Under 13/14's Match Reports

Sunday 15th April 2007

A hesitant start from the Bay when they let the ball bounce from the kick off and failed to gather it resulting in an early try by Llangefni and they quickly added another when a hospital pass was out wide was intercepted and ran in. But Colwyn Bay came back into the game when good pressure in the opposition 22 resulted in a penalty which was quickly taken and passed to man of the match Glyn Griffith who powered his way over to score, fly half Spencer Lumby added the conversion. The Bay continued to play well but ill discipline cost them a penalty which was turned into 5 points when the Llangefni prop went over to score. Colwyn Bay struggled in the line outs today and Llangefni capitalised on errors made scoring a further two tries but the Bay came back one again when scrum half Gaz Williams ran from almost the half way line to score and Spencer Lumby who had a very good all round game kicked the conversion.

Winger Matt Jones who worked hard throughout the game also scored a try and another successful kick from Spencer giving him 3 from 3 attempts on the day. This was a good performance from all of the lads especially from Sion Waddington Jones and Rob Jones and Debutant Josh Ward had a fine game. This was a close match played in good spirits and on the day Llangefni deserved to take the spoils winning 27-21

Sunday 25th March 2007

Colwyn Bay  5 Waterloo 31

Although arranged sometime ago Colwyn Bay arrived at this home fixture poorly prepared, with a large number of U14’s  & 13’s away on school trips. This was unfortunate as to do the fixture & the touring side justice the home team really needed to field it’s strongest possible side.

Waterloo had brought a substantial squad of players, all in high spirits & enjoying their tour, complete with silly hats & in some cases silly shorts & silly faces (only joking lads)

With the lack of numbers in the U14’s several U13’s were called on to enable the Bay to field a side & the younger players did well to help keep the tourists’ score down.

Key performances for the Bay were Aled Hughes in the forwards & Matt Jones, Liam Eynon & Daniel Parry in the backs. For most of the game Colwyn Bay were under the cosh & it was specifically these three who were most outstanding in defence whilst Harry Jones in the forwards made some good forward drives. In the end the Bay got a consolation try when Will Evans scooped up a loose ball in his own half & put in a good, if speculative, kick down the touchline which managed to stay in field & reach the Waterloo try line. The defender made a hash of dealing with it & good following up by Evans & Ryan Davies saw Davies scoring the try.

The Waterloo touchline singled out Matt Jones as the stand out player for the Bay.

Waterloo continued to enjoy their tour shenanigans after the game & we look forward to receiving the after match, joint, team photo to accompany this report.

Sunday 18th March 2007

Flint 0   Colwyn Bay 22

Colwyn Bay travelled to Flint in the knowledge that they were probably to face a bigger side that had already beaten them earlier on in the season. They also went in the knowledge that they had performed significantly better in the second half of all their previous matches this season. The main focus then for this game was to start well & not wait until half time &  this indeed is what they did. Getting into the game quickly & taking the game to the opposition rather than the other way around.

The Bay forwards took control with ball carriers making good ground & getting good support from team mates to provide ruck ball going forward & decent possession for the backs.

The weather conditions were against open rugby, with strong winds blowing across the Etsuary side pitches of Flint RFC. Undeterred the Colwyn Bay backs tried to move the ball as best they could. The Bay backline now becoming a properly functioning unit, with Josh distributing well  at 10, leaving Jordan Sheridan, Ethan Morris & Tom Hindley to exploit the spaces out wide.

The whole of the Bay team played well, especially in defending the Flint onslaught in the dying minutes as they desperately sought an elusive score. Owen Field distinguishing himself when clearing his try-line with a well timed kick out of hand to relieve the pressure.

The Bay try scorers were Ethan Morris , Josh & Harry Jones with 2 tries & a conversion. The man-of –the-match however was scrum half Arthur Astbury who, despite the onset of a chest infection battled hard throughout the game to win the ball back from the loose & provide a good service for his fellow backs.

