27th April '08 Girls rugby festival What started out as a friendly 3 way match between Sandbach, Buxton and Colwyn Bay U18 Mermaids ended up as a hard-fought, rugby-packed day involving 6 U15 teams and 4 U18 teams. When more teams asked to join in the original friendly match planned for the day, Sandbach coaches Mark Morris and Kevin Jones decided to host a festival of rugby to celebrate the progress made in promoting girls rugby this season. The tournament was held at Moss Farm Recreation Centre, Northwich Sandbach/Waterloo 22 – Mermaids 5 Colwyn Bay U18 Mermaids’ first game of the day was against hosts Sandbach, who had combined with Waterloo for the matches. Colwyn Bay had lost to Sandbach previously, and drawn with Waterloo (both away games). First game nerves seemed to affect Bay, and a few missed tackles and disorganised defensive lines led to Sandbach scoring two tries in quick succession. The Mermaids’ experience helped them to regroup however, and some good work at the breakdowns and good support play led to the first try for the Pink-and-Blues from Yasmin Leung. Sandbach player Melissa generously offered her services to the Mermaids to enable the teams to play 12 a side. Buxton 5 – Mermaids 15 The second game of the day for the Mermaids was against new friends Buxton Bobcats. After the defeat at the hands of Buxton a few weeks earlier, Colwyn Bay had a few scores to settle. This time around the Mermaids were determined to show Buxton just what they could do, and they didn’t disappoint. Once again Mel from Sandbach joined the Mermaids. The Bay had certainly got over their nerves from the first game, and brilliant phases of play saw the majority of the first half being played in the Buxton 22. Rebecca ‘Boo’ Grey crossed in the corner for the first try, and fought her way over shortly afterwards again after sustained pressure from the Mermaids. Buxton fought back, however, and scored a try of their own, which only spurred the Mermaids on, and after some good running by the backs past half way, the Colwyn Bay forwards put together a terrific maul and drove captain Joely Benton over for the deciding try. Glossop 10 – Mermaids 15 The final match for the Mermaids was against Glossop, a match all the Colwyn Bay players were well up for. For this match Mel took a well-earned rest (she had been playing non-stop all day, having also played for Sandbach in their games against Buxton and Glossop!) so Thea donned the famous pink shirt and became an honorary Mermaid. This was by far the Mermaids’ best performance of the day, and one of the best of the season, as they tackled hard and shut down Glossop’s game, before beginning to attack themselves. Several Glossop tries were stopped by heroic try-line defence by Bay, and the Colwyn Bay scrum did awesomely to win the ball back on the five-metre line. Bay advanced up the field, and never looked back. A hat-trick for full-back Leung meant the Mermaids were never behind, but there were tense moments at the end of the game, It was a great day’s rugby and all the girls seemed to enjoy the challenges and look forward to meeting again. Many thanks to Mark, Kevin and all at Sandbach RUFC for organising a fabulous tournament.
Tour '08 U17 Mermaids V Canterbury The Mermaids travelled to Canterbury on the second day of their annual tour this weekend and met with the newly formed Canterbury U18 team for a development match. It was the first match for the Canterbury girls and they were a little nervous but excited and warmly welcomed their visitors. Before the match the girls warmed up together supervised by professional coach and referee Matthew (Spikey). Canterbury could only field 7 players and the Mermaids had 11. So it was decided to play 9 a side with players swapping jumpers and playing for both sides during the game. At one point they were joined by visiting Dutch player Christy Van Oorschot, who was at Canterbury RFC with her team Octopus at the same time. The final quarter was a 7 a side match to finish off the wonderful day. The game was quite close with the Canterbury girls playing some good rugby, breaching the Mermaids’ defences to cross the try line 3 times during the game, boding well for their future. Their scorers were: Lou – 2 tries, Issy – 1 try and Tilly – 1 conversion. Mermaids scorers were: Jane Owen – 1 try, 7 conversions, Sarah Johnston – 1 try, Joely Benton – 4 tries, Abi Beards – 3 tries, Ellen (Mwsh) Jones – 2 tries, Anna Parkin – 1 try, 1 conversion and Christy Van Oorschot – 1 try. The rugby was played with flair and passion which belied the fun nature of the occasion. The rugby became better as the day progressed. The Canterbury girls gained experience to their well coached core skills making the competition keener. The Mermaids too improved as the day progressed. There were some wonderful passages of running rugby, fast rucking and good support play. The Mermaids used their heavier forwards, combining to produce some good drives and mauls towards the end. The Canterbury team used their faster backs to run wide. This