure however the Bay Under 13s winger and flying
machine Oscar Astbury had other ideas, and poached an
interception try running 50 metres to put the Bay back in the
match. Harri Parkes Full Back converted the kick and it was all
to play for with fifteen ten minutes to go .NWW again supporting
each other very well in broken play broke through the Bay line
to score a team try which was credited to Sam Hughes from
Llandudno RFC. In the last five minutes the Bay eventually woke
up and played some great forwards and backs team rugby which saw
Luke Rawickii Winger go over in the corner to get a try to even
the scores with an unconverted try.
A draw is a rare occurence
in Rugby Union but this was a fair result played by two
excellent teams. The Bay Under 13s Management and Coaches wish
the NWW regional boys all the best for their fixture against
Swansea and if the play with the committment and team spirit as
they did tonight the boys from West Wales will be in for tough
test. The referee” men of the match” for this fixture are Morgan
Owen Bethesda RFC for outstanding play in the tight and the
loose and Oscar Astbury Winger Colwyn Bay for excellent defence
and attacking running rugby.
The list of names at the
bottom of this report represents the the boys from North West
Wales who fought their way through the seelction system and
qualified to play in this match. Of these players below 23 were
selected after the match by Vaughan Williams NWW Regional Head
Coach and the other NWW Coaches will go onwards to play Swansea
and we wish you well.
Thanks are extended to the
CBRFC Fixtures Secretary Penny Broadway for arranging this match
at short notice and to the CBRFC Steward Dave Jones for
arranging the facilities and accommodating the teams again with
short notice without interfering with a pre existing CBRFC
Hospitality event that was occurring in the club house.

Colwyn Bay 12 Nant Conwy
25
Colwyn Bay welcomed the boys
from the Conwy Valley in what was to be the most pulsating game
of rugby his season at Brookfield Road in a game which from the
start to the finish ebbed and flowed like the Conwy river.
Nant played the most
positive rugby from first referees whistle and pinned Colwyn Bay
back in their 22m for the first 7 minutes which resulted in a
score for the flying the Nant Winger who rounded the stretched
Bay defensive cover to score in the corner for an unconverted
try. Further pressure for Nant resulted in some dogged defence
by the Bay whose backs did not miss a tackle all day and kept
the Nant backs from crossing their line on many more occasions.
The Bay finally broke out from their own half and a great run
for the Bay backs from their 10 m line resulted in Remy Sheil
number 8 giving good support play to go over in the corner for
an unconverted try. The Bay were now back in the match and
further pressure in the 22m area resulted in the ball being
thrown back over the line by Nant and Jake Wilson Centre
following up and getting the touchdown which Harri Chinnery Parkes
converted to make it 12 :5 .Nant again came straight back at the
Bay and a good forwards maul saw the Nant hooker peel off and
get a good forwards try to go in 12:10 at half time.
In the second half the Bay
forwards were in ascendency with some fabulous driving mauls led
by Jacob Weigh Flanker and Kieran Williams. Whilst the Bay
mauled well this was countered by Nant by some very effective
rucking and the ball was in the possession of the boys in
green. From one of these quick rucks the ball was sent out wide
and a speculative kick from the Nant Centre was followed up by
another fly hack kick which bounced off the bottom of the post
to be pounced upon by the Nant support players for a further
unconverted try. This try was quickly followed up by a very good
flowing move where the whole back line of Nant were involved to
which their winger scored in the corner. Many teams would have
wilted under this pressure and conceded more points but the Bay
boys held out until the last minute when the Nant scored a
further try to put more of a gloss on the score in the last
period of play.
This was an outstanding game
of rugby by two sets of boys who played the game with great
spirit and discipline. Indeed if both teams were in the same
regional set up (which unfortunately they are not)they would be
a match for any regional team in Wales at his age.
The Bay Man of the Match was
Jake Wilson Centre for his outstanding tackling of the Nant
backs and additional seasonal points go to Jacob Weigh Flanker
for his outstanding forward play.

CBRFC Under 13s 55
Glyn Ceiriog Under 13s 5
After a month off due to
frozen pitches, flooded pitches, and the festive break the Under
13s got back into action playing Glyn Ceiriog RFC who are a
small village team near Wrexham. Glyn Ceiriog RFC are a new club
and this team had only played for one season and was a mixture
of Under 13s and Under 12s but unfortunately Glyn Ceiriog were
also missing a couple of their more experienced players on the
day. The Bay sportingly gave Glyn Ceiriog some of their best
forwards namely Jamie Owen and Kurt Taylor Williams who played
well in the flanker positions for the first half for the Glyn
Ceiriog team so as to have 15 a side on the pitch. Not only was
this a notable day for the first visit by Glyn Ceiriog to Colwyn
Bay but also today was the debut of two new players for the Bay
who joined in December from playing football namely Olly Wood
Right Winger and Jordan Clemson Second Row which is a sporting
milestone in a rugby players lifetime.
Glyn Ceiriog played very
well in the opening stages with some robust forward play and the
Bay boys of Kurt Taylor Williams and Jamie Owen putting in some
big hits on their team mates .A spilled ball resulted in an
attacking scrum for the Bay on the half way line to which had a
chance to do one of their rehearsed moves. From the resulting
scrum Scott Kane went blind side and then flipped the ball to
Connah Harding who sent the ball through the hands of all the
supporting backs namely Matty Humphries, Jake Wilson, Harri
Chinnery Parkes and finally to Olly Wood who on his first game
for the club ran in a try from 30 metres side stepping all the
defensive cover to score on his debut under the posts which
Harri Chinnery Parkes Fullback subsequently converted. From the
restart the Bay forwards were not to be out done by the flying
backs and a driving maul forced Glyn Ceiriog back into their
twenty two to which Jacob Weigh Flanker peeled off to get a try
which was again converted. A further quick forward try was added
to by Remy Sheil playing at number 8 who broke through some
weak tackling to add a further converted try which was quickly
followed by a further try from Centre Jake Wilson who ran in a
long range try to make it 26 nil at half time.
