Rhyl v Colwyn Bay (cancelled Rhyl
could not raise team)
With this being the last game of the
season away to Rhyl the boys were looking forward to this game more than
any other recent game so as to sign off with a good game of rugby.
Colwyn Bay had beaten Rhyl by 50:5 on the 23rd November 2008
at Brookfield Road however Rhyl are a much more improved side and gave
Colwyn Bay a good game of rugby at the Anglo Welsh tournament 0n the 26th
April 2008 at Wrexham. With Colwyn Bay finishing 3rd in that
tournament and Rhyl finishing in 5th there was not going to
be much between the teams this time.
However late on Friday night the Bay
received a call from Rhyl to say that they could not raise a team which
was big disappointment and the game was called off on the Saturday
morning. Although the Bay can claim the game as a winning fixture it is
intended to rearrange this fixture at Rhyl as a mid week match in early
September at Rhyl so the boys can meet each other in this fixture..
No training on Tuesday 5th
May 2009 and all players to be present at the presentation next Sunday
10th May 2009 see web site for further for details by Thursday.

Colwyn Bay U12’s attended the
Anglo-Welsh Tournament this Sunday and played well in all their
three games, reaching the semi-finals
and finishing in third place overall. With Stoke pulling out,
Bay had only 2 pool matches, the first against a large Rhyl team who
wanted to avenge their defeat earlier in the year. Playing two 7
minute halves it was vital to get going quickly and Bay did just
that taking the game to Rhyl and making sure they got their tackles
in early. Despite the size advantage Rhyl had, Bays determination
gradually drove them back. The ball was shifted with speed by Scott
Kane, Jake Wilson, Harri Chinery-Parkes and Adam Stroud who’s final
pass put in Remy Sheil to run down the wing to score. In the second
half it was much the same with Bay applying most of the pressure.
Jordan Edwards, Jacob Trotter and Matthew Patricolo regularly stole
the ball from Rhyls pack, where great tackling by all the players
thwarted any Rhyl attack. Towards the end of the game, this
domination was rewarded with a break down the wing by Connah
Harding, evading tackles, to score in the corner. 10-0 to Bay.
After a gap, Bays next game was
against the hosts, Wrexham. Bay again started off well and with the
first play good recycling by David Edwards and a swift pass from
Adam Stroud allowed Remy Sheil to score. Nicholas Ingham, Jack
Morris, Lewis Shaw, George Roberts and Jamie Owen all held their own
against a determined Wrexham pack and it was very even for the rest
of the half. In the second half though it was a different story,
when Bay suddenly forgot how to tackle and Wrexham took advantage of
this with 3 quick tries down the left side, capitalising on the
skills of their excellent winger. This stunned Bay who tried to
fight back at the end but were unable to break down the Wrexham
defence. Despite this loss Bay went into the semi finals against
Mold, probably the top side of this age group in North Wales who had
won their pool. Bay had a huge size disadvantage all over the field,
and Mold used this to their advantage by capitalising on poor Bay
tackling to cruise into a 19-0 half time lead. However, a turning
point in the second half was a fine tackle by Jake Wilson leading to
Bay possession and a lengthy run down the wing by Adam Stroud, which
when the ball was recycled led to a fine try under the posts for
Remy Sheil. Bay were now in top gear and shortly afterwards Remy
Sheil again got in for a score under the posts, after great all
round play by Callum Teesdale and Jordan Edwards. This was converted
by Tom Jones to make the score 19-12. Mold were now rattled and
Bay’s confidence grew as they showed what they could do with
excellent runs by Luke Rawicki and Gareth Mansfield, as well as big
tackles all over the pitch, but they were unable to convert any of
this into any more scores. With the last play, Bay spilled the ball
and a quick break down the wing gave Mold the final try. However,
Bay could hold their heads up high. Had the match been longer, they
would possibly have managed to steal a win. Well played to all the
boys involved in what was a very good tournament.

Llangefni U12 12 Colwyn
Bay U12 32
On a beautiful day, Bay notched up
what appeared to be a comfortable win against Llangefni, but one which,
particularly in the first half, they made look much more difficult. Both
teams started by making basic errors particularly with their handling,
on what were excellent conditions for passing and catching. Llangefni
won the majority of the 50-50 ball, by using their big forwards to out
drive Bay on anything that was loose or mishandled. Bay eventually got
in scoring mode though, when a good team effort involving a number of
the forwards, Lewis Shaw, Nicholas Ingham, David Edwards and Jack
Morris, led to Remy Shiel powering over from close range. However,
Llangefni came straight back and some sustained pressure near to Bays
line resulted in them levelling things just before the break. However on
the half time whistle, Bay regained the initiative after a good break
from Connah Harding led to him scoring in the corner for the visitors to
lead 10-5. After a request for better concentration on the simple
things, Bay then started to put things together better in the second
half, although they were not to have it all their own way. Remy Sheil
scored two quick tries, the second after a fine backs move between Harri
Chinery-Parkes, Jake Wilson and then a good pop up pass from Adam Stroud
to Remy to score under the posts, which Adam converted. Bay were
unlucky then not to score two further tries, the first after a good
passage of forward power from Kieran Williams and Matthew Patricolo,
which allowed Jordan Edwards to put the ball down on the line, despite
the close attentions of a number of Llangefni tacklers, although the
referee had been unsighted and felt the ball had landed short, and then
a quick move down the wing between George Roberts, Luke Rawicki and
Andrew Teese let in Gareth Mansfield to dive into the corner, but a
great covering tackle just managed to put him in touch before he placed
the ball. Llangefni fought back and some good pressure led to Bays
scrambled defence conceding a penalty 20 yards out. The ball was given
to their biggest forward who with a combination of his power and a
number of slack tackles managed to get himself across the bay line. Bay
put together a number of good phases of play to take the game back into
the Llangefni 22 and from a scrum, Scott Kane ran round the blind side,
committed the defender and passed to Adam Stroud to run the ball into
the corner. The scoring was not yet finished as Bay now found the space
and passed the ball they had struggled to do earlier in the game, and a
great break down the wing and a good hand-off led to Remy Sheil getting
his fourth and Bays sixth score to make it a good victory. Tom Jones
stood out for some great tackling.