classic contest between forwards and backs was only won by the Mermaids because of their experience and their confidence at having played together for a while. Special mention is reserved for Joely Benton who captained the team with increasing authority and confidence, Jane Owen, who too is increasing in confidence in powering over the gain line to add to her handling and kicking skills; Ellie Rawicki had a good game, coming away from the wing to create holes in the defence with her speed; Jade Mills continued her upwards spiral of form and played very well adding to her inherent good handling skills. Emma Beaumont is the organiser in the back division; Abi Beards did what she does well, darting from the base of the scrums to push the opposition defences. Anna Parkin displayed the ability to think on her feet and complement the cohesion of the back line. Amongst the forwards Sarah Johnston, Kumari Tilakawardane and ‘Mwsh’ Jones increased in confidence, joining Captain Joely Benton in breaking through the opposition and the gain line time and again. Amelia Stubbs enjoyed a good game joining the more senior members of the forwards in their forays. Emily Jones had to lend supprt from the side line, having suffered a fractured collar bone in the last match. It was good to see the Mermaids regaining some of the continuity in play and confidence that was visible before Christmas but had receded in the second half of the season. This bodes well, with several important games coming up. After the match the Colwyn Bay visitors were treated to some of the best post-match food they had ever had – delicious paella, cooked in a giant pan in the clubhouse lounge. The Mermaids introduced the Canterbury girls to the tradition of a drinking contest between the chosen players-of-the-match. The Canterbury girls chose Abi Beards and the Mermaids picked Lou; it was also decided that Christy Van Oorschot should join in the tradition. The contest was a draw between Lou and Christy, with Abi unable to keep up with them, unlike her performance on the rugby pitch! Final score: Mermaids 81 Canterbury 17
5th April '08 Mermaids 12 Buxton Bobcats 48 The Mermaids hosted touring team Buxton Bobcats this weekend. Knowing their formidable reputation the Mermaids were geared up for a tough game, and were thrilled when they beat the visitors at ten-pin Bowling on Friday night! Due to damaged pitches at Colwyn Bay, Bangor RFC kindly allowed the game to be held there. Colwyn Bay had a much depleted team with three regular U18s representing Wales Colleges and three others away on other commitments, and could only bring ten players, but Buxton graciously lent one player to play an 11-a-side game. From the start Buxton showed what a class act they are, but the Bay contested well. Buxton threw the ball out wide and the first try was scored from an overlap on the wing. The Bay was unlucky not to score when a pass from Abi Beards to Emily Jones was spilled a metre from the try-line. But the Mermaids didn’t lose heart and hit back moments later after a series of rucks on the Buxton try-line which resulted in scrum-half Beards getting over the line. The game was well contested, most of the play in the Colwyn Bay half and sustained pressure from Buxton led to a try under their posts. Colwyn Bay fought hard to get back into it and captain Joely Benton scored a diving try under the posts, but sustained a painful leg injury in doing so. This try was converted by Jane Owen. Moments after this Emma Beaumont injured her ankle making a tackle and had to leave the field. Buxton scored the fifth try of the first half to make the score after the first half 19-12. Moments into the second half Bay captain Benton left the field because of injury. Buxton generously provided enough players to make up for the losses. For most of the second half Colwyn Bay were defending, and missed far too many tackles to give themselves a chance. Buxton ran away with the match in the second half and scored 29 unanswered points. Colwyn Bay had several chances to get back in the game, the best chance coming from a maul right on the try line but the ball was lost. The Mermaids never gave up and were a credit to North Wales. Colwyn Bay sustained their third and most serious injury late in the match when winger Emily Jones fractured her collar-bone in a tackle. The better team certainly won on the day, but Colwyn Bay did put together some great passages of play and should have scored more points than they did. Buxton chose Beards as Colwyn Bay’s player of the match, but the referee and Bay coach both gave special mention to Sarah Johnston, playing in the unfamiliar position of hooker, who was all over the pitch and won every Colwyn Bay scrum and all but one of Buxton’s. Colwyn Bay chose Buxton winger Flo as their player of the match. Nick Bennison, Buxton Head Coach, made Abi and Flo both eat a whole raw chilli as reward! Buxton have invited Colwyn Bay for a return fixture next season and the Mermaids look forward to playing the sociable and talented team again.