Many club teams in the
second half would have put off by this forward power play by the
Bay whose large squad of forwards comprising of Jordan Edwards
Hooker, David Edwards Prop, Kieran Williams Prop, Adam Smith
Second Row, Nicholas Ingham Second Row, Gareth Mansfield
Flanker, Kurt Taylor Williams Prop, Jamie Owen Second Row,
Prop, Remy Sheil Number 8, Jacob Weigh Flanker and new boy
Jordan Clemson second row, dominated the set pieces and the
loose play. However Glyn Ceiriog had not just come up for
pleasant bus ride and put up some tremendous fighting spirit in
the second half .Glyn Ceiriog scored a great try after some long
term pressure on the Bay line with backs and forwards working
together to drive their flanker over the line for a well
deserved try which unfortunately went unconverted .Glyn Ceiriog
continually maintained a good pressure in the Bay 22m area and
were unfortunate not to score more points but good defensive by
the Bay backs kept the score to just one try. A quick breakaway
by Luke Rawicki Winger and great positional kicking by Harri
Chinnery Parkes set up tries and for Oscar Asbury Wing and
Centre Matty Humphries extended the unassailable lead. However
again Glyn Ceiriog came back into the match with some good
driving mauls and quick rucking which deserved some more points
but they could not get the points they justly deserved.
In the closing minutes the
Bay scored two very different tries which were both very
notable. The try by winger Tom Jones was created from a scrum
where Scott Kane Scrum Half flipped the ball blind and wide to
touch line Tom Jones who with dancing feet side stepped the Glyn
Ceiriog defence and was driven over for the try by the forwards.
The try of the day came in the last play when Adam Smith Second
Row who had played superbly well for 41 minutes got the ball
from the restart on his 10 metre line and went up the park.
Fending off tacklers from the forwards and the backs he dashed
for the line and scored under the posts in a shortened second
half to end the game.
In the week that we lament the passing away of
the great Scottish rugby commentator from the BBC Mr Bill
McClaren it is fitting to insert how Bill McLaren would have
described Adam Smith try if he was there today commentating
which would have gone something like this:
“the
big Welsh laddie from the boiler hoose of the Colwyn Bay Scrum
who looks like he is built from pure Welsh Granite has got the
ball from the restart under his arm and he is away on a
bullocking run up the park. His backs are try to keep up with
him but there is no stopping this big laddie, he is like a
runaway express train and I tell you I am glad I am up here in
the commentary box and don’t have to try to stop him. As he
touches down for a great try under the post and I tell ye he is
not even oot of puff”.
Although the score appears
one sided credit should be given to Glyn Ceiriog for never
giving up on the game and the large crowd of spectators who
welcomed them to Brookfield Drive could see they were well
coached and have great potential . The Bay look forward to the
return game at Glyn Ceiriog where we will take a mixed team of
Under 12s and under 13s to play them at Glyn Ceiriog and the
club is a welcome addition to the Rugby Union Junior Set up in
North Wales. The CBRFC Player of the Season points of nine per
man are awarded to Jamie Owen and Kurt Taylor Williams for
sportingly playing for the opposition and also to Oliver Wood
and Jordan Clemson who played superbly well on their debut. The
Man of the Match is Adam Smith who played superbly in the scrum
and line out scoring a magnificent try in the last period of
play and gets 10 points on his total.
Next match away to Wirral
RFC all players to be at the club for 09.00am and training is at
the club on Tuesday night at 18.30 prompt.

Llangefni 17 Colwyn
Bay 24
The Under 13s were due
to play Oswestry RFC but Oswestry pulled out on Thursday and
with the Brookfield Drive field not being playable it look
as like the Under 13s were going to have no match or
training this weekend. However the ever dependable Penny
Broadway CBRFC Fixture Secretary again “pulled the rugby
rabbit out of the hat” and got the Under 13s a game against
Llangefni away which was a real bonus. Although missing
eight players due to injuries, illness and the seasonal
reindeer run, the Bay could only field 13 players which
opened up the field for a good game of running rugby. It
should also be recorded and missing for the first time in
living memory was Head Coach for CBRFC Under 13s Aiden Sheil
who is sitting his rugby coaching exams but his big voice
will be back on the touch line in January 2010.
Llangefni are another
club at this age group who have made great progress in the
season and from the opening exchanges it was clear to see
that Alwyn the new coach and Pat the match referee had put
in a lot of work with this team which paid off. Llangefni
had two very large and competent ball carrying forwards
Billy and David who made big yardages up the middle of the
field which the Bay failed to stop in the early exchanges
and this resulted in a early try after three minutes to take
Llangefni up to 7:0.The Bay finally woke up after 15 minutes
of play with Remy Sheil making a break from a ruck in the
Llangefni half and some weak Llangefni tackling ensured he
got over for his try to go unconverted and make the score
5:5.The Bay forwards then took the game to Llangefni and
great forward play by the six Bay forwards Props David
Edwards and Kurt Taylor Wright Captain on the day, Hooker
Jordan Edwards, second rows Adam Smith & Kieran Williams and
number 8 Jacob Weigh rumbled the ball up the field in in a
great driving maul and over the try line. The ball was held
up over the line and from the resulting scrum Remy Sheil who
normally plays number and had replaced the absent and
injured Scott Kane went over for a try taking two players
with him for a great try which was converted to make the
score 5:12.Llangefni from the kick off were determined to go
back up the pitch and a break away try from Billy their
second row aided by some missed tackles in the forwards
allowed Llangefni to get back into the game and at half time
whistle the score was very tight at 10:12 to the Bay.