Colwyn Bay 19 Pwllheli 19
The visit of Pwllheli is always
eagerly await at Brookfield Road as they are one of the strongest teams
in North Wales and one of the few teams to beat Colwyn Bay last season.
Pwllheli started well and within five minutes they were 5 nil up after
their talented Centre ran through some weak tackling by the Bay and the
try was converted to put Pwllheli into an early and commanding lead.
Further additional pressure meant that only dogged tackling by the Bay
kept Pwllheli out in the first ten minutes. When the Bay eventually got
going their forwards started to take the game to Pwllheli and Jacob
Trotter was driven by the other forwards and the ball was grounded
against the padding of the posts thereby a try was scored and converted.
Pwllheli again hit back with some good free flowing rugby and their
backs crossed the Bay line for a further converted try. The Bay backs
then responded and finished off a free flowing backs move to score and
unconverted try and take command of the game and dominated the rest of
the half being camped in the Pwllheli 22 . The referee should have
awarded a penalty try when Pwllheli forwards stopped a quick tap penalty
by flanker Jacob Trotter who was five yards from the line but only gave
a warning and a repeat penalty for the first half to finish 12 points
all.
In the second half the Bay again
dominated up front with and released the backs however Pwllheli tackled
well and stopped the main Bay ball carriers of Remy Sheil making their
usual yardage. With Bay dominating forward possession and Pwllheli
conceding penalties it was only a matter of time before a score
occurred. Pwllheli again interfered in stopping a quick penalty seven
metres from the line and hence stopped a certain score and the referee
after warning Pwllheli for this in the first half awarded a penalty try
which was converted. However Pwllheli were not to be outsmarted and an
offside offence by the Bay backs in the last two minutes at the ruck
allowed Pwllheli to cross the line under the posts once more. A 19 all
draw was a fair result.

International Power First Hydro U12
Tournament 29th March 2009
On a beautiful Spring day, 6 teams, Colwyn
Bay, Caernarfon, Nant Conwy, Llandudno, Bro Ffestiniog and the
international visitors, Wicklow RFC came together for the annual First
Hydro U12 Tournament at Brookfield Drive and the sizeable crowd were
treated to a half day of exciting, top quality rugby, from all sides,
with Llandudno running out the eventual winners, although, up until the
final round of matches, there were 4 teams in with a shout for coming
first.
From Bays' perspective they can be proud
of how they played in all their games and they finished second overall,
level on points with Wicklow, but ahead on try difference.
Bays first game was against Bro
Ffestiniog, who improved as the tournament went along. Meeting Bay,
early on though, was tough for them and the home team came out 35-0
winners with tries from Scott Kane, Connah Harding, Luke Rawicki, Jack
Morris, Remy Shiel, Kurt Taylor-Williams and Jacob Trotter. Bay
dominated the play throughout and Bro defended well against relentless
attacking and never let their heads drop, but the Bay recycled better
and distributed it out to the back more effectively.
Up next, were Caernarfon, who Bay had
beaten only the previous week. Always a tough contest, Bay had to do a
lot of defending early on with Lewis Shaw, Kieran Williams, Nicholas
Ingham and David Edwards using their strength to repel the Caernarfon
attacks, but eventually the pressure told and Caernarfon forced their
way over to lead. However Bay fought back and dominated the latter
stages, forcing Caernarfon back. Using their superior speed out wide,
the ball reached Remy Shiel who went over in the corner to level things.
Despite further pressure from Bay though, they were unable to get the
winner and the match ended 5-5.
Bay then played the Irish visitors,
Wicklow, who they had played on tour the previous year in two tough
matches. Wicklow were as strong as ever up front and with some big
forwards they made life difficult for the home team. A great individual
try from Remy Shiel opened the scoring for bay and this lead was then
doubled by Tom Jones, who broke away from 2 tackles and did a fine
dummy to score under the posts. Wicklow to their credit didn't give up
and came straight back at Bay and were rewarded with a fine try of their
own, which led to a nail-biting end to the game, with Bay just holding
on to their lead, to win 10-5
In their fourth game in a row, Bay then
met Llandudno and their local rivals dominated play for the majority of
the game. Although tired, Bay did however defend resolutely, and
prevented a number of good scoring opportunities by fine tackling or
getting their bodies under the ball, with Jordan Edwards, Will Murphy
and Callum Teesdale all performing well. On the rare occasion that Bay
managed to get some ground Llandudno ran the ball straight back to them
and deserved the only score of the game in the corner, for all the
pressure they had exerted. Final score Bay 0, Llandudno 5
After a well earned break, the whole
tournament was on a knife-edge with several teams in within a chance to
win it. Bay needed to beat Nant Conwy and have other results go their
way, but Nant came straight out of the blocks and put Bay on the back
foot with some early good pressure which led to an early try. As is the
norm in these matches, both teams played well and neither dominated, so
it was always going to remain close right to the end. Good pressure of
the Nant line after fine runs by Harri Chinery-Parkes and George
Roberts led to panic in the Nant defence and a hurried kick was caught
by Oscar Astbury who just had to fall over the line to score, which he
did. Despite their best continued efforts after that though, they could
not break Nant down and the match ended 5-5.
Big thanks to all the teams who played
good rugby, to the referees on the day and all the 'back room' staff at
the Club who made the tournament go off so well. Remy Shiel was named
Bay player of the tournament for his commitment and hard work, but all
the players should be applauded for their efforts on a great days rugby.
Thanks as always to First Hydro for their
continued support of this tournament

Colwyn Bay U12's 19
Caernarfon U12's 12
A good turn out from both teams despite it
being Mothers Day and it was a tough game for all concerned,
particularly in the forwards. Caernarfon are a big strong group in the
forwards, and Bay made it particularly difficult for themselves by
playing into the visitors hands by trying to match them up front, rather
than whipping the ball out wide to the pacy backs to make use of the big
pitch. That said, Bay's pack did really well and in the first half Bay
dominated possession and territory and had a number of chances to score
early on, but by keeping it in the forwards, they allowed Caernarfon to
drive them backwards and possession was lost. However after 15 minutes,
after another period of sustained mauling by Jordan Edwards, Nicholas
Ingham, David Edwards and Lewis Shaw, the ball was flung wide by Scott
Kane and Connah Harding went over near the posts, which was converted by
Oscar Astbury. Shortly afterwards, again good ball from the base of a
ruck was passed through the backs via Jake Wilson and Connah Harding and
a last pop pass to Tom Jones allowed him to score in the corner.
Although 12-0 at half time, Bay could have and should have been
propbably double that score ahead. In the second half the home team came
under sustained pressure by Caernarfon, who were quicker to the loose
ball and recycling quickly. Bay managed to hold up the ball twice on the
line and there was great tackling from man of the match Callum Teesdale,
Jacob Trotter, Jack Morris and Kurt Taylor-Williams. However their luck
ran out when desperately defending another drive by Caernarfon, the ball
spilled loose and this was jumped on first by a Caernarfon player for a
score which was converted. Bay then started to use more width and the
balance of play was evened out, and it was a fantastic individual break
from the half way line by Remy Shiel that saw him score under the posts
which widened the scoreline to 19-7 after the try was converted by Oscar
Astbury. Caernarfon again came back strongly and soon after reduced the
deficit again after a set move from the scrum. In the last few minutes
Caernarfon broke down the wing and only a great tackle from Gareth
Mansfield stopped them scoring in the corner.