2nd March '08 Mermaids U18 50-5 Llangollen The Mermaids travelled to Llangollen on Sunday, with the unusual luxury of having a full team. Llangollen turned up with only 9 players, so asked to borrow a Bay player to make up a team of 10, and Emily Jones kindly played the first half for Llangollen. Early on the Mermaids dropped the ball on several occasions, but soon settled and Ellie Evans ran clear for the first score of the match, converted by Jane Owen. Several Llangollen players were injured, so the Bay lessened their numbers to nine at one point in the game. Regular Nant Conwy player Elin ‘Mwsh’ Jones (who offered her services to the Mermaids for the day) and Wales cap Issy Jones were strong ball-carriers all over the field, and broke through on several occasions. After that the Mermaids began to play rugby, some great support play bringing tries for Abi Beards, Gwen Harries, Jane Owen and two for Sarah Johnston, three converted by Owen. Amelia Stubbs was unfortunate not to be added to the score sheet when a pass didn’t go to hand with the Llangollen line at her mercy. Mention must go to Mermaid Emily Jones, who was one of the standout players for Llangollen in the first half. Due to some unforeseen objections from the Llangollen coaches, Kumari Tilakawardane offered to swap with Emily Jones in the second half. The controversy somewhat dampened the spirits in which the match was played. Colwyn Bay continued to apply the pressure, Jade Mills playing superbly in her debut match. Llangollen made their first visit to the Colwyn Bay 22, and would have scored if not for a try-saving tackle from Gwen Harries. Llangollen played much better in the second half and only Colwyn Bay’s Anna Parkin and Emma Beaumont playing outstandingly in defence halted any chance of a Llangollen score. Colwyn Bay threw away a couple of chances; if Rebecca Gray’s kick up field had been regathered a try would have been certain. However, further tries for Colwyn Bay came through; a second for Gwen Harries and a Captain’s try for Joely Benton, who burst through several tackles on her way to the line, which was converted by Owen. Ellie Rawicki was unlucky not to score the Bay’s 9th try late on, when she was hauled down metres from the line. Llangollen got their chance towards the end of the game. They were first held up and Abi Beards ripped the ball free and almost cleared, but the ball was turned over on the Mermaids’ line and Llangollen got a consolation try. Captain Joely Benton was named as player of the match by the Llangollen team. Colwyn Bay, for the second time in two consecutive matches, put 50 points on their opponents, which can only bode well for their impending league decider against Nant Conwy.
10th February '08 Bangor 0 – Mermaids 50 Colwyn Bay U17 Mermaids travelled to Bangor on Sunday morning to play a friendly match against Bangor writes Kumari Tilakawardane. There were some attempts at jokes when spectators realised the Bay were sponsored by ‘Food Glorious Food’, a local catering company, and Bangor by the Aga shop. This turned out to be apt, as the Mermaids certainly were cooking on gas! (Coincidentally, the referee was sponsored by Warburton’s bread – so it was a veritable ‘feast’ of rugby!) Straight from kick off Colwyn Bay threatened, and after a few phases, borrowed U14 Mermaid Ellie Evans ran clear for the first try of the morning. The Mermaids had virtually all the possession, but didn’t make quite the use of it they would have hoped, only scoring another 3 tries in the first half; a great bursting run from the captain Joely Benton, a well worked try scored by second row Abi Beards, and one from scrum-half Anna Parkin. In the latter half, Colwyn Bay allowed Bangor to field an extra two players for game practice, and when Bangor were awarded a penalty early on, it seemed their over-lap would pay off, until the Mermaids turned the ball over and Sarah Johnston broke through to score beneath the posts. A second for Ellie Evans soon followed, and winger Emily Jones was very unlucky not to score a try moments later. This was made up for, however, when Ellie Rawicki scored a Shane Williams-esque try in the corner. Several good rucks for the Bay awarded Anna Parkin her second try of the day, and Kumari Tilakawardane was denied another try for the Mermaids due to a high tackle. Jane Owen kicked excellently; converting 5 of the 8 tries, and Sarah Johnston in the unfamiliar role of hooker won all the scrums, both Colwyn Bay’s and Bangor’s put ins. Credit must go to Bangor, who have improved significantly since the last time the two teams met, at the beginning of the season. All in all, a rewarding trip for the Mermaids, who played a great game 10 against 12, winning the game 50-0. An excellent Colwyn Day.