If the second half the
Bay really came alive and the backs really began to fire in
attack and also in defence. The Bay backs time and again
defended bravely with some great tackling by Remy Sheil,
Connah Harding Fly Half, Jake Wilson Inside Centre, Luke
Rawicki (playing at Outside Centre for the first time), Tom
Jones Right Winger, Gareth Mansfield Left Winger, and Harri
Chinery Parkes at Fullback. It was this defensive tackling
which won the game for the Bay as Llangefni knew that could
not breach this Bay back line and it was from one of these
resulting superb man and ball tackle by Jake Wilson deep
within the Bay half where Llangefni were penalised for not
realising that resulted in the game best try of the day.
From the resulting tap penalty Remy Sheil got the ball to
Connah Harding who on his 10 metre line side stepped the
whole Llangefni back line and in spite of the Llangefni
forwards trying to haul him down 10 metres from the line he
stayed on his feet to break the two tacklers and went under
the posts for a superb try of the day. The conversion was
successfully put over by Harri Parkes to make the score 10
:19. The Bay again from the restart got possession and some
good forward play again set up a good field position.
However from a counter driving maul by Llangefni, Jordan
Edwards Prop cunningly stripped the ball from the big
Llangefni forwards to release Remy Sheil to get his hat
trick of tries to make the score 10:24 with two minutes to
play. Llangefni however never gave up and scored a forwards
try at the final whistle to end a very competitive game of
rugby.
The Bay won this match
by ensuring that the line was very rarely breached and the
Man of the Match award is made on the basis of solid
tackling and that goes to Jake Wilson Centre for two great
hits which stopped the large Llangefni forwards in their
track. Additional seasonal points for extra effort go to
Connah Harding, Jordan Edwards, David Edwards and Remy
Sheil .
There is training on
Tuesday and watch the web for its location and there will be
no game next Sunday for the Under 13s due to the seasonal
break and regional rugby day.

Rhyl 12 Colwyn Bay 29
After a three week
layoff due to weather affected pitches at Rydal, and Colwyn
Bay the Under 13s could not wait to get back on the pitch
and the trip to local rivals Rhyl is an eagerly awaited
fixture against a rapidly improving Rhyl team. The Bay were
missing key players Adam Stroud, Andrew McMullen, Callum
Teasdale, George Roberts, Jack Morris, Kurt Taylor Williams,
Kieran Williams, Nicholas Ingham, Tom Caldwell, and Will
Murphy due to illness and injury but managed to get 13
players together which were matched by Rhyl and what proved
to be a very entertaining match of 13 a side running rugby.
The Bay got off to a
flying start with strong forward domination which Bay were
in the Rhyl 22 for most of the first ten minutes. The Bay
got a scrum 10 metres out and Scott Kane at Scrum Half made
a scintillating break from the scrum to go over for great
individual try in front of the post which Harri Chinery
Parkes playing at full back converted. The Bay continued to
dominate the first half and only determined forward play
from the Rhyl pack who showed outstanding break down and
rucking play stopped the Bay scoring more points. However a
line break by Matty Humphries at Centre from the middle of
the park got the ball to Jake Wilson who injected great pace
and slipped the ball to Luke Rawicki Winger who showed great
speed and determination to score in the corner for the Bay
to go in to in at half time Rhyl 0:Bay 12.
At the very start of the
second half the Bay got a break out when Connah Harding Fly
Half made a line break and shipped the ball to Harri Chinery
Parkes who when tackled made a superb pass out of a double
the tackle to get Tom Jones Left Wing to go over in the
corner to make it 0:17.It should be noted that at this point
of the match the very sporting and large home crowd of Rhyl
parents watching this match broke out into spontaneous round
of applause in recognition of great quality rugby being
played by both sides.
After conceding this try
from Tom Jones this seemed to galvanise Rhyl in to a great
fight back with some great forward play which gave them the
field position for Ben Shepherd Centre to run in a superb
solo try breaking three tackles from his half way line to
make the score 7:17 . The Bay knew they were in a good game
of rugby and managed to work the ball up the field through
good mauling by the forwards David Edwards, Gareth
Mansfield, Jamie Owen, Jacob Weigh, Adam Smith and Remy
Sheil to get a line out 8 metres from the line. A throw by
hooker Gareth Mansfield was taking spectacularly off the top
of the line by Adam Smith and when landing from a great
height made a dash for the line and scored a great
individual second row try in spite of great Rhyl tackling to
make it 7 :22. Such was the ebb and flow of the match Rhyl
were again in the Bay half and after a penalty for offside
the Rhyl Scrum Half Alex again shipped the ball quickly
through the hands of the Rhyl backs Morgan, Ewan and Paul to
set up another a great team try for Ben Shepherd and at
22:12 Rhyl were again back in the match. The Rhyl forwards
again played good pack rugby and again good quality rucking
rugby at the break down meant that Bay were defending their
line for long periods of play, with the Bay backs led by
Connah “the Hitman” Harding and flanker Jacob Weigh stopping
great attacking play by the Rhyl backs.