Colwyn Bay u13 66 v 0 Newtown u13

Colwyn Bay overpowered  visitors Newtown by 66 points to nil in poor conditions with the forwards dominating throughout with good strong ball carrying and lineout work from Rob Jones and Harry Jones. Colwyn Bay Hooker Geraint Owen was man of the match for his outstanding work rate, pouncing on the loose ball, picking up the scraps and his clearing out in the ruck area. Other fine performances came from winger Dominic, Full back Jordan Sheridan a who put in some text book tackles and also stand off Josh Lloyd who showed good pace and elusive running and was a constant thorn in the side for the Newton defence with his dummy passes, scoring two tries and kicking six from eight conversion attempts.

other try scorers were Rob Jones 2 Harry Jones 2 and Mike Winters 2 Ethan Morris and Tom Hindley one each. Scrum half Arthur Asbury also kicked one conversion

Sunday 11th February 2007

Colwyn Bay u14  v   Pwllheli

with a few key players missing Colwyn Bay had a very uncertain start to this game, with to many handling  errors and miss tackles which they were made to pay for as Pwllheli scored a couple of tries early on. But the Bay battled on and started competing better in the rucks. Mid way through the second half Pwllheli were penalised just inside of there 22 and Colwyn Bay hooker and man of the match Rhodri Lloyd took a quick tap penalty and passed it out to wing Dan Parry who went over to score but Spencer Lumby who's kicking out of hand was very good was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt, and the game ended at
Pwllheli 19  Colwyn Bay 5

Sunday 11th February 2007

Colwyn Bay travelled to Rhyl for this encounter but it took nearly an hour of discussions upon arrival to see if this game could go ahead due to the eligibility of some Rhyl players, eventually the game went ahead but reduced to thirteen a side with both sides playing without flankers and due to the lack of players left for rhyl, their numbers had to be made up from Colwyn Bay players.

From the kick off the bay had Rhyl under pressure with some good forward momentum and the ball spread out wide to wing Matt Jones to go in under the posts for the first of his two tries and Will Evans converted with ease. Moments later Colwyn Bay hooker Rhodri Lloyd finds himself in space on the left wing and extends the leads for the Bay but Will Evans was unsuccessful with his conversion attempt. Liam Eynon having not seen much ball in recent games it was good to see him going on a fine run and score under the posts. Captain and MOM Gaz Williams rounded off the first half with a great interception try from the half way line. Anthony Dutton showed good handling skills and there was a lot of good individual displays but either side playing as a team, this was probably down to the mixing of so many players.Gaz Williams and Glyn Griffiths playing for the red and whites in the second half both scored tries and Chris Smith scored twice and Andy Howard scored late on in the game to level the scores at 33 points apiece excellent junior rugby and fair play in the end and good sportsmanship displayed by Colwyn Bay fly half Spencer Lumby who played the whole of this game for Rhyl and put in a fine performance.

well, done lads!!!

Sunday 4th February 2007

Colwyn Bay u13/14 v Bangor u13/14

Good early pressure from Bangor had Colwyn Bay on the back foot straight away and conceded an early try which was duly converted, with no real commitment in the ruck area the Bay were turned over far too frequent and found them selves 21-0 down at half time. This was clearly going to be a game of two halves as Colwyn Bay put a much better performance in the second half. Glyn Griffiths who had an outstanding game putting in the big hits and gaining hard yards every time started the come back for the Bay when he powered over in the corner for a well deserved try. Good handling skills from man of the match Ethan Morris set Ieuan Davies free on the left wing and with his pace no one could stop him scoring. Try no.3 came from a set piece and passed inside to Will Evans who went through the gap to score. Winger Matt Jones scored the forth try and Will Evans converted to clinch the match 22-21 in what was not a polished performance but definitely a determined one.

Sunday 21st January 2007

In appalling weather conditions, Colwyn Bay over powered their opponents and ran in twelve tries with a good solid performance from the forwards, in what was predominantly a forwards game and very little ball being played through the backs. the second half saw a bit more structure to their game from the bay putting more phases together and some good ball carrying and offloads from man of the match, number 8 Jamie Williams.
try scorers were: Matt Jones 3, Gareth Williams 3, Aled Hughes, Glyn Griffiths, Jamie Williams, Will Evans, Ieuan Davies and Harry Pemberton with Will Evans kicking 3 conversions and Spencer Lumby 1.
final score, Colwyn Bay 68, Llangefni 0

Sunday 10th Dec '06

Caernarfon U14  - 58pts

Colwyn Bay U14 – 8 pts

After having inflicted a heavy defeat on Bro. Ffestiniog last time out, in similarly atrocious conditions, it was Colwyn Bay who was to suffer on this occasion. In a generally well-competed game the majority of the scoring was done by one player.