2nd December '07 Sandbach 22 – Mermaids 5 The Mermaids travelled to Sandbach for a return match on a cold and wet day. With them was their special guest, Christine Stanisich, who had travelled over from Nova Scotia, Canada, to watch the girls play. Christine is a former USA international player and indeed a World Cup winning captain and now coaches in Acadia University in Canada. The university regularly offers scholarships to girls who excel in sports. She is on a visit to spot some local talent for her University team. She was rewarded by an intense game, with the Mermaids trying hard to overcome the thrashing that was meted out by Sandbach last time. The muddy conditions underfoot did not prevent running rugby. The Mermaids tackled and defended well preventing Sandbach from scoring with the freedom they did at the last encounter few months ago. They contained Harriet, the Sandbach international who was the nemesis of the team last time. The first passage of play was even with a try a piece. The Mermaids try was a well crafted forwards move ending with a try by Issy Jones. Many of the attacking moves of the Mermaids were stopped by uncharacteristic handling errors possibly caused by the wet conditions. However Sandbach pulled away in the first half with two opportunistic tries. The second half saw the Sandbach girls pin the Mermaids to their half for most of the time using the wind cleverly to kick them back whenever they tried to move forward. Many of the forays by Sandbach were ground down by some determined tackles from the Mermaids. Captain Joely Benton, Rebecca Grey and Issy Jones were outstanding in this regard. The forwards frequently outplayed the Sandbach counterparts with drives and mauls but lacked the fluency due to losing the ball too often to the opposition, putting themselves repeatedly on the back foot and having to defend. They made some forays of their own into the Sandbach half by some tactical kicking by stand off half Jane Grey. However the handling errors of the first half continuing to frustrate them. Sandbach scored again twice, punishing the Mermaids for the few tackles that they missed. In the end the match was a convincing win for Sandbach. However the effort by the Mermaids was a much improved one from the last encounter with Sandbach, provoking the question from one of the Sandbach coaches as to how many new players were in the Mermaids for them to have improved so much! There was a pleasant expression of surprise when they were told that this was the same team, drawing the comment about how much they had improved since their previous encounter. The handling errors and the possible lack of experience in utilising the ground conditions and using more tactical kicking may have been the difference between the two teams this time. The score line did not reflect the passage of play and the Mermaids will be happy with their overall performance and will rue that some handling errors may have taken away the chance of beating the home side. A period of reflection and more concentration on developing the underutilised skills of strategic kicking may help overcome the difference between the two teams at the next encounter which is being hopefully planned for the coming year.
18th November '07 Mermaids 41 – Nant Conwy 12 They say revenge is a dish best served cold – and judging by conditions at Colwyn Bay today that is most definitely the case! After their surprise at defeat at the hands of Nant Conwy last month, the U17 Mermaids were determined to right a few wrongs this time around writes Kumari Tilakawardane. Several players dropped out of the Mermaids side at short notice, although they still managed to field a team. Nant however had to borrow 4 Oswestry players and as a result each team fielded 12. The Colwyn Bay team were clearly determined, and by the time Martin ‘The Motivator’ Rees had finished with them, they were all psyched up and ready to play. The Bay started off really strongly, following the kick off with a period of sustained pressure on Nant until winger Abi Beards scored in the corner. The visitors hit back with a try from scrum-half Sian Williams following several missed tackles by the Bay. The Mermaids didn’t take too kindly to that, and for the rest of the half the Bay didn’t let up, a second try for Abi and the first two of a hat-trick for opposite winger Ellie Evans, two of which were converted by fly-half Jane Owen. After the break the Bay continued in this style, with Ellie getting another and scrum-half Anna Parkin and flanker Sarah Johnston both scoring well-earned tries. Nant Conwy got one try back through several of the Mermaids’ North Wales team-mate Mwsh, who scored and converted her own superb solo effort. Even the Bay players approved of that try, just a little bit! There were several stand out performers for Colwyn Bay, and considering there was a second rower playing centre, number eight playing full back and several other positional changes, the team gelled really well together. Special mention has to go to captain Joely Benton for having an all round awesome game and leading by example, and also to Abi Beards for remaining the top try scorer so far this season! Emma Beaumont, Anna Parkin and Sarah Johnston also played exceptionally well, particularly in defence, although the entire team contributed to the flowing phases of play and excellent rucking. U14s Gwen Harries and Ellie Evans showed that they have the talent to play for the U17s and did everyone proud. Isn’t it nice when a plan comes together… as they say, practice makes perfect.