Denbigh 7 Colwyn Bay 21
Only two months ago Colwyn Bay put
41 points past Denbigh however this was not going to happen again as
Denbigh are by far the most improved side at this age group in North
Wales. Colwyn Bay playing some developing players, and players in
different positions and also some players who had not played against
Nant Conwy last week, had to fight for every point this time in a match
which was only won in the dying minutes.
In the opening exchanges Denbigh
dominated upfront and were camped in the Bay 22m metres for the first
ten minutes and only resolute defence by forwards Callum Teasdale, Remy
Sheil ,Nicholas Ingham, Lewis Shaw, Jacob Trotter, Adam Smith and
Captain Kurt Taylor Williams kept out the Denbigh side who played
determined forward orientated rugby. However after staunch tackling by
the backs in particular Connah “the hit man” Harding led to a break down
in the Denbigh attack to which Remy Sheil picking up a loose ball and
running 50 metres fending off three players and breaking two tackles to
score, which was converted by Wing Oscar Harding. The Bay backs then
started to fire and George Roberts, Tom Jones, Jake Wilson, Luke
Rawicki, Oscar Astbury, connecting well with the forwards gaining
territory a slipped pass to Fly Half Connah Harding who side stepped
three players to go in for a try under the posts, to make it 14:0 at
half time.
In the second half the Bay played
better rugby however a loose ball and one missed tackles ensured that
Denbigh scored a try by Sam who is their second row and who also plays
for Rydal School which brought Denbigh into the match at 14:5. Denbigh
again piled on lots of pressure however the Bay contested well at the
scrums and new Hooker Gareth Mansfield (who in the absence of our usual
Hooker Jordan Edwards volunteered in the dressing room to play hooker)
from his usual playing position on the wing. In the ten scrums that
occurred Gareth Mansfield won all his own ball and took three strikes
against the head and his place in next week’s front row is assured.
The game was in the balance until
five minutes from the end as Denbigh defended well in both their backs
and forwards. However a scrum ten yards from the line was won by Gareth
Mansfield and Scrum Half Scott Kane made a break however he was held up
two metres from the line, but immediate support from the Bay back row
including Kieran Williams drove Scott Kane over the line, for a well
worked team try which Oscar Astbury converted.
This was a tough game against a much
improved side which Bay won by playing as a team, and tackling well and
some players made a clear statement of their future potential for the
forthcoming tournaments. Man of the Match was Gareth Mansfield for
outstanding play as Hooker with extra effort commendation points to
Connah Harding and Jacob Trotter.

CBRFC Under 12s 7 Silcoates
Independent School Wakefield 29
The CBRFC Under 12s boys took this
fixture on to assist Rydal School who were unable to accommodate this
school who were on a tour in the area. Silcoates is a top independent
school in Wakefield West Yorkshire who have a proud rugby playing
tradition and play many of the top schools in the country at a very
high level of rugby. With Silcoates playing regular rugby as a team,
and having just beaten local rivals Llandudno the night before, this
match was always going to be a tough fixture for the Bay. In addition
with this being a Saturday match instead of our usual Sunday outings the
squad were missing 8 regular players who were engaged in other sports on
a Saturday. However this match gave the opportunity to many other
players to stake their place for the forthcoming tournaments which will
be by selection only as places are limited to 22 players.
Silcoates got a off to a great start
running in three quick tries from their outstanding full back who
outsprinted the Bay backs from long range. The Silcoates forwards were
not to be outdone and under pack leader flanker Max Wright (known as
Wiggy) they played good tight rugby to go in at half time 29:0 ahead and
many opposition teams would have wilted under this high level of
disciplined team rugby. However in the second half the Bay got going and
started to put some quality play together and did not concede a further
point with Jacob Trotter leading the forwards superbly. The forwards in
particular played better as a unit and rehearsed moves start to pay off
and the majority of the second half the Bay were in Silcoates half but
could not convert the pressure into points. However late in the second
half the Bay got their reward when quick ball from the Scrum was passed
down the line and then an inside pass was given to Remy Sheil who went
the length of the field but was stopped by some fantastic tackling by
the Silcoates backs just short of the line. As a result of the line out
the bay got a catch and drive and Remy Sheil number 8 barged over the
line and under the posts for a great try which Connah Harding Fly Half
converted.
Mr Mills the lead Teacher from
Silcoates awarded the man of the Match to Remy Sheil CBRFC No 8 who
just piped flanker Jacob Trotter, Fly Half Connah Harding and Wing
George Roberts on the wing to the award. Silcoates have invited CBRFC
Under 12s to a rematch which we intend to do so when we tour England in
years to come.
All in all a great Saturday day was
had by all and this touring private school side was by far the most
sporting team that we have played at Brookfield Road and are welcome to
return anytime in the future for games against the club.