Iolo Evans, the rangey U14 North Wales back, was, to say the least, dominant. Scoring all but one of Caernarfon’s tries, time & again he proved too strong for the would be tacklers, & ran in a number of long range tries.  In ruck & maul the Bay contained the home team & competed well in most areas but were able to score only once in the first half. A good pick-up & drive by No.8 Glyn Griffith from inside the opposition 22 set-up ruck ball from where second row Harry Pemberton took the ball on &, with a little help from his friends drove over to score under the posts. The score went unconverted.

At half time Colwyn Bay were already trailing heavily & had lost 3 players to injury. More replacements were made & the Bay continued to compete but the tide could not be turned. The Bay had to wait until the final seconds of the game for their other score when stand in Fly-Half Spencer Lumby put over an unlikely drop goal whilst off balance & under great pressure.

The Bay boys spirit never faulted & they did themselves proud. Their great camaraderie allowing them to enjoy a few laughs afterwards in the clubhouse.

Liam Eynon was tenacious in defence & won much of the loose ball on the ground putting his body on the line numerous times but he was pipped to man of the match by prop Aled Hughes who carried the ball well & tackled tirelessly to fill in the void left when the big hitting Glyn Griffith had to be replaced.

Sunday 19th Nov '06

Colwyn Bay u14's  v  Bro Ffestiniog

On a very wet and miserable morning Colwyn Bay travelled to Bro Ffestiniog and put on a fine display of rugby scoring 12 tries to Bro's one. The Bay were much stronger in the forwards wining quality ball for the backs who's handling was superb in such bad conditions final score for this encounter was Colwyn Bay 78 Bro Ffestiniog 7 with Harry Pemberton being named as Man of the match and try scores for the Bay were Matt Jones 3, Dan Parry 2, Ieuan Davies 2, Will Evans, Aled Hughes, Gareth Williams, Spencer Lumby and Jamie Williams, with Spencer Lumby and Will Evans  sharing the kicking duties.

Sunday 5th Nov '06

Colwyn Bay put in a fine performance in a tough game against a very good Mold side. Rob Jones put in some good strong tackles and there was good ball carrying from Will Broadway. Mold took a 15 nil lead at half time but the Bay hit back early in the second half through a Tom Hindley try and 5  minutes later Ethan Morris burst through under the posts for a well worked try. The Bay competed well in the rucks and they stole a lot of ball but gave away too much possession and Mold penalised them for this scoring another couple of tries. Man of the Match Tom Hindley replied with the second of his tries to reduce the arrears, Final score Colwyn Bay 15, Mold 25,

Sunday 29th Oct '06

Colwyn Bay started off well with good pressure and put Rhyl on the back foot for a while and nearly took an early lead when an infringement by Rhyl gave fly half Spencer Lumby an early opportunity to go for posts, but this went slightly to the left of the upright. After this chances were very few and far between as Rhyl settled down and started playing some good rugby, dominating in most areas and the floodgates opened for Rhyl and Colwyn Bay find themselves on the wrong end of a ten try thrashing. The Bay did come close to getting a consolation try when Spencer put a clever little grubber kick through for Gareth Williams to follow, but it cruelly hit the base of the post.  Ieuan Davies, Jay Williams and captain Gaz Williams put in fine performances again .Man of the match was Aled Hughes for his efforts putting in tackle after tackle. The final score was Colwyn Bay 0 Rhyl 60 and the try scorers were Jack Lloyd 3 Josh Rees Damon Price Tom Robertson Jack Hughes Tom Bishop Chris Smith and Gareth Jones and 10 points came from the boot of Ben Pament.