Towards the end of the
match the Bay backs got more possession and the quick hands
from Scott Kane, to Connah Harding to Jake Wilson got the
ball to Matty Humphries who powered over the line at the
final whistle which was converted by Tom Jones. All in all
this was a class game of rugby on a heavy pitch where both
teams played good quality rugby. The Bay coaches recommend
that the North East Regional Coaches attend Rhyl more often
to see the talent on show at this club in this emerging
Under 13 team.
Man of the Match Harri
Chinery Parkes playing for the first time at full back and
all other players get nine points to their season playing
points total for outstanding team play.

Colwyn Bay 20 King
William School lsle of Man 5
Colwyn Bay received and
invitation from close sporting neighbours Llandudno RFC to play
in a three way match against one of the Isle of Man leading
private schools King William School (KWS) who were on a school
tour. This invitation was warmly welcomed as with WRU Regional
Rugby affecting the last Sunday in the month the more games that
CBRFC can get in the calendar month, the better. Unfortunately
with CBRFC Under 13 injury list, illness, and also being
remembrance Sunday CBRFC could only turn out 14 players but
those players gave there all in a very sporting junior rugby day
out. It should be noted that both Llandudno and KWS sportingly
loaned CBRFC players to make up the teams to 15 a side.
KWS started strongly with
their large forwards gaining good ground but strong defence by
the Bay stopped them entering the 22m area in the early
exchanges. From a knock on by KWS the Bay shipped the ball
quickly down the line for Matty Humphries to score a try in the
corner which went unconverted. The Bay straight from the restart
made good ground again with Jake Wilson excelling in the backs
with his direct and straight running which the opposition found
hard to cope with. Jake Wilson off loaded well in the tackle to
get the pass away for Remy Sheil to score in the corner. KWS hit
straight back with some very powerful and “loud” forward play
which appeared to intimidate the Bay, who stood off the tackler
to allow KWS to score a good forwards try. At 10 :5 there was
everything to play for and with great attacking play by CBRFC
backs and good defensive tackling by the Jacob Weigh and Callum
Teasdale both playing at flankers, the ball was again moved wide
to allow Matty Humphries to get a second try again in the
corner. The Bay finished the match with a try from Centre Connah
Harding to make the score a respectable 20:5 against a very
committed and sporting school team.
CBRFC Man of the March Jake
Wilson for great attacking play and setting up his team mates
for their tries.
Llandudno 12 Colwyn Bay
0
The second match was the
scheduled fixture between these very good sides at this age
group which is always an eagerly awaited fixture in the season.
The Bay dominated the early exchanges and were in the Llandudno
half for long periods of play but could not turn possession
into points. The Bay forwards played well with Callum Teasdale
playing in his first game after a long spell off with an injury
in the thick of it, making some strong runs against his former
club but only outstanding defensive play by all the Llandudno
play kept the Bay out. The longer the game went on the stronger
Llandudno RFC became and Mickey Murray at Centre scored an
opportunist long range try under the posts which was converted
by Llandudno. The Bay defended gallantly for the remainder of
the match and in the last two minutes conceded a try to the
Llandudno flyer Harpin in the corner after some missed tackles
by the Bay.
CBRFC Man of the Match
Callum Teasdale Flanker for outstanding play in the loose and
great defence.
A great day junior rugby was
had by all and the games were stopped at 11.00am with players
standing exactly where they were located on the pitch to pay a
respectful silence to those who have given so much for this
country.
Next game against Rydal
School on Saturday 14th November 2009 meet at 09:15am
at Rydal fields. A mixed team will be played from CBRFC Under
13s and CBRFC Under 12s against Rydal Under 13s so as to develop
players in different positions and have a balanced game. All
Rydal boys in CBRFC must play for their school.
Sunday 18th October 2009
Wrexham 48 Colwyn Bay 7
Colwyn Bay went down to heavy
defeat against a much physically bigger and superior Wrexham team
containing many players from the regional North East Wales team on
the day. The Bay with only 15 players available missing today
started badly and let in four quick tries to some missed tackles and
two break away moves by the large Wrexham pack. The Bay fought
valiantly but at half time the score was 30 nil and the Bay were
looking at a very heavy loss especially after further injuries to
Prop Forward and ball carrier Jordan Edwards after 10 minutes.
However the second half saw a complete turnaround in fortunes and
the Bay were camped in the Wrexham half for most of the period but
could not get the ball over the line just to make the score more
respectable. Mid way through the second half a reverse pass by
centre Matty Humphries to Fly Half Centre Connah Harding saw a
searing break from inside the Bay half which would have lead to
fantastic try. However Connah Harding was high tackled by the
chasing Wrexham players and the referee quite rightly awarded a
penalty try which winger Tom Jones converted. Wrexham came right
back at the Bay and scored another quick breakaway try and this was
followed by two late scores to make the second half winning margin
bigger than deserved.
To sum up this match this was a
forwards game and Bay missing by physically big pack members such
as Adam Smith, David Edwards, Callum Teasdale, Nicholas Ingham, Kurt
Taylor Williams and Will Murphy through illness and injuries this
was always going to be a tough away fixture. However it must be
recorded that the Wrexham coaches who coach the regional team as
well at the end of game came over and commended the Bay players for
never giving up and playing to the end with great spirit.
Man of the Match Flay Half
Inside/Centre Connah Harding for the never say die spirit and
tackling everything that moved.
