Colwyn Bay 10 –10  Newtown

Having narrowly lost to Newton away only two weeks previously the Bay side were looking for revenge in this fixture. To this end they started well forcing a knock on from the kick off, and establishing a good attacking opportunity. Despite a number of good drives and moves in mid-field Newtown, held out and looked comfortable defending. Then mid way through the half a poorly placed cross kick was gathered by the Newtown winger, who beat a number of despairing tackles to score an unconverted try.

This score gave Newtown a great deal of confidence and for much of the rest of the half the Bay side were forced to defend deep in their 22. However, with the half coming towards an end the Bay got themselves into a strong attacking position and were awarded a penalty deep into the Newtown 22. The decision was made to run the penalty and using a set move, worked on in training there followed a number of tight drives until the ball was moved out wide for Liam Hasnip to score an unconverted try. Despite further pressure from the Bay the half ended 5-5.

The second half saw the Bay even more determined to press on for victory and the blitz defence they were employing was putting Newtown under severe pressure. This eventually paid off with the Bay again being awarded a penalty in a similar situation to that of the first half. Showing some maturity the Bay again ran the penalty but this time varied the option and kept the ball tight amongst the forwards for Ritchie Davies to crash over from close quarters.

Then with some 13 minutes left the Bay were reduced to 14 men due to an injury to Gareth Jenkins. Despite a speedy re-organisation Newtown took advantage of this situation and soon got themselves into an attacking situation, and were themselves awarded a penalty. With another player injured the Bay were slow to react and seeing this Newton took the tap quickly and moved the ball out wide to score an unconverted try and bring the scores level.

Although a player down the Bay continued to look for the win and twice were awarded penalties, which they failed to convert. The match ending as a 10-10 draw.