14th October '07 Colwyn Bay Mermaids combined training session 14.10.07 On Sunday 14 October the U14 Mermaids were hosting the first U14s tournament of the season, while the U17 Mermaids were scheduled for regular training. Bangor and Oswestry were contacted about the U14 tournament but neither had a full team so were invited to attend with all their girls, whatever age. On the day they turned up with a few U14 girls each, who combined to play in the U14 tournament, while all the U17 girls joined together for a joint training session. Geoff Taylor, Director of Girls Rugby at Colwyn Bay RFC, held a training session with the forwards – the first time many of them had used a Scrummaging machine – and all the girls agreed that the session had been very useful. Louis Tilakawardane, U17 Mermaids coach then combined all U17 girls – Mermaids, Bangor and Oswestry and held a training session/ fun match with the girls, with Jess Rhodes, formerly an U17 Mermaid, assisting with coaching. All the girls had great fun and showed during a question and answering session at the end of practice that they had benefited from the session. Some of the girls were inexperienced in rugby and admitted that they were very nervous about playing with more experienced players from other teams, but at the end of the session they were much more confident and everybody had made new friends and learned new skills. All the coaches agreed that we should all get together when we can to enable girls rugby to continue to grow in North Wales. 7th October '07 U17 Mermaids mini-tournament 7 October 2007 Final Scores: Mermaids 19 Nant Conwy 21 Mermaids 10 Waterloo 12 Mermaids 7 Sandbach 52 The U17 Mermaids hosted a mini-tournament on Sunday and had a very physical and tough day. The Mermaids were without several experienced players but welcomed back Jess Jones, who was one of the original Mermaids back in 2005. Also joining us were new props Emily McBride and Amelia Stubbs. The first match was against old rivals Nant Conwy and proved to be a very bruising encounter indeed. Many supporter comments were it was more like a big fight than a rugby match! At the insistence of Nant, there was an inconsistency in the rules which meant the Bay had to change their team unexpectedly in the first few minutes, which caused confusion – which worked in Nant’s favour. The visitors scored 3 tries in quick succession and it seemed the Bay had lost hold of the match. However, captain Joely Benton scored a try that began the revival, converted by Jane Owen, and then soon followed by a great score from Sarah Johnston, also converted. In the final minutes of the game the Bay were permanently on the Nant line – the referee ruling two tries were held up. In the final play of the game scrum-half Anna Parkin scored a well-deserved try, but unfortunately the conversion was just missed and the match went to the Nant Conwy Bulls 21-19. After all the initial confusion, Colwyn Bay equalled the try count and played a better half of rugby. Due to time restrictions because of a changed schedule the Mermaids only had 10 minutes before their next game against Waterloo. A fairly evenly matched game saw several Waterloo players leave the field injured, fortunately unlike the Mermaids they had plenty of substitutes! Abi Beards scored a brace of tries. Unfortunately the conversions went just to the wrong side of the uprights, and the depleted Mermaids team again lost by 2 points. The final game for the Mermaids was against Sandbach. They proved to be almost unstoppable, thanks to their one-woman try machine, Harriet. Joely Benton scored a great try from the halfway line, converted by fly-half Jane Owen. The Mermaids without their full team and insufficient match preparation lost to a very well drilled and professional team; no shame at all. 23rd September '07 U17 Mermaids V Waterloo The Mermaids travelled to Waterloo for an action packed game on Sunday. Under English rules, they played an Under 18 side, which meant Rebecca Grey and Issy Jones, who are now too old to play for the U17s were welcomed back to the fold. The game was fast-paced and hard fought from the start, and an injury to Manon Roberts meant that brand new Mermaid Emily Jones made her debut much earlier than expected. The Mermaids just didn’t seem to have any possession in the opening period of the game, which made it even more remarkable when, after sustained pressure from Waterloo, the Mermaids scored first. Bay Captain Joely Benton started an excellent move which saw the ball passed