Nant Conwy
34
Colwyn Bay 7
The Bay went
up the Conwy Valley today to play a side which for the last six games
had not conceded a try so the chances of coming away with a victory were
slim in what was a double header i.e. a club game and the Eryri cup
quarter final match. In atrocious conditions of high wind, then rain
,then hailstones the Nant Conwy backs got off to a flying start with a
try in the corner by their flying winger Arthur .This was quickly
followed by a good Nant forwards move to get Nant Conwy of to a 12 point
lead within five minutes of the match starting. The Bay fought back with
great spirit in the first half with good runs by backs Harri Chinery
Parkes, Jake Wilson and Tom Jones but the team were generally living of
the scraps of possession as the Nant backs opened up the game from good
ball from their well organised forwards. Jacob Trotter flanker played a
superb game breaking the Nant tackles but slow forward support in
the poor conditions meant that the Bay possession was not turned into
points in the first half, and Nant went into half time 17:0 up
The Bay straight after half time
shipped two quick tries through poor passing and missed tackles and Nant
were out of sight in relation to the Eryri cup result however the boys
did not give up and put in a good performance in the last third of the
game. Remy Sheil the team number 8 was fed a quick pass from Scott Kane
at Scrum Half and Remy broke quickly through the Nant defence to run in
a 40 metre try. Nant ran in some late tries to make the final scoring
margin bigger in the last five minutes.
The overall verdict of the game was
that Nant were the best team on the day and played the better open rugby
in very poor conditions. However post match, in the dressing room the
Bay boys received a visit from the Nant coaches who commended them for
their fighting spirit, never letting their heads drop, and stating the
final score did not reflect the effort and commitment by the Bay team.
The team look forward to Nant visiting Brookfield Drive in the First
Hydro Co Sponsored Rugby tournament on the Sunday 29th March
2009 at Brookfield Drive playing against the Bay, Caernarfon,
Llandudno, Bro Ffestiniog and Wicklow from the Republic of Ireland who
are this year’s Internationally invited guests.

Stockport 45 : Colwyn Bay 14
The Bay Under 12s team travelled to
Stockport to play two games one against their Under 11s level but
playing to the English Rugby Union Laws for junior rugby and one at
Under 12s. Playing contested scrums for the first time, contained to a
half size pitch with 12 men on the team, and kicking from anywhere on
the park and no defensive hand offs being allowed caused Bay great
difficulties from the outset. The team normally plays normal 15 a side
game played on a full pitch where the wide open spaces of the wings are
utilised fully but this did not happen with play concentrated in the
centre of the pitch and dominated by forward play. In this game many of
the new players who have joined this year including Nathaniel Smart,
James Jooste, James Mulvaney, Joshua Roberts, Kieran Williams, Tom Jones
had a full match to show their talents, and had the game been a 15 a
side match the game would have been much closer. With poor Bay tackling
in the first half Stockport were 35 points up just before half time the
Bay had to claw their way back into the game and Harri Chinery Parks
playing at Centre went over for a try to make it 35:7 at the break. In
the second half the Bay forwards started to fire and Lewis Shaw
dominated the line out and was ever present in the loose the Bay started
to make a game of it. Better tackling in the backs contained Stockport
to two tries however the last word went to Harri Chinery Parkes who went
over for a try in the final minutes.
The Bay look forward to hosting
Stockport RFC at Colwyn Bay at this age group playing 15 a side where
our normal free flowing style can be expressed in the 15 a side game.
Man of the Match Lewis Shaw for taking the game to the Stockport
forwards and with outstanding effort points award for Harri Chinery
Parkes Centre for attacking play and Tom Jones Hooker and Joshua Roberts
Wing for defensive tackling.
Stockport 28 Colwyn Bay 7
The second game at Under 12 age
group saw a further man been being added to the team in that there was
now 13 players on the pitch with the same English rules as the previous
Under 11s team game above. This meant that the Bay were playing once
more a congested style of rugby where the game was a battle of the
forwards rather than free flowing running rugby in open spaces which is
this team trademark style. Stockport again got off to a flying start and
were 14 :0 up after ten minutes and dominated up front however with the
Bay getting used to the pitch congestion, contested pushing scrums and a
kicking game on a small pitch this was always going to be a closer game.
Aggressive forward play by Jordan Edwards, Jacob Trotter, Kieran
Williams and Remy Sheil contained the Stockport forwards and better
quality ball was delivered to the scrum half Scott Kane who tried to
free up the backs of Connah Harding, Jake Wilson, Oscar Astbury, Tom
Jones, Harri Chinery Parkes and Luke Rawickii making his comeback from
three months injury. In the second half the Bay performed better and a
try by Jacob Trotter put the Bay back into the match at 14:7 however
future prolonged periods of pressure by the Bay backs did not yield
further points. Stockport scored a two tries in the last couple of
minutes to give the score line a better lustre about it but this was a
very hard fought game where the Bay boys can hold their heads up high
playing under different laws away from home is never easy.
Man of the Match was Jacob Trotter
for scrapping for possession up front and outstanding effort points
award goes to Jake Wilson Centre for great attack and defensive play and
Scott Kane Scrum Half for releasing the backs from limited possession.
All players plus one parent to
attend the Scotland Tour Meeting at 18:30 on Tuesday 24th
February 2009.

Colwyn Bay U12's 47 Bro
Ffestiniog U12's 0
Bay welcomed Bro to Brookfield Road for
the first time at this age group and came out convincing winners,
despite not playing to the standard they had showed against Llandudno a
fortnight before. Bro started well, tackling Bay well, and it took a
good ten minutes before the home side started to get into their stride
at all. Andrew Teese opened the scoring with a switch round the back of
the scrum and into the opposite corner, using his speed to run round the
defence. Good recycling soon after from Jordan Edwards and Jacob Trotter
gained vital yards close to the Bro line, before Jack Morris picked up
and dived over for his first try, which Connah Harding converted. Bay's
passing through the backs opened up the Bro defence, although on a
number of occasions poor handling let them down. Centre Jake Wilson, was
the next to score with a swift run across the park, as Bro were unable
to get across to cover, having been sucked into the forward battle that
was fairly evenly matched at that stage. Just on the stroke of half
time, Bay got another chance to break down the left wing and Tom Jones
managed to squeeze in at the corner, where he had been twarted by good
Bro tackling moments before, to make the score 22-0 at half time. In the
first few minutes of the second half, Bro showed some good commitment to
the tackle and also had a couple of good drives forward, but as the half
wore on Bay took command again winning the forward battle with some good
powerful runs from David Edwards and Kieran Williams with support from
James Mulvaney and Nathaniel Smart. A darting run from George Roberts
got Bay to within 5 metres of the Bro try line and out of the melee
Jacob Trotter flung himself over the line toget the scoring going again.
Bay immediatley returned the kick off with a fine run from Remy Shiel.
Again Bay drove over quickly and this allowed Kurt Taylor-Williams to
pick up and force his way. With Bro now tiring, having defended for most
of the game, Bay tried to keep their shape to give themselves as much
width as possible, and this allowed for three late tries to be scored
all from close range from Jack Morris, Tom Jones and man of the match
Scott Kane. Good support play from Gareth Mansfield, Adam Smith and Luke
Rawicki, just returning from injury.