Sunday 11th October 2009
Denbigh 36 Colwyn Bay 15
Today’s match should have been
against Ruthin away however at this Under 13 age group the Ruthin
team has folded and a training session was on the cards. However a
late in the week contact was made with Denbigh RFC and a game was
hastily arranged at Denbigh. Colwyn Bay arrived but were very short
on numbers today missing 11 players from the squad of 23 players
team with injuries or sickness however Denbigh sportingly gave four
of their players to make up the numbers for the Bay team so a game
could commence. The Denbigh players were recent converts from
football and showed real rugby promise for the season and as seen
the result shows that Denbigh are the most improved team in North
Wales at this age group. It should be noted that this Denbigh age
group team has only been together at this age group for less than
one year and credit is certainly to the junior coaches at Denbigh in
getting the team together and infusing the recent ex Under 13 Bala
RFC players
Denbigh got off to a flying
start and raced away to a 21 nil lead with three converted tries
from Pat, Tomo and Miall in less than 15 minutes due to some very
poor tackling by the Bay. Denbigh had a total control and their
forwards dominated the first half turning around at half time with
no points conceded. The Bay only woke up just after half time with a
try from centre Matty Humphries and this was followed by a long
range effort from Tomos Caldwell playing in one of four different
positions and a fight back was on the cards. However Denbigh could
smell their first victory over Colwyn Bay at this age group and
further tries were added in the second half by Thomas and Pat with
Colwyn Bay adding a late try from James who normally plays for
Denbigh who showed his team mates a clean pair of heals from 40
yards out.
The Bay man of the match was
Matty Humphries who played at Centre, Fly Half and anywhere in the
back line to try to plug the gaps with his tough tackling.
Additional seasonal points to Connah Harding usually a fly half, who
ended up on the back row!!

Colwyn Bay Under 13s 32
Flint Under 13s 0
The Bay this week welcomed Flint
Under 13s and as sports followers l know Flint traditionally are a
football town producing great footballers players such as Ian Rush
for Liverpool and Wales and hence are probably not the strongest
rugby club in North Wales. In previous years this fixture has been
somewhat one sided however this year the score does not reflect the
effort that this much improved Flint team made to keep the score to
a respectable level. The Bay team management also took game as a
further opportunity to give an extended run out to some of the newer
players who have joined the club such as Jamie Owen at Second Row
who is showing great talent and ball handling skills. Additionally
many players were swapped around to get more experience at different
positions which is all part of their development which gives the
team the strength in depth in preparation for some very tough games
later in the season against Nant Conwy, Caernarfon, and Llandudno.
Today’s game was referred by Tony Lumby who rolled back the years
and kept up with the fast and flowing Under 13s backs just as he did
when he was a Number 8 for Colwyn Bay !!!
The Bay playing into a strong
wind got off to a flying start and after a big forwards maul saw
David Edwards Prop peel off the back off the maul to score a try in
the corner which went unconverted .The Bay then added another quick
try when a fast moving backs moved the ball down the whole back line
to Tom Jones Left Winger who beat two men to score in the corner
for another unconverted try. A third try was quickly added when Remy
Sheil picked up a loose ball and went half the length of the pitch
aided by some weak tackling by Flint for a try in the corner for the
score to be 15 nil within 15 minutes. At this point Flint woke up
and started to play some good forwards rugby with their hooker
playing a great game in the loose against George Roberts Hooker who
was giving his all to contain this talented Flint player. The Bay
turned around at half time at 15:Nil.
In the second half the Bay
dominated the match and should have scored more points but dogged
defending by the Flint backs and specifically their winger Jack kept
the score down. The Bay forwards combination of David Edwards,
George Roberts, Kieran Williams, Nicholas Ingham, Jamie Owen, Jacob
Trotter, Remy Sheil and Jack Morris were to powerful for Flint in
maul but in the rucks Flint competed very well. These Bay forwards
combined well with the backs so that the fast hands of Scott Kane
Scrum Half could release the flying backs of Matty Humphries, Connah
Harding ,Jake Wilson, Tom Jones, Gareth Mansfield and Luke Rawicki
who all made huge gains in ground. It was due to this powerful
forward play that the backs released Connah Harding at Inside Centre
to score a superb solo try by side stepping three defenders to score
under the posts which was converted by Tom Jones. The Bay again
pressurised the line for long periods of time and in spite of having
the ball over the line regularly the Flint defence managed to hold
the ball up to stop further points being scored. The Bay added a
further five points from Remy Sheil Number 8 with a long range try
before the large crowd watched a spectacular individual try from
Luke Rawicki. Luke Rawicki at Full Back Half took a clearing kick
from the Flint fullback on his half way and after dummying two
players and side stepped three others he went in the corner to make
the final score 32 :Nil even though the Bay were down to 13 men for
the last ten minutes of the match.
Man of the Match today was Tom
Jones Winger for his superb tackling and support play with
additional seasonal points going to forwards Kieran Williams and
George Roberts for some great play in the loose which secured the
possession for the backs to score some great tries through running
rugby.

Colwyn Bay 15 Clevedon
Community School Bristol 34
This Sunday fixture was due to
be away to Nant Conwy but with regional rugby removing three players
from CBRFC to play in North East Wales and nine from Nant Conwy in
North West Wales a quickly arranged fixture was added to the season
fixture listing. The Bay under 13s today welcomed Clevedon Community
School from Bristol who were on tour in North Wales for a game at
Brookfield Road the first time these two teams have met. However for
the first time in 5 years of running this side the team management
could not field a full 15 a side team which is most unusual for this
age group. Unfortunately this age group now is very light on numbers
due with Adam Stroud Centre, Callum Teasdale Flanker, Harry Parks
Centre, Kurt Taylor Williams Prop, Will Murphy Prop, Harri Parkes
Centre, currently out injured. Furthermore with Lewis Shaw Prop,
Kieran Williams Second Row, not available and Matty Humphries Fly
Half, Connah Harding Inside Centre and Remy Sheil Number 8 away on
regional rugby, Clevedon Community School such is the fair play
ethos in Rugby sportingly gave four boys to play for the Bay to make
a game of it. With the absence of the regular players this gave the
team management the opportunity to move players around so that
additional experience was gained in other areas which resulted in
some very promising performances on the day.