Sunday 22nd Oct '06

Colwyn Bay had a their work cut out on Sunday when they played at home against Wrexham who were a very well drilled and organised side. Wrexham had a lot of power in the forwards and hit the rucks and mauls with venom, the bay were guilty at times of just standing over the rucks, poor decision making, panic passing in tight situations instead of setting up a maul, securing the ball gaining composure and have time to weigh up the options. Nevertheless they put in big effort defensively, putting in tackle after tackle.
Captain Gaz Williams switched from his usual scrum half position to play open side flanker and put in a man of the match performance, Ieuan Davies, Dan Parry and Matt Jones were also outstanding. Wrexham turned good pressure into points and took a 12-0 lead at half time.
some good handling skills from the Colwyn Bay backs in the second half put Ieuan Davies over in the corner to reduce deficit, Will Evans missed the difficult touch line conversion attempt.
final score in this enjoyable encounter was  Colwyn Bay 5 Wrexham 17

Sunday 8th Oct '06

Under 13

Lost to Llangefni

Colwyn Bay under13s played their first match of the season away at Llangefni but were only able to field a 12 aside team into the full match. The game was a good and physical confrontation with both sides competing at the break down. Rob Jones (captain), Zak Taylor, Arthur Astbury, Mike Winter, Jordan Sheridan and Tom Hindley put in excellent performances especially with the ball in hand and some good tackling was evident through out the team, but Llangefni were a well drilled team and made the best of some good possession scoring 4 tries to Colwyn Bays 2, Tom Hindley scored for Colwyn Bay. Colwyn Bay player of the match was Jordan Sheridan.

Colwyn Bay over power Llangefni

Colwyn bay under 14s v Llangefni

Colwyn Bay crossed the Menai straits Sunday morning for this entertaining encounter, the game started off at a very good pace and a very well set up ruck saw the ball being spread out wide to Dan Parry and he was over in the corner, but the conversion attempt from Spencer Lumby just drifted wide of the upright. Moments later Matt Jones burst through from his 22 to score the first of his hatrick of tries, Spencer was successful with the kick this time, but then Colwyn Bay went through a very dark period were the tackling was a bit slack, they were slow in the break down with no one wanting to take responsibility, Llangefni won a good line out ball pumped it out wide and it was the start of the Cefni come back as two minutes later they broke through the Bays what seemed like tissue paper defence to score again and five minutes later Llangefni extended their lead with a try in the corner.

Early on in the second half the Bay got their composure back and started playing rugby again, keeping possession of the ball and soon Will Evans broke through to score under the posts and Spencer’s conversion levelled the scores at 19 all it continued to be a sort of ping pong affair with the bay scoring and Cefni replying, but Colwyn Bay resistance and sheer determination saw them come out on top with the final score being 33-31. Good solid performances from Captain and scrum half Gaz Williams, Glyn Griffith, Aled Hughes, Jamie Williams but top of the pile and Man of the Match this week was Ieuan Davies. Try scorers were Matt Jones (3), Will Evans and Dan Parry with Will Evans and Spencer Lumby sharing the kicking duties with 2 conversions each .

Sunday 1st Oct '06

Colwyn bay put in a good performance as they ran in 8 tries against Denbigh, it took Matt Jones just over a minute score the first of his two tries with Spencer Lumby adding the conversion, some excellent supporting play from Tom Johnson saw him take a short pass to go over for a well worked try. Tom Hindley showed a lot of pace out on the wing and went over for a try in the corner, fly half Spencer missed the touchline conversion attempt Daniel Parry showed he can be a utility back playing out side centre turning the Denbigh defence inside out with his jinking runs. The forwards were very dominant up front with fine performances from Glyn Griffith, Rob Jones and Harry Pemberton also Jamie Williams normally playing at no 8 but switched to the centres displayed good handling skills and also charged down a defensive kick, picked it up and went over for the score, but the man of the match award would have to go to prop forward Joe Roberts for his all round effort and hard

work, i.e catching the high ball and good strong ball carrying.                                                                                      Colwyn Bay made a lot of rolling substitutions to give everyone a game and the lads adapted well to the changes final score Colwyn Bay 46 Denbigh 0