Llandudno U12's 12 Colwyn Bay
U12's 27
On a bitterly cold day, Bay U12's put in
one of the best team performances this year in beating local rivals
Llandudno in a convincing and dominating performance. Keeping hands warm
was the order of the day and Bay did that and showed great handling
and despite missing a few early tackles made very few errors in
difficult conditions . After early exchanges in the middle of the park
where both sets of forwards were trying to out muscle each other it was
Bay who struck the early advantage with some good pick up and driving
from Nicholas Ingham, Kieran Williams, Callum Teesdale and Lewis Shaw. A
fantastic and powerful 25 yard run by David Edwards broke the Llandudno
defence and an offload to Jacob Trotter allowed him to score for Bay.
Shortly afterwards, Remy Shiel in characteristic style, forced his way
down the wing to add another try to put Bay into a 10-0 lead. Llandudno
fought back and a good move by their backs led to Mickey Murray scoring
in the corner to leave the score 10-5 at half time. In the second
period, the combined power of the forwards and some great running by the
group of powerful centres gave Bay some good possession and a telling,
cutting edge. It was one such move with the ball going quickly from
Scott Kane, through the backs, Connah Harding and Harri Chinery
that allowed Adam Stroud to score well in the corner. Jake Wilson
and Tom Jones shone with their tackling and great breaks from Andrew
Teese, playing at full back and Oscar Astbury on the wing kept Llandudno
on the back foot for a while, before they gained some momentum
themselves and Mickey Murray was again able to score for the home team,
which was converted by Lloyd Evans. Bay, were stung back into action
with Gareth Mansfield, Adam Smith and Jack Morris stepping up to the
plate and rucking hard and fighting for every ball. A great break from
Jacob Trotter from his own half was temporarily halted by good Llandudno
tackling, but Adam Stroud picked up and bullocked his way through a
number of challenges for his second try. In the last play of the game
there was another fine individual try by Remy Shiel, again forcing his
way through with great determination to score. This was converted by
Adam Stroud. This rounded off a fine team performance, where great
support play, unselfish running and passing and good discipline proved
that Bay were a match for any side when playing in that style. Man of
the match was David Edwards for showing that strength and some
impressive speed are a great combination for a prop forward. A fantastic
effort by all the boys.

Colwyn Bay Under 12s 53 Flint
Under 12s 5
The Bay used this match to ensure
that some of the new players who had only picked up rugby since joining
the secondary school got a good run out to show their newly acquired
skills and Joshua Roberts James Mulvaney, Kieran William George
Roberts and Nathan Smart did not disappoint. Flint although not the
strongest of team in North Wales put up a spirited fight against the Bay
Under 12s Captained by Lewis Shaw who ensured the Bay forwards
dominated the loose and tight play. The Bay got off to a flying start
when good forward play put in Winger Oscar Astbury for two tries quickly
and he then converted them both to give the Bay a 14 -0 start. This was
quickly followed by tries from Connah Harding playing at Centre and Remy
Sheil Scrum Half to ensure that the Bay were cruising at half time 28- 0
and converting all their tries.
The Bay then used the match to swap
players around out of position to experience the wider aspects of the
game. Jake Wilson playing at Fly Half set up long range tries for Adam
Stroud Full Back, and Winger Andrew Teece who ran the length of the
field to score under the posts and both tries attempted by drop kicking
from a long way out were unconverted. These tries were followed by two
quick tries Connah Harding who got a hat trick of tries on the day to
which his Dad Jay Harding Coach of the Under 10's needs to buy a jug of
beer on his behalf for the other coaches. The forwards were not to be
out done and Nicholas Ingham Second Row powered over from 10 metres out
taking three Flint players with him.
However Flint were not to be out
done and fought to the end and with Bay coming offside in front of the
posts Flint moved the ball wide to their Fly Half who scored in the
dying seconds of the game which was well deserved for the effort made by
the team.
Man of the Match was Jordan Edwards
Hooker who made the hard yards and linked wonderfully well with the back
row and backs to ensure the Bay possession was converted to points.
Outstanding effort was made by Kieran Williams Open Side Flanker and
Remy Sheil Scrum Half.
Training is on Tuesday is at
Llandrillo at 18.30 and the next game is away to a very experienced
Llandudno side in a local derby which will be an entirely different
match from today. It is likely that only 22 of the strongest players
will travel next week due to the experience and strength of the
Llandudno side.

Colwyn Bay U12's 41 Denbigh U12's 5
After a long enforced lay off due to Xmas and the poor weather, the players
were chomping at the bit to play rugby this weekend and Bay played very well
in what was a convincing scoreline against a fine Denbigh side who never
gave up trying and played some good rugby themselves.
The first half started with Kieran Williams making an initial long break and
was close to scoring before being well tackled by a Denbigh side who were
strong in the pack but possibly lacked a little speed out wide, and it was
this area that was exploited by Bay soon after with Connah Harding running
round the backs and going in for a try in the corner. This was followed soon
after by another break through by Oscar Astbury which left the defence
chasing his heels. This try was converted by Adam Stroud. Another break down
the other wing by Gareth Mansfield nearly resulted in another try for the
home side, but after he was tackled short of the line, Jordan
Edwards initially picked and drove but resolute defence prevented him on the
line, but they were then unable to stop Lewis Shaw's pick up and drive over
from short range which Oscar Astbury converted. Bays forwards became more
dominant with Callum Teesdale, Adam Smith, Nicholas Ingham, David Edwards
and Jack Morris all battling strongly and winning any loose ball, and it
was a turnover that led to Adam Stroud making a powerful run through several
tackles before offloading well to Remy Shiel who finished off the move well
under the posts, which after a conversion by Connah Harding led to a 26-0
half time score.
To their credit Denbigh started the second half playing better rugby and
deservedly drove over for a try from Osian Jones, but this seemed to help
Bay regain their concentration, as soon after, after a sliced clearance by
Denbigh, Bay had the foresight to take a quick throw in and Oscar Astbury
slid in for his second try. With Kurt Taylor-Williams, Will Murphy and
Nathaniel Smart all adding their strength to the forwards, Bay continued to
press forward, and the backs, including Tom Jones and George Roberts found
more space. As the half drew on, Bay pressure led to a line out on the
Denbigh 5 metre line. Lewis Shaw expertly caught the throw in and drove
through the defence for his second try. Denbigh struggled to get any good
possession themselves and found themselves stuck in their own half and it
was Connah Harding who broke through and slid into the corner for a try
right at the end to seal a good victory and some well needed exercise for
the boys.
Man of the match was Remy Sheil with outstanding performances from Callum
Teasdale and Lewis Shaw. |