Bristol as most rugby followers
is a strong rugby area and schools and clubs in the South West of
the country are usually of a very high standard and Clevedon are no
exception to that rule and have managed to get players into the
England Under 16 schools teams. Clevedon got off to a flying start
with some unusually weak tackling by the Bay let Clevedon run in
three quick long range tries from team members, Rich, Williams, and
Haskell before the Bay replied through a drive over try from Prop
Jordan Edwards. Clevedon added another just before half time from
Pridoe with a breakaway try which went the length of the pitch after
a speculative kick through was allowed to bounce and was pounced on
by the chasing Clevedon backs to go under the posts and to lead 24:5
at the break and were worthy leaders.
In the second half the Bay now
minus Jacob Trotter Flanker to an injury finally woke up and started
to play some better rugby with great forward play from Adam Smith,
Jamie Owen, Jordan Edwards Nicholas Ingham, George Roberts and
Gareth Mansfield as one powerful unit drove Clevedon back twenty
metres on a rolling maul to ensure that David Edwards came out with
the ball to score a great forwards try. Just after the restart the
Bay got a scrum on the 22m line and Scott Kane Scrum Half got the
ball from the base of the scrum side stepped the number 8 and broke
through two tackles to hit the line for a superb solo try to make
the score 24:15 and now it was game on and a great fight back was on
the cards. The Bay backs started to fire with Tom Cauldwell playing
at Fly Half releasing quick ball to Jake Wilson Centre, Tom Jones
Wing, George Roberts Wing and Luke Rawicki coming into the line at
full back, the game ebbed and flowed. However Clevedon again with
some great forward play linking to their strong running centres
moved the ball quickly down the line again to score from Mathias and
Pridoe at the end of the game to make the final score 34:15.
The overall result of this game
showed that Clevedon were sporting and worthy winners. The Bay boys
look forward to them returning to the Bay next year on tour when
hopefully a full squad will be available to make it a closer game.
One notable point that has come out of this game is that the tour to
England in 2011 could now be going to Bristol as the hospitality is
good and access to top Guinness Premier Rugby teams is close by at
Worcester, Bath, and hopefully by then Bristol .
The Bay Man of the Match was
Scott Kane Scrum Half for great endeavour and support play and for a
quality individual try against the run of play. Additional effort
points go to Tom Jones Wing for some outstanding tackling and Tom
Caldwell at Fly Half for some great incisive running when playing
out of his normal position. Adam Smith second row was also noted for
his aggressive running which made big territorial gains ages to give
good field position for the backs
Training on Tuesday at 18.30
followed by Flint RFC at home next Sunday at home meet at 10.15
dress collar and tie.

Colwyn Bay Under 13s 58 v
Llangefni Under 13s 22
After yesterday great victory at
Rydal School and missing a few key players Colwyn Bay Under 13s
welcomed Llangefni who are Ynys Mon premier junior team to
Brookfield Road on a beautiful September day where running rugby was
the order of the day. This Llangefni team have only been together
at this age group for 18 months and are a much improved team and the
whilst the score line looks flattering to Colwyn Bay it does not
really tell the story of the game, where the Bay were made to work
for their victory against a spirited team from Ynys Mon.
The Bay got of a dream start
where three quick tries were run in by Harri Parkes Wing, Connah
Harding Fly Half Centre and Matty Humphries Inside Centre followed
by Remy Sheil Number 8 to go into a 24 point lead. However Llangefni
soon found their stride and hit back with a great solo effort from
Billy Wyn Jones Second Row breaking from a maul to score a great try
which unfortunately the conversion was missed. The Boys from the Bay
struck back quickly with another try from Tom Cauldwell Winger
followed by another from Connah Harding to lead 38: 5 at the break
with good conversions from George Roberts Hooker, and Harri Parkes
Winger.
Many teams who are behind at
this stage would fold but this team as coached by the legendary Pat
from Llangefni showed great spirit in the second half and came
straight back with a great try from Bryn Jones, followed by another
try from Billy Wyn Jones and a further try from Dewi Humphreys to
bring the Llangeni score up to 22 points in quick succession and
back in the match. The Bay then pulled away again with tries from
Jake Wilson Centre Connah
Harding followed by Jacob Weigh Flanker barging over the line taking
two defenders with him to score under the posts. The Bay forwards
led by Jordan Edwards and Adam Smith dominated possession and were
in the Llangefni 22m for a long periods of time but great defending
by Llangefni kept the Bay out from scoring many more tries. The Bay
drove the Llangefni team over their try line and the resulting five
metre scrum Scott Kane Scrum Half made one of his trade mark tries
darting from the base of the scrum to score a further try. A final
try was added by Connah Harding in the last play after chasing a
kick through to the in goal area.
The verdict of the game was that
Llangefni are a much improved side and the return fixture at
Llangefni will be a match to look forward to against a fast
developing side who have got four players through to the North West
Wales Regional side.
Man of the Match Connah Harding
Fly Half and great endeavour points awarded to effort to Matty
Humphries, Jacob Weigh, and Remy Sheil.