quickly down the line, ending up with Rebecca Grey, who managed to ground the ball even though she was tackled just inches from the try line. Stand off Jane Owen converted the try, the Mermaids led 7-0 as the referee blew for half time. After half time, a long passage of play saw advantage passed to and fro to either side without score. A mistake under pressure by the Mermaids saw Waterloo running through to score and end the Mermaids clean defence record for the season. The try was converted and the scores levelled. A poor passage of play for the Mermaids followed with Waterloo scoring again, this try was not converted. Following this the Mermaids regained their composure and launched a prolonged assault on the Waterloo defence. The best chance of a score seemed to be when the ball was passed out to Sarah Johnston from scrum half Anna Parkin, which was followed by a blistering run from Eleanor Rawicki, who was unfortunately pushed out to touch. Hooker Angharad Lloyd’s throw went askew in the last quarter, and it was only some outstanding tackling from Emma Beaumont and Gemma Pearson which stopped Waterloo from really closing the game down. A forwards drive put Kumari Tilakawardane over the try line which seemed to have been grounded. However, the referee had seen an infringement and instead a penalty was awarded to Waterloo relieving the pressure on Waterloo. With further pressure exerted by the Mermaids, Waterloo conceded a penalty in the last minute. A quick penalty was taken by Kumari Tilakawardane and the ball was taken almost to the try line in a solo effort from Issy Jones, with the final pass going to Abi Beards, who scored in the corner. She has continued her remarkably productive try scoring streak since the culmination of the Sevens tournament in Cardiff in June and has now scored in every match this season. She seems to be thriving even though she has been playing away from her preferred scrum half position. The difficult conversion if successful would have meant that the Mermaids had won in the final passage of play. However, the conversion from near the touch line on the far left was too difficult. The final whistle sounded soon after and the match ended in a draw. The crowds went away content that a fine match between two sporting teams, evenly contested, ended with both teams sharing the rewards at the end of the match. The coaches decide to award the traditional ‘Maid of the Match’ to the whole team as they all played superbly, though much can be improved on before the return fixture at Brookfield Drive on 7 October. By Kumari Tilakawardane
16th September '07 WRU Girls 10s tournament Bangor RFC 16.9.2007 The U17 Mermaids arrived to true Welsh weather in Bangor for the start-of-season WRU 10s tournament on Sunday ready to defend their title as North Wales champions, writes Kumari Tilakawardane. A very disappointing turn out from some members of the team left the committed players a little worried, but U14 Mermaids Gwen Harries and Ellie Evans stepped up to fill in the gap. Only two other teams arrived and the first match for the U17 teams was between hosts Bangor and Nant Conwy. This was a fairly evenly matched game and the Bangor girls received a lot of support from spectators and were very impressive, considering they are a newly formed team and were playing a well established side. Later Colwyn Bay Mermaids played old rivals Nant Conwy – a game rife with rough play – probably due to Nant’s frustrations at having no answer to the Mermaids quick ball and decisive tackling. Three of the Mermaids were left with injuries after the match, but they were cheered by the eventual score of Mermaids 35, Nant 0. Tries were scored by Abi Beards, Anna Parkin, Jess Rhodes, Jane Owen, Ellie Evans and two from Gwen Harries. It was decided by the officials that tries would not be converted, due to the poor weather conditions. After a very short break the weather worsened, with gale force winds and driving rain, but the Mermaids are hardy girls and took to the field to face Bangor – they were obviously not as tired as they thought as they put 13 tries past Bangor, despite impressive attempts at defence. Hat tricks from Jess Rhodes and Emma Beaumont, two tries each for Anna Parkin and Abi Beards and one apiece for Ellie Evans, Sarah Johnston and Kumari Tilakawardane put the seal on an impressive tournament victory. 20 tries, 100 points and 0 conceded – that all adds up to an exciting season ahead for the Mermaids and adds another trophy to the club’s trophy cabinet!