Colwyn Bay U12's fell to their biggest loss for
a couple of seasons against a Mold side who were hungrier for this game in
the cold conditions at Brookfield Drive this weekend. Bay started slowly,
intimidated by some of the big Mold forwards and Bay paid dearly for early
missed tackles, with Mold running in 3 quick tries to make the home side
play from the back foot. Mold regularly won good ball at the rucks and mauls
and therefore Bay could not generate any decent passages of play for their
backs to try to make breaks. Good tackling in particular by Remy Shiel, Tom
Jones and Connah Harding helped to stabilise the team, but the forward drive
was no match for Mold's who again took control of the half and scored again
just before the break. The second half started much the same although as the
half wore on Bay gradually started to show a bit more of what they were
capable of with backs Harri Chinery, Jake Wilson and Adam Stroud making some
good breaks but even with the support of Jacob Trotter, Adam Smith, Jordan
Edwards and Lewis Shaw in the forwards they were unable to break the Mold
defensive line which held up well to the late onslaught. Good effort also
from Scott Kane, Matthew Patricolo, Andrew Teese, Gareth Mansfield, Nicholas
Ingham, Kurt Taylor Williams Jack Morris, James Mulvaney and Oscar Astbury.
All in all not one of the better days at the office which flattered the
score line. Better luck next week.
Man of the
Match was Tom Jones - Winger. |

Colwyn
Bay U12's 50 Rhyl U12's 5
On a very blustery day, which made
conditions difficult, Bay put in an impressive game of
running rugby to eventually overwhelm, what was a strong and
resilient Rhyl pack. In the first half Rhyl took the game
initially to Bay using their large forwards to keep
possession and drive Bay back, with only good and determined
defence by Bay forwards Adam Smith, Nathanial Smart, Kurt
Taylor-Williams and Jacob Trotter keeping them out. As the
half wore on though Bay started to move the ball and then
after a period of good recycling, James Mulvaney went over
powerfully for his first Bay try which Adam Stroud
converted. Shortly after a good move by Gareth Mansfield and
Jake Wilson down the left and a well timed pass to Adam
Stroud led to him running through the last defenders to
score. In the second period with the wind in their faces,
Rhyl started very well, keeping the ball tight and using
their strength to again cause Bay problems. This led to a
fine try for Alex Jones to bring the score to 12-5. After
that though, other than the odd flurry into the Bay half it
was all one way traffic, with Bay utilising the speed out
wide with Harri Chinery-Parkes, Josh Roberts, George Roberts
and Andrew Teese all making breaks. Remy Shiels strength got
him through several players to score under the posts,
quickly followed by a break and score for Connah Harding
which he also converted. Bay now dominated possession with
both Nicholas Ingham and Callum Teesdale running strongly in
particular. A great break from Oscar Astbury down the wing
led to his try after being released by Scott Kane and with
Rhyl now tiring, Bay turned the screw even further,
punishing the visitors with a strong run and spin off the
tackle by Jordan Edwards to go over, which was converted by
Oscar Astbury. Immediately from the restart Oscar then
scored again with a fine catch and jinking run through the
defence which was converted by winger Tom Jones. As the game
to its conclusion, Bay stepped up again with a long run from
halfway by Adam Stroud for his second score which Connah
Harding converted on the final whistle. Man
of the Match Adam Stroud for superb defence, attack and all round support play.

CBRFC Under 12s 47 Llangefni Under 12s 5
The Bay were in total control of this match and used the opportunity to
let new players to the game show their talents with fine performances by
Winger Joshua Roberts, and Andrew Teece Full Back and supporting play
from Prop Nathaniel Smart. From the early exchanges the Bay forwards
were rampant with Callum Teasdale, David Edwards, Louis Shaw
monopolising the possession which led Remy Sheil leading the way
scoring three tries before half time .The Bay backs were not to be
outdone and Scott Kane Scrum Half crossed the line with a sniping try as
did Winger Andrew Teece and Centre Harri Chinery Parkes who only started
playing this year, added a further two tries during the first half for
the Bay to go in to an early 30 point lead. However Llangefni who also
had a few new starters never gave up and their big forwards broke away
from a maul to score a good forwards try to make the score 30:5 at half
time.
In the second half the Bay backs were unleashed by quick service ball
from Scott Kane and further quick tries followed from Connah Harding at
Fly Half, Centres Adam Stroud and Harri Parkes again adding further
tries. Great wing play was executed by Gareth Mansfield, Joshua Roberts
and Oscar Astbury who had some outstanding runs although not scoring a
try slotted over conversions.
The match was a pre cursor for the Gwent Dragons Under 16 game against
North Wales Under 16s and the large crowd who by now had gathered on the
touch line gave rousing applause at the end of the match to both teams
showing that rugby in North Wales is very strong.
The Man of the Match was Scott Kane Bay Scrum Half for great support
play and delivering quick ball to the Bay backs.