Rydal School Nil Colwyn Bay
53
Without doubt this is one of the
most eagerly awaited fixtures in the CBRFC Under 13s sporting
calendar and this year was no exception. There are many attractions
about this unique fixture which appeal to the Colwyn Bay Boys in
that:
It is a local derby going “up
the hill” to play a top private school with a long pedigree in
school rugby in Wales and England who regularly play top schools so
the opposition is no push over,
-
It is one of the only
Saturday fixtures in the season so extra rugby to be played is
always more enjoyable,
-
The Bay boys are playing
against their friends with some CBRFC boys playing for their
school i.e. Jordan Edwards Hooker for CBRFC playing at Second
Row for his school, in addition to Glen Davis ex CBRFC flanker
who joined Rydal in Year seven, and James Barr who plays for
Nant Conwy
-
Some CBRFC players i.e.
Matty Humphries and Jake Wilson have recently just left Rydal
School and wanted to show Mr Leach Head of Rugby at Rydal and Mr
Jamie MaCleod Sports Teacher at Lyndon that they had not
forgotten what they have learned at Rydal and Lyndon private
schools respectively.
-
The facilities and post
match hospitality are always excellent.
-
This year the fixture was
also arranged to compliment the Rydal School Open day so the
boys had a large gathering of very sporting Rydal spectators
watching which added to the game atmosphere.
With Jake Wilson ex Lyndon and
Rydal being nominated as Captain for CBRFC the game got under way
with some great attacking rugby from Rydal with their forwards
exerting a strong influence on the early exchanges with Jordan
Edwards from CBRFC, James Barr from Nant Conwy RFC , and Sam from
Denbigh RFC showing great endeavour for Rydal as they do for their
weekend clubs. The Bay however got a break away try against the run
of play by Remy Sheil Number 8 scoring in the corner to go one try
up ,which was to be quickly added too by Connah Harding Inside
Centre to the score with a scintillating break down the wing to
score in the corner. Rydal then came back strongly with regular
excursions into the Bay half but only good tackling by the back line
of Scott Kane, Matty Humphries, Connah Harding, Harri Parkes, Jake
Wilson, Luke Rawicki, Tom Cauldwell, Oscar Astbury, ensured no score
was conceded. Just before half time Remy Sheil added a further
forwards drive try and this was then added to by a try by Oscar
Astbury Right Wing which was the finest try of the game. Coming from
the base of the scrum on the Bay 22m area, Scrum Half Scott Kane
broke from the base of the scrum and side stepped the covering
defender and passed the ball to Connah Harding who ran a further
twenty metres, as the two tacklers were hitting Connah Harding he
flicked the ball out of the tackle for Oscar Astbury to cut in on a
diagonal line outside the Rydal 22m line to score under the posts.
George Roberts Hooker converted the kick.
With the score at twenty two nil
at half time neither side let up and in the exchanges were very
competitive up front with Gareth Mansfield normally a Winger being
drafted into the forwards because of a shortage of players showing
again the versatility of the Bay players. Rydal pushed very hard and
the Bay line was threatened on a many occasions, however the Bay
forwards of David Edwards Prop, Jamie Owen Prop, Nicholas Ingham
Second Row, Kieran Williams Flanker, Jacob Weigh Flanker, and Remy
Sheil Number 8,took further control of the game as the second half
progressed. However the Bay latest star George Roberts Hooker who
played on the wing last year and playing only his second game at
hooker played the rugby game of his life in the loose and took four
scrums against the head to give the Bay superior possession in a
shortened second half. Further tries were added by Remy Sheil
(2),Matty Humphries Fly Half, one from flying winger Oscar Astbury,
and Outside Centre Jake Wilson.
Whilst the score ended with a
final converted try in the dying seconds to read Colwyn Bay 53 Rydal
Nil it does not reflect the true story picture of the game and the
Rydal School boys battled to the end. After the game as per the
Rydal tradition excellent hospitality was laid on in the Pavilion
and the of opinion was that the Rydal sandwiches, sausage rolls,
cakes and refreshments were the best of the season with the growing
Bay Boys regularly attacking the provisions, as if it was the try
line.
Man of the Match was George
Roberts Hooker for his support play, excellent hooking against the
head and with outstanding contribution points going to Remy Sheil
Number 8, Scott Kane Scrum Half, Oscar Astbury Wing and Matty
Humphries Fly Half. The CBRFC coaches award for the opposition team
was nominated to Jordan Edwards who played very well against his
team members and stopped many Bay players from getting on the score
board.
Our thanks are once more
extended to Mr Leach Head of PE at Rydal and his team for an
excellent morning sport.

Colwyn Bay 32:
Denbigh 5
With six regular
players missing i.e. Adam Stroud Centre, Kieran Williams Back Row,
Kurt Taylor Williams Prop, Lewis Shaw Prop, Tom Caldwell Full Back,
Scott Kane Scrum Half, and Will Murphy Prop, and with Denbigh who
are one of the most improved teams in North Wales visiting
Brookfield Road, this was always going to be a tough match for the
Boys from the Bay. The score does not underline how tough and close
this match was and whilst the big crowd of parents and regulars of
quality Sunday morning rugby enjoyed the late summer sunshine, the
temperature made it hard work both teams put on a feast of forward
play rugby of the highest order.
The Bay got off
to a flying start after in 50 seconds after the ball shot out of the
Denbigh scrum allowing stand in scrum half Remy Sheil who normally
plays number 8 picked and fell over the line for a try which was
converted by George Roberts. Denbigh came flying back at the Bay and
their impressive forward play by their North East Wales particularly
Ossian made life difficult for the Bay in the close quarter play.
Bay got a break when after fifteen minutes when some quick mauling
by the Bay forwards led to a further break out by Remy Sheil from
the base of the ruck to score in the corner which was unconverted.
