Colwyn Bay 17 – 0 Llangefni

The Bay started strongly and quickly, from the kick off, set up a good attacking position in the Llangefni 22. After a number of promising attacks the forwards set up a ruck down the left wing, which was quickly moved out into the backs for Curt Moore to score a well worked try, which was converted by Steve Thatcher.

The game then ebbed and flowed with a number of promising attacks from the Bay being stopped just short of the visitors try line. Then mid way through the half, Shaun Thomas was sin binned for retaliation. There followed Llangefni’s best period of the game, which forced the home side to defend a number of forward drives close to our try line. During this period the Bay conceded a number of penalties, which the visitors took at goal but failed to score.

The half ended 7-0, to the home side.

The first half had been marred by a number of squabbles amongst the forwards, which had led to a general warning to all players. So when early in the second, half the referee saw a player stamp another, he went straight for his pocket and as a result Steve Thatcher was ‘sent off’ in a case of mistaken identity. Earlier in the season this set back would have led to a total capitulation by the Bay lads. However, on this occasion losing their captain led to a strengthening of their resolve.

Tom Williams moved to outside half and kept the Bay on the attack through some good tactical kicking. Eventually from one of these kicks, the Llangefni winger knocked on, giving the home side a scrum deep in the 22. From the ensuing scrum, Tom Williams took on the defence himself to score close to the posts. Mike McDonagh converted the try.

With only minutes left the Bay were awarded a penalty on the 22, which was again converted by Mike McDonagh to end the game at 17-0.

This was an excellent result as the boys played for most of the game with only 14 players on the pitch. They showed excellent sprit and technique to match a good Llangefni side that had a very strong pack. It was most encouraging to register the first home win of the season and to complete the double over Llangefni.