Rydal Penrhos School Under 12s v CBRFC Under 12s 5
The Under 12s made the short journey up the hill to Walshaw Road for
their annual match playing Rydal Penrhos School one of North Wales
leading private school with a fine tradition of rugby playing history
and coached by one of Wales finest rugby coaches Mr Mike Leach who is an
ex Colwyn Bay player. CBRFC were missing key players as this was a
Saturday fixture and all the Rydal boys who play CBRFC played quite
rightly for their school. However the match was a very competitive and
tight game and the new boys to the Bay team made a great impression.
Rydal Penrhos got off to a good start with an early try from Morgan
Williams and dominated most of the early exchanges especially in the
forwards which showed their regular training and playing together all
over the North of England had bonded some great team spirit. However the
Bay hit back with some fantastic running by centres Harri Chinery
Parkes and Adam Stroud and this territory set up Remy Sheil number 8
used his strength to go over the line in the corner with three of the
opposition trying to stop him. Only some fine tackling by the Rydal
Penrhos half backs particularly Matty Humphries and Tom Ashby stopped
the Bay going in at half time in the lead. The Bay forwards were locked
in a great tussle for possession with Jordan Edwards, Will Murphy who
were playing for the school instead of the Bay dominating the rucks with
great assistance from James Barr (from Nant Conwy RFC ).However Bay were
equal in the loose with Tom Jones playing at hooker for the first time
putting in some great tackles as supported by Bay forwards Nicholas
Ingham, Callum Teasdale, David Edwards, and new boy Kieran Williams
covering the park in support of the ball.
In the second half some poor kicking of penalties by Bay let in Rydal
Penrhos for an early try by Tom Ashby and this was quickly followed by a
solo try by Matt Humphries and Rydal Penrhos led 15 points to 5 and the
Bay had their backs against the wall. Bay are renowned for playing a
style of running rugby and only in the last five minute were they
allowed to play their own game with Scott Kane at Scrum Half at last
getting the possession to release the backs. In spite of great pressure
on the Rydal line the Bat backs of Connah Harding, Oscar Astbury,
Andrew Teece, George Roberts, Tom Caldwell and Gareth Mansfield could
not get the ball over the line and Rydal Penrhos hung on for a great
victory which was followed by some great hospitality for the children
and parents in the Pavilion by the staff of Rydal Penrhos School.
Man of the Match Remy Sheil Number 8 for outstanding back row play.

Colwyn Bay U12's 24 Wrexham
U12's 5
A minutes silence for Remembrance Day was
perfectly observed by both teams at the beginning of this match which saw
Colwyn Bay continue their winning ways after a break of 2 weeks for
weather affected matches. Bay had not played Wrexham for several years
since tag rugby days and the visitors put up a huge battle for the large
Bay squad, who by the end of the match, knew they had been in a tough
game.
In the first 15 minutes, the game was
dominated by forward play, with the ball staying tight and only a few
yards being made at a time by either side. Bay had to do a lot of
defending in this period, due to the strength of the opposition pack,
but great tackling by David Edwards, Jordan Edwards, Lewis Shaw, Adam
Smith and Nicholas Ingham in the front five prevented Wrexham making too
much progress and great hassling around the fringes of the ruck and the
maul by Jacob Trotter and Callum Teesdale, led to Wrexham making a
number of handling errors. As the half wore on Bay got more into the
match and the backs started to make breaks through Harri Chinery, Luke
Rawicki and Tom Jones, with Connah Harding then being released by Scott
Kane to break through for the initial try which was converted by Oscar
Astbury for a 7-0 lead at half time. The second half initially mirrored
the start of the first with Bay having to tackle hard through
replacements Kieran Williams, Jamie Mulvaney, Nathaniel Smart and Will
Murphy, to prevent Wrexham scoring. Good organisation in the backs
though meant that as soon as the ball was released wide good ground was
made. Connah Harding made a great break on half way, avoiding several
tackles to run in under the posts for his and Bays second try, again
converted. As the half progressed Bay started to dominate possession in
the Wrexham half and good recycling of the loose ball led to Remy Shiel,
darting through to score under the posts, for Bay to lead 19-0. Wrexham,
to their credit, never let their heads drop and were rewarded by a break
down the nearside touchline for a score near the corner just afterwards,
to narrow the gap. Soon after Bay pressure was rewarded with a penalty
10 yards out which centre Adam Stroud ran powerfully through several
Wrexham players to score to complete the victory. Gareth Mansfield,
Andrew Teese, George Roberts and Joshua Roberts all played their part in
this tough encounter, which showed Bays' strength in depth and their
ability to play both a tight game in the forwards and then be more
expansive out wide with their fast running backs. Man of the match was
Connah Harding.

On Sunday the 19th October the CBRUFC Under 12s undertook a
sponsored cycle from Colwyn Bay to Abergele to raise money for their
tour to Scotland between 27th February 2009 and 1st March
2009 which will include attending the Scotland v Italy International
match. On a variety of bikes from the BMX stunt bike to, to a bike stuck
in top gear, to a full size downhill racing mountain bike, the team set
off and easily accomplished the outward journey to Abergele which
included with team sprint races on the approach road to Abergele. Whilst
many of the lads thought this quick outward journey was down to their
acquired fitness levels since September, the team Coaches and Dads new
it was more to do with a Beaufort force four tail wind.
After suitably taking on Olympic size carbohydrate portions of Chips,
bacon butties, sausages and drinks at the Café at Abergele the return
journey was more challenging and the wind was at Beaufort force five
which slowed even the fastest winger. To break the return journey on the
playing field at Llandulas the Under 12s had an impromptu game of touch
rugby, which was followed by “beat the hill” which is cycle race uphill
from a standing start, before undertaking the final stretch into the
teeth of the wind to Colwyn Bay pier. All the team made it and on
reaching the line new boy Nathaniel Smart received a round of applause
for not giving up on the home journey.
As per usual points will be added to the individuals scores which go
towards the player of the year awards at the end of the season for
undertaking this events. Please ensure that all monies are paid to Ian
Stroud Tour Manager as soon as possible and not later that 26th
October 2008.
The team coaches thank the following players for their fundraising
efforts Adam Stroud, Adam Smith, Callum Teasdale, David Edwards, Gareth
Mansfield, Jacob Trotter, Jack Morris, James Mulvaney, Jordan Edwards,
Kurt Taylor Williams, Lewis Shaw, Luke Rawicki ,Nathaniel Smart, Oscar
Astbury, Remy Sheil ,Scott Kane, and Tom Jones. Thanks are also extended
to the parents who undertook the cycle run to assist supervising the
events.

Flint 0 Colwyn Bay 72
The score does not reflect the work that the Bay team put in against a
determined Flint side who never gave up and the new Bay players also
made a strong showing. The Bay got off to a flying start when Scott Kane
Scrum Half released the ball quickly so that the Bay backs scored quick
tries from Connah Harding Fly Half, Oscar Astbury Wing, Adam Stroud
Centre, Harri Chinery Parks Centre, to lead 0:34 at half time. However
the forwards in the second half were not to be outdone and great forward
runs from David Edwards Prop, and Remy Sheil Back Row crossed the try
line to add to the scoring with the backs also contributing again. Great
forward support play from Callum Teasdale, Jack Morris, Matt Patricola
and with Lewis Shaw dominating the lineout meant that the score
increased rapidly, with the second half being shortened accordingly by
the referee. The match gave the new boys a real good long run out with
James Mulvaney developing strongly. Eleven tries were scored in a good
spirited match and Man of the Match was David Edwards.
Next Sunday sponsored cycle ride to raise funds for the team tour to
Scotland meet at the Colwyn Bay Pier at 10.30am.