Denbigh then took hold of the last part of the first half and some
forward power play in the Bay 22m area resulted in a great pick up
and drive from Ben Diamond from Denbigh to make the score 12:5.The
Bay then when back up the park looking for a quick reply and
Nicholas Ingham Lock Forward picked up the ball from a ruck and
drove over assisted by the whole pack to go in at half time 17:5.
In the second
half Denbigh moved the ball wider and stretched the Bay backs but
some fierce tackling by Connah “ the Hitman” playing at inside
centre ensured that Denbigh were kept out of the 22m.Matty Humphries
Fly Half made some aggressive runs and slipped the ball to Remy
Sheil who ran the length of the park leaving the defence, his own
team, and the referee in his wake to score a superb individual try
which again was unconverted to make the score 22:5.Whilst the
forwards stole the show today the backs did their bit again with
Connah Harding picking up a loose ball on the half way and running
the distance to score in the corner for another run converted try.
Denbigh did not give up and continued to play hard forward rugby and
by the end of the match the Bay Boys knew they had been a very
competitive match. Remy Sheil got his fourth try in the final play
session which gave the score line a flattering score which did not
reflect the efforts of the Denbigh side.
In rugby there is
a saying that “it is the forwards who win the game and it is the
backs who determine the score” well today was that day. This game
belonged to the forwards Adam Smith, Callum Teasdale, David Edwards,
George Roberts, Jacob Weigh, Jamie Owen, Jordan Edwards, and
Nicholas Ingham, who fronted up. Whilst Man of the Match was Remy
Sheil for his tries and support play the exceptional effort points
get awarded to George Roberts Hooker, Jordan Edwards Prop, for
winning the battle in the loose which resulted in the tries for
Remy.
Next game is on
Saturday 19th September 2009 at
Rydal School and be at the Rydal School Pavilion for
09:45am. All players to have
collar and tie and wear their blue Scotland 2009 tour jackets on
the day as this is Rydal School Open day and the School and Club
want to put on a good sporting show for all parents and prospective
parents.
The following
game is on Sunday 20th August 2009 at home against
Llangefni and meet at 10.15am again dress code collar tie and
jacket.
Sun 6th Sept '09
With most of the
Under 13s team missing the regional trials in July and August due to
the summer recess the North East Wales Regional Coaches Dave Rowe
and Dave Antrobus who both coach Mold RFC kindly brought over the
Mold RFC side so as to have a trial for the CBRFC boys. This meant
that the 28 registered CBRFC Under 13s who are eligible could pitch
their skills against last year Anglo Welsh Champions in the first
game of the season. The trial was open to all players regardless of
their duration and tenure at Brookfield Road. To aid the selection
process the game was divided into three twenty minute sections so
all players had the opportunity to show their skills to the North
East Regional Coaches and CBRFC Coaches with many substitutions and
positional rotations.
In the first 20
minute section this was a full on game between both clubs with
players playing in their usual positions, and the Bay boys did their
reputation no harm. The keenly contested and was stalemate for the
first ten minutes until Mold winger Ollie got a break away try. Mold
then went further into the lead after some superb quick rucking and
powerful mauling and continual possession led to a further try by
their fast running back Ben to lead 10 nil at the turn around. Just
after the break the Bay fought their way back into the game with
some great forward play with Remy Sheil Number 8 scoring under the
post after a quick tap penalty from Scrum Half Scott Kane. old came
right back at the Bay and a thrilling encounter ended with a further
try from another quality back Ben in the dying seconds for Mold to
take the honours. All in all a good performance for the first game
from the Bay boys against top quality opposition, especially
considering both sets of boys had not played since the beginning of
April.
In the second
section of 20 minutes Dave Rowe and Dave Antrobus moved the Bay
players around in different positions to see how they performed with
Connah Harding being moved to the Centre, Matty Humphries at Fly
Half, Jordan Edwards Prop, Nicholas Ingham to Number 8, and Remy
Sheil going to second row to see how they performed. In addition to
this the players were encouraged to use moves that are used at
regional coaching levels (leaving forwards out at the first
receiver, only committing four players to the ruck), which developed
the players into thinking outside their normal plans. In addition
some players from Mold and CBRFC swapped sides so as to get used to
playing with different players with Tom Jones playing very well for
both teams. This game was very beneficial to both teams.
In the third
section of 20 minutes the Regional Coaches then swapped over both
over back divisions so that Mold forwards played with CBRFC backs
and vice versa. This was again to test the boys playing with
different players with different players which resulted in an end to
end game which capped a great day at Brookfield Road.
At the end of the
game Dave Rowe Head Coach for the North East Regional Coaches
expressed their great satisfaction of the efforts of both teams and
praised the efforts of all the boys playing. The result of this
“rugby fest” is that it has given the regional coaches even more of
a headache as the quality of the talent on show by the CBRFC Under
13s has added to their selection problems. The North East Region at
Under 13s level is in good shape for regional games against the
other regions throughout Wales.
3The players who
will be selected will know within seven days and these names will be
on the web site. Training for the North East Region will be at
Wrexham RFC and will occur twice per month on a Wednesday evening
and the games will be on the last Sunday of the month.
Well done to the
following players who represented CBRFC so well at this level for
the region; Adam Stroud, Adam Smith, Connah Harding, David Edwards,
Gareth Mansfield, George Roberts, Harry Parks, Jacob Trotter, Jake
Wilson, Jamie Owen, Jordan Edwards, Kieran Williams, Kurt Taylor
Williams, Lewis Shaw, Luke Rawicki, Matty Humphries, Nicholas
Ingham, Remy Sheil, Scott Kane, and Tom Jones. |