Colwyn Bay 39 Bala 10 |
|
After a
fine start by Bala where they initially took the game to Bay, the home team
eventually got into top gear and turned it into a convincing win. Bala's initial
power up front was rewarded with the opening try, but Bay then started to
dominate the pack, having two drives over the try line first by Adam Smith and
then David Edwards held up by Bala defenders. It wasn't long before the home
team evened the score up when Remy Shiel stormed over, quickly followed by a try
by Oscar Astbury, pouncing on a poor kick out of defence by Bala. He converted
his own try. Bala scored again soon after with a fine individual run down the
wing to bring the score to 12-10 to Bay. Two other fine Bala defensive tackles
over the try line prevented further tries for Bay before the break and they took
a narrow two point margin into half time. The second half was completely
dominated by Bay, with Scott Kane's well timed pass releasing Adam Stroud for a
try early on. Great tackling by man of the match Matthew Patricolo, assisted by
Callum Teesdale, Lewis Shaw, Jordan Edwards and Jacob Trotter, prevented Bala
getting any decent possession and a fine turnover by Bay 10 metres out nearly
led to a try for Jack Morris, who was tackled inches out. Soon after, a big kick
out of defence by Bala was picked up by Tom Jones who promptly ran it back in
for a great score in the corner. Bays dominance now showed and Oscar Astbury was
able to score under the posts soon after which was converted by Adam
Stroud. Astbury went in soon after for his third after a break from Connah
Harding who managed to offload well in the tackle. In the final minutes
good passing by the backs allowed Adam Stroud to handoff an opponent to score
his second from 25 yards out for the final score of the day. Great support from
Gareth Mansfield, Andrew Teese, Harry Chinery in the backs rounded off a great
performance. Special mention also goes to Bay players Kurt Taylor-Williams,
Nathaniel Smart and Jamie Mulvaney who all volunteered to play for Bala to even
up the numbers and all had exceptional games against |

Llandudno 17 Colwyn Bay 36 |
|
A great win for Bay in what was a good quality game by
both teams. Llandudno took the game to Bay from the start winning loads
of possession but not being able to make the most of it, past some great
Bay tackling, Neither try line was threatened early on until a break and
a well timed pass from Tom Jones led to Connah Harding diving in in the
corner for Bay's opener. Llandudno came back well and only strong double
tackling by Jordan Edwards and David Edwards stopped an immediate
response. Bay were shifting the ball well to their backs and this paid
dividends when Oscar Astbury ran in from distance to score, which he
then converted. Shortly after, good harrying by Bay forwards, Jamie
Mulvaney and Jack Morris led to panic in the home defence and Oscar
Astbury pounced on a loose ball to score again which was also converted.
Again Llandudno did not let their heads drop and despite a great tackle
on his own try line by Tom Jones the ball was thrown wide and Luc Davies
scored for Llandudno to make the half time score 19-5 to Bay.
The second half started with good support play
between Bay players including Jake Wilson, before Jacob Trotter powered
over from close range to extend Bays lead. Never beaten though,
Llandudno persevered, and were only prevented a score themselves when
Remy Shiel put his body under the ball for Bay, although determined play
then saw Charlie Jones score for Llandudno, converted by Lloyd Evans.
The game then ebbed and flowed with Llandudno having the majority of
possession but Bay repelling their attacks well. Bay went further ahead
with an Oscar Astbury interception try, with Llandudno responding
immediately with a Luc Davies try in the corner. The final score came
with an interception on the half way line by Bays' Adam Stroud, running
in under the posts which man of the match Oscar Astbury converted. A
fine effort by the Bay forwards in competing so well with the bigger
Llandudno pack throughout the whole game.

Colwyn Bay 12 Newtown 12
This was Bays first home game this season in
front of a good sized crowd and was a very even contest with no advantage to
either side in early exchanges. As the half progressed Newtown
gradually started to win the loose ball and push Bay back, although stout
defending by Jacob Trotter, David Edwards and James Mulvaney in the forwards
and try saving tackles from Connah Harding and Tom Jones prevented any
scores until an attempted clearance kick from behind the try line
was charged down and pounced on first by Newtown leading to a 5-0 score line
at the break for the visitors. Early in the second half Bay found themselves
12-0 down after some good sidesteps and some missed tackles led to a score
under the posts. Bay then managed a great fight back with all the team
pushing forward. Repeated quick pick up and drives by Jordan Edwards and man
of the match Callum Teesdale soon saw Bay push over the line with a try from
Remy Shiel which was converted off the crossbar by Oscar Astbury. With Bay
now dominating it was only a matter of time before they scored again. Breaks
from Harri Chinery and Jake Wilson with forward support, allowed Remy Shiel
to pick up 5 metres out and go over the line, acrobatically scoring whilst
on his back, after good attempts at tackling by the Newtown defence. A
special mention for Lewis Shaw and Jack Morris who sportingly each played a
half for the opposition to make up the numbers for Newtown.

Nant Conwy 25 Colwyn Bay 5
Colwyn Bay U12's travelled to Nant Conwy for
their first outing this season in what was essentially a practice match for
both sides to get them used to playing on a full size pitch for the first
time and mastering the rule changes that had come into effect over the
summer. With the game divided into quarters to allow coaches to tactically
assist both sides, as ever both teams gave their all, with Nant Conwy
showing their attacking prowess whilst Bay showed their defensive mettle
under sustained pressure. Bay's team included newcomers James Mulvaney and
Nathaniel Smart who both played well. Good tackling from Tom Jones, Scott
Kane,Jake Wilson and Jacob Trotter helped keep the match close and forward
power from Jordan Edwards, Adam Smith and Matthew Patricolo kept the
pressure on Nant's pack, but good use of the wide pitch by the home team
allowed them to press home their advantage. Despite Bay going close with a
long run by Oscar Astbury, it looked as if Nant would hold out but Bay
scored a deserved late try after breaks down the wing by Adam Stroud and
Connah Harding were thwarted before Remy Shiel broke through to touch down.
Notable efforts also from Lewis Shaw, Gareth Mansfield, Andrew Teese,
Nicholas Ingham, David Edwards and Oscar Astbury. An encouraging start to
the season for both sides.
